    A1) I haven't used brackets in my courses - yet. :) #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Mar 15 @ 9:09 PM EDT
I used brackets for most important person of the renaissance as part of our renaissance survivor. Also most important president. I think @STLinOK is the one who shared Cold War events. #sstlap
  • N_Davidson18 Mar 15 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A1: I'm tempted for when we do our look at dictators; we look at who was 'best' at employing techinques of dicatorships; could do it bracket style #sstlap
  • ToddShriver Mar 15 @ 9:10 PM EDT
#sstlap A1 My colleague, @1988project, does his presidential madness bracket. The Presidents following the Civil War are seeded, Ss are assigned a President to debate/support.
  • Braz74 - Moderator Mar 15 @ 9:10 PM EDT
There is always time- I had ss debate each other and class vote as to who moved to next round. They did opening statements, asked each other questions - was amazing to see who shined in this type of activity. #sstlap
    In reply to @CHitch94
  • STLinOK Mar 15 @ 9:11 PM EDT
It was “Torture Tuesday” for Medieval Torture Devices (#1 was always Hanged, Drawn, & Quartered & the Spanish Donkey was usually not far behind on the list). #sstlap

A2: The first thing that comes to my mind - Presidents. Ss could research various presidents and their accomplishments #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Mar 15 @ 9:16 PM EDT
I like the focus- we talked about leaders and what makes a good one - included Hitler because of what he was able to get people to do.. spent a lot of time disavowing what he did but how leaders get followers to do things is powerful activity #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Mar 15 @ 9:16 PM EDT

I usually take Hitler out because he's far too easy and it makes Ss think of other figures, but point taken; it's the WHY that matters not always the WHAT; I do a straight competition with presentations, but no bracket; Ss vote on best overall #sstlap
    In reply to @Braz74
  • STLinOK Mar 15 @ 9:18 PM EDT
“Most “x” in History!” Could be influential, evil, overrated. Anything you can add a value statement to: people, inventions, events, periods of time. #sstlap

@dchristiansenba does “Hero/Hack” with her Gov kiddos - pretty cool as it requires the evidence. Not 100% sure, but she may end the year with a bracket for each #sstlap

I didn't do a bracket for this but had students individually rank these then we discussed, but think this could be a great lesson - do eras and best of each era face off end of semester - #sstlap

  • CHitch94 Mar 15 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A4) Could rank the most important skills needed for studying history. They might be able to use it for reviewing a unit (most important people, information, connections, etc.). #sstlap

yes- letting them pick topic so they are working from area of interest or passion- love the newscast/selection show idea-- that would be epic #sstlap

yes good point- the influence of one on the other, but then the argument has to be the documents ability to stand on its own or you go back to the very first democratic document as the automatic winner - so great to see their analysis - powerful stuff #sstlap
    • mrrogers311 Mar 15 @ 9:38 PM EDT
Also, because its based on influence it also requires some level of synthesis to other docs and topics too. Can you have the Declaration of Independence w/o Common Sense?

When I did it in 3 teams, they couldn't simply vote for their own team- always had to justify the vote and this lead to more honesty-- and with 3 teams 1 winner, there had to be some cross over between teams. #sstlap
