The #2PencilChat is a weekly conversation about educational technology. As we enter a more student-centered age, let's talk about using all the tools in our toolboxes to be innovative and dynamic teachers.
Hello, and welcome to the #2PencilChat!
Tonight we're constructing a list of tools that we want to check out over the Summah! Are you in? Say hey, and introduce yourself!
Hey, #2PencilChat! It's me, Sean, the St. Augustinian teacher, goofus, and your pal at Buncee. Let's get ready for Summah! (Again, my apologies for the hemispherical insensitivity, @JoPrestia and @GruntledChalkie!)
Good evening everyone! Priscilla here, from Maryland. I'm the one that teaches in the all male juvenile detention center. We teach Year Round :( #2PencilChat

A1: First I start by doing absolitely nothing, so I can see what that feels like...doesn't last long. Then I throw in some gym and some movies.. #2pencilchat
#2PencilChat Good Evening Everyone, I'm Kristina, I teach math in a public school in Maryland. I've been using dry erase boards and markers a lot lately. Also this is my first twitter chat so I'll try to keep up.
A1: This will be my first official summer so... lots of fishing and lots of yardwork. I love being on my tractor...though I will be repairing that as well! #2pencilchat
Q1: Mostly enjoying the extra Daddy time with my daughter. But scuba diving, hiking summits in NH's White Mountains, and more exercise also get their due. AND more time/energy spent on my writing. #2PencilChat

A1: I do not bring any work home with me and I focus on spending time with friends and family. If they aren't available then I try to focus on tasks and activities I enjoy while listening to music. #2pencilchat

Hi Katie, I guess you coach indoor sports, my building doesn't have any windows, so I feel your pain. Fortunately I coach field hockey so I get sunshine and rain most of the fall. #2pencilchat
@kmichellehowell Q2
Let's talk about information. What are your favorite tools to share information with students? What should we check out this Summah? #2PencilChat
A2 Given the data privacy issues in SO MANY apps & programs, I’m still a fan of using my Google site to distribute information to students. 🦕 #2pencilchat
A2 I am going to look into a couple things I have not had the time to get into during the year @nearpod and simulation sites are at the top of the list #2pencilchat
A2: @RemindHQ@FreshGrade#2pencilchat These two have come in very handy this year. I would use @voxer with my students but not all have access like that.
A2: I usually lose touch with my Ss and their families over the summer, but this year I have made such connection with them that I will continue to connect with them and communicate with them using the Edmodo platform. #2pencilchat
A2. I like using https://t.co/rNcuJaln3m It's free to teachers. Lessons are premade, entertaining and multilevel. Ss can complete independently or like do, in a whole group setting.#2PencilChat
A2 I always liked to put together youtube playlists that support what we're learning. It made things seem more relevant to my kids when I put a good list together. #2PencilChat
A2. I love @RemindHQ for reminders. @buncee could be used to send postcards back and forth about summer adventures. Encourage kids to blog about what they are doing, reading, etc. #2PencilChat
Hello everyone, sorry I am a bit late. A3) Flipgrid and several others I was just reading that the group has posted! Love new tech tools to share! #2pencilchat
A3: Our school system is transitioning to Schoology for our new learning management system so I would like to tinker with that this summer. At the PD workshop on it I was told we can create a class website #2PencilChat
Q3: I am going to stray from the conventional definition of "tool..." I am completely loving @ShakeUpLearning right now--- Kasey Bell's new book. It's making me rethink so many things on so many levels. I love all the new ideas and strategies! #2PencilChat Anyone else booking it?
A3: I definitely want to look at better ways of utilizing #Flipgrid in my class. I also need to explore #Booksnaps... long overdue. If I do land an assistant principal job I will explore ways to use current & new tools to benefit the whole school community. #2PencilChat
A3: I really want to get into using some tools that I tried this year but didn't get deep into including but not limited to flipgrid, buncee, OneNote, Seesaw. Plus I want to make more flip charts on ActivInspire and Classflow.#2pencilchat
Awesome! Me too! I am going to do a new project to get me going... #ScienceEVERYday. Hoping this will motivate me to post an image at least once a day-- to really show that science IS all around us everyday! ;) #2PencilChat
I like when Ss come into my classroom and ask: What are the legos for? Or What is the 3ft tall Kerplunk for? Using more hands on learning tools will be an adventure for the summer of learning as well! #2pencilchat
I am moving into the Fabrication Lab next year ... gotta learn how to run that SHopBot ... laser etcher/cutter ... 3D printers ... going to be a little creative #2pencilchat
A4 I'm old...school The best tool to have Ss use is their curiosity When Ss learn w/a wonder mindset their engagement & questioning is higher I like tools, but nothing beats the mind of a child #2pencilchat
Too, I have had to modify (either because of not being 1:1, restricted websites/firewalls, or Ss just not using them appropriately.) Hands on is always a good option! :) #2pencilchat
A4) I think we need to have students create the content and assessments in Nearpod, Minecraft, Flipgrid, etc...I still love ShowMe for a student-centered classroom. #2pencilchat
I like the idea of keeping up on students' favorite pop culture - when you can adapt things that they already know to use as a framework for them to share, cool things happen.
#2PencilChat
A4: The @Arcademics skill builder games are a go-to in my class, along with @ProdigyGame. Immensely fun for the kids while motivating them to practice those core math skills and concepts daily.
#2PencilChat
Sorry #2pencilchat can't join today but just dropped in to say hi & let you know that Wednesday is a great day - though cloudy and cold where I am. Enjoy!
A4: (Joining the party late!) I like having students write things they are unsure about on the board and having other students who DO understand answer the questions...good learning all around #2pencilchat
A4: one practice that I have used with my Ss this year was collaborating with other Ts on our campus @NBFelem. After learning the content in my classroom via discussions+ print and digital resources, my Ss taught first grader about topics like Earth Day. #2pencilchat
A4: My go to Math tools are @HMHCo and @DiscoveryEd. I really like our GoMath digital text through Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and I supplement with activities and practice from the @DiscoveryEd Math Techbook regularly #2pencilchat
A4. I need to get better at Breakouts. I think regular use would lessen the frustration for some of my kids. I want more choices for my kids to share their learning. #2PencilChat
Q5
What are your X-Factor tools, apps, and practices? Maybe they don't -seem- academic, but they make running your classroom so much better!
#2PencilChat
A5 One of my current student favs are Stik Bots! They created story boards, props, and backgrounds now they are green screening to turn their stories into movies #2pencilchat
A5: The clean-up song! A 3 or 4 minute song that plays when it's time to transition. Observers think it's magic. (My favorite: If I Had A Million Dollars) #2pencilchat
A5. As the testing queen this year, Google Sheets to keep with who has, and who hasn’t has been a life saver. Love, love, love my doc cam for letting everyone see. #2PencilChat
A5 Colorful art materials. This is our “Shape of My Life” exercise: each color represents a domain of life. Amount of the color = how important that domain is to the student. Writing = what the student does in that domain. #EMPOWERtools#2PencilChat
A5) TweenTribune and CNN Student News were bell work, Google Docs for collaboration, Skype daily with other students from other places, iMovie, and Symbaloo. #2pencilchat
I am taking a #MakerEd approach ... task before app ... we are making ... i want to get back to creativity ... I am an old shop kid that enjoyed making stuff ... want to spark that in the kids. #2pencilchat
A5: Random youtube shorts (appropriate), Mr. Abee doodles on the board and or arts and crafts randomly through the week. (Made slime a month ago...biggest incentive since Chromebooks! ) #2pencilchat
A5: I do a circle time activity with my kids called "Care Bear share". Students learn to interact positively with each other and clear misunderstandings amongst themselves if any. This contributes to a positive school culture. #2pencilchat
I love you SO MUCH,
#2PencilChat Pals!
Thank you for joining us tonight! I hope you'll share the coolest things you learn this Summah before school starts again in the fall...
A5: We have been doing restorative practices so I have circle time regularly and that replaced my former drill/opener. Q1 is always how are you feeling and sometimes why and then transition into student Qs or academic Qs and I like @GoNoodle for breaks #2pencilchat
They are, puns and dad jokes. I entertain myself.
Student today:“Are the joke telling snowmen important?”
Me: “no they were strictly for my entertainment” #2PencilChat
