The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
#bfc530 Less hierarchy and more collective approaches in classrooms. Ts should start playing partners with learners rather than judges. Lot of impact does happen. Have seen it first hand.
We (not this group of course!)need to lose the belief that standardized testing & it’s results needs to drive educational practices. Still way too much of it out there. Inform, yes. Drive, no. #bfc530
Where ‘stand and deliver’ still exists, this needs to change. Student-driven, inquiry-based learning opportunities need to take on a greater focus. #bfc530
There was some rubbish in the paper today where the Minister of education was saying standardised tests were showing our standards have dropped... and he was quoting a test no-one is aware of students doing #bfc530
GM, #bfc530! We must question our assumptions—we must reject that what we have done is the only or best way. We must connect with our Ss & recognize that the lens of our own experiences can inhibit this if we don’t consciously, continually chose to question & reflect. #bfc530
Hopping in late and running out early! Of course viewing standardized testing as the best measure of student or teacher success needs to be unlearned immediately is my answer today! Have a great day, folks! #bfc530
We have to unlearn the concept that every learning opportunity means we have to erase everything and start over ... I don’t think it is about unlearning. I think it is more about evolving. #bfc530

I was just thinking about how much education had changed and yet so many structures are exactly like they were in the 1800’s. No wonder teachers are leaving the profession. #BFC530
Having just finished @jmattmiller 's DITCH THAT TEXTBOOK, I want to improve education by not settling for AVERAGE. How do we move beyond minimum expectations as leaders? teachers? students?

#bfc530 Connecting old knowledge to new has to happen. The tradition of "this is all new" without any context is perhaps the approach to stop in classrooms.
I would love if as a country we took a look at what skills need to be learned now. the world is vastly different than it was 20 years ago. What are we preparing them for? #bfc530
We need to unlearn that the academic classroom is the only way learning happens. It occurs on the playground, cafeteria, gym, etc. In and out of school, with and without teachers #bfc530
We need to unlearn practices that match our image of “school” (kids in rows of desks, speaking only to us and one at a time, and proving their worth on a pencil-and-paper test) and learn practices that lead to meaningful student learning. #bfc530
Unlearn that assessments don’t always need to be on paper. Sometimes the best way to see what a student knows is to let them choose how they show it. When students can explain a concept to others what better way to know they have reached mastery. #bfc530

Yes! We have all the tools to do that now. We can learn so much from each other! Just worked w Ts last night in power of GHO and web meeting tools. #bfc530
Stating kids can’t learn in rows is false ... and in some environments with some teachers that is the best way for those kids to learn at that moment. #bfc530
#bfc530 I have been associated with projects in Peru and Ghana. I know how so many schools are happy to have benches kids can sit on. So yes - where it works and learning happens - it is treasured. Education is such a wide spectrum worldwide.
Because it might not work for everyone- right? There’s nothing worse than people who stick to the “Ive always done it this way” mindset - try something new , think outside the box #bfc530
Things like-teachers should work countless hours before or after school so they can keep caught up. How about instead we create a system that supports the work being effectively completed during a teacher’s day. Burn out and over worked teachers don’t reach kids #BFC530
We should throw out that college is the only choice for Ss after high school. Private colleges is what is pushed on the kids. That should change. #bfc530
Agree! I was going to say that college as the end goal for every student needs to be unlearned. I have several family members & friends who learned a trade out of school who are both successful & happy (and never had student loan debt). #bfc530
That is wonderful. We have some programs like that in the states, but I feel like colleges are what makes the high schools look good and it is what they push. #bfc530
Yes! We teach kids who are bundles of energy & instead appreciating hearing their excitement or harnessing it in a positive way, we turn it off & make a classroom into a morgue. #bfc530
We need to unlearn the idea that everyone should be “ok” all the time. That we always have to be happy, or good. That pressure creates so much anxiety in people #bfc530
I worked at a vocational high school for years - loved it !! Hands on learning at its finest. Those kids were able to get great jobs right out of high school #bfc530

We need to unlearn the idea that failure after failure with no support somehow will motivate kids to “do better”. If the student feels like everyone has given up on them... #bfc530

#bfc530 Thank you! I know that political leaders like to test and create a discourse around education but there are some things that we strive to achieve in education that go well beyond a 1 hour test. Just a thought!
Yep! Failing forward is so important. But if you are not given a chance to learn from your mistakes and try again, then the failure is just a blow to your confidence. #bfc530
#bfc530 Doesn't happen though. Admins pile on infinite duties on teachers, refuse to be flexible on calendars, have meetings till kingdom come ...and then expect 'out of the box' teaching. No magic wands here. Only magic hands. Teacher hands.
We need to unlearn the value and importance of grades. Ss & Ts live and die too much by the almighty point. It’s counter productive to fostering true command and understanding in the classroom. #bfc530
This is an effect of the typical org chart. If schools are to be more collaborative, the power structures need to be oriented as such first. Typical system makes collaboration a hassle. #bfc530
Yes! And assuming that students aren’t doing the work because they are “lazy” and “unmotivated” instead of looking at the assignment and student to find the root cause for why they may not be completing the work. #bfc530
Getting a gift feels good, but research shows giving is even better. Grow happier & healthier & gain better relationships. Simple as that! https://t.co/lI2oHKmiic
