#miched Archive
The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

Welcome to tonight's chat "Hollywood vs. The Classroom." Please take a few minutes to introduce yourself. Q1 coming shortly.
Get ready to watch some great new and old clips and talk shop!
Mary Jo from Holland. PreK-5 librarian.
I'm Dave. I teach . And since I'm doing session at on teach math like MacGyver, I must be .
Hey MJ! Thanks for joining us tonight.
Man wish we had some MacGyver clips. Maybe next time.
Hey, hey, Ben here from St. Joseph, checking in for the chat!
Looks like will be a bit slow tonight, but we're going on with the show. Here comes Q1...
Q1: What might be important to communicate to recognize the work of teachers as superstars? https://t.co/jecru8e17P
A2: Maybe teachers need to have the mindset that we are superstars before we can make others believe as well.
A1: DO teachers need to be superstars/rockstars? I don't think so.
Like the point in believing in the work we do
A1: I like how this clip shows the differences in hollywood vs. true superstars
Maybe superstars is a bit much but believing that we are worth a certain level of respect isn’t wrong.
A1: If we did a better job of communicating the day to day of teaching successes, would we need to use the super star label?
Sorry can't participate tonight bit I'm representing with my T-shirt at a fundraiser!
Joining a little late A1 has me stumped. Teachers are not regarded as educated professionals much less superstars.
I want to talk problem solving PD for secondary teachers. Recommended resources?
Depends on your definition of superstar. When students love their teacher, they see them as a superstar
. and yet in many movies, and trade publications, we see "rock star" teachers labeled as such.
I agree that the term super star can do more harm than good if used improperly - teaching is not about ego
Everyone thinks they know what we do because they went to school. Anyone can teach…we must make it look easy I guess
. but yet all educators want some recognition for their work.
Teachers do not become teachers to be superstars! We're in it for the kids...not the fame or money!
I don’t know if it is recognition or more validation/respect. ???
I think being seen as a professional is key.
I often wonder what teachers would be like if it were about the money…like professional athletes maybe? Good or bad?
Recognition is healthy if it's viewed as feedback that someone is making a difference
. Absolutely. Do you think the media over sensationalizes that?
I think bad, personally. The best teachers I know are the most humble people who just want to make a difference.
More support from admin would help. Less focus on the standardized test and more focus on the word of the professional teacher.
A1 My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Proctor, was a superstar...seriously....I swear
Agreed, funny how Drs send school staff a script for IEP when we would never send a note for an MRI https://t.co/uwD7ULLxQo
I think being seen as a professional is key.
Hmmm do we have proof of this? :-)
I've seen this before. I giggle at it every time!
I saw her in action...leap over a building in single bound stuff
Hello Tara from Zeeland checking in late. 8th math Tch. Just getting home from the ball fields.
Q2: That being said...Is this clip in Dead Poet’s Society a realistic take on inspiration in the classroom? https://t.co/XTShJLvTPB
Sometimes I wish students and parents had to call me Professor vs Mr.
That does have a nice ring to it huh.
. say more about this. Is there power in the title, or significance lost without it?
A2: I often think my lessons/projects will go like this clip but then reality sets in and it doesn’t happen. Why?
A1: We need to celebrate all the small rockstar moves Tchs make daily. Need admin to share out all the good things.
One of my favorite colleagues in a former district used to call everyone Dr - created a great environment
That would be nice but I think we could all stand to toot our own horns at times too.
I think there is more "expert" with the title. How am I different then a college prof? They are expert in an area.
I know my college debut is that of a Dr. Yikes! I could go for that…Dr. Mastin.
A2 The art of teaching affords all sorts of ways to inspire and be inspired
Coz Could be many reasons, but mostly coz kids not always as enthusiastic as teachers... They get 5-10 periods per day.
Im an expert at instructing and guiding learning.
A2: I like how irreverent the clip is. Puts the focus on emotion and true learning. But ripping out textbook pages might not happen
true! Ts are excited because we created and are connected to the lesson. Ss get excited when they connect.
A2: Is the Dead Poet's Society "ripping scene" realistic? No, because we have no money to sacrifice resources :P
Inspiration is passion and passion is a result. Kids have to do things to learn passion. Listen to on passion!
That's it. Also the rest of the teachers in Dead Poets Society were terrible, not so much in real life...
yeah much harder to rip pages of an iBook. :-) Emotional connection is important for learning though I agree.
A2: one thing I love about that clip is how Robin Williams character cuts through all the bs and gets to the essence of learning
Hey there, . Jumping in late from my temporary digs in beautiful Jackson, Mi where I'm attending a training.
A2: More seriously, good teachers don't need to as dramatic as Dead Poet's Society, they can inspire through subtle modelling
today's teachers (I hope) are much more effective than that DPS teachers. Different era of teaching!
Imagining a dramatic swiping instead of ripping pages...it may need some work! https://t.co/UnSbbkFJS0
yeah much harder to rip pages of an iBook. :-) Emotional connection is important for learning though I agree.
I think dead poets was great BC students followed a teacher that believed his own ideals. March to his drum & honest to his kids
Yes, we need to share more and let others see the great things happening. And ask for help when it doesn't go so well
I think the“outside the box” approach by Williams is what a lot of us are doing now.He wouldn’t be as unique today
. YES! Good point! In movies there's a clear dichotomy of "good" and the "bad" teachers. Not so in real life
HS kids see through the BS.. They can se teachers wearing masks. Be true and work hard and fail with your students! Model truth
One of the reasons social media is so popular, people congregating around their own "good news"
A2: This is what I do like about the clip-a Tch stepping outside the box & doing what they believe is right. https://t.co/SneNb1ISQ7
A2: one thing I love about that clip is how Robin Williams character cuts through all the bs and gets to the essence of learning
Absolutely! Kids love selfies and stuff for positive recognition! Imagine teaching with a "Like" button!
A3: This clip really speaks to the need for relationships and authentic assessment in education. https://t.co/uF4uYJ5RYB
A3: I feel like that clip could have been shot in any classroom taking the M-step
Teaching with a like button? I love that idea! There must be a way to make that happen.
A3 Love that the clip celebrates speaking truth to power
A3: "that test really spoke to me and it helped us build a relationship," said no student ever
the app is a blogging app that allows you to “like” different posts.
A3: Relationships matter over most else in education. It's one of the things I miss most about not being in the classroom
A3 I loved this clip. "It's NOT about the kids." is the message I hear.
A3: Agree w/ that it's all about relationships. That is #1 in the classroom.
Yes relationships, sharing, communicating. Things we assume all kids can do, yet classes we don't offer.
A3: Watching this video reminded me of college more than anything. Change needs to be made at that level so it trickles down.
Hey ! Julie from GR jumping in late.
Hey Julie from GR! Great to have you
Q4: How does the pedagogy in Stand and Deliver stack up to reality? Inspiring or wildly inaccurate? https://t.co/hdHWAatbMk
School events around sports, prom, homecoming.. Does your school offer events around academics?
A4: Being sarcastic and condescending is a poor way to conduct your class. It might be "cute," but it's corrosive in the long run
A4: there is something about the pedagogy in this clip I don't like
We have events around graduation. We did our first gradation parade this year. Robotics had a sendoff celebrations.
I'm here late, too. Can I sit by you?
Amen to that. Kids often misinterpret it, it hurts others, and it tears down teacher soul.
I know has an annual tech festival. And still have learning fairs at the elementary level.
How much of that do you think he was doing to create a relationship with students? Sort of on their level?
A4: I agree with some of you that there is something about this clip that makes me cringe!
Agree that he was relating, and he was also setting high expectations
I feel like he gets better latter in the movie. I think he was trying to get them to see how they could do the math.
A3: Nothing mattered, student didn't care, teacher didn't care, and the test, nope! Positive relationships are a must for Ss buy in
A4: Using "shock value" teaching styles works GREAT in the movies, but is TERRIBLE in real life practice
yes please! I'm trying to catch up!
Used to have students# scholarship day and presented student work. Id love schools to do something similar.
I think he was trying to counter the low expectations that were always set before him.
possibly the way he almost belittles the students.
Rich from A2 late for Hit me with the current Question?
A4: Lots of sarcasm isn't healthy, but sometimes a little adds to rlships. Being able to "talk" w/ MS Ss needs sarcasm sometimes.
There's something about a movie, something about academic celebrations, and I don't know the rest.
tearing down students (in front of other students) never a good idea.
Q4: How does the pedagogy in Stand and Deliver stack up to reality? Inspiring or inaccurate? https://t.co/5rRJGmcPT5
A4: He relates to their culture and surroundings (good for building relationships) but he's sarcastic and puts Ss on the spot.
Class assigned projects/l to present.Invite community &stake holders w/students. Make it an academic ball & show off accomplishments
A4: As a math Tch, trying to explain neg & pos to Ss who don't get it is hard! I've found $ usually helps. Owing people $, making $
Good point. And there is no student inquiry, collaboration, or time to process
I just keep getting lost watching the movie clips!
agreed but teaching in a school like that seems like another world than mine. Can’t imagine.
Yes, movies need those "impactful" moments because they are only a helong teaching lasts for a year about relationships
Yes! I have to admit that I haven't seen whole movie. Perhaps I would have a different opinion if I was better informed!
Not whole group, I agree! Small bits, with certain kids sometimes is OK. Need to be very careful!
A4: It seems glamorous to "challenge" Ss comfort zones or to "challenge" their resistance but I've seen this backfire plenty
Q5: What does this Breakfast Club clip say about punishment in school? How can we change the conversation? https://t.co/aPjtLofNVt
Then you have not only lost that student, but any of their 'comrades' too. https://t.co/VRVix6bvVt
A4: It seems glamorous to "challenge" Ss comfort zones or to "challenge" their resistance but I've seen this backfire plenty
And challenging in the wrong context can cause long-term relationship damage
A4: Escalante's on screen story is inspiring but real Ts know there's no script when you're standing in front of a class.
A5: My district couldn’t afford a teacher for Saturday detention so that won’t up here. Ha! Wonder if that is what ended it?
A5 Watched it everyday as prep for my AP gig...kidding:) Thank Goodness for things like RP going on at
A5: I often wonder if the notion of detention and "in school suspension" actually helps students to reflect on their actions.
I find that it is often a punishment for Ss that shouldn’t be at home. Not sure reflection is happening though.
The research I've looked at says detention doesn't change behavior
stretching is a different story. Working with tough kids, keeping their 'rep' is ultra important. Destroy it = no rlship
A5: traditional punishment systems don't work, need to focus on the Why student act out. Yell and tell teaching needs to stop
A5: I think kids need to be taught how to honestly reflect, whether academic or behavior. Goal of consequences should = change.
A5: Can we respectfully ask Ss who they think they are...and accept the answer they are prepared to give? https://t.co/PMPehbTyr9
Q5: What does this Breakfast Club clip say about punishment in school? How can we change the conversation? https://t.co/aPjtLofNVt
A5: First few yrs of Tching we had detention. Behaviors didn't change. Now SRC (Ss responsibility center) & behaviors change.
I agree.I don’t use the traditional Stoplight that a lot of elemTs use. A lot of repeats. It doesn’t solve problems.
Ss learning to take responsibility is huge! What grade level?
Students hurt others because they don't realize how their actions actually hurt. Detention doesn't teach this lesson.
. fascinating! Tell us more, what does the SRC look like?
A5: Ss write plans in our SRC to get back into class but only for that hr. Can return to other classes. Tch then negotiates w/ Ss.
Anyone work in a school practicing Restorative Justice systems? https://t.co/sFfOyuScuG
A5: traditional punishment systems don't work, need to focus on the Why student act out. Yell and tell teaching needs to stop
I would like to know more about how your SRC is structured. How does it help change behaviors?
agreed detergent ion only teaches don't get caught
just got an email asking if I wanted to attend a training on this...need to know more!
grades 6-8. brought it to us 8+ yrs ago.
. great work being done by and staff with RP
oops detention only teaches students to no get caught next time
