Good evening #champforkids crew! Tonight we are going #edcamp style! ANYONE can ask a Q! Start w/Q at the begininning and reply w/ A when you answer! Ask, share, and learn together!
School Counselor from VB!
A. By creating a learning environment where kids don’t even realize they’re “learning” My son says his favorite teachers were so fun he didn’t even know he “knew stuff” 😂 #champforkids
Q2 - Developing mastery can be challenging in today’s hectic world of hectic education. How do we accomplish this, while still getting through all the content? #champforkids
Craig, A1. I would say family culture needs to be the foundation then then the ❤️ of learning will happen;) know your kids passions and hook them;) #champforkids
I'm not sure how much homework is fair. But for my class, no homework will be collected or graded. Ss will have time at the beginning of class to ask each other 1st, me 2nd, about any problems. I want Ss doing hmwk for practice, not to collect points. #champforkids
I actually taught elementary before going to middle school...even 2nd grade for a year. 1st graders are just big KDGers. It's going to take time and patience. We are dealing with our son who has been a handful all summer moving into 2nd grade. They will get there. #champforkids
A - I try to avoid homework at all costs. While in some cases it’s impossible, it’s much better for the teacher and student to work together with a common goal, than to stress students out with work that frequently doesn’t translate to higher learning. #champforkids
I help Ss develop mastery and still get through content by NOT STOPPING the slowly moving train. We learn something new EVERY day. And we assess something, EVERY day. That assessment has spiraled items that Ss formerly struggled with. A new opp. for mastery! #champforkids
You will get there. Don't doubt yourself or your practice. Keep coming back here to refill your bucket. Keep in mind that we are just a DM away. And if you need me to, I can do a Google Hangout where I yell, scream, act silly, and tell horrible Dad jokes. #champforkids
A. When I talk to the parent and get to know a family, then mention something from home to a student- gets them every time and they are mystified. #champforkids@TraceyEnser
A - It all starts on day one. Look them in the eye, high fives, learning names, build connections. I love to chat with each student for just 30 seconds during a class. Small time=huge gain. #champforkids
A: We are spending time learning about mindfulness. Today we talked about feelings and the zones of regulation. We also explored the calming corner tools. #champforkids
A - My goals are:
* happy everyday, every class
* smile with all students.
* learn what they lov
* empower kids to find their passion
* develop a class community #champforkids
One things that I’ve done the past few years is open up a lot more about my own life. I talk a lot about my own family and listen and ask questions about my students families. #champforkids
A @TraceyEnser I greet them as they come into class, speak to them individually, play frisbee with them when I’m on yard duty, have conversations in the hall when I see them #champforkids
My number one goal this year is to have fun every single day #champforkids That doesn’t mean that somedays won’t be in the mathematical weeds, but we can actively choose to bring positivity and enthusiasm everyday!
A1: I am real. I tell my life story and acknowledge which stories I won’t tell, ss have both kinds of stories too. I tell ridiculous stories, ask even more ridiculous questions. if you listen, they will tell you a lot about each ss, no matter how ridiculous the Q. #champforkids
Take time for them. Happened today. We have a girl from Bulgaria that barely speaks. We hung out in the office until her bus came back to pick her up. The admin were astonished I was able to get through to her. I did nothing special except listen to her story. #champforkids
A. My main goal this year is to be out in classrooms as much as possible! Build relationships with teachers and be their support throughout the year. #champforkids
A) A good sense of humor never hurts, plus I’m not afraid to show my weaknesses or vulnerabilities in front of them. Genuineness is felt deeply. #champforkids
A. My goals are to build stronger relationships with parents and other teachers., have full engagement in class and to be more organized! (Off to a good start!) #champforkids
A: My goals for this year: successfully teach guided math (something new), use more mindfulness and calming techniques, help my students enjoy learning. #champforkids
A for @TraceyEnser - we used an #eduprotocol smartstart today where Ss interviewed each other. I found out that a student takes tennis lessons from someone that used to give me tennis lessons. #smallworld#champforkids
I only gave daily reading & encouraged them to choose areas of interest to work on student paced projects of their choice. An article I read said other hw isn't notably beneficial. Otherwise, they completed incomplete work but I tried not to give more than that. #champforkids
One thing I have neglected in the past is building better relationships with parents. A huge goal of mine to to make at least 2 celebration phone calls a week! #champforkids
A. I think it depends on the kid. Ex. My daughter is rule rigid and son is a dreamer. Completely different learning preferences. Montessori mastery was the only way to keep my son focused, but my daughter needed more flexibility to think about connections. #champforkids
It depends on the idea. For some ideas, it is vital that Ss attain mastery before moving on. For others, an exposure will suffice. As with most ideas.....context and details matter. #champforkids
It must be going around!! I know they will improve. It is just I have a nonverbal student who makes noises with an aide, a refusing student with another aide, another student who shares the aides if needed, and then the rest of the class-lots of noise. #champforkids

A. Reading up on group dynamics is always good. Groups often take time to gel and go through phases to get to cohesion no matter what the age. #champforkids@kaitlyralston
A: I usually allow them to form their own groups. We also always start with an icebreaker question to get everyone chatting. It’s a great starrr for kids who may be intimidated or quiet. Also, keeping the directions on point. #champforkids
In our Lab, we have been discussing scenarios and team building puzzles. The main focus was to have them pay attention to how they were listening with their eyes and their ears. We needed to train on communication before collaborating on curricular engagements. #champforkids
It is Reagan Tunstall's materials. I plan on following the guidance of 6 min. warmup, 15 min instruction, and the rest of the hour with small groups and stations with about a five min. wrapup. Centers include manips., journal, tech, application, and me. #champforkids
A) I visibly randomize groups every day. If they’re going to be working with new people daily, some ground rule expectations firm up real quick. #champforkids
It's a difficult transition from having total freedom to do and say whatever you want, whenever you want, on your terms, at home, to go to being a part of a larger community that has to take into consideration the needs of many. Extra grace required, even for us. #champforkids

One thing I read today that I loved was expecting excellence isn’t the same as perfection. Instead seeking to get better or go beyond. I worry so much about things going perfect rather than just trying my best! #champforkids#culturize
A; #champforkids yes, I think mastery is the end goal always. I think teachers should master a subject and I think students should master their content.
I totally agree! And depending on the age, sometimes picking their own partners eliminates some stress and allows an opportunity to self-regulate to get to keep their buddies #champforkids
So am I!! It looks really good and I purchased her materials, so I just have to make some stuff, not create it. We start learning the process next week. #champforkids
A: Be relentlessly positive. There will clearly be days you struggle but don’t let the bad days add up. Set up faculty pot luck lunches, lunch win the principal, raffles for gift cards to cool places, sit in preschool classrooms! #champforkids
I used Google Classroom to create groups with Google Drive assignments they could collaborate on live, but they each had specific roles and responsibilities. Great way to introduce discussions of teamwork and appropriate behavior as well as responsibility. #champforkids
To build team building skills I always start with low stakes, team building activities the first week. I preach WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER! Learning can’t be passive, so I’m the annoying dude who makes them work wit people they don’t know #champforkids
This summer I tried to give my students as many seating options as possible with the few resources available to me. I don’t make a big deal of it, I tell students to pick a place that is going to help them learn best and only intervene as needed. #champforkids
I show the choices and then we start using them. When troubles arise, we talk as a group how to fix them and what shifts need to be done. It is a little hectic the first few weeks, but once the newness wears off, the kids usually find what works for them. #champforkids
If you intervene, how do you handle that? I’m doing some flexible seating and worried about all the negative things that could happen. I guess I need to have more faith in them. #champforkids
When you find the group of people you lean on, celebrate with a catch phrase. This year, @robinkuhn has us saying "It's just eczema, it will be fine"-just like the commercial. We know what she means and it makes us smile. #champforkids
I never fully introduced flexible seating but another teacher introduced some limitations for specific students that needed them, such as having certain kids choose seating in areas away from each other. Otherwise, she let them sit anywhere. #champforkids
