A1: Research is an essential component to understanding how other people have lived in the past. Coming up, students will be doing a lot of research for some self-guided learning as we design websites for a museum related to the Roaring Twenties! #sdedchat@_on11@burgessdave
A1: I teach STEM courses and in the Engineering Design Process you need to do research to understand your problem, consumer, and potential solution #sdedchat
#sdedchat A1-We do yearlong projects in my 8th grade U.S. History room, mostly through @NationalHistory. We also do six week long research essays that focus on the students interests. Currently talking about political arguments in the past and present.
A1: The process is very important in history. It gives a nice structure to the extroration of a question or problem. I would love to design a curriculum around a student chosen question/problem. #sdedchat

The first design challenge is for students to create a foot orthosis for a child who has cerebral palsy. They are so intense and draw from their own experience & really show empathy in their planning & prototype #sdedchat
A1 I don’t teach a true history class but in my Econ class I have my seniors research & analyze a wide variety of economic systems used throughout history & then they select/defend a system they feel was most influential to the modern era #sdedchat
#sdedchat The students definitely feel the pressure more since it is the same research process. This is when I really challenge the students to use the skills I taught them while doing the yearlong project.

A2: In my STEM courses students get anywhere from 30 minutes to a week for their research projects. Reflecting on this question.. I don't have any long term research happening #sdedchat
#sdedchat I have a year long project which goes from August to at least middle of March. Some students will take these project to mid-April, depends on how well they do in competition with @NationalHistory
#sdedchat This is my second year doing it, but my first year with all of my students, definitely learning the ropes. If you have any materials to share I would greatly appreciate them!
A2: Depends on the project, I typically give students a week to complete and chunk the project so they do a bit or research, then work on that part of the product, then a bit of research, so on and so forth, to help them see their product coming together like a LEGO set #sdedchat
#sdedchat A3- I have several weekly checks with students and their projects which maintains the momentum. I also try to relate the current content and skills we learn to their project. There are still some weeks where I have 30 students after school...
A3: One paper at a time. I take one block's projects/tests/etc. and put them on my desk and try to set a goal for finishing that block. Then once it is graded, I grab the next folder and continue. Accomplishing an entire block helps me put in perspective how far I am #sdedchat
A3: @hapara_team workspaces and Google classroom. I design a workspace that has resources, evidence, goals etc. it lets me scaffold and differentiate a project almost effortlessly. #sdedchat
A3: Serious answer- I use Google Classroom so I check in on student docs as they go & give feedback. They have rubric ahead of time. Score themselves at the end. #sdedchat
A4: All of them?! Any project where students are given criteria and constraints & then asked to invent something new and make a prototype. I love seeing their perspective & inventiveness #sdedchat
A4: I have my Government students begin the year researching and writing 3 position papers. They choosethe issues that interest them. We then use those issues to help us learn about the different aspects of gov.#sdedchat
A4: Ahhhhh so tough to choose. Between the Westward Expansion Twitter Chat, Turn of the Century Shark Tank, and now this Roaring Twenties website project, I have a lot of fun projects to work on! (Sorry for cheating and listing more than one) #sdedchat@MHSLewisHistory
#sdedchat Yearlong projects for @NationalHistory! Websites, museum style exhibits, performances, position papers, and documentaries. The kids get a lot out of them.
One of my favorite parts of English in HS was reading The Great Gatsby , researching the time period, creating a presentation and then having a themed 'party' #sdedchat
A4 My freshmen take part in a Personal Finance simulation each year (like the board game LIFE) where they seek to balance a budget for a simulated year with various variables to mange as well. They love it! #sdedchat
#sdedchat Best high school project was "sludge." Science students had to separate five components from a mixture and tell the teacher the exact weight and material we were dealing with. We had three days, were stressed out, and had a blast!
A5: Not very well. Want to try to do something for this upcoming project where my students review each others websites and provide real feedback. #sdedchat
#sdedchat Students peer editing using an online system I created using Google folders. Students get access to peer essays, get a rubric, are guided by me, and assess each other.
#sdedchat I have not found an english teacher to do this with me yet, but I think students could take writing from non-ELA classes and work on structure and format in their ELA class.
Hello Melissa from NY. Jumping in late. @mrpstrunk invited me. I don’t think I do a lot of peer editing, put I do a lot of peer check-ins. I like them to share ideas in science. #sdedchat
#sdedchat I have the students grade their peer reviewers and I monitor how many peer reviews were given by each student. It normally comes out pretty well
Depends on the tasks, but it is often something like. Identify 2 similarities your responses have in common. 2 differences. What could be added to make the response more clear?,try to keep it positive. Sometimes it is more content specific if it is for a lab. #sdedchat
It was before my time, but apparently it started getting out of hand with parents doing all the work. I work in an affluent district, and a lot of families work in the science/med/higher ed #sdedchat
In my district it would be difficult to award winners, so it would end up being everyone gets a ribbon, which I don’t think is any better. We don’t Awards at our school either. #sdedchat
In reply to
@MrPStrunk, @mrstbauerly, @forginghistory
#sdedchat I very much agree. I do think students benefit greatly when they get to see how others do their writing. I actively encourage students to steal ideas in format, style, and semantics from their peers.
A8: I don't do peer editing, but I do partner work and collaboration. I base expectations on our school Spartan PRIDE Expectations. I am present and walking around and checking in. #sdedchat
#sdedchat A8 Students have to grade their peer editors. Also, some students who have showed lack of effort have to show me their peer edit before they submit. They will stay after school and improve peer edits if the first one is not done well.
A8 I am a fan on fly on the wall approach, if necessary I like to refocus them back in by asking a question and then walking away to give them time to recover. The frequent offenders get frequent fly-bys #sdedchat
P- Preparedness
R- Respect
I- Integrity
D- Determination
E- Excellence
We have diff. expectations for hall, outdoor campus, bus, lunchroom, bathroom. My classroom expectations are based on PRIDE too #sdedchat
