A2 Some think higher order thinking skills don’t apply to PreK and K - but even young children need opportunities to examine and analyze new information - and we have to help teachers make sure that happens with ELLs/DLLs #ELLCHAT
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A2) ELLs are often placed in remedial classes keeping them from exposure tohigher level thinking. #ELLCHAT
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A2) When I taught K-1 ELLs, I thought getting them to listen to, understand and respond to questions requiring HOTS. #ELLCHAT

A2 Some think higher order thinking skills don’t apply to PreK and K - but even young children need opportunities to examine and analyze new information - and we have to help teachers make sure that happens with ELLs/DLLs #ELLCHAT
  • ElizabethEmmons May 14 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A2) Comprehensible input for English beginners and keeping language objectives in focus once engaged in higher order thinking tasks are two of my biggest challenges. #ELLCHAT
  • HSeslteacher May 14 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A2: Reducing the linguistic load question and response so ELLs can show deeper thinking #ELLchat
  • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2 Creating a format , platform, that allows beginning EL Ss to share their thinking. It can be done but we have to be creative #ELLCHAT
  • emilyfranESL May 14 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2: I would say students' confidence! For the most part, our ELLs don't believe they can rise to higher expectations...WE MUST demonstrate how much we believe in them and KNOW they CAN! #ELLchat
  • sragordon May 14 @ 9:17 PM EDT
#ellchat A1) Christie Gordon, ELL Coordinator in South Korea
  • famouspeitra May 14 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2) so many factors- schema, what vocabulary is necessary to give students access and opportunity, and TIME! #ELLCHAT
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2 Students that have experience in school learning in their home countries have at least some idea about the kinds of thinking needed, but young children don’t have that experience, and tchrs have to find a way to nurture that thinking when they don’t speak English yet #ELLCHAT
  • GEagen1 May 14 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2: I struggle with simplifying the language without simplifying the thinking. Working on it daily. #ELLCHAT
  • CBTennyson May 14 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Yes! Me too. I think we want to have the Higher Order thinking, but sometimes underestimate the Ss #ellchat
    In reply to @GEagen1
  • emilyfranESL May 14 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Very true!! WE have to create the opportunities they NEED to rise to high expectations!! #ellchat
    In reply to @DelaneyELDiana
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2 so the challenge with younger children is first to help them understand what is higher order thinking - that they do have opinions and observations and discoveries - then how to share them! #ELLCHAT
  • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:20 PM EDT
I struggle with this too. I keep rewording questions, adding pictures or diagrams. Challenging #ellchat
    In reply to @GEagen1
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2) I agree! I wrote a lesson based on the children's book Pa Lia's first Day many years ago to demonstrate levels of Blooms. https://t.co/xCpObEaCIT #ELLCHAT

      In reply to @DelaneyELDiana
  • emilyfranESL May 14 @ 9:22 PM EDT
It is a very thin line...I am so glad you maintain consciousness about this difference! It's important to make sure content is NEVER "simplified" just because of language proficiency #ellchat
    In reply to @GEagen1
  • famouspeitra May 14 @ 9:22 PM EDT
We should have higher order thinking in ALL classes! #ellchat
    In reply to @judiehaynes
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A2 Yes! Some #earlyed tchrs ask me for busywork apps to keep DLLs/ELLs “occupied” while they teach the other kids. As if a repetitive basic counting app with cute pictures takes the place of counting out the number of blocks you need to make a tower bigger than yourself! #ELLCHAT
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Q3) What are some examples of activities you use to develop HOTS with ELLs? #ELLCHAT
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:23 PM EDT
    Yes! #ELLCHAT

  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A2 One thing is for sure: When the teacher is talking at young children, they are not free to evaluate, experiment, or explore new information/materials! #ELLCHAT
  • CBTennyson May 14 @ 9:24 PM EDT
I remember having this problem when I taught elementary. It was maddening. Some Ts couldn’t look at the ELs with and asset prespective! #ellchat
    In reply to @KarenNemethEdM
  • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Yes!!! I have said this so many times. The gap starts to widen when Ss are continuously placed in remedial groups. #ELLchat
#ELLCHAT

There are great for all ages. #ellchat
  • sragordon May 14 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A2) As a co-teacher, the challenge is providing the time and structures necessary in the Biology classroom for ELLs to show their higher-order thinking skills. Ss have the capacity, but it may take longer. Moving on before they are finished could impact their confidence.#ellchat
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:25 PM EDT
    A3) #ELLCHAT resource: Bloom’s Taxonomy for ELL Students. https://t.co/bUEMrgArab #ellchat
  • HSeslteacher May 14 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A2: Another challenge can be wording of questions at various levels. Hard to come up with quality questions on the fly. I have to plan in advance. #ELLChat
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A2) Yes wait time is something we need to convey to gen ed teachers. Our ELLs need time. #ELLCHAT

  • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A2 I like to have Ss discuss historical pictures related to the unit of study in SS. Students discuss perspectives based on what is happening in picture. Best discussions #ELLchat
  • CBTennyson May 14 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3) When reading, open ended questions where Ss have to construct an answer based on some sort of evidence. Any answer with strong evidence can be correct #ellchat
  • HSeslteacher May 14 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3: Sequencing events, sorting & labeling key terms, compare/contrast activities work well even for students at emerging English proficiency level. #ELLChat
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A3 I think this question can best be answered for PreK by suggesting engaging materials. So often, the quality of materials supports higher level exploration rather than planned activities. #ELLCHAT
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A3) We need to move to Q3! What are some examples of activities you use to develop HOTS with ELLs? #ELLCHAT
  • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:30 PM EDT
That is my challenge, my best planned questions might be hard. So we just keep rewording. Keep writing notes on lesson plans for the next time.#ellchat
    In reply to @HSeslteacher
  • emilyfranESL May 14 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A3: An activity I find to be very effective in challenging my students in high order thinking is creating/publishing books using @writereaderapp. My students know they have to THINK and BE authors so they're are challenged beyond their abilities! #ellchat
  • HSeslteacher May 14 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A3: @KarenNemethEdM So something like these materials for K classrooms to do science? #ELLChat #AmesCSD
    • ACSD_News May 14 @ 12:22 PM EDT
As this school year is wrapping up, we’re already looking to next year. Science kits for kindergarten classes were being assembled today at the District Office. #AmesCSD
  • famouspeitra May 14 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A3: I ask my students to compare and contrast a lot- what relationships can be built between and among concepts. #ELLCHAT
  • kruu_justin May 14 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A2: I find that some higher level thinking requires a lot more prep work in vocabulary and language scaffolding. It's tough to find the balance to provide students with just enough to be successful on their own. #ellchat
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A3) Encourage higher level thinking questions, use graphic organizers, have Ss make mind movies. #Ellchat
  • GEagen1 May 14 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A3: #ELLCHAT I do a lot of conferring with my students. We talk and discuss. Usually for EL oral language is mastered first so this interactions has them thinking HOTS while allowing the opportunity to model academic conversations and language.
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Please use the #ELLCHAT hashtag so that we see your tweets in the chat. Thanks and welcome.

A1: I'm Justin Garcia and I'm the ELD Coordinator at Chiang Mai International School (come visit Thailand!)
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A3 Examples of materials that support teaching HOTS - items with intrinsic meaning - like sorting the shapes of blocks that will not make your tower fall down. Here are some ideas https://t.co/R5lZu6oRYs #ELLCHAT
  • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A3 Opinions related to a topic Ss stand on different parts of the room and explain their opinion. We need to expose Ss to current events or topics that they can debate #ELLchat
  • kruu_justin May 14 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A3: My mind went to math. I would challenge my students to use their resources / strategies to solve open ended problems, but also explain their reasoning through whatever medium their comfortable in (pictures, home language, etc). #ellchat
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A3 You know those plastic “bears” we see in every #earlyed classroom? That’s an example of material that shuts down actual higher order thinking - no value at all!! Here’s why: https://t.co/cnkV9Q5dFZ #ELLCHAT
  • CBTennyson May 14 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A3) I think these types of activities are good for all ages. For older Ss you can add more difficult tasks or add a writing piece to challenge their thinking. #ELLChat
  • kruu_justin May 14 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A1: A1: I'm Justin Garcia and I'm the ELD Coordinator at Chiang Mai International School (come visit Thailand!) #ellchat

  • ElizabethEmmons May 14 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3) I like to use project-based learning, so that students are engaged in problem-solving and/or inquiry-based research. I also love using video/animation so students can share knowledge at their language levels. #ELLChat
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3 and really, isn’t that part of higher order thinking to be able to evaluate your questions and give you feedback about why they’re too hard and what might be helpful? #ELLCHAT
    • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:30 PM EDT
That is my challenge, my best planned questions might be hard. So we just keep rewording. Keep writing notes on lesson plans for the next time.#ellchat

  • sragordon May 14 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3) Has anyone used deBono's Thinking Hats before? I used it as Spanish teacher, but not consistently. I would like to give it a try again, providing sentence frames. Ss can practice 1 hat at a time, modeling for each other and practicing the different HOTS. #ellchat
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A3) Other HOTS activities include teaching vocabulary needed to express thinking, model your thinking to Ss, teach Ss to infer and problem solving strategies. #ELLCHAT
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A3 Even for little kids - child talking supports AND reveals thinking. Why do teachers feel the need to control everything?? #ELLCHAT
    • GEagen1 May 14 @ 9:33 PM EDT

A3) Sorry I should have explained this. HOTS is higher order thinking skills. #ELLCHAT
    • ElizabethEmmons May 14 @ 9:32 PM EDT
I’m horrible with acronyms... What are HOTS? 😅
      In reply to @judiehaynes
  • CBTennyson May 14 @ 9:39 PM EDT
This is great too! I think sentence frames can help students express thinking with HOTS if they are used so students have choice to see which one can be the best choice for their answer. #ellchat
    • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:37 PM EDT

A3 Yes and with young children, this can start with practical problem solving. We spilled some juice. Should we get a broom or a rag to clean it up. It’s cold outside but we want to go outside - what can we do to stay warm? #ELLCHAT
    • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:37 PM EDT

Q3)How do you incorporate higher order thinking skills (HOTS) into your lesson plans for ELLs? #ELLCHAT
  • emilyfranESL May 14 @ 9:44 PM EDT
    Should this be Q4?!? #ellchat
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:45 PM EDT
I think this is Question 4: How do you incorporate higher order skills (HOTS) in lesson plans for ELLs = answer with A4 Thanks! #ELLCHAT
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:45 PM EDT
Q4) How do you incorporate higher order thinking skills (HOTS) into your lesson plans for ELLs? #ELLCHAT Sorry for the mistake.
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:46 PM EDT
A4 Maybe, to include HOTS in your lesson plans, you have to plan for questions - and NOT necessarily for answers! Be open to surprises! #ELLCHAT
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:46 PM EDT
    Thanks #ELLCHAT
  • CBTennyson May 14 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A4) If we want HOTS in our lessons, we have to plan well! You also have to be willing to hear things you might not expect and for lessons to go directions you did not see. #ellchat
  • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A3 Using visuals and manipulatives to model and answer math problems are fun. #ELLCHAT
  • famouspeitra May 14 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A4) I model and use sentence frames, making sure my students have access to the necessary vocabulary OR a pathway to find the appropriate vocabulary. #ELLCHAT
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:48 PM EDT
A4 I hear from many preK and K teachers that their curriculum is totally prescribed - from the books they read to the questions they ask. I wish curriculum writers would make it clear - those questions are just examples! #ELLCHAT
  • CBTennyson May 14 @ 9:48 PM EDT
A4) You also have to let the class take control of the discussion, not with pat answers but with their own inspiration. #ellchat
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator May 14 @ 9:48 PM EDT
A4 Indeed - but how do you write that into a lesson plan? #ELLCHAT
    • CBTennyson May 14 @ 9:48 PM EDT
A4) You also have to let the class take control of the discussion, not with pat answers but with their own inspiration. #ellchat
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A4) I think that we have to model our thinking so that students learn the language of expressing HOTS. #ELLCHAT
  • emilyfranESL May 14 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A4: I believe that in order to have high expectations from our students, WE have to have them for ourselves...so intentional planning is needed to make sure HOT is embedded within our lessons. #ellchat
  • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A4 I have tried to start with an Essential question that guides all the others. I am continuously rewording and adding. #ELLCHAT
  • kruu_justin May 14 @ 9:50 PM EDT
A lot of educators feel more comfortable with perscribed curriculum. One of my goals as the ELL co-teacher is to help teachers go beyond what is perscribed. #ellchat

  • famouspeitra May 14 @ 9:50 PM EDT
Any curriculum we use should be considered one tool of many tools! Not the only resource. #ellchat

A4 Students need to see you comparing containers to see which will fit, or writing rough drafts and editing your work … even for a memo. Model having questions more often than you model having answers #ELLCHAT
  • sragordon May 14 @ 9:52 PM EDT
A4) I'm thinking of website or source evaluation using CRAP test or Research Ready, which walks kids through evaluation with simple questions. #ellchat https://t.co/2aMkqP4Omn

Perfect, Justin! Teaching outside the box is what touches students' hearts NOT prescribed curriculum! #ellchat
    In reply to @kruu_justin
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:52 PM EDT
A4) I agree! This is not something that even experienced teachers can teach off the top of their heads. Language levels of the Ss keep changing so we need to readjust our instruction. #ELLCHAT

  • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A4 Yes, Ss need to know that we struggle too and we can model how we rethink , reword our answers.#ellchat The best discussions are when I tell them, there is no right or wrong answer.

  • HSeslteacher May 14 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A4: @SIOPModel has HOTS as one of its features. If you do a good job building background, teaching vocab, & incorporating practice/application, HOTS is natural fit. #ELLChat
  • MrsSaid17 May 14 @ 9:54 PM EDT
I couldn't be on tonight- but here are my thoughts... Ss in EL programs need equitable opportunities to use HOTS.They have the logic, just working on the language.#ellchat
  • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:55 PM EDT
A4) Good point! I agree that the structure of SIOP teaching can help a teacher add HOTS to their lesson planning. #ELLCHAT

  • sragordon May 14 @ 9:55 PM EDT
A4) Starting with a game to review the vocabulary they will need to apply later in lesson to demonstrate the higher-order thinking skills. Within that game, having Ss reflect on what vocab. they know well and less well, telling a partner how (s)he will review that vocab. #ellchat
  • DelaneyELDiana May 14 @ 9:55 PM EDT

Q5 . What resources help you support higher level thinking skills for ELLs? #ellchat
  • ElizabethEmmons May 14 @ 9:57 PM EDT
Indeed! All of the other features of the SIOP Model set the stage for challenging discussions and HOTS. #ELLChat
    In reply to @HSeslteacher, @SIOPModel
  • GEagen1 May 14 @ 9:58 PM EDT
A3: #ELLCHAT i think that to be successful at this you must start with a few questions and be consistant. I like to incorporate just one or two in my lesson plans and then work up to more as the semester progresses. This will turn into a habit for the student.
    • judiehaynes - Moderator May 14 @ 9:45 PM EDT

  • emilyfranESL May 14 @ 9:58 PM EDT
