#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?
Here's a preview of tonight's questions! Lots of ideas with lots of different kinds of dice!
We'll follow the Q1/A1 format tonight!
Q1 comes at :06! #games4ed
Heya John! I just bought my first few sets of Storycubes this summer. Definitely want to hear more about what you and @nathan_stevens do with them. #games4ed

Hello all! Mike Neumire, instructional technology specialist in Rochester, NY. My favorite dice game would probably be Monopoly. Rage and all. #games4ed
Evening #games4ed. N from 🇨🇦, #edtech creator/cofounder/enthusiast.
I'm here with half a brain tonight and glad this is virtual and I can't get you all sick. Who gets pneumonia in the summer? (answer: me)
Ooh, love sorry. But had to institute a new rule with my nephew who would get upset if anyone took out his pieces. New rule was as soon as he overreacts, game was over. Games went surprisingly well after. #games4ed
I totally wanted to add a monopoly GIF here, but on my daughter's computer due to my Chromebook meltdown 20 minutes ago and can't figure it out yet!!! #games4ed
A1. I love making custom dice for our class games! Download a template for a six, 8, or 12 sides die and place custom images on each side to correspond with different classroom centers. Provides the feeling of “random choice” for an instant shot of engagement! #games4ed
Whew, getting there! First full week, and starting to feel a routine with the students. And my new ones are starting to understand my ways ;) What about you? #games4ed
Today in my math games elective, I told the whole class they could win a full bag of halloween candy if they correctly predicted ten coin flips in a row.
The whole class was out after 3 flips.
So I changed the rules a bit.
A2: I didn't play DnD as a youth (sad), but including dice and chance would be a really cool way to pump up choose-your-own-adventure stories and get students collaborating and giving feedback on others' stories #games4ed
A2 Last year we made dice with paper and wrote verbs and pronouns on them, had to conjugate. But could use regular dice to align with a system of verbs by number and pronouns maybe #games4ed
There's a big bang theory ep where Sheldon decides to use dice to make all his choices (roll to choose item on menu, etc). I think it'd be fun to do this for a day as another experiment (and realization) on a) how many choices you make and b) how much control you want #games4ed
A3: Story creation is the primary focus...but it would be fun if students created their own meaning for the symbols on the dice, and had unique actions for each #games4ed
A3: I am learning about story cubes tonight! In a creative writing elective, I had students brainstorm characters, settings, conflicts, etc and draw them randomly from story element jars. Those ended up being some of my favorite stories! #games4ed
A3- I’ve never used story cubes but my first thought is using with vocabulary. They could roll and then have to incorporate the cubes with a vocabulary word in a sentence or paragraph to make sense. #games4ed
A3 group quick writing challenges, I’ve used them for class are challenges, they can be used for speech or debate showdowns. You could use them as inspiration for PE game creation #games4ed
Similar to Roll the Dice activities where I associate questions or activities based on the roll of one or two dice - this is the one I share in my book Personalized Reading: Digital Strategies & Tools to Support All Learners
https://t.co/JQURXgAAZk#games4ed
A4: More choice, more risk/reward. During boss battles if a team gets 3 answers in a row right they get to trade in the 6-sider for a 10-sider, great if you roll a 9...not so great if you roll a 0 #games4ed
A3: I think @nathan_stevens told me this idea...students roll story cubes and try to relate the symbols to what they learned in class the day before. #games4ed
For some labs we're the independent variable is easy to change I sometimes use dice. Give basic lab procedures and change IV to... Roll... 1 = increase time 2 = decrease time 3 = increase mass... if that makes sense? #games4ed

A4 number selector dmdor graphing in math. Tools selector for an activity. Have students roll to select a fact or historical choice and have them defend it #games4ed
Cool idea, and great way to actually start to see impact of some of these. Especially when easy as a S to think only some matter (not enough time to test all). #games4ed

Q4 D12 & D20 are my go to dice for RPGs and also for student created games and challenges, we have a dice center they they can pull from as they brainstorm and create #games4ed
A4: As an ELA teacher you can use higher number dice with page number rolls or the amount of words in a response/summary - can even have Ss select an important quote on specific page or chapter #games4ed
A4 I have a card students can use and roll a D100. If they can name the element that matches that atomic number they get XP. Tough but they love trying. #games4ed
I also liked a similar idea I saw at ISTE this summer...give them a crazy photo and ask them to connect it with yesterday's lesson. I did it with faculty for PD, but not with students yet! #games4ed

This is great! Probably too hard for my kiddos, but i5 made me think of just random science facts. I could put a list together of questions that have corresponding numbers and then do the same idea. #games4ed FUN!
A5: So great! Easily add whatever numbers or symbols you want or need! Can use for any subject. Get Ss to map out a clue like Indiana Jones hoping on floor tiles #games4ed
Never thought of this, but cool idea. Rolling a die for a scene in an Act of Macbeth, and find what you feel is the most important line in that scene! Love it! And could work for any kind of text...in a news article, could go by sections or paragraphs! #games4ed

:) Thanks! It can also help Ss that paralyzed by project media choice. e.g. Can't decide between doing a song, model, writing to demo understanding? Roll for it. #games4ed

A5: I've thrown vocabulary words on them. Or a beginning of a question, such as "How does..." and then students have to finish creating the question. #games4ed
@tishrich introduced me to erasable dice and I love personalizing them with character names, plot structure and even types of conflict - literary devices too #games4ed
A5 - Scrabble - but instead of pre-selected tiles, on your turn roll the dice 6 (or however many letters you want) and then try to spell a word. Or roll, and then have to give a vocab word with that letter #games4ed
Yes, you can do lots of fun things with the lines and acts of any Shakespeare play. Also, if we are talking about poetry you can associate with how many lines to write #games4ed
A6: Letter dice can do lots of different games and even blend with banana grams or play boggle to make words or alphabet key ideas or events in book students are reading #games4ed
A6: I love Scattergories...how about roll a letter and write as many words about a concept, such as Beowulf or Battle of Gettysburg or volcanoes? #games4ed
Q7: Many educators, such as Ryan Read and Craig Badura, have used App Dice as a way to get kids app smashing.
How could this idea be modified beyond apps? How could something like this work in your classes? #games4ed
Ooh, or start with rolling say 8 letters, and then make a word (any length). Roll to replace the letters you used, and keep going until you have 8 letters left and can't make any words. See how long you can last. #games4ed
Absolutely! After the Grendel scene, I have the kids read an excerpt from Grendel and then talk about perspective and its impact. Such a great text to compare with the classic! #games4ed
A7: Modifying a dice review game (number review index cards and stick them randomly in field or hide in class, teams add dice rolls to find new question, keep going to 200) into a slow play that is activity based and rewards taking risks and branching out! #games4ed
Fun twist afterwards, have someone else start with same initial 8 and see if they can beat the score (they get replacement letters in same order as first - once they pass first and need more letters, start rolling dice again). #games4ed
I'm so glad you mentioned this! My last period talked today about creating a huge collaborative story with all of them and all my other Brit Lit students! This would be a great way to choose who gets to add a new section every day! #games4ed
You can also number sentences in a collaborate writing assignment and each Ss rolls which sentence they are writing - can also have Ss write first then roll for placement #games4ed

A8 Added a few more things to my Dollar Tree shopping list for before the start of school. If only business types knew what great marketing goes on in these chats. #games4ed
Yes! I was thinking of doing this in groups--maybe not with dice--but giving them letters in order and see how they use them all and compare how they did it differently. Fewest letters at the end wins! #games4ed
A8: I am going to buy the letter dice now that you shared that with me, @mpilakow and make sure to bring in dice more frequently with my gaming #games4ed
Great concept! Totally takes isolated concepts and makes kids think about how they connect with each other! And kids could also make their own paper dice and put their own concepts on there...then group up with other students to play #games4ed
I was just thinking that every time I jump into a #xplap and #games4ed chat my Amazon cart gets bigger with more games and toys. I feel like Betty Bunny in the picture book Betty Bunny Wants Everything
