This is the official Twitter account for #OklaEd, thehashtag that brings OK educators together. #OklaEd is not political & promotes constructive dialogue.
Mary Davis, Director of Special Education, Illinois I'm joining different state #edchats to get more responses to my dissertation survey on Sped Tchr Prep.https://t.co/DpD3fp0V3c Please share my link with sped tchrs! #oklaed
I ditto but I would take out the republican part. All of them seem to be claiming they are for us and fall short at different times. I do agree Rep do it more often #oklaed
A2 I'm very worried that our OK EDU cannot survive more cuts and teacher shortages. What will happen to our children? What will become of our state? #OklaEd
A2) Funding, as a “non-core” in a small school that’s always one thing. Trying new things in my classroom doesn’t really scare me cause I’m trying new stuff with my groups all the time to get better. #oklaed
A2: I’m afraid of letting all the noise outside of the classroom (okleg) influencing my decision to keep teaching. I’m afraid of the direction I see local and federal legislation going. I don’t want to let my students down. #oklaed
A2:I wonder what would happen if a large number of #oklaed parents simply opted their children out of all state mandated testing. Of course, I would never support such a thing. Just asking for a friend.
A2: Admitting when I am wrong or unaure. (often on both fronts) I try to confront this fear but it can be hard to admit with staff or when in classroom, with students. #OklaEd
I have had this same thought - or maybe grading in a completely different way - something that truly speaks to what the students have accomplished. #oklaed
A3 - I have started making positive calls home. About a month and a half ago I did a week where I called home daily for positive reasons. I need to be consistent in that practice. #oklaed
This is something I've been thinking about. I want to teach here because I care so much about the students, I just don't know if okleg will make that a possibility, let alone a choice. #oklaed
A3: suck it up buttercup. I mean sometimes I just have to be scared; remind myself fear is a feeling just like all the others...mostly temporary #oklaed
A2&3:I just dropped out of the TeachEd program. I guess I'm afraid that my switch to alternative certification will hold me back, or have people doubting me. @ebarnes73#oklaed
A2) As a new Principal, it scares me to be presented with a situation that I may not know how to handle but requires a quick decision. I study and try to step back before making a decision to keep from making a mistake. #oklaed
#oklaed A2: Voicing my opinions, so here it is. It's time to redesign what education means; the ideas should come from us, the educators, and not people who think they know what is best for our students.
A3: I love this question. One step I like to take this time of year is deciding what next big goal(s) I want to accomplish for the coming calendar yr. And then picking which ones I'll build action steps to accomplish. #oklaed
#oklaed A2: Voicing my opinions, so here it is. It's time to redesign what education means; the ideas should come from us, the educators, and not people who think they know what is best for our students.
A3Fear enhances fear. I want to step up and do what needs to be done for success. If I'm afraid, students will fear. I need to step up to the plate each time any opportunity arises. #oklaed
Not at all. I am alternatively certified. I was named teacher of the year for my building this past monday and 1 of 4 to receive the state’s election for PAMEST. #oklaed
#oklaed A3: So if people just want to play political games with education to push their own political agenda, then we need to take charge. Find ways to raise money for education, build connections, and submit proposals. The time is now!
A4 I am not sure there is one. I know I am incredibly blessed with building and district leadership, but I always feel emboldened to dream big and take risks in my classroom. #oklaed#MDPurpose
A4. Trying to bridge the gap between the #oklaed innovators and the late majority educators of Oklahoma... Hence the Unconference coming in January.
https://t.co/5DVOWwnUEA.
A4: Oh, wow. I've heard it called a BHAG: A Big Hairy Audacious Goal! :-) I'd love to see schools turn the idea of "Genius Hour" into "Genius Schools" #oklaed
A4) I would like to make a better schedule for my school where I can have teachers scheduled to accommodate the students' schedule rather than a schedule that is not the best for our school. #oklaed
#OklaEd A4: When I was teaching (really facilitating learning - about 9 years ago), I wanted to eliminate textbooks but didn’t. Would today in a heartbeat!!!
A4 My “go big” lesson is just shifting to 3D Science learning, although I’ve embraced that so it’s not so scary anymore....although it was at the beginning! #oklaed
A4: Write a book, start a non-profit focused on recognizing the great work of #oklaed teachers, perform more community service "outside of my comfort zone."
a4 What I REALLY want to do is restructure my school in to team/interdisciplinary learning. bc life. BUT that REALLY IS a big deal. I need time and by in. I dont have the first. The second is a question mark....wow thats a long tweet...#oklaed
a4. I'd like to connect my MS with other classrooms, teachers, experts in the field.
World Middle School. Everyone is welcome. Learning 24/7.
Who else is in?!!!
#oklaed
A3 I am always nervous I have to pull ELL students from classrooms where the teacher doesn’t think the students need ELL services. Makes me want to get out of ELL teaching #oklaed
A4 I'm not really afraid to try new things...lack of resources are the struggle. So many things I'd like to try and encouraged others to try with technology, but we're limited. #oklaed
#oklaed A4: I'm thinking about opening my own educational business called Novelties where I design curriculum or things that go in a classroom. I may get it started in the next couple of weeks.
I see this as a risk question. Without taking a risk, we will never reap the reward. The bigger the risk the bigger the failure - the bigger the learning for all involved. Which mean a bigger reward. #oklaed
A5) I may only get one chance to try it. If it works then its great, but if I fail I may lose support from staff, students, parents, or worse lose my position. #oklaed
I'd like to design and implement an extra curricular social studies program on an elementary/middle school level. #goal being to provide a more sociological, diverse, progressive viewpoint than the #oklaed standards.
A5: There are so many books out there. I just am not sure what I have to say or my perspective on things would be anything anyone else would be interested. So I don’t write.#Oklaed
A5 I don't feel like anything holds me back from doing my job. I'm my own worse enemy, and I sometimes wonder how I can get better without failing. I hate failing! I hate letting others down! I have to find my own way of reaching acceptable success. #oklaed
a5. Time and tech. One day, this will happen. I can't wait to one day be able to offer a STEAM class taught by @TeachFromHere.
How awesome would that be?
#oklaed
A4: I really want my social studies classes to function around simulation and role play, but I'm not sure if that would translate well into high test scores and coworker approval #oklaed
A5: the fear of failure often holds me back but taking risks and trying new things is so important to our professional growth and for our students growth #oklaed
#oklaed A5: Having time to work on it because it takes time to design and implement ideas and also advertising what I create, but if I want my students to design and implement ideas, then I have to show them how to do it.
A4). We are going big w tech integration, Maker space and pursuing authentic learning and feedback. I have amazing leadership and I am freaked out a little every day bc it is big!! #oklaed
A5: Time, wanting to devote as much attention to my children & their activities. And time. Did I say time? One more time for good measure: TIME. #OKLAED
A5: It's more a fear of the unknown. I don't think I've personally experienced a class like the one I envision I would teach, and I'm worried I won't be seen as a "good" teacher because I focus so heavily on roleplay and simulation. #oklaed
My go big: complete open enrollment in high school. If I want to take 6 hours of chemistry I can…Or 8 hours of english. Whatever my passion, i can pursue it. #oklaed
I think I am growing as an innovator and would love to be a part of this process. I will plan on being at the Unconference in January and start thinking about a session to lead. #oklaed
A5: What is holding teacher candidates back are these ridiculous certification tests that we have to take to be certified teachers. "Certification" does not equal "qualification!" #oklaed#NSUEngEd
Sharing with two of my favorite #edchat crews before I head to bed. It's been called "the only good idea I've had since becoming a Principal".
Feel free to print this and drop it in your Principal's mailbox tomorrow :)
Have a fantastic week everyone!
#iaedchat#oklaed
A5 comment for A4: I think you should try yourself, see what the hardest parts are, share with your colleagues, and I'm pretty sure it will catch with some of them. Give it a try, you never know! #oklaed
My primary goal is to teach these "progressive" viewpoints while still somehow satisfying the standards. I've found that perspective analysis is the easiest in-road in the class I've taught lessons in. #oklaed
A6: I love this question/step @ebarnes ! I commented on @edgeblogger and @Biobellrocks -- Write those books and share those amazing insights with the rest of the world. :-) #oklaed
A6) we build in collaboration time. 90 minutes on Friday. We early release kids and teachers meet to discuss data, individual growth, plan as a team and get additional professional development as needed. Someone posted they wanted more collaboration time. #oklaed
Kindergarten at @Arthurokcps 1-to-1 with iPad. I kind of had the same doubt, and little by little have been trying out new things, making changes, and it looks like it is not going bad. Lead your colleagues at your school, I'm sure there's a lot of things you can try #oklaed
The special services director in my district. Great mind for legal issues, and keeps his thumb on the educational news, so that I can focus on students. #oklaed#justtellmewhatineedtoknow
A7: The guy in the mirror. Whenever I am apprehensive or anxious about an idea, I just have to engage in some positive self-talk. Usually guides me the right way. #oklaed
A7: my former principal Mr. Lee Roland. He has so much wisdom and experience. He encourages risks and trying new things -- always gives great advice on how to #oklaed
A7 - I have 2. My dad, he has been in education for 44 years now, as a teacher, coach, principal, & superintendent. I go to him for advice a lot. Also my wife (@TheMrsGragg) she was an excellent English T, & now an instructional coach. They both help me a ton! #oklaed
My go-to person is @manders416. She doesn't let me get away with thinking I can't, and she is totally willing to kick my butt until I change my attitude. #oklaed
A7) My main go-to person is @gtfrederick1 because he was the Principal I worked under as an Assistant Principal and he takes the time to explain whatever I need to know. #oklaed
A7 For educational purposes, I go to my principals. My previous principal believed in my ideas and strategies. My now principal believes in my abilities as an effective teacher. I use both of these men to enhance and develop my teaching skills. #oklaed
A7: @kristybrugar has been instrumental in helping me work through my fears in education. She's been instrumental in helping me formulate my own identity within the educational environment. #oklaed
A7: @BlossJulie She may be across the state (thank goodness for @voxer & the twitters) buuut she listens, she's also an elementary principal, she's innovative and thinks outside the box, AND she's got a heart for kids. #OKLAED
@edgeblogger@Biobellrocks If either of you (or others) would like to brainstorm on book ideas, feel free to reach out via email williamdp@gmail.com #oklaed
#OklaEd A7: I’m not in a classroom and thus don’t have fears per se. so I’m so fortunate to be able to Consider various social media sources, reaching out to the supplier as well as others in my PLN ...
#oklaed is my go to person. When I flipped class. you were there. When I gamified class. You were there. When I went crazy and dove into grad school. You were there…#Oklaed
A7: @kristybrugar has been instrumental in helping me overcome my fears in education. She's always available to talk and honestly gives the best advice. She's been central to helping me develop my teaching identity. #oklaed
A7: Tough question, I would say our entire Leadership Team in Mid-Del. They have the best interest of our students at heart and are more than willing to help when neeeded. #Oklaed
A8: if you have a relationship with every student you know when one is stepping out of their comfort zone. Just like when I saw the hand up to read aloud from 1 that never did b4. I knew. This was his moment. I let him shine. #oklaed
A8 Depends on the Ss...some of the Ss who appear most confident are struggling with fear. Build relationships and don't assume you know their story! #oklaed
A8) Now it is harder for me to recognize students facing their fears because I do not see them on a regular basis. Mostly, they will come to me and discuss their fears with me. #oklaed
#Oklaed Dr. Lara Searcy is my go-to person for everything. She always ends up being right about everything. I've given up trying to prove her wrong. She is a jedi; she's definitely inspiring. Thankful!
A8 - I hope it is easy for me. I want to be a T my Ss can trust and I strive to make my room a safe space for students to take risks, learn how to civically engage, & form and share opinions. #oklaed
A8: It can be very hard. That's why building relationships with your students is so important. They have to trust you to admit that they fear something. #Oklaed
a8 most of my Ss r cmpletly risk adverse. They arent willing to try anything & thinking wo the T is out of the question Thats the most frustrating part of Ting for me. #OklaEd
A8: It depends on the student. Some of them are pretty good at hiding what they're really thinking. That's why allowing time/space for reflection is important #oklaed
A9 Sometimes standing/sitting at their side and going through "it" with them helps. Sometimes, I just keep encouraging them. Sometimes, it's about figuring out what is holding them back and solving that problem. #oklaed
A9) Listen, listen, listen. Not to respond but to understand. That's why the Great Spirit created us with two ears and one mouth. But it's so hard for me to just shut up and hear their story. #oklaed
A9: you Model being brave. You teach a growth mindset. You let it happen on their time. You invest in the relationship w/ that student so there is a level of comfort and safety felt. #oklaed
A9 When a student is afraid for social or educational purposes, I help them find any type of success that will stop that scared-sting. I give them a reason to trust me. #oklaed
#oklaed A8: Some of my seniors have a fear of speaking in front of people. They don't want to talk, and they don't want me to call on them to answer a question.
A9a - I get to know my students out of the classroom first - at activities, in the hallway, at lunch. That way they know my heart and that I care. I let them know my room is always open. #oklaed
#oklaed A9: Depends on the S. I'm SpEd. Sometimes it is the fear that must be moved to accommodate the S. But most of the time I try to encourage the self-concept of the S. Help them remember "You are smart and you are strong and you can do this."
But the time you are spending with kiddos is making a difference. One of the boys you work with at KG was telling me about getting to hang out with you. Positive Role Models and Relationships...So Important! #OklaEd
A9) I actively listen to the student, let them talk freely, protect their confidence when not legally required to notify others, stay honest with them and follow-up with them until they feel safe. #oklaed
A9a - I get to know my students out of the classroom first - at activities, in the hallway, at lunch. That way they know my heart and that I care. I let them know my room is always open. #oklaed
MaryJane Burton at Choctaw HS is my go-to she’s in the same position as me and was my mentor teacher during Student Teaching. She’s a constant source of guidance and support! #Oklaed
A9b - Last spring we lost a S to depression. It was close to the end of school. Content & skills became secondary to their needs. I broke my personal rules about hugs and let students cry on my shoulders. They needed someone to care. #oklaed
Thank you for allowing me to join you all tonight! #oklaed is almost over---Afterwards, pls take my survey or share with your sped. tchrs-it's on Special Ed Teacher Prep! Only takes about 10 minutes TIA! https://t.co/DpD3fp0V3c
#oklaed A9: We take baby steps, The seniors who didn't like to present in front of their peers gave their presentations in front of me and a few other people.
A7: My school's district media specialist/college pal/best friend. She is brilliant and supportive; She pushes me to achieve when I'm afraid I'll fail and helps when I don't know where to begin. I wouldn't be a T without her. #oklaed
Q9: By developing relationships first. Trust is a major factor in helping our kids be their best. I have a morning chat and lunch chat group that anyone is welcome to, kids come in and are able to release their stress in a safe and controlled environment. #OklaEd
