Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS (IUHS). Won't be able to stay for entire chat but hoping to keep an eye on both #sstlap and #INeLearn.
I used brackets for most important person of the renaissance as part of our renaissance survivor. Also most important president.
I think @STLinOK is the one who shared Cold War events.
#sstlap
A1: I'm tempted for when we do our look at dictators; we look at who was 'best' at employing techinques of dicatorships; could do it bracket style #sstlap
#sstlap A1 My colleague, @1988project, does his presidential madness bracket. The Presidents following the Civil War are seeded, Ss are assigned a President to debate/support.
There is always time- I had ss debate each other and class vote as to who moved to next round.
They did opening statements, asked each other questions - was amazing to see who shined in this type of activity.
#sstlap
It was “Torture Tuesday” for Medieval Torture Devices (#1 was always Hanged, Drawn, & Quartered & the Spanish Donkey was usually not far behind on the list). #sstlap
I like the focus- we talked about leaders and what makes a good one - included Hitler because of what he was able to get people to do.. spent a lot of time disavowing what he did but how leaders get followers to do things is powerful activity #sstlap

A2: Most influential leader (PM for us Canadians); Greatest Canadian in terms of who should be on a dollar bill; Cold War event; most significant figure in any historical era #sstlap
A2 How about technological innovations in human history, beginning with the domestication of fire, the creation of agriculture, of writing, art, etc. #sstlap
There are a lot of days I am a spectator taking in ideas and others where I have a few ideas- in both cases the group is better from the conversation- thanks for joining and jump in where you can #sstlap
I usually take Hitler out because he's far too easy and it makes Ss think of other figures, but point taken; it's the WHY that matters not always the WHAT; I do a straight competition with presentations, but no bracket; Ss vote on best overall #sstlap
“Most “x” in History!” Could be influential, evil, overrated. Anything you can add a value statement to: people, inventions, events, periods of time. #sstlap

Nice with the form I created you could project on the screen, and update with copy and paste pretty easy..
my penmanship is so bad I had to create a better visual
love the topic- #sstlap
A2 - Innovations
decades- most influential
influential women
Laws or court rulings
so many things that students could use to debate and discuss #sstlap
A3) I think something like most influential rabblerouser or similar would be interesting. Most significant trade item in history could be intriguing. #sstlap
@dchristiansenba does “Hero/Hack” with her Gov kiddos - pretty cool as it requires the evidence. Not 100% sure, but she may end the year with a bracket for each #sstlap

1st time here. Great topic, so I had to jump in.
A3: In World and US History I have used most influential document of all time. In Gov, most influential Supreme Court Case of all time. Interesting to see the arguments and evidence Ss use.

I didn't do a bracket for this but had students individually rank these then we discussed, but think this could be a great lesson - do eras and best of each era face off end of semester -
#sstlap
A2 How about technological innovations in human history, beginning with the domestication of fire, the creation of agriculture, of writing, art, etc. #sstlap
A4: I allowed my Ss to create the pairings for our bracket and I was really impressed by the thinking and remembering of topics that went into it - I never thought of letting them choose an overall topic - great idea. #sstlap
A4) Could rank the most important skills needed for studying history. They might be able to use it for reviewing a unit (most important people, information, connections, etc.). #sstlap
A4 Students might want to look at worst leader, laws that deny them rights/freedoms, yes I am thinking negative, but also things that impact them. What decisions by adults had the greatest negative impact on students/kids?
#sstlap
A4 #sstlap Ss create bracket would be awesome, especially if they follow the competition with their own analysis, supported with evidence - could be a great choice assessment - Ss could do a selection show, then updates with newscasts ... ooooh just got some mojo ...
A4: You could really incorporate a bracket system as assessment for anything. If you give them the power to create it, then the possibilities are only limited by THEIR imagination and creativity level!

We set up teams- 3 per class students did a presentation- poster etc for overview intro - -
debate- 1 min to persuade why their person best - then got to ask each opponent up to 3 questions. then 1 minute closing argument -
whole thing 6 min limit #sstlap
yes good point- the influence of one on the other, but then the argument has to be the documents ability to stand on its own or you go back to the very first democratic document as the automatic winner - so great to see their analysis - powerful stuff #sstlap
Also, because its based on influence it also requires some level of synthesis to other docs and topics too. Can you have the Declaration of Independence w/o Common Sense?
A5: No matter the bracket I use (yup I change the topics up all the time), I create a @MicrosoftEDU form and let the students rank before we begin. They vote on the winner of each match on a MS Form too.
US History T Yoda = Teach democracy we must!
#sstlap
yes- we had them vote based on the debate performance- had one student who did amazing job representing a president I didn't think had a chance. She destroyed her opponents in debate through her research and preparation #sstlap
A5: When I have competitions, the Ss vote; they discuss criteria and give feedback at times; I find that helps reduce voting based on popularity #sstlap
A2: When I taught middle school and we had a week after exams to "kill." I designed a Heroes vs. Villains Tournament to get one last memorable learning experience. To this day is one of my favorite activities. #sstlap

love the topic. I want to set this up and debate with people right now!!!
the fate of the world depends on who wins the final battle between Heroes and Villans.

When I did it in 3 teams, they couldn't simply vote for their own team- always had to justify the vote and this lead to more honesty-- and with 3 teams 1 winner, there had to be some cross over between teams. #sstlap
I'd love to take credit for how awesome it was, but that was all the students. They could've checked out (grades were already finalized and that was an open secret). They made it awesome and got really connected with their person. #sstlap
A6 #geniushour was huge to build relationships
Power of ICU pushed me to leap into better assessment practices
PBL is something I am still working on but doing projects over MC assessments was huge
and TLAP is powerful push to strive for greatness #sstlap
there are so many times when we drop the grades and focus on learning opportunities that students shine. I did a bunch of things for no grade and kids were amazing. then did a grading task and didn't sell it, they didn't buy it and was horrible- #sstlap

A6: Final Four best practices...
1. DDM
2. Flipped Classroom
3. Inquiry Based
4. Simulations
Simulation based learning hands down is my winner. My Sims are always the learning opportunities that are most impactful and the ones they remember the most.

Before everyone takes off- there will not be #sstlap next week unless someone wants to guest host, but I am taking the week off for Spring break
Thanks for another great chat.
Sorry I was in and out tonight...trying (and failing) to multi-task. Thanks for sharing ideas and inspiration. I think I just might build that bracket this spring! Have a great spring break! #sstlap
