Hi! I'm Joy. I am a big fan of Shel Silverstein and Edgar Allen Poe.
Angela Rembert 7th grade ELA gifted poet - William Carlos Williams
Hey Joy! I have so many SS lines preloaded in my head!
Dang, I was trying to be on time and I'm still late! Sorry folks! Derek from checking in for some fun w/ .
I'm Sean from St. Augustine, 3rd, my fave poets are lyricists, heavy on wordplay ( and come to mind).
A1 make poetry in to rap and talk about lyrics tell a life's story
Hi, everyone! Kimberly, Media Specialist from Daytona Beach here!
Hi everyone, Cheryl from NC, 2nd grade!
A1: Teach . Use the poetry from popular culture to open discussion
My fav poet would have to be either or maybe Lord Byron? Too many to choose from really.
Howdy Nathan! I love the quote.
A1 Relevance is key. Connections make the poem tangible & meaningful. I like to pair with other lit.
A1 I like to start my students with simple & fun poems. I also like to show them that poems can also become songs.
A1: Introduce it with enthusiasm, something funny that they will hang on to. This makes them want to seek more poetry.
A1. Fav poets Walt Whitman & Jack Prelutsky. Use pics, tangibles, & even music to bring it to life.
Connect poems to movie or book characters.
I think making it into rap helps some kids but others HATE rap. Gotta have lots of choices.
whoopsie! On spring break and already lazy!
Not much, friend! Just got home! How's it going with you?
yes, they love anything connected to their favorite book characters!
A1 On using HipHop: Alexander Hamilton and Guns and Ships have activated so many of my kids (with minor edits for curse words)
My favorites are Charles Simic and Richard Hugo but to contemporary bards like for sure
It's such a gorgeous afternoon, I'm feeling great!
some kids aren't musically inclined so there are other choices
A1: I really like Bruce Lansky when using poems for fun in 2nd grade. His funny school poems are always favorites.
I agree whole-heartedly. I love ALL forms of music, but I'm strange like that!
Have them illustrate or sketch the poem.
how is that strange to have taste
Def need to make room for edits when dealing with poetry as rap, but still very valuable.
Some people only like 1 or 2 genres, but I legitimately enjoy ALL genres of music.
Yeah! Art+any subject matter = Win in my class.
I've done this, and Ss thought it was fun!
A2: Blackout Poetry for sure. Totally paper/pencil based, using words of others to express new ideas https://t.co/xGa35cPpSr
A2: Humorous poetry or poems with great descriptive phrases....
I've got a stack of old books to do it with, too!
A2. I love limericks and Haiku. They have been the most fun for me and my kids!
Bruce Lansky is amazing for poetry in the elementary school!
A2 I love it when I can have students listen to a poem either sung, or in a video format. They get really excited.
A1 hi all, I'm Jess, Artistic Dir. of a revolutionary arts ed co. Fav poets: P. Neruda, C. Bukowski, A. Rich & M. Angelou
A2 I had a group of Ss turn their notes into poems by altering words slightly to add the sparest rhythm. It turned out great.
This is so cool! I've always wanted to do this as well as book spine poetry.
I heard of this in a chat (might have been this one) & thought it would be great to use with poetry. https://t.co/x0JQCQJtbr
I heard of this in a chat (might have been this one) & thought it would be great to use with poetry. https://t.co/Z8xrLKHQNS
We watched "Casey at the Bat" yesterday for baseball & the kids LOVED it! Makes it real to them.
I have wanted to try that. Do you think 2nd grade could do blackout poetry?
OOOHHH! Another use for weeded library books!!!!! https://t.co/CLZ3HneZKm
I've got a stack of old books to do it with, too!
I agree! My own kids listen to everything as well since I *make* them do it!
I love that idea of illustrating a poem! Thanks Joy!
I do. make it a lesson on parts of speech. Identify the diff parts on the page, blackout the rest, read!
A2 I love immersing my GT Ss in lyrical poems that have a relatable message. Also Shakespeare is a must for us!
I really like the idea of Blackout Poetry but am unfamiliar with it. Do you have any resources on it?
We have studied Haiku already this year. I even wrote the instructions as a Haiku. I'll see if I can find it.
Q3 meanwhile, knows that students sometimes like things for different reasons than we do... https://t.co/oiy8dBADBK
I'm liking this idea...a LOT!!!
Every min of Hamilton is glorious, and a call to action to rethink our stale and silent curricula
Great idea! I've never had a class have difficulty w/parts of speech as this one! They would love that!
A.2 as a guest artist, I believe my role is to provoke & ? assumptions w/ form. We play w/ trad. & mod evolutions.
I have enough unconnected boys who are excited to YELL along with Guns and Ships. Words are power!
A2 cont. The goal is to release fear of "right/wrong" in their p.o.v. & let out the heart of the work.
A3 My Ss enjoyed writing their Halloween Haiku poems in October. We haven't done much else this year though.
chris coming in late--had to watch the Nova Nation celebrate on campus!
& are here! Better and betterer, it's getting!
A3 Finishing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and my Ss love the lyrical rants of the Oompa Loompas.
A3: Many love shape poetry. The image says one thing and the poem supports/contrasts. It's great. https://t.co/Jb6I4U5Uj2
A3: various forms of music and I would imagine free verse, found poetry is the preferred form of poetry to write.
A3 Students like the sound of their own voice: today rap resonates fro many of my students. Look at the appeal of HAMILTON!!
In the past I like to point out poetry DOESN'T have to rhyme & that sometimes blows their minds!
https://t.co/sTgeeFQu7k
A3: Hmm . . . in my experience 2nd graders like funny, rhyming poems. They also have fun with haiku, love writing haikus.
A1 We start by exploring some awesome poets, Shel Silverstein, Judith Viorst, etc.
A3 Once Ss get it, they love to write sonnets and odes!! Love to have them mimic "My Adidas" - do this every spring!
I use old math textbooks. Lots of deep poems can be made in there
A3 Fearful kids love a formula. There's confidence in directions. Divergent thinkers love unstructured stuff & found poetry.
In the past I like to point out poetry DOESN'T have to rhyme & that sometimes blows their minds! https://t.co/WBcZz9R5YZ
A2 I love free form poetry...I hate rules!
Because Run and Daryl Mac were amazing!
Well, he knows what to do in a trench, ingenuitive, and fluent in French....Hamilton.
Found the Halloween Haiku, but not as good as I remembered!
Halloween Haiku
Follow the poetry rules
Have fund & play nice
But i find that some teachers are too strict w/ a formula and end up killing creativity. https://t.co/lllBLi2hso
A3 Fearful kids love a formula. There's confidence in directions. Divergent thinkers love unstructured stuff & found poetry.
What is book spine poetry?
true. If you assign a poem and get 20 of the same thing back, it wasn't creative, it was a recipe.
Annnnd PAINFUL to read them all!
lining up titles on the shelf to make a shelf poem.
Yay, you made it! Did you see I already posted my for today?
Agree! Poetry is about emotion not rules; I feel it strangles children. Let them grow & them intro the rules.
We have written Scar Poems about a boo boo. Every child illustrates and places a bandaid on the hurt. Big hit!
We have written Scar Poems about a boo boo. Every child illustrates and places a bandaid on the hurt. Big hit!
That's just cool, but would not play nicely with my shelf/library OCD.
Yes, I also love doing shape poetry.
Every yr I go on a poetry tirade w/ some Ss over their assignment from their Ts. Free verse w/ rules???? HUH??
See, and I'm always so happy when I see people organizing their books by color.
I will have to look! Yay! I may be VERY late today...
Wait, you don't like rules? I never would have figured that about you! ;)
You're doing awesome with your lady! Have you watched the one I sent you yet?
A4 Show videos/pictures when available, and when they're not, we create the images!! Ss love freedom of expression!
A4: A picture is worth a 1000 words. The Ss can get inspired from the image. There are many powerful pics.
Hmmm...not sure what you mean...
You could do a Padlet with different illustrations or images matching the poem, curated by the class.
A5. Let them bring in pics of their favorite stuff. They love writing about themselves no matter the format!
Plus, I had one post at 11:40pm MST so don't worry about being late. You're EST so it's still WAY earlier than me.
hello friends joining in late! Great to see everyone
put books one on top of the other to try and make a poem out of their titles by reading their spines.
A4: Two ways, have Ss take a pic and inspire a poem from it, or have them write a poem and find a pic that captures its meaning
Not yet, but maybe tonight (will save me from looking for one).
A4 When I did my Halloween Haiku they had to write the poem & then illustrate it. Something that simple was great for my Ss.
had a crazy spring break trying to get back to routine
A4 With Bing Image Search's License look up, it's nice because Ss can find pictures to go with anything.
A4 use apps that make words into shapes
I also love to use music to inspire poetry
But sometimes it's nice to allow for Ss to have a recipe to start & then branch out when ready.
They could use an app like Pic Collage to write their poem on their pic. (I know, I know--tech!)
A picture/image itself can be the poem if it is titled as such.
my kids loved making wordles last year we did holocaust poems as butterflies
Q5 heard that some students feel overwhelmed when it's time to try their hand at being a poet. https://t.co/9VlxiBbSS4
I will agree, but let them create. don't be rigid w/ the rules.
My 7th graders loved illustrating their sonnets!! Seems pics are the finishing touch!
Of course not. Don't expect it to look *exactly* like the instructions but allow for mimicry too.
I like to read tons of samples that kids have written to help kids see they can do it!!
DId you submit your's to for a text set of Crossover?
A5: many times, poems mean the most to us when read alone. Simply pass them around to read. Allow Ss to comment anonymously
A5: expose them to the power, magic & beauty of poetry. Don't just do a unit or a month and let the books collect dust.
Q4: show a pic & have the Ss write a story using ONLY 150 words. Nothing more & nothing less. Their creativity will come out!
A5: Use poetry more in the classroom, model writing poetry, use songs in teaching.
I didn't. These are not mine, just quick finds for the chat. Mine are boxed up. Time to come out!
A5. For young Ss, do first as a shared writing. They can take turns holding the pen. They will begin to try & gain confidence.
A4. I made an anthology w my second graders selecting their fave poems and illustrating them. It was great!
I think the Ss need to feel comfortable expressing themselves before the rules can be set in motion.
A5 Have them free write words or thoughts... then find the order in the madness. Model first.
Ha! A high cafe swivel chair, dimmed lights, sunglasses, and microphone. Beret optional.
we always have paired texts and I try to have poems always with nonfiction and fiction to complement
Q4: I meant poem.
Side note: I hate making errors that I can't edit on Twitter! 😔
I agree. I think most of us focus on poetry in April.
Nope, guess I was too eager to wait!
Yes, it really give them courage as writers to use other kids' writing as samples/models!
But it makes you more human!
Uncomfortable writing poetry? My sense it only is uncomfortable when Ts sensor Ss hold narrow def of poetry
Maybe will put that in the weekly rotation for next week...
A5 Allow Ss not to share. Protect/respect privacy until ready or willing. Also, partner Ss strategically to build confidence.
A5 I think that providing a healthy amount of whimsy, absurdity, & novelty helps Ss to be open minded when trying new things.
I know, so do I! Puts it out there for the world to see, even if it does make us human :-).
Must throw out thanks to the fab person who mentioned Trap music during our music chat. I like it!
Love this! We write pg 100 stories. Turn 2page 100 of book u are reading, read the 1st sentence &begin writing.
Sadly, poetry was cut from a lot of our writing units across the grade levels.
I can't decide what to do!
Q6 wants to get the art supplies out for students to bring some visual splash to their poems. https://t.co/XCKXGdL4R0
A5 Remind them that there are no rules...
What??? Sneak in back in.
Yes! Poetry should part of our literary repertoire!! No special occasion necessary.
You have time! It can be anything...100 days of poetry?
A6: Have Ss write about a place then scan their poem or vid of reading it as a QR code, put code on map, post map online
It is good. I needed something new and it works at times. I forget who did that. wasn't it ?
I am no longer in the classroom, but many are sad or doing as you said.
Nothing like a healthy amount of whimsy & absurdity. https://t.co/7mymBl9efu
A5 I think that providing a healthy amount of whimsy, absurdity, & novelty helps Ss to be open minded when trying new things.
Don't forget that has the ability to look for images based on Licenses as well.
you can't take poetry out of a classroom. All Content areas can use it as a learning tool
Rap? Not me...Derek maybe? cc
A6. They could build something to go with it. Or, what about creating a scavenger hunt to discover the words of the poem?
It was a woman. I need to look at the 'likes'. Where's the archivist?
I've used rap before (highly edited) but others mentioned it here too.
That would scare me...writing scares me...to vulnerable. Maybe next 100 days...
You could do it Stacey. Ever since reminded me it doesn't have to be long I felt better.
A6 I give Ss options to make things that we can turn into movies or audio. I can be a little too casual with options, though.
Although I did put EVERY day on my calendar so I wouldn't get lost! I'm actually liking it.
heh heh. uh, sorry! I was just kidding.
It's like a mix of Blackout Poetry with illustration all mixed together! Super awesome! I need old books!
I should add, that book is all about insects!
A6 Poetry playlist...songs that inspire poetry. One of my Ss wrote a poem about the jazz we listened to in WW.
I used to tape and pin poems to my younger Ss so ppl would stop them in the hallways in order to read. https://t.co/iJERpl3VCK
Put it out there on Facebook, books will start to turn up, and annoy you.
A5 I always remind them they don't have to be when they start, but they just need to have fun!
Or have your mother-in-law clean out her shelves & bring you the unwanted books! Already done!
- likely wrote some terrible poems when he was young, that's how all of our favorites start out.
A6 Like to leave the options open with my highly creative bunch! I've had food, candles, paintings, robots, etc...open-ended!!
Nobody writes a good 1st draft! Everyone needs to start their "sloppy copy" and move on!
Ha ha ha... Discard books?
A7 Even though this chat is all about analog, it's cool to tweet out your writing, and poetry art!
Once again, I'm more than 10 mins behind in the chat. I must really be a problem child!
I know! That's why this chat is fun...we can joke & talk spiral nb (pros & cons) & still love e/o
Some nights, I'm at least 4 or five minutes behind, again,
A7. Blog, build a website just for their poetry, Tweet it, add it to Seesaw to share w/parents, & read on announcements.
Killing me not doing but these report card comments will not write themsleves. Probably gonna scan, respond and steal later!
A9: Poetry slams with other classes. This could be done thru Skpe, blogging.
have students share on Social media like instagram and class blog
A6 Have the Ss illustrate their poems by using Tear Art where they have to tear all the paper instead of cutting anything.
Is there such a thing...?
No. That topic is banned! :)
Was it ? When I can't think of something/one it drives me crazy!!
Wow, what did I miss? Sounds like a very controversial topic indeed!
I would not be me if I am not ALWAYS behind. In. Everything.
A7 Guerrilla Poetry: Have Ss drop poems in random public places, & take pictures to document. Share those online!
Me? What did I do? Innocent! lol
True! Someone always gobbles up the weeded books. (Me)
A6 Have the Ss draw/paint/chalk something & then write a poem to describe their artistic creation.
Go back to the 1st or 2nd chat. It's on my storify.
Yep! Any audience bigger than the classroom is a cool option.
Sweet! I'm on it like Blue Bonnet!
LOVE slams! used to have one at school & then winners would slam at a local coffee house! https://t.co/biAsIxuLnj
A9: Poetry slams with other classes. This could be done thru Skpe, blogging.
I know I tell you this each week, but I love you, -ters! You keep me thoughtful, reflective, & creative! https://t.co/67peIpDUIR
Hi , I see you scrollin'! I am in the throes of mock mock grading. My Ss blog for wider audience, not sure re. poems.
