#2ndchat is a Twitter hashtag that can be used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other second grade educators from around the world. Every other week we will discuss a different topic. It's a great way to help grow your PLN (Professional/Personal Learning Network) and share ideas with others.
Before we get started- do any of you have too many ideas running around in your head at one time???? I feel like I have 12 plates spinning at once! #2ndchat
I feel most of my ideas are great in my head but dont get traction because never find that running buddy to get excited with me... i get the pat on the head.. you do you Shawn #2ndchat
A1: When I think back at my childhood experience.. I had some memorable teachers and some not so much. Those that were memorable made learning exciting and had a passion for class. #2ndchat
I loved my science teachers in high school because they were professionals before teachers so they had field experience which was cool. #2ndchat challenging but rewarding
I feel like I was always supported in school by my teachers. They seemed genuinely concerned about me and my learning. As time went on and I got older, I felt like I had less and less, unfortunately. I attributed it to teachers having so much on their plate... #2ndchat
A1: One negative experience I'll always remember is my 3rd year (English school) teacher ripping my story to shreds on which I'd worked so hard. Didn't even read it. Said it was "messy, do it again." - multiple pages! #2ndchat
A1cont: In elementary I wasnt challenged but flourished on my own. Smart kiddo who could make it. I wish I was pressed more into the growth mindset areas which I think I lacked. #2ndchat
A1: My academic childhood experiences were very good. I had good teachers who made me want to engage. I struggled with school at times and my teachers would be patient with me. #2ndchat
A1: My academic experience was very fun and was composed of an engaging learning environment. A lot of technology was used in the classroom. I also had a lot of busy work every night. #2ndchat
I also had a science teacher who started challenging me in the sciences because I was destroying MS sciences. She gave me high school workbooks but loved the effort. Her class was the best. #2ndchat
Pretty much all my teachers in high school did not show the effort to provide extra help to students who needed it and were not flexible with different teaching styles, which I think is important to embrace #2ndchat
A2: I think when I first started teaching MANY years ago, I just copied how I was taught & what I saw around me. Felt like it could be better though . #2ndchat
A2: The experiences I had as a child helped me a lot for my education in high school and college because I learned necessary academic skills as well as organization skills. I also learned a lot about my study habits as a child which helped me for the future. #2ndchat
A2: It was the teachers that were super passionate about their subject is who I model after when I teach. Mr Bastin for his #TLAP attitude before it was vogue.. Ms. Hammond who brought science in the lab that was handson. Ms. Christensen who had the heart for all SS #2ndchat
A2: The experiences I had helped me today because I learned it takes me longer to understand things than others so now I study harder. I also learned organization skills and the basics, which helped me in high school and college. #2ndchat
Q2: the experiences I had in school are the reasons I want to become a teacher one day. I learned "what no to do's" from observing my teachers and I want to give kids a better chance than I had #2ndchat
A2 I don't want my Ss sitting and listening to me all day, I want them exploring and learning, I want them to remember their 2nd grade teacher as the one that got them excited about coming to school. #2ndchat
A2: In today's test-driven, grade-driven world, I would have been considered "gifted" or "magnet". When really all I was was a great test-taker, had a good memory, and a model student. I didn't LEARN much! #2ndchat
A4: We are on the right track for preparing students for the world of "tomorrow" because classes are based on technology and currently many classrooms are incorporating technology into their lesson plans. #2ndchat
Last year, my class started holding on to the tables and chairs saying they were not going to leave! I finally had to promise a "stay after school day." We had a blast! #2ndchat
A5: Some trends that are coming our way soon is the use of technology and online lessons and games in the classroom. Some trends online are BrainPOP and databases such as PBSkids. #2ndchat
A2: #2ndchat I also see that I want my students to enjoy learning so that they want to continue to learn. To get there, they must be engaged and learning while having fun. #conversechat@JuliePJones
A3: I think education today is in a strange place. People have 1 foot in the past & 1 foot knowing there are more innovative ways to learn/teach. #2ndchat
I think there is a lot of inequality throughout the school system in terms of resources and grade level preparation. Many students are being left behind and are not receiving the quality education they deserve #2ndchat
A6: In twenty or thirty years I think school's will be based on technology. Everything will be done on a computer or tablet through online lessons and interactive games. #2ndchat
A5: Some trends that are coming our way are online lessons, and technology based classrooms. A good website that will become more popular is nearpod. #2ndchat
A2: I think my past experiences in school have helped me as an educator. I remember all the teachers I didn't want to be like and the ones I wanted to emulate. I think it also helped me to better empathize with my struggling readers in helping find a book they like. #2ndchat
A3: I think education today is in a strange place. People have 1 foot in the past & 1 foot knowing there are more innovative ways to learn/teach. #2ndchat
I also think a lot of teachers and school systems are in denial of the fact that the world is changing and they need to change with it, in terms of instruction and resources #2ndchat
A3: It seems that the current state of ed is trying to navigate between test prep and making lessons that have benefits for the long term, not just end of the year assessment. #2ndchat
I agree with you! my learning experience was very similar! I had a very positive learning experience full of community and laughter! I hope one day my classroom will be the same! #2ndchat
I think there is a shift of the types of assessments that are being focused on, for example, formative vs. summative. I have seen the wonders of giving formative along with summative assessments and they are so helpful to inform instruction! #2ndchat
A3: #2ndchat We have come a long way. Embracing technology in the classroom has opened so many possibilities. I do worry that the younger grades are not coloring and cutting enough. Their dexterity and creativity is suffering. #conversechat@JuliePJones
A3: I believe we are on a precipe of some real changes to the edu system.. like Carol said we are dragging and pulling old teachers kicking and screaming but its ok. innovate adapt and move on! #2ndchat
I have third graders old kiddos who still treat me like a rock star.. throwing accolades and fighting to get into my after school classes. lol #2ndchat
I had the same struggles as you and it was definitely hard at times to keep up with the class. Overall, I also had a very positive academic experience as a child. #2ndchat
A4: I think we are SO much closer than we were! Seeing other teachers/classroom on Twitter is encouraging! I love seeing what others are doing to move kids to the right direction. #2ndchat
A: #2ndchat Google Expedition, maps and virtual reality field trips allow for possobilities that we never had. Exploring is limitless and the visuals connect meaning- places these students would never be able to go. #conversechat@JuliePJones
A4: Honestly even us innovators arent really in the know.. https://t.co/8qv2YILUxF that is being predicted will be so distrubted as it is now.. 4C is really only the timeless principles you can teach #2ndchat Everything else will change
A4: I think we are really trying hard to move in that direction. I think there is a great emphasis on problem solving, collaboration, creativity, and communication which are necessary work skills! #2ndchat
I'm in a rural area but in my province (state), Saskatchewan, the funding for each student is the same. I think other provinces have similar funding to our too #2ndchat
A4: #2ndchat Technology will always be changing. If we are producing students that think, create and strive to learn more, then yes, I think that we are on the right track. They need to know how to learn and apply it to continue striving. @conversechat@JuliePJones
I know we have differences in funding. Some areas here take in more property taxes than others, so they are able to fund more projects, teaching staff, etc than other districts. #2ndchat

A3: I feel like we are still moving in both directions. We live in a world of tech, personalization, SAMR, etc....yet we still keep making decisions about children based on standardized tests and "grades". #2ndchat
A5: Artificial intelligence (echo, Home, Alexa) and computer systems for personalized learning..Mixed Reality (AR/VR). Moving away from traditional classroom subjects.. even the personal computer will go away. #2ndchat
A5: I hope it is more student driven especially in the primary grades. I feel like the change is happening the slowest in primary. They can do it! #2ndchat
A5: Thats why we need to embrace technology in some fashion so they understand change.. static classrooms make it so hard to be flexible later on. My kiddos are always learning some thing new #2ndchat

A5: Skills and knowledge eventually will be able to uploaded ie: matrix into peoples brains.. where does that put educators.. "How to think not what?" #2ndchat
I think VR is going to be a very impactful tool for engaging students in content. I have a small set of Google Expeditions that my kids are fully engaged in using versus passively watching a movie or reading about the same topic. #2ndchat
A5: If we're talking trends that are going to impact the future of education, we need to look beyond just tech. Aging population, diversity, rise in anxiety/mental health issues...all going to impact what we do. #2ndchat
A6: Thinking about school 20 or 30 years from now reminds me of a quote from Back to the Future: "Roads? Where we are going we don't need roads!" I think the future is open to just about anything!!!! I definitely think we'll have less books and more technology! #2ndchat
A6: I would love to see educators treated as the professionals we are to teach the way we know is best. Education is the one field that it seems "okay" to do what we did 50 years ago! #2ndchat
Hi #2ndchat I am an elementary education major at the University of Oklahoma❤️ I am wanting to teach 2nd grade when I graduate🎓 so any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated👍🏻
THIS! One day, hopefully teachers will be treated like professionals, and allowed more freedom and responsibility to do what they know is best to do for each student. #2ndchat
A6: I want the reality to match up better with the ideals. Personalize, differentiate, student-choice, engaged learners, student-driven curriculum.....yet, do it at this time, with these resources, in this box. #2ndchat
HI! The BIGGEST tip/advice I could give you is to follow the #2ndchat hashtag & get connected to other 2nd grade (& other grade levels/roles) on Twitter. They inspire me everyday and share ideas!
#2ndchat Oh my goodness Yes! I would love to see the respect come back- we seem to be losing that. It is certainly not why I made a mid-life career change to teaching.
