A2 Some think higher order thinking skills don’t apply to PreK and K - but even young children need opportunities to examine and analyze new information - and we have to help teachers make sure that happens with ELLs/DLLs #ELLCHAT

A2) Comprehensible input for English beginners and keeping language objectives in focus once engaged in higher order thinking tasks are two of my biggest challenges. #ELLCHAT
A2: I would say students' confidence! For the most part, our ELLs don't believe they can rise to higher expectations...WE MUST demonstrate how much we believe in them and KNOW they CAN!
#ELLchat
A2 Students that have experience in school learning in their home countries have at least some idea about the kinds of thinking needed, but young children don’t have that experience, and tchrs have to find a way to nurture that thinking when they don’t speak English yet #ELLCHAT
A2 so the challenge with younger children is first to help them understand what is higher order thinking - that they do have opinions and observations and discoveries - then how to share them! #ELLCHAT
A2) I agree! I wrote a lesson based on the children's book Pa Lia's first Day many years ago to demonstrate levels of Blooms. https://t.co/xCpObEaCIT#ELLCHAT
It is a very thin line...I am so glad you maintain consciousness about this difference! It's important to make sure content is NEVER "simplified" just because of language proficiency #ellchat
A2 Yes! Some #earlyed tchrs ask me for busywork apps to keep DLLs/ELLs “occupied” while they teach the other kids. As if a repetitive basic counting app with cute pictures takes the place of counting out the number of blocks you need to make a tower bigger than yourself! #ELLCHAT
A2 One thing is for sure: When the teacher is talking at young children, they are not free to evaluate, experiment, or explore new information/materials! #ELLCHAT

These are my favorite sentence starters to use for accountable talk. I don’t know who made them. They are so nice and visual for all kids (esp #ELs). #ellchat#katyool#ESL#Bilingual#ELL#ENL#EFL
A2) As a co-teacher, the challenge is providing the time and structures necessary in the Biology classroom for ELLs to show their higher-order thinking skills. Ss have the capacity, but it may take longer. Moving on before they are finished could impact their confidence.#ellchat
A2: Another challenge can be wording of questions at various levels. Hard to come up with quality questions on the fly. I have to plan in advance. #ELLChat

A2 I like to have Ss discuss historical pictures related to the unit of study in SS. Students discuss perspectives based on what is happening in picture. Best discussions #ELLchat
A3) When reading, open ended questions where Ss have to construct an answer based on some sort of evidence. Any answer with strong evidence can be correct #ellchat
A3: Sequencing events, sorting & labeling key terms, compare/contrast activities work well even for students at emerging English proficiency level. #ELLChat
A3 I think this question can best be answered for PreK by suggesting engaging materials. So often, the quality of materials supports higher level exploration rather than planned activities. #ELLCHAT
That is my challenge, my best planned questions might be hard. So we just keep rewording. Keep writing notes on lesson plans for the next time.#ellchat
A3: An activity I find to be very effective in challenging my students in high order thinking is creating/publishing books using @writereaderapp. My students know they have to THINK and BE authors so they're are challenged beyond their abilities! #ellchat
As this school year is wrapping up, we’re already looking to next year. Science kits for kindergarten classes were being assembled today at the District Office. #AmesCSD
A2: I find that some higher level thinking requires a lot more prep work in vocabulary and language scaffolding. It's tough to find the balance to provide students with just enough to be successful on their own. #ellchat
A3: #ELLCHAT I do a lot of conferring with my students. We talk and discuss. Usually for EL oral language is mastered first so this interactions has them thinking HOTS while allowing the opportunity to model academic conversations and language.
A3 Examples of materials that support teaching HOTS - items with intrinsic meaning - like sorting the shapes of blocks that will not make your tower fall down. Here are some ideas https://t.co/R5lZu6oRYs#ELLCHAT
A3 Opinions related to a topic Ss stand on different parts of the room and explain their opinion. We need to expose Ss to current events or topics that they can debate #ELLchat
A3: My mind went to math. I would challenge my students to use their resources / strategies to solve open ended problems, but also explain their reasoning through whatever medium their comfortable in (pictures, home language, etc). #ellchat
A3 You know those plastic “bears” we see in every #earlyed classroom? That’s an example of material that shuts down actual higher order thinking - no value at all!! Here’s why: https://t.co/cnkV9Q5dFZ#ELLCHAT
A3) I think these types of activities are good for all ages. For older Ss you can add more difficult tasks or add a writing piece to challenge their thinking. #ELLChat

A3) I like to use project-based learning, so that students are engaged in problem-solving and/or inquiry-based research. I also love using video/animation so students can share knowledge at their language levels. #ELLChat
A3 and really, isn’t that part of higher order thinking to be able to evaluate your questions and give you feedback about why they’re too hard and what might be helpful? #ELLCHAT
That is my challenge, my best planned questions might be hard. So we just keep rewording. Keep writing notes on lesson plans for the next time.#ellchat
A3) Has anyone used deBono's Thinking Hats before? I used it as Spanish teacher, but not consistently. I would like to give it a try again, providing sentence frames. Ss can practice 1 hat at a time, modeling for each other and practicing the different HOTS. #ellchat
A3) Other HOTS activities include
teaching vocabulary needed to express thinking, model your thinking to Ss, teach Ss to infer and problem solving strategies. #ELLCHAT
A3: #ELLCHAT I do a lot of conferring with my students. We talk and discuss. Usually for EL oral language is mastered first so this interactions has them thinking HOTS while allowing the opportunity to model academic conversations and language.
This is great too! I think sentence frames can help students express thinking with HOTS if they are used so students have choice to see which one can be the best choice for their answer. #ellchat
A3) Other HOTS activities include
teaching vocabulary needed to express thinking, model your thinking to Ss, teach Ss to infer and problem solving strategies. #ELLCHAT
A3 Yes and with young children, this can start with practical problem solving. We spilled some juice. Should we get a broom or a rag to clean it up. It’s cold outside but we want to go outside - what can we do to stay warm? #ELLCHAT
A3) Other HOTS activities include
teaching vocabulary needed to express thinking, model your thinking to Ss, teach Ss to infer and problem solving strategies. #ELLCHAT
A4) If we want HOTS in our lessons, we have to plan well! You also have to be willing to hear things you might not expect and for lessons to go directions you did not see. #ellchat
A4) I model and use sentence frames, making sure my students have access to the necessary vocabulary OR a pathway to find the appropriate vocabulary. #ELLCHAT
A4 I hear from many preK and K teachers that their curriculum is totally prescribed - from the books they read to the questions they ask. I wish curriculum writers would make it clear - those questions are just examples! #ELLCHAT
A4: I believe that in order to have high expectations from our students, WE have to have them for ourselves...so intentional planning is needed to make sure HOT is embedded within our lessons. #ellchat
A lot of educators feel more comfortable with perscribed curriculum. One of my goals as the ELL co-teacher is to help teachers go beyond what is perscribed. #ellchat
A4 Students need to see you comparing containers to see which will fit, or writing rough drafts and editing your work … even for a memo. Model having questions more often than you model having answers #ELLCHAT
A4) I'm thinking of website or source evaluation using CRAP test or Research Ready, which walks kids through evaluation with simple questions. #ellchathttps://t.co/2aMkqP4Omn
A4) I agree! This is not something that even experienced teachers can teach off the top of their heads. Language levels of the Ss keep changing so we need to readjust our instruction. #ELLCHAT
A4: I believe that in order to have high expectations from our students, WE have to have them for ourselves...so intentional planning is needed to make sure HOT is embedded within our lessons. #ellchat
A4 Yes, Ss need to know that we struggle too and we can model how we rethink , reword our answers.#ellchat The best discussions are when I tell them, there is no right or wrong answer.
A4: @SIOPModel has HOTS as one of its features. If you do a good job building background, teaching vocab, & incorporating practice/application, HOTS is natural fit. #ELLChat
I couldn't be on tonight- but here are my thoughts... Ss in EL programs need equitable opportunities to use HOTS.They have the logic, just working on the language.#ellchat

A4) Starting with a game to review the vocabulary they will need to apply later in lesson to demonstrate the higher-order thinking skills. Within that game, having Ss reflect on what vocab. they know well and less well, telling a partner how (s)he will review that vocab. #ellchat
A3: #ELLCHAT i think that to be successful at this you must start with a few questions and be consistant. I like to incorporate just one or two in my lesson plans and then work up to more as the semester progresses. This will turn into a habit for the student.
A4: I would say that students' native language is a very powerful tool to support students in higher level thinking.
All students need is the appropriate scaffolding to show they CAN
#ellchat
A5: love this question. Teaching the language that they need to do higher order thinking is crucial. They can't just use the simple present/past tense for everything. Also teaching how to form questions. #ellchat
