Question #1 coming in a hot minute!
Remember to answer all questions in A1 formatting and to include the hashtag #rcstechchat on all responses tonight.
Q1 When you see the buzz words individualized learning or flipped classroom, what comes to mind? #rcstechchat
Remember to put A1 at the start of your response and
#rcstechchat at the end
A1 Individualized learning is curriculum tailored to meet the learning style and levels of a students.
A flipped classroom is moving the lecture part of a lesson to a pre-recorded format for your students to access at their own pace.
#rcstechchat
A1 Individualized Learning to me is one-on-one or something specific to certain students or a task specific to certain students. Flipped classroom is students' ownership extended to teaching it to themselves. #rcstechchat
A1 I believe individualized learning is catering your lessons to meet each student’s ability, interest and learning style. Individualized learning will also help keep students engaged in the lesson activity. Using a flipped method will help teachers individualize.
#rcstechchat
A1 - I think of instruction tailored towards the individual students in the classroom when I hear individualized learning. Flipped meaning anything outside the ordinary delivery of instruction. #rcstechchat
A2 First, I think the teacher will need to identify or define for themselves what mastery is for that lesson/skill. A great place to start is within your PLC. #rcstechchat
#rcstechchat A2 We have daily journals that they use to put end of class work in. This helps me see what they can do independently. It allows me to also see if they need any re-teaching
A2 I think measuring mastery allows the individualized time necessary for students to reach a pre- determined criteria, like scoring 80- 85% proficiency on 11 questions, or a creative piece which thoroughly displays a full knowledge of a topic.
#rcstechchat
A2 Once mastery has been identified, you can now put check points in place through your lesson to see if students are on the path of mastery. I also think students should know what mastery looks like for that lesson/skill. #rcstechchat
A2- I think you can answer this a lot of different ways. It can be a conversation, an observation you make in a small group, a formal assessment, how they apply the skill to other tasks, exit ticket...it's not just one set way! #rcstechchat
Great question!
A2 - Assessment verbally during the lesson looking for understanding (or non-understanding) and then testing. #rcstechchat I teach US Government and Contemporary Issues with allows for discussion, questioning and feedback. Conversational subjects.
A2 I think most teachers would say a grade of 70 or above, but I think rubrics are a better choice (although not always practical) because they break down what is needed, so students know exactly what is expected & teachers know what is mastered. #rcstechchat
A2 Through multiple forms of assessments and analyzing the data of how the students are assessed. Mastery levels, I believe vary based on subject. #RCSTechChat
A2. Skill mastery is evident in many ways. I look at student writing for mastery of concepts but there are many other ways they can show mastery. Some skills can mastery by verbal responses also.Really, mastery determination depends on the skill that is being taught. #RCSTechChat
A1 I see individualized learning as in tailoring our instruction to meet the needs of each child where they are using a variety of teaching methods and resources. #RCSTechChat
A3 - during the lesson I used index cards that one student shuffles and another cuts so as I go around the room I tell them I am not the one that chose them - but I sometimes 'cheat and call on someone not next in the deck. #rcstechchat
A2- mastery can me determined in many ways. Through formative assessments which could include check-ins, quizzes, performance based assessments, etc. the important part is clear expectations & data driven decisions to help achieve mastery. #RCSTechChat
#rcstechchat A2 I determine mastery on each individual student on their academic level. To me mastery is when they can do the skill without any help. All of my students are on different levels so testing is on their level.
A2 Mastery is determined through oral communication, exit tickets, benchmarks, etc. Take all of these and place them by standard on a chart and see if the student has mastered the standard. #RCSTechChat
I determine mastery by various methods of assessment in the music classroom...performance, composition, and the ability to re-teach are a few...#rcstechchat
A3 - I look for understanding by their responses and questions themselves. I try to encourage them asking questions and sharing what they do and do not understand. I base my test on the standards and look for patterns of where students seem to not understand. #rcstechchat
A3 Choice boards can allow all your students to “show what they know” in a variety of ways. It will also allow the teacher to tap into the different learning styles of their students. #rcstechchat
A2 I really, really know if students have mastered a skill if I see it TRANSFER to other areas, but all the usual things too - observations, assesment, date collection #rcstechchat
A3. Choice boards are somethings want to explore. However, since each student learns differently, the way they demonstrate learning can also vary. #RCSTechChat
A3 #rcstechchat choice boards allow the students to be able to have some say in their work and this allows them to take pride in what they are doing. It shows what they know and that would be what they can do without any extra instruction.
A3 Choice boards allows teachers to reach students based on their interests, achievement levels and learning styles. A teacher can tailor the selections by bloom’s taxonomy, the 4 C’s, or achievement levels.

A3 Teachers should use choice boards because it differentiates learning while still hitting the necessary learning targets. It can also promote self-regulation as a student has to maintain the time constraints that they commit to.
#rcstechchat
A2 We can measure understanding in many different ways such as exit tickets, verbal questioning, creative projects, writing prompts, and more. #RCSTechChat
Choice boards can give students a sense of ownership of their own learning. Engagement and motivation can also increase with student choice. #RCSTechChat
Choice is soooo important because students crave autonomy - especially students who come from poverty and have ZERO control over their lives #rcstechchat
Really enjoying this discussion! Great answers thus far. One more minute until @lmsrticarruth leads us into Question #4 where we will start to tie this all together #rcstechchat
A3 Choice is soooo important because students crave autonomy - especially students who come from poverty and have ZERO control over their lives #rcstechchat
A3 Choice boards can show student understanding while allowing them to choose how they will demonstrate that understanding. They can start out with a task that is on target for them and move on to more challenging tasks later. #RCSTechChat
A4 Screencastify allows you to record your screen. The video link can be posted to your webpage or to a QR code. My teachers are recording their PowerPoint lessons. It is really easy to work out problems using the pen with the laptop in tablet mode.
#rcstechchat
A4 You can level your choice board based on student interest and needs. BlendSpace will allow you to upload videos, PDFs, PowerPoints, plus many more…
#RCSTechChat
A4 #rcstechchat in my classroom various apps are used to check for mastery. These are very simple lower level apps because I teach CDC but I have found that even with my students technology tends to bring out learning

A4 #rcstechchat and skills that I may not have known that they had
My students also learn using technology when they are paired with higher functioning students. I have found that students many times can teach better understanding
A4 I will also recommend you create your own digital choice board inside of Teams. You can use hyperlinks to websites, Educational Programs, Playposits….
#RCSTechChat
@RHS_SID Playposit is a game changer! We have a teacher using it for her student take notes at heir own pace while embedding checks for understanding #rcstechchat
Videos can only be so long and can only do so many a month. I had to stop using it all together and I am all in on the powerpoint video now. It was a sad day when I realized that! #rcstechchat
I look forward to moving lessons to it over the summer for next year. #rcstechchat I see it as a great way to help a student who misses school for a medical or other reason to stay caught up or if gone on extended field trip to get caught up.
A4 Using tools such as NoRedInk, IXL, and IReady, we can create center activities to target the standards that our students need the most guidance with while challenging our students that need that extra push. #RcsTechChat
A5 One strategy is to 1) Pre-test. 2) Level off your board. 3) Students choose their entry point (each row) based upon how they scored on the pretest. This example was created by Mark Burns which also has extension activities. https://t.co/qPLGQDaNNE#rcstechchat
A5 #rcstechchat I think grouping is important. Students should be of mixed learning levels so that everyone can participate and higher leveled peers can help lower level peers. Assignments should be created so that everyone can have a part.
A5 Check out this @edutopia article which highlights Mesquite Elementary’s Reteach and Enrich program. The ideas can definitely be addressed by using a choice board during week 2. https://t.co/ASKJN3EGfW#rcstechchat

A5 #rcstechchat One strategy is to place level each student to check for what they know already. Then take that and use it to group your students evenly if it is a group project. You can also use it to pair students up that may need more help and can use a peer for that
A5 Last one- Video of a teacher explaining how he uses Marzano's scale to allow students to self-assess. The differentiated strategies suggested here could easily be expanded and incorporated into a choice board. https://t.co/5IWbfzrcXO#rcstechchat

A5 Writing teachers can create choice boards aligned with each type of writing such as informational and opinion. There can be multiple prompts that can be used for independent work, centers, small groups. #rcstechchat
A6 TIME!! Finding the time to organize the activities. But I have seen how tailoring lessons impact student learning so I know the time and effort are worth it! #rcstechchat
A6 #rcstechchat I can foresee some students maybe choosing something that may be too hard for them to complete independently and thus became frustrated. I don’t think it would happen often though
A6 - Great question! My first constraint is exposing myself to the potential of choice boards. Finding out what capabilities and opportunities it allows the students to have. #rcstechchat

A6 TIME!! Its will take at least a week to complete and making sure that students do not cheat with their friends. Technology not working. #RCSTechChat
ust a couple of reminders: Don't log off tonight without completing the form so you can get PD credit. Also, we will be off next week for Election Day! But we will be back the following Tuesday! #rcstechchat

A6 My biggest fear with implementing choice boards is the thought of students having low expectations for their own knowledge and not pushing themselves to their greatest potential. #RCSTechChat
A6 - I haven't used them as much as I'd like to...one constraint is the idea of limiting myself to not give too many options for the students and myself to handle the workload that follows #rcstechchat
