Tonight's #Edchat topic: The "How to Learn" is a timeless teaching objective. An important and challenging question is: What are some other timeless or enduring teaching objectives?

#edchat Hello all! I am currently a pre-service teacher at Lesley University majoring in mathematics and secondary education. I also completed my Spanish minor this summer when I studied abroad in Barcelona.
I have a lot of low (BR) readers and understand a lot of it is listed oops for literacy so the vocabulary isn't there. How can I build that up without turning it into a vocab lesson and doing more than teaching thru the text? #t2t#edchat#nctevillage

Critical thinking is certainly an essential teaching objective. It is the best way to prevent any politician from governing by tweets and sound bytes. #Edchat
Today during an observation, I was trying to blend in when a multi-legged BUG fell from the ceiling and LANDED ON MY SHOULDER!! I had a silent freak out, while beating the BUG off my jacket. The kids were trying hard not to giggle! 🤦🏼♀️🤣😂😢 #edchat#adminlife
Current #Edchat discussion: The "How to Learn" is a timeless teaching objective. An important and challenging question is: What are some other timeless or enduring teaching objectives?
I think a critical teaching objective is to make sure that your students fully understand the material and understand why it works that way. I have had so many teachers explain a concept and the students are solely supposed to memorize it without any other knowledge. #edchat
Is that important for all material? I was required to take courses in college that I didn't understand, simply memorized. I haven't used any of it since, so I didn't really need to understand it. #Edchat
My favorite quote is from the 1997 national teacher of the year, Sharon Draper: English teachers teach reading, writing, thinking, and dreaming. Those are the overarching objectives, always.
#Edchat
Why I look at names when I grade is because I understand the human component to education. I realize, as a teacher, that I am not assessing and nurturing mere “students” but actual people. #edchat
Study skills is an age old teaching objective that now must include the strategies of how to use technology, and when not to use it at all, when studying. #Edchat
Valid point. As a math major however, it can frustrate me when a teacher explains an equation such as the Pythagorean Theorem without giving us any proof for the theorem. Many have just stated, "That's just how it works." A better understanding leads to longer retaining. #Edchat
Didn't necessarily mean our current political situation. I meant that there is an overabundance of information readily available. Important to know what is real and what is not. #edchat
While you offer a fair point, providing reasoning behind material and enabling someone the ability to pass the information along will create a better longevity for the material. Memorization may be easier but I always think it is better to fully grasp the content. #EdChat
Content is still king. But there's a more powerful Parliament these days. Why? Because one cannot "think deeply" or "apply" knowledge unless one has attained something ABOUT WHICH to think deeply and knowledge to apply. #Edchat
Where does teaching respect and tolerance fall in timeless teaching objectives? Should they be actively taught and reinforced on an ongoing basis in every grade level. #Edchat
#Edchat Collaboration and time management are skills I use every day and had to learn on my own over the years. Soft skills were not a focus when I was in school.

Introducing ideas before Ss have the scaffolding to understand the logic behind the ideas is, to me, a dangerous precedent. It says obedience is more important than comprehending what you are doing. Not good in math.....not good in life. #edchat

I think one of the most timeless objectives in learning is the ability to fail and continue learning from said failures until those failures become successes. Education always has failure; however, learning from that failure leads to true knowledge. Leads to improvement. #EDChat
Critical listening skills and practice are never out of style. The art of listening & looking past offense & not being whiny when people disagree is a sign of maturing and growth in relating to and getting along with others. #edchat#modeltheexpectation
I’m excited to announce that #TheCAPSTour will be headed to central California in a few weeks for our next stop! I’m looking forward to celebrating more schools, more students & more educators on this tour! West Coast we will see you soon! 😎 #GrowthMindset#ThePowerofYet
I fully agree with this! Each failure teaches us a new lesson no matter how big or small. I find that making mistakes is one of the most effective way to learn. Without failure, you won't know how to succeed. #Edchat
I am not sure that they are part of every classroom culture. How can we ensure that kids get it, if we don't identify, teach and practice respect and tolerance? #Edchat

Respect and tolerance should absolutely be taught on an ongoing basis. Being respectful to yourself and to others is one of the most crucial skills anyone can learn. Respect to oneself offers the ability to overcome mistakes. Respecting others offers varying perspectives. #EdChat
You must be willing to unlearn things especially if the shift will make you grow and deepen your ability & then be willing to relearn. #edchat#learning

Such a timely question & one we never stop teaching. It pops up when we least expect it making it a “#teachablemoment.” It’s in the way we talk, interact, model, facilitate discourse, & walk with students as the journey through how to communicate effectively. #edchat
Where does teaching respect and tolerance fall in timeless teaching objectives? Should they be actively taught and reinforced on an ongoing basis in every grade level. #Edchat
Do you think that time management skills are being taught in school? I definitely see collaboration, but not time management (both as a T and a P). #Edchat
#Edchat Collaboration and time management are skills I use every day and had to learn on my own over the years. Soft skills were not a focus when I was in school.
That should be the professional responsibility of any teacher. I would guess it’s up to the admin of each school to uphold it and I definitely think it needs to go beyond posters in the hallways. Culture is action. #edchat
I think that teachers building a connection with their students is a timeless teaching objective. The classroom environment is completely transformed when the teacher makes an effort to get to know his/her students. The students will always respond positively to that. #edchat
Like many school districts, where salaries are low compared to private-sector peers, Los Angeles Unified School District has chosen to compensate by providing its teachers with generous health benefits. https://t.co/pH9lhE3c71#EdChat#LAUSD@ChadAldeman@LASchools
I would say we can teach it whether it’s curriculum or not. We can model civility, kindness, & compassion. We can no longer & maybe never should assume that it will always be taught outside of school. We can help Ss navigate life. #edchat#modeltheexpectation
We try. I have students track their schedules for a week and discuss their time. We talk about procrastination. We create benchmarks for long term assignments. We scaffold these so that 9th are more hands on than 12th. Vertical alignment. #edchat

Is the major goal of teaching to: get kids in college, get kids a job, get kids enough skills to get by? Do educators have different objectives for each kid? #Edchat
@tomwhitby, you are being generous. I know for sure that respect and tolerance are not part of every classroom culture, not with the way some Ts speak about Ss and Ps..... #Edchat
I am not sure that they are part of every classroom culture. How can we ensure that kids get it, if we don't identify, teach and practice respect and tolerance? #Edchat
This right here!!! If you don’t model it then how can you expect to have a healthy culture, climate, or environment. You can’t. So use every teachable moment that comes and blending into the work of teaching. #edchat#modeltheexpectation
I can't remember a time where I specifically learned time management skills in the classroom. However, school naturally has taught me these skills. Without proper time management skills, you are setting yourself up for failure. #edchat
Is the major goal of teaching to: get kids in college, get kids a job, get kids enough skills to get by? Do educators have different objectives for each kid? #Edchat
Indeed it can be a challenge and I honk it’s the place where exponential growth is possible IF we’re willing to lean into it. #edchat#growthmindset#leanintoit

There is no "major goal" of "teaching." This is different for each school, per mission. This is not a bad thing. What's important is for each family to be able to choose a school whose mission is in line with their worldview. If it's college-prep or otherwise, so be it. #edchat
Is the major goal of teaching to: get kids in college, get kids a job, get kids enough skills to get by? Do educators have different objectives for each kid? #Edchat
The major goal of education is to create good people. People that give back to the world, that work their hardest and respect others. Teaching aims to make better people, people that consistently improve and never stop learning. I'm sure the listed goals apply too. #EdChat
Teachers need to model ... but to think it is our responsibility is a bit much to ask. It is a collaboration bbetween home and school and sometimes home drops the ball. #edchat
As long as there the student has passion for what they do, the teacher reached (one of many) goals! Doesn't matter on the education and skills. #edchat
My favorite quote is from the 1997 national teacher of the year, Sharon Draper: English teachers teach reading, writing, thinking, and dreaming. Those are the overarching objectives, always.

We created a req. Intro class for all 9th grades that includes skills like this, digital citizenship, copyright, presentation skills, and other skills we feel are essential to being successful in HS. But it is not a core curriculum. #edchat

What is respect? I am mostly called Dill and in the past I have been told that this is disrespectful ... kids respect the knowledge I pass on to them ... I do t care about the “respectful titles” #edchat
The goal is help Ss acquire, develop, & refine the skills that allow them to always have opportunity, freedom, & self respect - taking a page from @WhyTry. Help them harness social, emotional skills as they learn so they’ll be equipped to navigate life beyond school #edchat
Is the major goal of teaching to: get kids in college, get kids a job, get kids enough skills to get by? Do educators have different objectives for each kid? #Edchat
I do think that educators and schools have different objectives for different kids. Otherwise they wouldn't push accelerated/AP classes for some and vocational training for others. #Edchat
The major goal of education is to create good people. People that give back to the world, that work their hardest and respect others. Teaching aims to make better people, people that consistently improve and never stop learning. I'm sure the listed goals apply too. #EdChat
I fully agree. I feel like this may be one of the most difficult challenges that teachers face since many of my previous teachers have failed to do just this. Passion creates motivation, engagement, and creativity in a classroom. #edchat
As long as there the student has passion for what they do, the teacher reached (one of many) goals! Doesn't matter on the education and skills. #edchat
Soft skills, such as knocking on a doors before entering, manners, how to shape hands—— these are so very important and seem to be lacking in our tech focused students. #edchat
Yes, because then you’re getting to know your students individually and helping them plan for a life beyond the classroom. How empowering to have a teacher walk with a student toward success in all they set out to do based on their goals. #edchat#goalsetting#modelit
One of my main goals is to help kids develop the academic toolset, social skills, and confidence to achieve what ever goals they set for themselves in life #edchat
Teachers spend a large chunk of their lesson planning time building whole-class materials. Once they do so, they don’t have as much time to focus on complex classroom needs. https://t.co/llYoxwEE5M#EdChat
How much say do those kids have in that next phase. Are we preparing them for their personal goals, or the goals that are set for them by others? #Edchat
When someone says “That’s not my job,” what I hear is they’re overwhelmed, feel unappreciated/unnoticed for what they do, or don’t understand the purpose & potential impact. So much of what we do that makes an impact isn’t in our job descriptions unfortunately. It’s in our drive.
It’s unfortunate that we hyper focus on testing. And I get it but it can’t be at the expense of facilitating learning that honors the social/emotional learning needs of kids and how they can acquire those skills to navigate beyond the rest for life. #edchat
“Nothing flashy, nothing gleamed from social media. But in all ways it was an awesome lesson and exactly what every teacher should strive for.”
Make your regular moments seem extraordinary! Great post sharing the #gatorrunrocks story. Thank you @principalkp#bekindEDU#edchat
I would say we can also teach skills like how to overcome adversity and challenge - both applicable to testing but more importantly connected to life & being able to rise above failures. #edchat#realtalk
It has BECOME a major teaching objective in our current system. And b/c Ss, Ts, and schools are judged by test results, it has become an essential skill for our Ss. #Edchat
Only if you think it is essential to have many of the students know how to deal with stress and anxiety. (because life itself can be stressful and anxiety filled at any age!) #edchat
These “big goals” written in student-friendly language articulate what the discipline requires regardless of the teacher in front of you.
Be inspired to reframe how you introduce your discipline (as well as yourself) to your students!

I hope we’re getting out of the way so they can see their o b way forward. We don’t want to create mini us’s. We want them to be all them - we can guide and facilitate #edchat
