Welcome to all who will be joining for the next hour as we discuss - BYOD/Bring Your Own Device.
Hello! Do you know what time it it? Time to with
Hi Jenn. Yes indeed it is time to
Hello, Paula! how was your Monday?
How was your Monday? One more week until our state testing week.
we tried doing our math on our desk at the beginning of the year, it stained desktops bc we have old ones
We start this week…was a lovely 82 degrees today and our school air conditioning broke!
Calling all our tweeps. It’s time to . Join us.
Oh no! Hope it is fixed soon. You had warmer temps then we did today. Mid 70’s here in New Orleans.
Made it 4 no more after school tutoring 4 me! 2day ss made homes & named silk worms, charted their growth https://t.co/xPbzZDvDGy
Well it was worth trying.
Q1: is your school/district ? If not, is it considering it? Why or why not?
A1: Our school is not BYOD and neither is our district, but I have done some BYOD days with my Ss.
Our next BYOD day is next Friday - after state testing.
Oh, goodness. What a mess. I am afraid the teacher shortage is going to get worse.
A1: Same as - nothing set by the district, but we get parents permission for my class and have special days.
A1: I have used BYOD as incentive for my Ss who do well on their iReady lessons.
A1: no district is not but a few of us do it every few weeks for specific apps and activities works great
The kids really enjoy it. It funny how they like doing the same work on their own devices!
A1: Believe the reason why our district is not BYOD is infrastructure. Need to update wifi and have dedicated student wifi.
A1: When my Ss brings devices, I set each device up on our wifi. I don’t share the code with them.
Our tech team has just done an amazing job of updating the infrastructure to accommodate all of the devices! We are lucky!
just trying to support needs of state test for my district was a struggle with tech needs and wifi and ish
Q2: What are the benefits of going ?
Yes, its amazing what they’ll do to make sure we can give the “blessed” test.
me too, It's a pain but most parents bring in device before school starts so it's not too time consuming
A1: When a school/classroom does not have 1:1, it is a great way to get everyone on board at the same time.
A2: The advantages are Ss like working on their own devices. More Ss can participate in things like , blogging, etc.
A2: Another advantage is being able to differentiate lessons more easily be sending things to individual Ss on
A2: engagement, investment, wide range of entry points of content to reach all students
I agree- so easy to get kids going quickly!
Q3: What are some of the challenges of going ?
A3: Making sure each Ss is doing what they are supposed to be doing on their device. Management!
A3: the tech side making sure devices connect, "safety" or damage to device, those who don't have one
A3: Being able to troubleshoot tech issues on all of the various devices. Some I’m not familiar with. But good learning for all.
A3: Keeping kids on the RIGHT task sometimes. I sometimes worry about pictures that may come in on the device!
Mine like to play their music as they work and I worry but if lyrics are appropriate.
A3: Making sure I’ve establish rules and producers for proper usage during BYOD.
That’s why I ask parent permission for a SPECIFIC device. i.e. “I know my child, ___, will bring in the (iPad, iPod,etc)
Oops - procedures not producers.
Q4: What policies should be in place before your school/district goes ?
A4: how to handle, how to access, when and what apps or websites are allowed, no sharing of personal vids or pics
A4: Adequate bandwidth, clearly defined policy, communication with Ps, an updated AUP are some things needed B4 starting BYOD.
A4: I encourage/require true digital citizenship- and keep a very close eye. I use what I have learned from my awesome PLN!
A4: liability for device, how or where to store it, what kind of devices, how Ts use it not just a babysitter screen
A4: Clearly defined learning objectives involving the devices.
Yes! Blending SLO with digital tools makes for great learning! https://t.co/I7aG1QEvAx
