Hi everyone! Ed from Chicago, 7th grade world geography teacher.
Hello Pete & Ed! Always good to have some co-moderators!
Welcome to Jennifer from co-mod with and
Interested to see how this format works out tonight! Like how I don't know what particular topics we will land upon.
My name is Nick Rizzo and I am a pre-service teacher studying at Grove City College.
Hey y'all...uni environmental & cultural geography topics. Ready to chat East Asia tonight.
Hi Owen from CHINA! Yes that's right, East Asia! I work at the and teach IB Geography and 9th Grade Asian Studies
Me too! Hopefully it will go like it played out in my mind!
Hi Pete, Chris, and Jen! Hoping May is starting off well for everyone! Amazed by how quick this year has gone!
sorry for the few week absence, been a busy semester and my Wednesday mornings haven't been free!
Hey Beverly Jumping in for a few minutes from North Carolina.
As part of my program I include Japan, China, The Koreas & Taiwan as part of East Asia.

Looking forward to exploring East Asia from here in Austin. HS Social Studies
Glad you could join us tonight Nick! What grade level are you teaching this year?
Hi , this is Bill Chapman, a retired secondary social studies teacher, checking in from Berkeley, CA now that Ind. results in.
thanks Chris! Hope to be here more over the summer if the chat contiues during the break.
Welcome in - glad you're 'ing tonight!
Glad you could join us tonight! Can't wait to hear about life in China & what your school is like!
Hi Penny from Virginia. Doing my East Asia unit right now!! :)
2 be honest, by the time we get 2 eastAsia, the school yr is winding down+the region gets short-changed. How do I change that?
I am actually still studying in College but I would like to teach in the 4-8th grade range some day.
So tonight's chat is not a normal . No set questions, just an open discussion about East Asia. You pick a topic, country, etc.
and great to have you on tonight.
Hi Glad you all could make it!
We just talked about Kodo Drummers!!! Love that this is so now to my geography classroom!!
Lookin forward to learning more about the music from this region tonight!
Greg from Texas sitting in my class on you guessed it Asia. Popping in and out
do you feel like you start this unit too late in the school year to do it justice?
Nearly 2/3 of the human pop. of the planet lives in Asia. Is that an important fact to stress? If so, why? If not, why not?
Who wants to throw out a topic first?
follow and for some great geo ed ideas.
Timezones don't line up, but I have three classes of 9th grade that could do video msg exchanges when you lot study EAsia
Hi folks. Teach World Geo to college freshmen in WI. Just did a short unit on East Asia. I agree, it gets short changed.
great to have you with us Greg!
Right where I was going to go! https://t.co/uYHQ3yA2jU
Nearly 2/3 of the human pop. of the planet lives in Asia. Is that an important fact to stress? If so, why? If not, why not?
Very cool! Nothing like junior high! My 8th year teaching 7th grade and love it more now than when I 1st started!
This is the question! https://t.co/TPyiPUz4HP
do you feel like you start this unit too late in the school year to do it justice?
It's where it falls in the World Regions. I try to do all my units justice ;)
also, why do we address this region at the end of the yr with only 2-3wks
Me too! Gets skipped in pre-class music shooting for high energy. A Ss gave me some tracks this sem. https://t.co/V9qRMjwckX
Lookin forward to learning more about the music from this region tonight!
I don't think you can talk about East Asia without talking about its massive population. https://t.co/uYHQ3yA2jU
Nearly 2/3 of the human pop. of the planet lives in Asia. Is that an important fact to stress? If so, why? If not, why not?
We send video messages as well & got to connect with them face to face during our 24 hr Skypeathon. Was amazing!
do we get SS and science teachers to collaborate?
true- we could spend an entire year on Asia
it often comes after testing and so close to the end of yr that Ss are burnt out and tune out
My Ss are fascinated with how different E. Asian nation deal with population.
I agree!! I feel like I spend too much time on western hemi. Can't go Asia Justice in 2-3 weeks!
I think access to clean water fits in here somewhere
Definitely, especially as the climate warms and glaciers melt.
We're getting new frameworks next year..... maybe Asia will come first!! :)
In terms of population how do you get Ss to appreciate the size of over a billion people in China?
used to run a 1-child policy debate in class.
Resolved: 1-child policy has been a good thing for China.Yes/No
Luckily I get a few months to do ALL of Asia :)
also almost 2mnths on Africa
do the world as a village activity
This region is at the end too +state testing. We did geo issues project LY. Mostly in region. ex. https://t.co/NoiKpTTSzV
You have to talk about resources in relation to the large population of East Asia.
has just the activity for that.
7 continents and 9 school months. Not enough time, even in year courses.
I don't try to cover the world in one semester. So I'm thinking of groupings. This term - the West & the Orient.
yes!!! we do this for gender studies, too!
This ties in nicely w/ 's . Breadth or depth?
visually. every 7th person in the room stand up and move into a corner. Everyone else gets the rest of the room.
A1: Hard to do when you have eastern hemisphere gel and world history. What a teacher to do.
I do an exercise C/C pop of US, Aust, and China by using pieces of paper and students in prop to pop - Ss love it
Haven't heard of this one. Could you tell me more about it Penny?
and if you do it with all of Asia, its more like 3/7 of the class in the corner!
a regular Japanese hotel room felt like that for me! Lol. 😂
did a socratic seminar on this topic in Oct. Ss still talking about it.
Maybe next time "Old World and New"? Europe, Africa, North American and South America?
Indigenously, Taiwan culture > related to S. East Asia & Oceania. What does this remind you of? https://t.co/jNUdWLtcUs
Awesome! Just followed them. I will definitely check out their site! Thanks!
Cool! I had seen this in data chart form on Twitter. Didn't know about the video! Thanks Penny!
I'm not sure if we are counting Philippines as East Asia, but this is fascinating &surprising to most.
https://t.co/sH74gLvmed
What about the "Pacific Rim"? Start with North America, then East Asia, SE Asia, South America, and the Pacific Realm.
I have a picture book of it somewhere too. Excellent resource!
draw out land area for each country and have # of Ss stand in land area. 2x1 area and 30 Ss for China
I guess my question is "Where SHOULD it come in scope/sequence"?
Love it! Visualization can make all the difference for some Ss!
What resources did you use to bring in the new changes to the rule Jen?
We've had this chat in my district for years. No easy answer to sequencing.
Choices Program is high quality, great stuff for Geo education
Love these visuals for Ss. Plus it gets them up and moving which is always a good thing!
I never would have picked it out as Asian! Love it though!!!
I like starting with the Americas for footing/familiarity then maybe going over Pacific first rather than Atl.
you just have to follow your passion...
I totally forgot you shared this w/ me Chris! Did u get to use it this year? How did it go?
DBQ project has a 1 child policy debate in its world history set
I used 3 articles from one focused on changes and the predicted impact.
but so many Ss are familiar w/Europe. Makes it hard to start anywhere else
Joanne here a little late from Missouri.
Very cool! What were the highlights from this training?
Yes. I used it last year & it was great. Nice short documents that Ss could make sense of!
DBQ Project is great! We've used them as well great critical thinking Qs
Glad you're here Joanne! Jump in with anything you want to talk about for East Asia!
I agree, especially with 9th graders to get them to buy in to Geo Ed
I know Chris uses that one. Are there other good DBQs for this region to check out?
We did it as a read aloud. Kids were more surprised by call center culture than where it was.
1 thing I like about organizing by topic instead of region: use examples from everywhere, don't skimp on a region.
Like all Ts can use as much or little as they need. They are very modular units.
I'm a HUGE fan. Will have to find that one.
Remind me again - are you teaching in college? I love the idea of themes/topics instead of region!
All good questions https://t.co/LUT8DG3rLz
Where do your essential questions send you toward? Migration? Resource scarcity? Trade? Enviro degradation?
Awesome! Did Ss have any clever solutions to this issue Jen?
I have 7 guiding questions for all units
have to take into account grade level ability. is great
just rewrote standards to go from world regional to a more human geo approach. I'm excited about it
We just looked at the DMZ of Koreas. Funny what students bring to the class from moview
When I flew to HongKong last year, the map kept going to Chinese characters. I found it fascinating.
I could literally spend hours on that site.
I know it seems as if population is a major focus. What other issues do you guys address for this region?
economic power.... 4 tigers..... cultural comparisons
and South China Sea Issue
Are we shifting more to the Koreas now?
Resources, resources, resources. use of fossil fuels, damming rivers, amount of trash generated...
That's a fascinating topic to talk about. Especially when you look at it from the Chinese perspective.
. & I spend tons of time w/ North Koreas human rights violations Does anyone have any gr8 resources 4 the Koreas
The Uyghur of W. China. Largest minority in China. Bc of Turkic sounds & trads more Central Asia. https://t.co/RSuu2tIh03
I used to do a lot on the 3 Gorges Dam. Environmental blessing, or environmental curse?
Awesome! Thanks for sharing Kevin!
I focus more on ancient history but we tie it to economics, philosophy, government.
now this is awesome for science and
Hey - I know this isn't the biggest crowd, but I love the excitement here!
Best Dam lesson I give all year
I have stuff for air pollution yet havent come across materials 4 trash generated. Do you have a good resource?
Kathy - you need to join us more often!
I used the IB SL guides when I taught WG, great for thematic approach
my Ss love it, esp when the big one happened and they see all the aftershocks.... sadly fascinating
will be here all week! Don't forget to tip your waitress! ;)
these Qs help frame their curiosity and develop better Qs to study
hate to repeat myself, but
Hey - - how do you explain those wacky North Koreans to your Ss?
Shameless plug: speaking on East Asia for 3 sessions, one with
Bummed I won't be there! Plug away each & every week!
Oh yes!!!! We're doing loads of stuff in Tampa this summer! JOIN US!!
the site keeps getting better!!
Would love to be able to attend these sessions! I need to go to this conference in the future
AP Human Geo has so many env. science undertones
Awesome! I wasn't aware of this one! Need to use it next year as part of my 3 Gorges debate
I've used that the past 2 years! I show the 1st half, have to stop when they discuss that Kim's wife maydo porn.
That looks like a wonderful resource!
Is coming to Chicago any time soon?
What are you all teaching about Tohuku/ Fukushima these days? Still relevant?
(2/3) Mongolian Throat Singing. Ask Ss: What see/hear? What does this tell u about where they live? https://t.co/0iYLojRyfP
(1/3) I categorize Mongolia & Asiatic Russia musically as part of C. Asia. I love sharing this next one.
Awesome! Thanks Jen! My videos for N. Korea are getting dated!
How not to let China dominate in discussions of East Asia? Economically, environmentally, pop - China is so important.
there was just a NPR spot on Chernobyl and they drew comparisons with Fukushima
how about Tuvan throat singing!!!!
Sidenote: my nephew just informed me he never heard of Mongols until AP Geo in Sr. year, wants a whole class just on that
We can swing by Chicago on our way to Tampa!!!
That's amazing Joanne! Thanks for sharing it!
yes! do a lesson on 3 mile, Chernobyl and Fukuhshima and the impacts -- pol and environmental
Was just wondering about that comparison w/ the recent Chernobyl anniversary coverage
How do we balance Asia's past, with its future?
That sounds like an awesome inquiry lesson, could include debate on nuclear power! Love it!
These are such powerful images. Lets Ss get an idea of how powerful the storm and after effects were
yep, compare Fukushima and Chernobyl as hazardscapes / rebuilding options
or I can do an impromptu at O'Hare on my way to Cincinnati
(3/3) Ss love this mashup - Tuvan throat singing group Alash, perf w friend & collaborator Shodekeh. https://t.co/u4kk1HE3Di
'Reuters' Reporter Explores Life In Chernobyl 30 Years After Nuclear Disaster think this is it https://t.co/YUzNOIQVmt
Guess he hasn't watched The Mongols are always the exception! :)
follow he runs the show at NCGE
Zach!!!! Hey ters, this guy is the NCGE guru!!! https://t.co/9uSH561xIr
let us know where we should bring the NCGE conference in the future.
I still love "Onside North Korea"! Short, sweet, to the point. Ss speechless!
Already do. Hoping we can get to join a soon!
I'm not familiar with this one. Tell me more!
very relevant. Effects on Intl fishing, Plate tectonics, tsunami warnings/drills comp to Tornado/Fire Drills
No doubt! I think N. Korea is far and away the country my Ss are most interested in
How close to Cincinnati?? Join us for Korean food on Saturday June 4
Curses. I'll be at a wedding in Knoxville that weekend! Otherwise I'd be up for a road trip!
that's actually who my class is sponsored by! Great stuff!
what questions do they ask about North Korea?
Enjoy/benefit from my curation skills? Pls support me & Transport ur Ss around the globe. Only $99. https://t.co/utUjQM4YpM
Very cool! Thanks Joanne!
Winding down...
Next week - Political Geography
5/17 - Story Mapping or Regional Geo???
5/24 - Why Geography?
Yep, I'm out of town too that weekend, yet we definitely need to plan a meet up!
#1 Q -- Is it like in The Interview? -- no lie Sigh.....
Story Mapping. We can support our ELA teachers. More bang for the buck.
Thank you for letting us try this very lose format tonight. We might not have had as many Ts, but the crew we had was great!
Totally enjoyed tonight. Great conversations and deep discussions. Learned lots!
Thanks . Can't wait to go back through the thread for everything I missed.
FYI: approximately 15,300 births and 6,420 deaths just occurred in East Asia during our .
I agree! I think that's my vote!
WHEW and once again, the fastest hour of the week has ended!!
Geoawesome, as usual! Thank you.
VERY COOL!!!! https://t.co/i4I8iwedgg
FYI: approximately 15,300 births and 6,420 deaths just occurred in East Asia during our .
I clicked like, but obviously, I don't like 6,420 deaths.
