#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Hey, hey #FLEdChat! Michelle, School Librarian from TN here guest moderating. If I weren’t a teacher, I would like to be an entomologist! Bugs are cool!
If I weren't a teacher, I would have been (I have no idea- my first major was physical therapy), working with children. I always knew I'd work with young children. #FLEdChat
A1. In order for our kids to be successful in whatever they choose to do, they will need to keep learning. It will help them as things around them change. #FLEdChat
A1 Lifelong learner is not a new fad but the mindset is so much more important now. With shifting economic landscapes, continuously evolving tech, and individuals who will change careers many times over being ever curious, resourceful, and adaptable is key. #FLEDchat
A2 "Learn to learn, side by side." Our work is relational. We make time for reflection by being with each child, looking at their work as a process rather than a product, and teaching reflection as a core habit. We also provide multiple pathwats for those reflections. #FLEDchat
A2 have students write tutorials about what they create to share with the outside world or have students create videos of important review items that classmates can watch #FLedChat
It is also a cultural shift. Work does not go home every day. We hold on to much of it and when we meet with Ps we can show the progress of work over time. Ss reflect often and that work is shared with families. #FLedchat
A3 Establishing the norm that Ss will share at some point helps with communication skills. Sometimes it might be written (journals or padlet) sometimes it might be presentation, or even a six lego challenge. Whatever the mode we focus on the content and the delivery. #FLEDchat
A3. Connect your students to others throughout the country or world. They can talk about what they are learning, books they are reading, or even work on projects together. #FLEdChat
A3. Create an environment where feedback is welcomed and valued. Building off of the previous question, the process of getting feedback and revising makes this possible. If Ss are giving each other feedback, it can build these skills #FLedchat
A4. A T at my district teaching in a HS ESE class was able to have her students write letters with students from WI, and then hold a video chat with them. Each S prepared ?s to ask. It was inspiring to witness! They had lots of ?s about snow! #FLedchat
A4b: You can start by connecting them with their own families and then their communities. May provide the safety they need to feel comfortable enough to do well. #FLedChat
The only way to develop communication skills is to actually through communicating ... how can expect kids to become effective communicators if we never give them a real opportunity to communicate. #FLedChat
A5. When goal setting, Ss need to establish a timeline with actionable steps to accomplishing their goals. Time has to be set aside for Ss to reflect along the way #FLedchat
A5: Define goals early on. Use imagery, make it a PBL Model goals both personal, professional and academic. I have an Academic Binder for each student that sets goals for each student academically AND socially/personally. When we conference...we discuss both (mine too!) #FLedChat
Breaking up into small steps is so important in accomplishing goals. Helps with accomplishing the goal become more of a reality, and helps with not feeling overwhelmed with completing it! #FLedchat
A5: here is a sample of a GOAL VIDEO model that Ss see then they create their own to explain it back in their own words. Sky’s the limit! https://t.co/GvCTl9cbX8#FLedChat
A5. I don’t do this in the library, per se, but we are beginning #geniushour projects, so this might be a good opportunity to talk to my kids about their goals for learning. #FLEdChat
Depends on the goal. I have a few that want to compete in some upcoming video game competitions. We've talked about what they need to be successful. It's not about me at all. #FLedChat
but then that is not really an academic goal ... that is a kid driven goal. #fledchat I have seen way to many kids have to sit through "goal setting" tied to some sort of academic achievement that I am bitter about the whole thing.
A6: EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. Teachers first. Students second. Ya must learn/know/grow/nurture their #EI and be cognizant of it to then EMBED #SEL& #EI into their classroom culture&lessons. However, Ed is jumping on it like its a course ...and missing the mark. It’s NOT! #FLedChat
Not if it's in a game design class and we can use their experiences to further their own understanding. :-)
Testing related goal setting is an entirely different matter. But I am in a different environment than I used to be. :-) #LuckyMe#FLedChat
