Howard middle school math science @Hopetechschool full inclusion campus. Diving deep into PBL. We have a workshop this month, led by a special education teacher. #UTedchat
Kristin, English teacher from @DavisSchools, checking in to #utedchat. No official resolutions, but hoping to get healthier and take time to read more books just for pleasure.
Brooke Anderson, Jordan assessment specialist. My resolution is bake my way through my whole pantry. Since some of the flours are unlabeled, it should be interesting. #utedchat
We will be following the Q1/A1 response method so we will know which question you are answering. Make sure to use #UTedchat in your response so we can all see it
Hi #utedchat Kiera Beddes, ELA teacher at @jordandistrict and New Years resolutions and I aren't on the best of terms, lol, I always find a way to NOT keep them.
A1I would define PBL as a self-directed learning project that has students attempt to solve a problem. As part of their project the students create a product to share with their peers. #utedchat
A1: Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge. #utedchat
Joining a bit late but happy to be here! MarciāI help educators change lives through the power of #literacy. Instead of New Yearās resolutions, I select #OneWord as my focus for the year. My #OneWord2019 is Become. #utedchat
A1. I would define project based learning as hands on learning/learning by doing. It is inquiry based and gives students real world scenarios. PBL also focuses on creativity, communication, and critical thinking. Students then publicly present their findings #utedchat
A1 #PBL is building your modeling, practice, and independent work around a central, authentic task. Students must work through a creative process, complete with self-management and self-evaluation. #utedchat
A1: One of my favorite approaches to PBL is #GeniusHour. Students pick passion projects that are driven by their interests and align with multiple standard across various content areas. #utedchat
I also like that it make the students the center of the activity instead of the teacher. Make them do the heavy lifting (figuratively speaking...probably) #utedchat#PBL
A2 Students must plan for their own learning and make decisions, instead of handing over decisions to the teacher and being handed back piecemeal, disconnected tasks. #utedchat
A2 I think the biggest advantage is that PBL puts learning in the studentsā hands. Any time we can have students take ownership over learning itās a huge win! #utedchat
#utedchat a2- I feel like students learn more and REMEMBER more from project based learning. I still remember āprojectsā I did in elementary school but I donāt remember any lessons or lectures from my teachers
A2: Students see the interconnected nature of their learning. Not learning in silos! More authentic to real life experiences where as adults they will collaborate, innovate, create and problem solveāand to do so they will engage multiple domains of knowledge. #utedchat
A2. I feel some benefits of project based learning include focusing on critical thinking, collaboration, being creative, and communicating with others. I feel it can push students to work a little harder because they have a purpose! #utedchat
What I like about this article is how it shows that with a little tweaking, teachers can do PBL fairly easily. We are used to having our students show what they know, but with slight changes, they can become so much more involved and takeover ownership of their learning #utedchat
This so reminds me of the book Power of Moments! A great read! We must provide students with those learning experiences that really stick with them! So that when they reflect on their school years, they talk about more than prom and Friday night football games. #utedchat
#utedchat a2- I feel like students learn more and REMEMBER more from project based learning. I still remember āprojectsā I did in elementary school but I donāt remember any lessons or lectures from my teachers
A2: Once they know what they are trying to achieve and then students have the freedom to engage with the material how and when they choose, they can really surprise you with how resourceful and interesting things they create. #utedchat 2/2
Q2: Joining #utedchat a few minutes late tonight - sorry! But glad to be here. Advantages of PBL definitely include more engaged students because they are actively learning (if it's done well). Definitely requires more prep work on the front end. Something I aspire to.
A2: There is often the benefit of cross-curricular learning that happens with #PBL. Students are automatically forced to apply learning from different contexts to complete the project. #utedchat
If itās good enough for Google... š So many incredible innovations by google came when employees were given 20% of their time to work on a passion project. #utedchat
A3: I have PBL ideas floating around to parallel our new #uted Geography core, but I also know this is an area we'd do well to crowdsource. Some great ideas flop. I'm thinking students might develop fictional countries to learn about government & economics. Minecraft? #utedchat
A3: One thing I really valued about the new Utah core for Social Studies was the expanded possibility for #PBL, especially with modern 20th century history. Students were asked to research a current issue and share solutions with stakeholders, etc #utedchat
We have to be a little careful generalizing Google to our classrooms. Teenagers can do amazing things, but they also often lack some e executive function skills we'd expect of Google employees. Structure and guidelines are still important, methinks, for teenagers. #utedchat
A3 I always felt like I had an advantage in PBL as an English teacher- we can read and write about anything, in any format. I remember making radio news briefs when studying Anne Frank -- WW2 style. Basically podcasts, but I didn't know that word at the time. #utedchat
A3 I'm loving passion projects this semester. Students select an area of interest, do research and learn as much as they can, and then create a product that demonstrates the learning. I have some tweaking to do for next time, but the framework is amazing. #utedchat
A3. A PBL idea is to have groups of students create a website about a subject, focusing on a product. They can then pitch their site/product to the class! #utedchat
A3: Advice for someone new to #PBL? Don't do it all at once. Start small with adding in more student voice & choice Work your way up to more & more student autonomy. The goal is for students to do they work, don't feel like you have to recreate the wheel. #utedchat
A3 An old name for this in ELA ed is workshop. Students would have time each work to work on their choice of writing and we tracked where they were, what they needed. #utedchat
A3.1 Iāve been thinking... why donāt we use technology to somehow communicate how long a train is going to take before clearing the road you are driving on? Now thatās a project Iād love working on! #utedchat
A great example of āshrinking the change.ā Too often we overwhelm ourselves or others by āaddingā instead of āintegratingā. Shrink the change by considering how to tweak rather than overhaul. #utedchat
What I like about this article is how it shows that with a little tweaking, teachers can do PBL fairly easily. We are used to having our students show what they know, but with slight changes, they can become so much more involved and takeover ownership of their learning #utedchat
Intro: Deborah, Social Studies teacher in Granite, and I don't believe in New Years Resolutions or staying up until midnight. I like sleep! As for resolutions, I make them whenever and as often as I feel the need to. Artificial start dates cause unnecessary delays. #utedchat
A4: I think you have to use a rubric for this, and there also need to be multiple check in points, especially for younger students, to get effective feedback along the way so they can adjust course. It's like writing an English paper: Outline, Draft, Peer Review, etc. #utedchat
A3 PBL projects are great tie-ins to reading groups / book clubs. We built up a library of small booksets (8-12 copies) and it provided great background for student projects. We centered booksets around topics covered in other classes, esp history. #utedchat
I love the emphasis on it can take on many forms. It doesn't have to look the same from T to T or from S to S. #PBL examples from other classes are just that, examples. Let the students figure out what might work best for audience, content, context, etc #utedchat
A4 Since PBL is so student centered, I think it would be cool to have a student directed assessment. In the real world it might look like total number of views from a YouTube video, but it the classroom it could be a star rating or something else. #utedchat
A4 Iād love a journal that documents their thought process, challenges, and success. Iād love to hear the personal narratives of the students throughout the process. #utedchat
A4: I think a very important part of assessing student learning is self assessment. Students have the opportunity to participate so powerfully in so many areas, they should be able to assess themselves too. #utedchat
A4 Rubrics are handy, but best when students can apply them to their own work. I usually had models of work and would have students evaluate them first thing- then we'd talk through what made quality work and what we should be looking for. #utedchat
A4. I think students could participate in reflections throughout the project. Can also meet with the students and ask them what they learned and how they felt about the learning process #utedchat
A4: If you focus on what the students think of their own learning with #PBL, then it allows the teachers to not have to think about the problem with assessing a wide variety of end-results. #utedchat
To ensure that the outcome, say ratios, is clearly tied to the action (cooking) I use direct instruction. I yell 'what is the ratio of teriyaki sauce?' and they yell '1:1'. 'What is a ratio?' they yell a relatcionship. #UTedchat
A4 End-of-project presentations of what students created/learned are great, but I think check-ins along the way are necessary. Maybe Flipgrid videos throughout the process so I can help students adjust course if they're heading in the wrong direction. #utedchat
A3: I would love to see an English teacher & History teacher collaborate to bring āThe Trial of Human Natureā to life at a Utah high school. This innovative project has an incredible legacy at Hillsdale High school and could be replicated elsewhere. (Power of Moments) #utedchat
A5 I think of the teacher as a guide and a resource. Students are capable of incredible things if we teach them how to spread their wings and then let them fly. We need to nudge them out of the nest and be there to help them up if they fall. #utedchat
A5 There's modeling and direct instruction, plus steering and counseling. Students won't innately know how to plan, evaluate, build, etc. Without boundaries, projects flounder. The teacher has to know what the aim of the project is, even students lose sight of it. #utedchat
A4: Thanks for all the articles, BTW! They are SO HELPFUL.Assessing student learning in #PBL means having authentic audiences. You can have the most creative assignment but if the teacher is the only one going to see the end result, it's not as authentic as it could be. #utedchat
I always meet with a Ss and discuss the project before hand. I guide and direct them to other viewpoints and watch. For some with learning challenges I model and they replicate. Inquiry model refers to this as the shallow end of the pool. #utedchat
I feel that teachers can build a classroom environment that promotes student independence by understanding the needs of the students and focusing on their strengths and passions. I also think its important for students to have a voice #utedchat
Gotta run #utedchat! Great topic and great conversation!! Thank you @MrJFawson!
Before I go, I would love to invite you to join me on my journey to become Multiplier! Letās read together and learn together via @Voxer! #utedchat
A6 Whatever students can do on their own, they do on their own. If students can look it up for themselves, they are expected to do so. "How do you know?", "How are you going to find out?", "What have you tried?" are common questions. #utedchat
Not always. 21st century skills demand collaboration and #PBL lends itself really nicely to authentic engagement and assessment of learning with others. #utedchat
A6: I start the yr training tools that I prefer: Scratch, Lego WeDo/Mindstorm, AI 2 app inventor, cospaces, sometimes (music) YouDJ & Soundation, kizoa (video). Then they go to these when they finish work early. #UTedchat
A6 I think we need to allow students to be independent. Sometimes Ts say they want students to think for themselves, but then we micromanage them. We need to be there to guide, but let students work through challenges. #utedchat
A6: We owe it to our students to provide them the information they need to succeed. This doesn't mean hand holding, but it does mean extensive revision and coaching until students develop the skills they need. A lot of this is also built into procedure and routine. #utedchat
A6: It's really important to stress to students that I am a learner as much as they are and to point out when I don't know something and the process I go through to find the answers. #utedchat
Thanks @MrJFawson for a great first chat of 2019! Next week join #utedchat as we discuss Virtual Reality and its Place in your Classroom with @joannamonson
