A1 Effective communication comes in many forms. Formal mission critical, Informal, Informational. Communication could be for a group, or individual. Each could take the form of 1)E-mail, 2)Face-to-face, 3)Written letter, 4)Phone call, 5)Social media #PrinLeaderChat
A1: I think listening and seeking to understand are so important in communication--but you cannot underestimate the importance of building relationships, making connections, and being proactive! #PrinLeaderChat
A1(con) Effective communication must address sender and receiver: Sender: 1)know your audience 2)have a clear & precise purpose 3)review and edit Receiver feedback:1)ask for needed clarification 2)positive 3)constructive 4)clear 5)end response with thank you #PrinLeaderChat
...and like you said, David, listening to understand instead of listening to prepare your best response! Just listening to the other's point of view and trying to empathize. #PrinLeaderChat

Dropping in from VT to #PrinLeaderChat. A1 - Good communication begins with listening. Communication that is delivered before deeply listening can end up misguided.
A1: Effective communication requires consistency, clarity, transparency, honesty, empathy and most important, listening. Building relationships so that there is a level of understanding and trust sets the tone. #prinleaderchat
A1: All of the answers here are on point. I will add that you must be available, in order to communicate. You must make time for people. #prinleaderchat
A2 - eating lunch with both the teachers and students throughout the week just to check on how things are going or if there is anything I can help with. I also like to communicate with my teachers by leaving positive hand written notes after I do an observation #PrinLeaderChat

A2- Good communication goes both ways and I find it is often most successful through well facilitated discussions in person that have clear purpose. #prinleaderchat
A2: School-wide, email and Weekly newsletter that highlights celebrations/shoutouts, what's new, reminders, detailed weekly calendar, upcoming important dates. Individually, I prefer to go to their room and talk face 2 face rather than ask them to come to me. #prinleaderchat
A2 Best strategy is just walking around and visiting with people (students and staff). Of course, email is essential. And Remind is great for connecting. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Nothing beats face-to-face communication. Stop in to PLCs, classrooms, have convos in the hallway, parking lot, office. Develop those relationships and other forms of communication will be stronger. Emails, Google Sites, Book studies, meetings all matter. #prinleaderchat
A2: I love talking to people! Personal interactions with people are paramount in building relationships, connecting with staff and students, and growing your culture! #PrinLeaderChat

A3 Schools need to have a wide variety of methods to communicate with parents. Not all parents are comfortable with web tools so use oral & written communication + updated school site, Facebook page, @RemindHQ. My PT Communication page https://t.co/gky3tx6w1H#PrinLeaderChat

A3: Weekly school messenger that hits via voice, twitter, email, facebook, text, website. Phone calls versus emails for during the week stuff. #prinleaderchat
A3 - social media has become one of the best ways to push out information the parents and community! Reminds are wonderful also! The best way to communicate is face to face when given the chance #PrinLeaderChat

A3- https://t.co/wmqfXIq5Cv is a great tool to use in large groups where you are working to communicate information and collect immediate feedback from your audience. #prinleaderchat
A3: Social media is such an important way to communicate w/ the community! I use #Twitter, @wakelet, & a blog to post newsletters, communications, & share stories w/ families. Our district also has a FB page & district website. #PrinLeaderChathttps://t.co/S4jfd2uMYH
I don't script but can get a feel for climate and culture of school. main goal is to let kids get to know me and to build a relationship with them. Amazing the positive comments i get from parents
#PrinLeaderChat
The key words right there.... "Go where they are." If they are on social media, at community events, at dismissal, wherever they are, you go there. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Be a part of the community. Let parents/stakeholders see you outside of school. Use Twitter, Instagram, blog, post to websites, send weekly newsletters. Be at drop off. Communicate by modeling what it means to have a culture of excellence in your school. #prinleaderchat
Make sure to schedule time. Start with all new students. ask question about their life outside school and let them ask me anything they want about me. Main goal is to build relationships
#PrinLeaderChat
Thank you for sharing your @wakelet idea! We now put one together every week to communicate the positive events going on in our building! We have had many positive reviews! #prinleaderchat
A3:
1. Know your parents/community.
2. Realize your best friend is your Public Relations Specialist (@EdTechMack).
3. Embrace Social Media, messaging systems,or any other way of communicating.
4. If that doesn’t work, try the Pony Express. #whateverittakes#PrinLeaderChat
I am reading a book called Messaging Matters. I am only halfway through, but I also stopped and viewed some podcasts on the book. I highly recommend. The author is @Williamdp William D. Parker #prinleaderchat
A3 Agree we need to utilize many medium for communicating with parents/community For parents writ a postcard of positive actions by their child. Great PR
#prinleaderchat
A4: Like I said, I am reading this book and working on a short term and long term plan to more effectively communicate through various venues. Check it out. Seriously has this old dog ready to try some new trciks. #prinleaderchat
A4 We are using the paid version of RemindHQ this year, and it's been great to monitor our stats and see communication increasing almost week by week. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: We have worked really hard this year to brand our school. We have built an awesome presence on social media: Twitter, Instagram, & FB. Our staff has been amazing at telling our stories & sharing pictures of the great things happening in our school. #PrinLeaderChat
One strategy I think is essential is to promote all the good things that happen in our buildings daily using all possible platforms and methods... just get the message out there that schools are places where hundreds of positive things happen every single day!!!! #PrinLeaderChat
Don't make assumptions when it comes to communication:
The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place. --George Bernard Shaw
#PrinLeaderChat
A4- Consistency of communication is important. There are so many tools that are valuable but switching them too often or catering to one audience over another can create confusion about communication. #prinleaderchat

I have started using @wakelet to compile a weekly story that I tweet out every Friday night. I take all of our staff's tweets from the week-sharing the awesome things that happen in our school-and put them in one place. It is one of my favorite new tools! #PrinLeaderChat
Q4: Social media is the window into the day in and day out of your building...a window for parents to see the cool stuff happening! A way to focus on the good...because there really is SO much good! #prinleaderchat
