Join #ICEilchat for the last Thursday of the month at 8pm CST as we discuss topics on ed tech, collaboration, building a PLN, professional learning and so much more!
My name is Kristen Mattson. I am a high school librarian in Aurora, Illinois. Embarrassingly enough, my students have me hooked on RIVERDALE! #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
Hi, all! I'm Andrea Trudeau, a "no-shh" librarian from Deerfield 109 and I'm currently binge watching The Handmaid's Tale and binge reading The Power of Moments. #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
Erin Wyatt, Librarian at Highland Middle School in Libertyville. Hesitate to admit it...but Celebrity Big Brother just started & since it has already been on 3 times this week, that's in the binge category. #AISLEdchat & #Iceilchat
I'm on the first season since I don't have Hulu and had to wait to get it on DVD from my public library. I have one episode left. Can't wait to start Season 2! SO grateful for my public library! #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
Hey there. Jenna Hnilo. ICE Marketing & Event Director. Currently in a grade school gym watching my kids basketball game. We’ll see how this goes. I’m going to practice failing forward tonight. Just finished binging The Bodyguard on Netflix. Thumbs up!🤣 #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
Love the "no-shhh" adjective! Good for you! When I did observations with educators I always wanted to see activity and hear noise...engagement means more than little soldiers! #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A1: I want my students to be digital citizens who can confidently navigate the digital world and harness the power of the internet to find accurate information and make meaningful connections with people around the world. #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A1: I want my Ss to be digital citizens who are discerning in what the consume, contributors in their digital communities, and are informed about their digital rights and responsibilities. #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A2: One reoccurring theme in our @ISTE Certification training we strive to instill ownership by ALL for #digcit. Ss should be immersed in #digcit in every class every day. It's a life skill and not a learn and move on skill. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat

A2: In my district, librarians - especially elementary librarians - provide direct instruction on digital citizenship, mainly because we have access to technology & we have a fixed schedule. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
Q2: When I was in the classroom it was my job. As the Computer Science teacher, #digcit was part of my curriculum. Other teachers modeled it in their classrooms too... I just don’t think that they even knew they were doing it. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
A2: We all take ownership! After all, it takes a village! I'm grateful to be in a flex scheduled library, so we can weave lessons into the curriculum when appropriate. No more canned, isolated lessons! #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
Q2: Ideally, all teachers in the building should be teaching and modeling digital cit lessons but still working to make that happen #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
@mrdyche and I are doing a lot of work to bring #digcit concepts into our high school government courses. Ss just did an awesome socrative seminar around "slacktivism" #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat

A2: You “own” a piece of the digital lesson when you are able to demonstrate a masterful use with the data or program. Those opportunities can happen at any time - it’s their choice. #AISLEdChat#Iceilchat
I would be curious to know if there is a "canned" curriculum that T's are supposed to deliver?? If so, do Ts feel comfortable enough with the content themselves to deliver it?
#AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A3: Skill development in empathy/understanding, communication skills, creativity, research skills, etiquette, literacy & possibly most importantly - skill of questioning the source of information and the legitimacy of where that information is coming from #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
A3: Students need to learn the consequences (positive and negative) of engaging in online communication with others. They also need to use the tools to be expert craftspeople with tech. I have 5th grade students edit my videos for staff. #AISLEdChat#Iceilchat
I just wish everyone could see the value in #digcit being integrated into everything we do in education all the time. We need to see it as a LIFE skill! #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A4: Wow, I feel like this could be a HUGE list. My initial thoughts: an open mind, empathy, respect, compassion, kindness, understanding, awareness of self and others, and communication skills. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
I think students need to know a lot about navigating cultural norms & differences as we become increasingly global. I try to support that skill set by exposing students to a variety of lifestyles, cultures, and perspectives #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
I completely agree. To me, #digcit is totally wrapped up in #SEL. To be a good person who contributes to society, you must be a good digital citizen! #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat

A3. Critical thinking skills to analyze sources, empathy and understanding to foster positive communication not hateful speech, ethics to give credit to others, creativity to inspire new ideas.

Wow, good question to ponder. I am thinking of social awareness, sensitivity, communication skills. How to speak and respond to others, create a positive interaction. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
Q3: Ss need to be confident in their ability to communicate and collaborate in a global digital community in order to be successful... and I think giving Ss the opportunity to practice those skills #IRL (esp. at the K-5 level) is key. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
It's important for us to model these behaviors in the classroom. It's also vital to provide opportunities (in-person or through #edtech) for Ss, so they can expand their thinking & learn from experience. Lastly, books can provide powerful insights! #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
A4: My vision would be for Ss to see both sides of digital ethics. Imagine a world where ethics becomes doing the right thing. Asking ourselves how we would want to be treated and then making decisions in which the better good of others is what we do. #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A4: We had an AWESOME discussion in a genetics class about DNA testing kits and whether or not we were willing to sacrifice so much privacy for the reward of new knowledge #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A4 As a librarian, I tend to focus on ethical use of others’ information and created works, respecting copyright including their own, citing sources #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
So important! Our government students will be looking at social media algorithms' influence on their political socialization later this semester #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A4: Understanding the line between the use or abuse of influence to push forward a particular perspective and the potential hurt this could cause is important to me. #AISLEdchat#Iceilchat
High school students also enjoy debating about whether colleges and/or employers *should* search social media, even though they *can* #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A4 - Privacy is my knee-jerk reaction. Ss do not realize how much of themselves they make available for data mining when they put themselves online. Thinking of the "10 year difference" share on social media, for example & enhancing AI facial recognition... #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
A4: I would hope students would understand the value of copyright and trademarks as well as cybersecurity and privacy. In middle school, we love to explore both sides of the issue through research and debates. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
A4: I like this idea a lot and I think it could work well as a discussion in an English class studying Fahrenheit 451 or other dystopian novels #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat

Our Ss were fascinated by the Common Sense Media lesson that showed how images can be manipulated and altered to influence purchasing behavior...how much of what they see in advertising is unreal, and is that ok? #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
One ethical issue is the extent we share about others. How much should our children be represented online? Maybe we can't attribute everything, but are we inadvertently helping to cause people to lose control over their intellectual property? #DigCit#AISLEdChat#ICEilchat A4
A5: Balance is a tough one for me as I understand how much it means and yet literally still have to make myself do it! I would help Ss by talking through ALL things they enjoy on & off line & help them develop a schedule that allows both. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
Such a great lesson! Awareness makes ALL of us better consumers. I personally think #medialit should be a required course in high schools. #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
First of all, welcome Jeremy! Thanks for joining us. Secondly, YES! Your ideas are awesome. Whenever I bring this up with parents, you can tell it gives them a lot of pause #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat

A5. I am the worst. Balance for me is that I don't interrupt convos with phones, I can eat without it, I have a purpose for my use. Students might need to create a WHY for their social media use. Like a social media misson statement. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
I think balance is hard for me too because so much of what we do is integrated into a screen - work, play, entertainment, socialization. I find it hard to "single-task" on any given day #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
Great thoughts! Can you expand on this a little? As one who shares work from students to highlight the positive, I want to make sure I am not inadvertently contributing to this. This is why I love convos like this. Thanks, Jeremy! #ICEilchat
A5: I think it would be helpful to show students how screen time effects the brain so they can understand the why and regulate themselves #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A5: The world is all around you and to experience some of it requires people to be present outside of the Internet. Take the equal amount of time spent on screen to engage in a walk, a real book, a wonderful conversation, a puzzle. Your brain will TY. #AISLEdChat#Iceilchat
Q5: As a busy mom of 2, I find that it's not just about screen time, it's about the QUALITY of that screen time. We have tech-free periods at home in order to engage face-to-face or get outside. I try to promote creation over consumption. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
A5 - I spend a great deal of time on social media - and have the iPhone screen usage stats to prove it. To me, "balance" means being as present and engaged in the *real* world as I am in the digital world. Modeling (Ts & parents) is important for K-5 Ss. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
Yes! This can also lead into some cool ethical conversations about whether app developers should utilize brain science to make their products 'addictive' or if that is against our morals as a society #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat

A7: I love using the book Two Truths and a Lie to teach evaluating sources with 5th grade! Looking forward to hearing other resources #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A7: If you've ever seen me present, you know I LOVE to use images to get kids (and adults!) talking. Here's a link with some fun ideas for you https://t.co/16ERc9hy3O#AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
A7: The newly revised Common Sense Media lessons are a good place to start on a topic, but the Ss let me know what they need by their questions and comments. #AISLEdchat#ICEilchat
I used these with parents about a week ago and they LOVED it too. The principal was so impressed with the level of engagement and participation #AISLEdChat#ICEilchat
