Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
Hey guys my name is Julia and I am a preservice teacher at Grove City College. Really interested to learn about the 21st century education! #21stedchat#gccedu
I am Michael. I teach high school ELA in North Providence, RI, and serve as an adjunct faculty member at @johnsonandwales in Providence. I also work with @PopClassroom belong bring comics and film into the classroom #21stedchat
A1: I think there is a very real class system in education in Canada. The disparity between rural and First Nations education and urban education is enormous. And kept going with technology gaps. It’s why we are educators: to change this and create equity. #21stedchat
I faced the same thing when I taught in the villages of Alaska 20+ years ago and judging from the papers now it is a tech and access to the internet issue #21stedchat
I don't want to be celebrated, I want people to be inspired. Tomorrow we host 200 educators from all over to see our PL schools in action, all our work is open to the public because we are all in this together! #21stedchat
A1: So true. My 3 kids were in school in Santa Monica, same age as my friend's 3 kids on a reservation. The level of math courses, AP classes, SAT prep offered was night and day. #21stedchat
A2: AP students have their own pressures and expectations, just like the other students. I think it’s about knowing your students, not their ‘class’. All want success and can achieve when supported by a caring adult. #21stedchat
A2: Educators need to focus on Habits of Mind, High Yield Instructional Strategies, Formative Assessment, Timely Feedback, & Interventions/Scaffolding.
These things should take place in standard-level classes and
AP classes. #21stedchat
A1. Yes absolutely. Some students receive special treatments or more attention due to certain privileges or the backgrounds they come from. #21stEdChat
A1: I once dropped off a job app at an inner city school. I had to speak to the admin asst through plexiglass after being buzzed in. There was no playground.
In my dist 30 mins away every S K-12 gets an iPad. Musicians play during lunch monthly. That’s a class system #21stEdChat
In the particular schools, no. My kids went to small Catholic schools that had about the same number of students ~80 students per grade in h.s. and their elementary/MS was actually somewhat bigger #21stedchat
You think charter schools are a problem? Not defending them but sometimes it is a way up for inner city kids...but at the expense of the public schools. #21stedchat
Q3: How can we as admin and teachers help change these situation? It seems it would have to be intentional even if the caste system created was unintentional? #21stedchat
A3 give all teachers equal tasks to allow everyone to shine. Or have every edu person in the room talk about something awesome they are doing #21stEdChat
When labels are placed on students, that’s all some can see. It blinds them to who they really are as individual learners. Our role is to remove those labels, not highlight them. #21stEdChat
A3: There are some immediate solutions:
1. Identify Learning Targets
2. Backwards Map/Plan
3. Use High-Yield Instructional Strategies
4.Use Formative Assessment
5. Personalized Learning
6. Teach towards Transfer Goals
7. Ask students to demonstrate understanding #21stedchat
Opportunity to Learn is created by teachers and administrators. Funding and school supplies are an issue, but educators/adults control OTL. #21stedchat
A2: Sadly, students who are jumping right into a career after school are sort of “pushed through” or not taken as seriously as students who are aiming to pursue higher education. I see this is schools now and it was this way when I was in school too. #21stedchat
Not by those in the building, but choices on funding, hiring, physical building maintenance are all@made by district and those choices often favor those with political voice. #21stEdChat
A3: Yes it will have to be intentional and it’s about showing up each and every day with intentions to remove biases. Teachers should constantly be aiming to foster an environment that supports ALL types of students. #21stedchat
It is explained in the article. This is the things in schools that impact teaching and learning. Examples: Walls, Messages Sent To Students, Grading Practices, Compliance vs Student Contribution, Library Books/Options, and Teacher/Student Relationships #21stedchat
A4: in my province, the teaching loaf of teachers is completely the purview of the administrator in the building. (Based on student and school need and undo hardship to teacher) #21stedchat
It is explained in the article. This is the things in schools that impact teaching and learning. Examples: Walls, Messages Sent To Students, Grading Practices, Compliance vs Student Contribution, Library Books/Options, and Teacher/Student Relationships #21stedchat
That’s true. Several of the barriers to teaching and learning are obvious. They are not obvious to the school staff. That is why Glatthorn used the term “Hidden Curriculum.” #21stedchat
If a teacher has the mindset that the kid is hard, then that’s a problem. At my school, we create classes (elementary) and I, as admin, assign teachers to the classes. There can be a desire to not place a certain teacher with a certain student for ‘peace’ #21stEdChat
A3: I teach graduate students. When there are conferences, scholarship opportunities, I send out notices to ALL of the students. I don't select who I think is most likely to apply or most likely to succeed #21stEdChat
A5 I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, highlighting the different castes can be illuminating - but they also can put Ss into boxes. #21stedchat
A5 I was part of a group of young teachers who got together and changed the culture of our school which had faced a pelthora of problems. See: My School Culture page https://t.co/nukenyKH4r#21stedchat
A6: Standards are not the problem. I don’t think every third grade teacher in the U.S. should determine what students should know and be able to do. #21stEdChat
A6: Standards provide school districts with a GPS. The local curriculum should support student understanding. The problem is with decisions made at the district level and a lack of instructional leadership. #21stEdChat
A7 When working in the law, I concurred that you get as much justice as you can afford. Saddens me that this notion is spreading to education. Thankfully, new edtech tools might help level the playing field #21stedchat
Based on @nathan_stevens comments tonight we may discuss the teacher class system in the future. Great chat again everyone. Join @Edu_Thompson as we discuss ELL's next week. #21stedchat
A7: Great Chat! Teachers and administrators do not control a student’s readiness level, Home life, or income. Educators determine Opportunity To Learn (OTL), Formative Assessment, and the Hidden Curriculum. #21stEdChat
