#EduColor was created both as a resource for intersectional discussions of race and education and as a safe space. Therefore, even though hashtags are open to the public, those of us who started it reserve the right to push back and challenge tweets we see as leading the discussion astray (see “derailing” for more details). This includes using #educolor on bios, blog titles, and paraphernalia.
Q0: Welcome! Introduce yourself & tell us what brings you here tonight. [NOTE: In responses, use Q1, Q2 / A1, A2 format & #EduColor hashtag] #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
Hi #EduColor - my name is Phiona; I’m an equity and inclusive education resource teacher in Ontario. I’m happy to be joining this evening to talk about where we go from here in our schools.
Hey! My name is Jennifer from UW-Platteville as well. I am in my last semester studying to be a teacher before student teaching. I'm looking forward to this rich experience. #EduColor
Waddup fam! I'm Christina, special educator in NC. I'm here because #EduColor of course. I want to learn more about #BlackLiveMatterAtSchool and I how I can get involved.
Hi all, Scott from MD. I'm a 6-12 ELA Instructional Specialist. Thursday night soccer league is over, happy to finally join #Educolor to learn with you all.
Hi #EduColor. Mel here, student teacher/pre-service teacher in New Jersey. Looking forward to sharing in the collective wisdom and love, and both reflecting on/building on the work of #BlackLivesMatteratSchool.
#Educolor Yes. The fact that after Sandy Hook, and after every shooting, our government saw it fit to keep current gun laws and trying to move forward with arming teachers....
Q1 Starting as a week in 1926 then extending to a month in 1976, as a country we celebrate Black History Month in February. How are Black lives recognized in your educational community during this time? #EduColor
Q1 Starting as a week in 1926 then extending to a month in 1976, as a country we celebrate Black History Month in February. How are Black lives recognized in your educational community during this time? #EduColor#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
A0: My name is Zack, I'm a middle-school special ed teacher & I'm here to learn more about what I can do to show that #BlackLivesMatteratSchool.
#EduColor
A1 in our school it really left to individual Ts to address it as they want. The school did endorse & support #BlackLivesMatteratSchool week with speakers & student projects #EduColor
Q1 Starting as a week in 1926 then extending to a month in 1976, as a country we celebrate Black History Month in February. How are Black lives recognized in your educational community during this time? #EduColor
#Educolor A1 African-American Family Celebration Breakfast! Unfortunately... only 1 African-American parent not already working at the school showed up. Attendance was...lacking. And disappointing that it was lacking.
A1 I wish Black lives were explicitly recognized at my school. My Ss walk around calling themselves "the 8%" and have this "other" mentality. We (pronoun used intentionally) often feel isolated. #EduColor
#Educolor A1 African-American Family Celebration Breakfast! Unfortunately... only 1 African-American parent not already working at the school showed up. Attendance was...lacking. And disappointing that it was lacking.
A1 Not with anything near the reverence that black lives deserve. We're having a program but it's very cutesy stuff. I only get to the depth of understanding that I need in my classroom #educolor
A1 Not at all, last yr. This yr feels obligatory: assembly, decorated doors, etc. Looking forward to an all-yr conversation instead of a 1-time celebration. #Educolor
A1: I recognize it w/celebration, starting w/the Harlem Renaissance. Sadly, the rest of my building seems to be doing very little to celebrate Black History Month. #EduColor
Q1 Starting as a week in 1926 then extending to a month in 1976, as a country we celebrate Black History Month in February. How are Black lives recognized in your educational community during this time? #EduColor
A1. Our building was very limited recognizing the contributions of people of color. However, my class will start a themed unit on this which will last till the end of the year. #EduColor#EDA655
Q1 Starting as a week in 1926 then extending to a month in 1976, as a country we celebrate Black History Month in February. How are Black lives recognized in your educational community during this time? #EduColor
#BHM is celebrated in a number of ways -from singing, dancing & eating to recognition of Black people of note. Every so often some Ts may encourage critical reflection on the histories, legacies, contributions & contemporary realities of Black people #EduColor
Q1 Starting as a week in 1926 then extending to a month in 1976, as a country we celebrate Black History Month in February. How are Black lives recognized in your educational community during this time? #EduColor
I can answer this just by saying that as we speak, there's a #blacklivesmatter action at the University of Vermont that just shut down traffic in and out of the city for ~2 hours because of lack of response from administration to SoC needs #educolor
I wonder how many schools and districts are the same. Mine did not have any collective celebration or acknowledgement. So I met with the superintendent...#EduColor#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
#Educolor A1 In addition, we have a very solid support with excellent role model in the form of our African American Male Assistant Principal, EAs, and an overworked Ed Equity specialist.... It's there, and we're all trying to do our best to keep recognizing Black lives
Q2 A call to action through Black Lives Matter at School -#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool- was made to have a week of action starting February 5th. Did your school community participate? Why or why not? #EduColor
#Educolor Honestly, I'm not sure. From what I gathered, flyers were sent home, reminders from Principal emailed to parents.... I'm pretty sure that word of mouth also existed, but I'm sure there could've been more done. I know many of our staff did spread it to other parents
A1+1...but the district where I work has a Black History Bowl and many campus celebrations this month and throughout the year to honor the heritage of the students and parents in our community. #educolor
Q2 A call to action through Black Lives Matter at School -#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool- was made to have a week of action starting February 5th. Did your school community participate? Why or why not? #EduColor
Q2 A call to action through Black Lives Matter at School -#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool- was made to have a week of action starting February 5th. Did your school community participate? Why or why not? #EduColor
A1 There are celebrations and daily announcements, but I want kids to dig deeper in my class. Example: We watched this @ClintSmithIII poem and discussed a more true version of history #educolorhttps://t.co/ev70ZQSyrZ
A1. Our students are leading this year's school-wide program, Black to Our Roots. Black students have written poems and narratives to share as well as selected Black protest music throughout the various decades to perform. #educolor
A1 Community organizations have city wide events planned. It is at the discretion of the school principal to celebrate Black History Month - most don't recognize it at all. #EduColor
Q1 Starting as a week in 1926 then extending to a month in 1976, as a country we celebrate Black History Month in February. How are Black lives recognized in your educational community during this time? #EduColor
A1: In my classroom, we participated in the #BlackLivesMatteratSchoolWeek + continue to highlight black perspectives, stories, voices (although we do this ever day!) the rest of the month. Our "Black History Month" Book Bin is very popular w/Ss! #EduColor
A1 Laurie in Raleigh NC. I work with schools throughout the state & don’t have a “home base,” but the school I was in today was hosting a program for students/families. #EduColor
#Educolor | For us to move forward as a nation, a core understanding MUST be developed & nurtured, otherwise, we'll continue to have 1600 conversations in the year of tech advancement but empathetic treatment decline.
They don't have any celebrations because they don't want to "single anyone out". They have also said the parent group and students didn't plan anything, so they didn't have anything planned. #EduColor
Q2 A call to action through Black Lives Matter at School -#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool- was made to have a week of action starting February 5th. Did your school community participate? Why or why not? #EduColor
Including our stories in the history that we teach. Textbooks have erased them. I was “assigned” Brown v Board of Ed in my building, but my Ss studied it for the whole month. #EduColor
A2 I was not familiar about the call to action! I’m sure I would have participated. It didn’t seem like my building or district knew/participated either! #EduColor#EDA655
Q2 A call to action through Black Lives Matter at School -#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool- was made to have a week of action starting February 5th. Did your school community participate? Why or why not? #EduColor
Q2 I think my school sadly did not feel a push to participate given the predominantly white student body though I know others in VT did and my UU congregation offered support to them for taking action #educolor
#Educolor Since I'm new to the building (field experience last year, student teaching this semester) I'm not too sure, but I was talking w/organizer and one of the teachers and they gave off impression it wasn't unusual.
A2: My district has had official events to celebrate. But, to my knowledge, my school did not do anything. I thing I was too caught up in my own Black History Month social-studies unit. :/ #EduColor
Q2 A call to action through Black Lives Matter at School -#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool- was made to have a week of action starting February 5th. Did your school community participate? Why or why not? #EduColor
My son has shared his disappointment with me several times this week, so he's planning a meeting with campus admin and his peers. I am disappointed because I see celebrations for things that seem to matter to them. This should be one. #EduColor
A2 I wasn't aware of #BlackLivesMatteratSchool until midway through the week and tried to plug in on social media and shared resources with colleagues. #EduColor
A1 One topic our school researched was the dozens of free and enslaved African Americans who worked among those mining for and refining lead in the Driftless Region. It was a community partnership with the Mining & Rollo Jamison Museum in Platteville. @erinedgington#EduColor
#Educolor A2 I doubt anyone but me knew about #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool and I only really knew the weekend before. I wasn't able to do much, unfortunately.
yes the real goal is to move from a once a year dusting off of the same 4-5 lessons. But a curriculum that includes all voices &s stories
through out the year #EduColor
A1 Not at all, last yr. This yr feels obligatory: assembly, decorated doors, etc. Looking forward to an all-yr conversation instead of a 1-time celebration. #Educolor
Q3 Reflecting on the #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool Week of Action, what organizing moment -- either one you participated in or one you witnessed online -- stood out to you most? #EduColor
A2 I'm not sure if my school community knew about #BlackLivesMatteratSchool or not. I did not even catch it until it was already happening. We've been discussing #BLM since September in my class though #educolor
Q2 A call to action through Black Lives Matter at School -#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool- was made to have a week of action starting February 5th. Did your school community participate? Why or why not? #EduColor
A2: I think this is a really important point -- how segregated, predominately white schools critically analyze power and privilege as a way to work in solidarity with and organize for #BlackLivesMatteratSchool. #EduColor
Q2 I think my school sadly did not feel a push to participate given the predominantly white student body though I know others in VT did and my UU congregation offered support to them for taking action #educolor
A1. We're also starting every day in class by discussing a figure in history who has been neglected by whitewashed history books. We've discussed figures like Bayard Rustin, bell hooks, Shirley Chisholm, Carol Moseley Braun, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy. #educolor
A2 I have so many thoughts on why as a school we didn't take a stand. The first thing is our school receives funding from some very all lives matter folks and I thinkthe principal didn't want to ruffle feather even though this schl serve 96% black kids #educolor
A2: Yes we did. We recognized it across our school and teachers across all grades developed lessons during crew to unpack the BLM principles with students. #EduColor
Q2 A call to action through Black Lives Matter at School -#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool- was made to have a week of action starting February 5th. Did your school community participate? Why or why not? #EduColor
A1 cont'd: We also try to highlight Black voices through our current literacy unit: Biographies and Essays! Students chose to learn & write about @gabrielledoug, Shirley Chisholm, Rosa Parks, Dominique Dawes, Bessie Coleman, Muhammad Ali, Josephine Baker & more! #educolor
Q3 Reflecting on the #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool Week of Action, what organizing moment -- either one you participated in or one you witnessed online -- stood out to you most? #EduColor
I'm of color, and I personally don't have color preference, but STRONGLY desire to live in diverse communities of color, NOT all like me esp when raising children. #EduColor
A2 This year, I was a movement of 1 and made connections with others who want to organize next year. Many districts in this area that service MOSTLY SOC are still afraid to take a stand and say #BlackLivesMatter because they don't want to "take a side". Baffles me. #educolor
First year of organizing nationally for a week, but Seattle and Philadelphia are deep in this work and organized in years past. Lemme find a good article about this! #EduColor
My students write every day (12th grade English) based on a text (photo, graph, chart, painting, quote, etc.). I regularly included texts from #BLM to get them thinking and writing, which opens up our conversations #EduColor
Seeing a lot of this attitude in my district... I often feel like a movement of one, but I'm committed to connecting with folks who are willing to take a stand and say #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool#EduColor
I'll know a solid answer once my son has a meeting with them. They're really good about listening to students, but I feel as if this is something adults should also recognize. I'm all for students leading, but we have to set the example. #EduColor
A2: My coteacher & I participated, but not with our school - just on our own. We felt strongly about joining the larger movement & having those important conversation w/our 3rd graders. #educolor
A2 no, and I'm not sure why it wasn't...maybe I should've pushed for it. Not sure what it would look like at the first grade level and would love some insight from those who did do it. #EduColor
A3: I saw a few schools raise the flag and thought it was very powerful. Also immediately thought that there had to be a greater amount of community organizing that made that happen.. an amount I could never see my own School mustering. #EduColor
Q4 At the heart of #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool is the idea that we humanize our schools with anti-racism and anti-oppression at the center. How do we not lose sight of these principles?
#EduColor
A1, Year-round process which just gets even more intentional in Feb. Ex- rhetoric unit was grounded in making Dr. King Jr and Sojourner Truth texts interact. Can’t say much about other ELA classes at my school though. #EduColor
Not gonna lie when I saw this on Twitter during #BlackLivesMatteratSchool week, I teared up. I can't imagine what it feels like for those Black Ss & Ts to see that flag flying and to have that kind of community support. What a beautiful statement this community made. #EduColor
Seeing a lot of this attitude in my district... I often feel like a movement of one, but I'm committed to connecting with folks who are willing to take a stand and say #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool#EduColor
A2. I didn't see anything publicly that showed participation. I know that my little brother's school didn't do anything. It's a mostly dominate white school, though. I'm concerned that smaller towns with little diversity don't do enough to educate the community. #EduColor
A3: The one below! Our students felt so strongly about displaying our values to our community as a class that they took the initiative to make a poster. #EduColor
Our school is definitely in tune and celebrating--I'm trying to figure out as a white educator how to make it real, to engage in real thought and conversation. I feel wrong sharing info about a black scientist who I had never heard of and never talking about it again #EduColor
A2 I think class to class in my schl teachers were afraid to try something thinking that whatever was done had to be grandiose. I remember my first year teaching we just did portraits of our families as an art gallery. Everyone walked through the school. It was lovely #educolor
Q3 Reflecting on the #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool Week of Action, what organizing moment -- either one you participated in or one you witnessed online -- stood out to you most? #EduColor
A3 The community involvement and student voice in Jersey fired me up to do more and support the youth around me to open their eyes and lead. I followed the full week of activities via social media. #EduColor
Q3 Reflecting on the #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool Week of Action, what organizing moment -- either one you participated in or one you witnessed online -- stood out to you most? #EduColor

Would love to hear about your social justice club... My Black Student Association wants to focus on social justice and sharing what that means with the larger school communicty #EduColor
People forget that our students and our communities are making history right now so if you don't know the history or feel you can't do it justice you can still celebrate the present #educolor
#Educolor A4 Also, having that physical support network within the same building. I've found a mentor in my student teaching site that I always go to, to remind me whenever I feel like I'm straying. That proximity means they know the Ss, the school, can help me navigate
A4) check and re-check our plans for culturally responsive education. We have a director of diversity who is amazing at catching our biases and redirecting, helping us all grow - TOCs and white teachers #educolor
A4) By engaging stakeholders: families, community leaders and others representing a demographic cross-section of the region. By teaching it as a universal American and human value, regardless of the demographics of the particular community where a school resides. #educolor
Q4 At the heart of #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool is the idea that we humanize our schools with anti-racism and anti-oppression at the center. How do we not lose sight of these principles?
#EduColor
Would love to hear about your social justice club... My Black Student Association wants to focus on social justice and sharing what that means with the larger school communicty #EduColor
Not an answer to the questions, but I think there's an overall lack of comprehension of culture, the core issue of race relations in this country. #EduColor
Q4 At the heart of #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool is the idea that we humanize our schools with anti-racism and anti-oppression at the center. How do we not lose sight of these principles?
#EduColor
Yes, the community aspect was extremely important in making that happen. Why couldn't you see that in your community? #EduColor#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
A4 How do we not lose sight when our school/district hasn't event glanced in that direction? My frustration is trying to get folks to take a long, hard look at racism and systemic oppression at school. #EduColor
I'm curious how schools research, learn about, and honor the legacy of those *not* well-known and currently studied... and how we critically analyze who gets celebrated in schools. #EduColor
Black Lives Matters is so overtly slandered by certain political/media groups, but in reality the movement isn't anti-cop. The movement believes that blue lives matter, but wants accountability for police while their own humanity is recognized, respected, & protected #cleartheair
#Educolor A4 My biggest struggle is that I hear of other StuT's TeachEd experiences being IMMERSED in anti-racism and anti-oppression, while mine was severely lacking, esp as majority of my graduating class are white, that's like 140something future educators...
A4: integrative antiracism & decolonization have to be at the forefront of our work. In the face of push back & efforts to stymie the fight for equity, inclusion & justice we have to stay centred, stay true to our core beliefs. #EduColor
A4. PD and teachers' knowledge base keeps coming up for me. *Who* is being read at meetings/PD? That sends institutional messages about expertise and *whose* knowledge matters. (Aside: folks can chill with the Ken Robinson videos; we get it). #educolor
Q5 How do we individually and collectively continue the work of organizing for Black lives and upholding the 13 principles of Black Lives Matter in school beyond this week of action? (13 principles: https://t.co/Bjzn41I7sW)
#EduColor
A4: Luckily my kids' school is FULL of diversity and the teachers do a great job of teaching about the different cultures. My daughter's class has students from 9 counties in it. #EduColor#eda655
A4: While #BlackLivesMatterAtSchoolWeek is wonderful for organizing on a larger level, anti-racism + anti-oppression work needs to happen ALL the time. It has to be part of teaching & learning for Ts, Ss, & admin. #educolor#educolor
People forget that our students and our communities are making history right now so if you don't know the history or feel you can't do it justice you can still celebrate the present #educolor
A4: Given the political polarization w/in our society, I think schools must allow students to discuss issues that matter to them - during advisory or homeroom. Generation Z is showing that they're capable of leading, so the adults should give them the space to do so.
#EduColor
Say, like @mel_katzz whose TeachEd experiences seems to be living #Educolor
Not only that, my TeachEd program was undergoing overhaul, my cohort were the first... The push for antiracism/antioppression was there, but more like a nudge. Needs more....
I'm sure my PLT is tired of hearing me say, "Can we PLEASE read a different speech than 'I Have a Dream'?" or "Y'all know there were other prolific Black people right? #EduColor
Yes!! This is that long-term, difficult work that too many schools, admin, and (white) teachers don't want to engage in because it's harder than displaying a book about culturally responsive teaching or fluffy work that isn't rooted in anti-racism/anti-oppression. #EduColor
Not gonna lie when I saw this on Twitter during #BlackLivesMatteratSchool week, I teared up. I can't imagine what it feels like for those Black Ss & Ts to see that flag flying and to have that kind of community support. What a beautiful statement this community made. #EduColor
A3. Idk if this is an organizing moment, but educators flooded social media with impressive syllabi, texts, activities. The fountain of knowledge was extra deep and varied this year for me. #EduColor
A4: While #BlackLivesMatterAtSchoolWeek is wonderful for organizing on a larger level, anti-racism + anti-oppression work needs to happen ALL the time. It has to be part of teaching & learning for Ts, Ss, & admin. #educolor#educolor

A3: I didn't participate in anything, unfortunately. However, Ihad the honor of hear these inspiring young people share their stories. #EduColorhttps://t.co/jbpLXh1tJX
Q3 Reflecting on the #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool Week of Action, what organizing moment -- either one you participated in or one you witnessed online -- stood out to you most? #EduColor

#EduColor
*insert plug for Zaretta Hammond @Ready4rigor here* (Culturally Responsive Teaching And The Brain has been our whole faculty discussion guide this year) #EduColor
To varying degrees. As you know, most of our educators are white and not all are in the same place of understanding or readiness to push for true equity. I continue to try to bring other white educators to the table--it is a process #EduColor
This was such a great idea. I'm inspired by your students feeling strongly about displaying their values as a class. I hope to have a classroom where my students are passionate about expressing their values to the community as a class also. It sends a powerful message. #EduColor
#Educolor Heck yes, especially since said mentor has been through a lot, my Filipino mentality of "Model minority" has sheltered me, growing up, the experience was invaluable.
A5: I think the students should take the lead. They're far more comfortable in discussing topics that the adults have been conditioned to avoid in public. We know the latter approach hasn't really worked, so let the students take the lead.
#EduColor
Q5 How do we individually and collectively continue the work of organizing for Black lives and upholding the 13 principles of Black Lives Matter in school beyond this week of action? (13 principles: https://t.co/QQU9wjOxI6…)
#EduColor#BlackLivesMatterAtSchool
A4. Keep working on culturally responsive classroom and schools and stop resorting to pretending that racism is a valid viewpoint, or read traumatic texts by “authors who just lived a in diff time” #EduColor
Hard to do when the school district I work in is doing nothing to support efforts towards anti-racism and anti-oppression. I am wondering, how do people find support outside the district/administration? #educolor
A4: I'm not convinced schools allow for any prolonged focus on anti-oppression. The problem continues to be the nature and structure of school . If we want to focus on anti-oppression we need something different. #Educolor
Absolutely! I've been doing the same thing. Our curriculum units are written with blinders on. We have to teach our kids to recognize who is missing and invite them to the conversation through literature, research, and personal connections #EduColor
A5. When queer issues in ed are brought up (and that's uncommon in too many schools), queerness is typically submerged with whiteness. We gotta separate LGBTQ identities from whiteness. We can start by acknowledging folks like James Baldwin and Marsha P. Johnson. #educolor
A5: I think the students should take the lead. They're far more comfortable in discussing topics that the adults have been conditioned to avoid in public. We know the latter approach hasn't really worked, so let the students take the lead.
#EduColor
A4 I'm not trying to be a downer but doing this well means seeking out people who have the skills to do so. I don't want a 1st yr teacher coming to me with a half-baked idea. I want to TEACH anti-racism and anti-oppression at school skillfully #educolor
A4 The texts we put in students' hands are so important too. These were the choices my seniors had during the first semester. Students who didn't see themselves as readers in September were engaged and reading these titles #educolor
Q6 Many unions and educational organizations signed on in support of the Week of Action. How do we continue to hold unions and organizations accountable to the work of organizing for Black lives in and out of schools? #EduColor
#Educolor A5 Continually immersing myself in environments that promote the 13 principles, despite my misgivings abt my teachEd, I've been blessed that they recognized my hunger for anti-racism and placed me in places that follow such principles
One of our teachers recognized the overwhelming representation of MLK in student examples of black heroes and took the charge to each about the diverse Black heroes in history and present. #EduColor
Y'all know you have to remind me to answer these questions because I like chatting with y'all...
A5 We have to be willing to put in some real work. We have to be willing to be uncomfortable. We have to check our privileges. #EduColor
I've learned you have to build your own support system. Follow @EduColorMVMT. Ask questions of those around you. Build a network of those committed to doing this work. My support and learning in doing this work has not come from my district. #EduColor
A4: we have to make sure that this work includes both teachers and administration. Diverse roles and perspectives leading the work help us hold ourselves accountable to walking the walk. #EduColor

yes but if they do, at least they have started the convo, and we more experienced Ts can hopefully guide & instruct them into a viable & effective way to present #educolor
A4 I'm not trying to be a downer but doing this well means seeking out people who have the skills to do so. I don't want a 1st yr teacher coming to me with a half-baked idea. I want to TEACH anti-racism and anti-oppression at school skillfully #educolor
Oohh, I like this idea! My husband and I celebrated Kwanzaa for the first time last year and loved practicing the principles. Great idea for the #BlackLivesMatterAtSchool principles #EduColor
Q6 Many unions and educational organizations signed on in support of the Week of Action. How do we continue to hold unions and organizations accountable to the work of organizing for Black lives in and out of schools? #EduColor
Awesome! I have learned this with my own children, especially my 8th grader. When I hear him say, "That class is boring." I know he doesn't see where he belongs. That's our job as educators. All of our students have to know they belong. #EduColor
We need to construct a more organic system. A system where everyone is a stakeholder from the beginning. It's not enough to "rethink schools" we need to rethink education. #EduColor
These are awesome tools to have in a classroom for students of all races. This can be a good way to teach anti-racism to children who may not be exposed to the topic at home. #EduColor
A5 I'm going to ask my school admin why we takin money from loud and wrong all lives matter people. and I'm going to ask in a way that they can't just steamroll or "parking lot" and just wait for a response like #educolor
A5: individual learning and growth never ends ! committed to that and to the relationships formed during the DC Black Lives Matter in Schools planning meetings. #EduColor
Q5 How do we individually and collectively continue the work of organizing for Black lives and upholding the 13 principles of Black Lives Matter in school beyond this week of action? (13 principles: https://t.co/Bjzn41I7sW)
#EduColor
...but what makes you think a 1st-year teacher won't be equipped to do so? I know preservice teachers who are learning and sharing alongside me. #EduColor
#Educolor I was invited to speak abt my student exp, and I stressed the need for increased efforts to include antiracism/anti-oppression practices in TeachEd Program, as well as practicing what they preached when it concerned my off-campus cohort. ....
#Educolor ....Such as recognizing the culture of the off-campus cohort is much more different than the main campus, my cohort felt left out, left behind by the main campus, & it showed when we had a transfer from main campus and there was a LOT of differences...
A6: Think about how many of our education/teachers unions organize with police, who not only terrorize Black and Brown youth DAILY but are also rooted in slave patrols. How can a union say #BlackLivesMatteratSchool and organizing with police? #EduColor
YASS Elise! This is my guiding principle at a predominantly white school. My choices for materials can impact the way a white student views or comes to understand more about racism and people of color #EduColor
A5: Recognize the need for this work EVERY day. Have difficult conversations about current events & racism in schools (in an age appropriate way, of course). I often hear that certain topics are "too scary" -why not think about the kids who are ALREADY scared? #educolor
Q7 Our work as educators is rooted in community. In what ways can we organize in our communities outside of school to intersect with our work in schools? #EduColor
...but what makes you think a 1st-year teacher won't be equipped to do so? I know preservice teachers who are learning and sharing alongside me. #EduColor
Just from what I've seen this year from 1st year Ts. If any of your lessons on slavery or jim crow during black history month involve a foldable...I'm gonna have an attitude #EduColor
A6. Our governor essentially slashed unions down to shreds in 2011. Now the leg. is getting ready to light those shreds on fire. But state affiliated orgs can create networks of teachers to organize and learn from each other across the state. #educolor
A6: Unpopular opinion alert: hope the Janus case allows us to starve them financially and withhold funds until they more firmly grasp the concepts of equity, access and equality #EduColor
A5) The current movement toward activism is both an opportunity and a challenge, as traditionally oppressed voices may continue being drowned out. Find allies in a variety of causes (gun control, #MeToo, etc.) and educate on how race fits in to all of them. #educolor
Q5 How do we individually and collectively continue the work of organizing for Black lives and upholding the 13 principles of Black Lives Matter in school beyond this week of action? (13 principles: https://t.co/Bjzn41I7sW)

#Educolor Speaking of edTPA, can I mention how the huge focus on that is seriously hindering my ability to plan and teach? oh my god.... If there was something else oppressive about TeachEd besides lack of substantial anti-racism emphasis....

I've heard this take as well from others. They believe they need to implode on themselves before they truly realize what it means to be committed to equity and justice. #EduColor
A6: Unpopular opinion alert: hope the Janus case allows us to starve them financially and withhold funds until they more firmly grasp the concepts of equity, access and equality #EduColor
And thank you for the push! Certainly there are exceptions and I'm not talking about them. I brought up 1st year teachers who present half planned and potentially harmful ideas. #EduColor
open up events that include all stakeholders in the community. Partner with community organizations s, invite the community into the school. We hold a Cultural Feast for the community in the spring #educolor
Q7 Our work as educators is rooted in community. In what ways can we organize in our communities outside of school to intersect with our work in schools? #EduColor
If their preservice ed was anything like mine, then they’re coming in w zero discussion of diversity & cultural responsiveness. I’m thankful to the incredibly patient educators who *actually* taught me how to be a teacher. Also thankful many preservice programs improved #educolor
#Educolor I do think this is my strongest point, considering I'm also in predominantly white environment, I can look and think "Man, I'm sick and tired of these... here's some books by PoCs" thank you #WeNeedDiverseBooks

A5. Educators and community members should be educating children on diversity. Too often a child will say or point to someone "different" and you see an adult apologize for it, or hush the child. No more hushing. It makes our students think something's wrong. #EduColor
A7: invite guest speakers into the classroom! Share your activism & organizing from outside of school with your students! I asked my students to help me design a poster for a DAPL protest #educolor
Tonight's chat has been enlightening - as always 😀. I'm super bummed that I have to leave #EduColor early, but it's snowing like crazy tonight, so I need to give myself a little extra time to get to #IgniteDenver.

A5 We need to loudly & publicly pushback when the humanity of our students is questioned or at risk. We also need to openly celebrate moments of brilliance, scholarship and excellence #LatetotheParty#educolor
A6 Unions are not really big here in Texas, but I am curious as to how we hold our school districts accountable to the work of organizing for Black lives in and out of schools ESPECIALLY when most of their students are SOC. Why is this even an issue here?!?!?! #educolor
A7: Although this approach was shut down, I think it could provide the best option for combining how we do school with community-focused learning. #EduColorhttps://t.co/jN8clIx1Z4
#Educolor Oh I had MORE discussions & exp w/ cultural responsiveness coming into my TeachEd Program, and I still felt like I had more by the end of the 2nd semester... The nudge was there, but I wish and asked that they do much better.
For context, it's my last semester
Q8 Now let’s imagine school communities where Black lives matter. What do these look like? What are the policies and practices that guide members? #EduColor
A7. Our Black Student Union and Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month leaders make sure there's a community outreach component to all their events whether it's bringing in donations for community nonprofits or registering folks to vote. #educolor
Q8 Now let’s imagine school communities where Black lives matter. What do these look like? What are the policies and practices that guide members? #EduColor
A7 I do a book club. It's for teachers in my area. The discussion is great and teachers who come have talked to me about the discussions and what they have learned and applied to their practice #educolor
#Educolor I've been going about it since, ohh 2015 or so.... LOL. I keep asking the ppl who invited me to speak my truth whether the initiative keeps going, so, here's hoping.

We do project based learning and our products have a service learning component. Working with community organizations throughout the project is a major part of the process. #EduColor
Q7 Our work as educators is rooted in community. In what ways can we organize in our communities outside of school to intersect with our work in schools? #EduColor
A8 inclusive non white washed communities, TOC in a representative number that reflect the community & school population, and a police force that is respectful but non intrusive in the school #educolor
A7 My community is participating in a Common Read using Some of My Best Friends are Black by Tanner Colby. Considering our minority population is small, should be an interesting discussion. #EduColor
A6. As an ELA teacher, being involved in local literary community is everything. Bringing voices of Black (intersectional too) artists to class gives me strength and creates authentic experiences for Ss. #EduColor
A8: Back to the Crenshaw HS example, allowing teachers, parents, students and community members to combine Common Core/rigorous learning standards with real world (community-specific) problem-solving projects that actually contribute to the school's immediate community. #EduColor
Q8 Now let’s imagine school communities where Black lives matter. What do these look like? What are the policies and practices that guide members? #EduColor
A8 Every student's humanity is sacred. Every student's voice is equally asked for, heard, and considered. Teachers actually understand what culturally responsive instruction is. Restorative justice. Restorative justice. Restorative justice. #educolor
A8: Representation! Both through teachers & administrators of color, and the voices & stories taught in the curriculum. Also social justice education would be a priority, not a side issue, and systems in the school would reflect an anti-bias perspective #educolor
#Educolor A8 Schools as one of many cultural centers of the community, Students of all backgrounds are represented in instruction materials, effective restorative practices, most importantly, comprehensive ethnic studies that validates diversity
#Educolor As a history geek, ethnic studies is a MUST. I love sharing my Filipino culture, love learning about other cultures as well!
Also, validation of LGBTQ+ of Color, safe spaces, stirring discussions abt perspectives, privilege, oppression, encouraging student movements
It'd be great if Martin Luther King Day were used as an opportunity to educate about all of those heroes. And YES on the present heroes, the ones who will be revered by some of those vilifying them now. #educolor
Q6 Many unions and educational organizations signed on in support of the Week of Action. How do we continue to hold unions and organizations accountable to the work of organizing for Black lives in and out of schools? #EduColor

A7 Because I live in a part of the nation with the demographics of Northern Scandinavia, my online community is essential. When I travel I always try to meet up w/ the #Educolor peeps who I've met #onhere
A4: I'm not convinced schools allow for any prolonged focus on anti-oppression. The problem continues to be the nature and structure of school . If we want to focus on anti-oppression we need something different. #Educolor
A8: I as a perspective teacher would stay connected to topic that are hard to talk about or that my students may have different opinions. This would be to make sure i have my own views and are educated about each topic being brought up in my classroom. #EduColor
A8. The school system would value Black literacies and identities. No more tracking. No more stupid dress codes. No more mocking of students' names. No more pathologizing communities and families. #educolor
A5 We need to loudly & publicly pushback when the humanity of our students is questioned or at risk. We also need to openly celebrate moments of brilliance, scholarship and excellence #LatetotheParty#educolor

A5: I think the students should take the lead. They're far more comfortable in discussing topics that the adults have been conditioned to avoid in public. We know the latter approach hasn't really worked, so let the students take the lead.
