Hello everyone. Welcome to tonight’s #AppleEduChat focusing on accessibility. Please introduce yourself and share your favorite movie from this year’s oscars!
Terri Cullen Associate Professor University of Oklahoma Favorite movie - did not seem many.. but really liked black panther this weekend! #appleeduchat
Good evening everyone! I’m Michelle, an instructional tech coach from a burb southwest of Chicago. Favorite movie was Coco. Love the vibrant colors and family message, but I need tissues every time!#AppleEDUchat
Looking forward to getting started with #AppleEDuchat in a few minutes. Let’s talk #UDL and #a11y ... but first, a few tips on Making Social Media Accessible #ClassroomClips
a1) I have a student working on this.. UDL is about designing for all learners and accessibility is what the technology offers you as options to be able to interact and communicate. #AppleEduChat
A1. To me: Universal design gets at the heart of planning for all learners from the beginning. Accessibility is about how specific individuals will gain the utilization of specific content and resources #AppleEDUchat
A1 accessibility is letting everyone, esp those with needs and disabilities use technology and everyday items. While universal design is the familiarity or commonality of an object. Like phones will always have the same shape and size that makes it recognizable #AppleEDUchat
A1. Universal design focuses on difference in learning styles while accessibility decreases or eliminates unnessary barriers for those with disabilities #AppleEduChat
A1: Accessible Design is a design process in which the needs of PWD are specifically considered whereas Universal Design is the design of products to be usable by everyone to the greatest extent w/o adaptability. But there is also Usable Design. #AppleEDUChat
A1: UDL seems to me to be the mindset shift and plan for providing for all learners where as accessibility is related to the specific implementation. #appleeduchat
A1: #UDL is the foundation for #Accessibility to flourish for all. It can be inclusive. It can also be flexible and separate- it’s all about the end user. #AppleEDUchat
Looking forward to getting started with #AppleEDuchat in a few minutes. Let’s talk #UDL and #a11y ... but first, a few tips on Making Social Media Accessible #ClassroomClips
A1 - Our province did some extensive action research on #UDL in real classrooms and published all of our work as teachers here. I'm the first article only because of our school's alphabetical stature :) #AppleEDUChathttps://t.co/aLapm3pS1n
Hi Mia! Yep. Apparently Thursday and Friday will be the end of the world weather wise :) These twitter chats simply distract from the inevitable :) #AppleEDUChat
Looking forward to getting started with #AppleEDuchat in a few minutes. Let’s talk #UDL and #a11y ... but first, a few tips on Making Social Media Accessible #ClassroomClips
A1: I feel that universal design learning is focused more on the instruction, where as accessibility would be the resources or tools we utilize to achieve an outcome. #AppleEDUchat
A2: There are so many tools that allow printed text to be read to students. Students can also voice to text, which can save them time and provide accessibility. #appleEduChat
A2: print is a reality but not a barrier. I’m not interested in settling for no options. Lately, faculty at @HACC_info have been putting pressure on our textbook publishers to offer #accessible options. Many accommodate, some don’t/can’t. #appleEDUchat
A2 ebooks and magazine subscriptions. I’m glad in the Philippines, print is still a reality and books are still the main form of reading material. #AppleEDUchat
Q2 #AppleEDUchat I encourage my Ss with print disabilities to read with their ears, reading it can take on so many forms. @AndreaPrupas strong advocate for this!
A2: Teaching accessibility tools to ALL my science students for reading text on iPad has made it easier to access content for them AND better work flow for me! Most learners benefit from hearing/seeing text. #AppleEDUchat
Universal design is about considerations for the task - allowing the best case scenario for all, accessibility is consideration of the tools reqd for individuals to access the task #AppleEduChat
It is something I am still working on implementing. I don't know that I have had students try it yet. I am fortunate to have a large classroom where students regularly spread out to work in a volume and space that is comfortable for them. #appleeduchat
A2: Print materials are okay provided that the content is always up to date. Possible barrier would be the cost of having printouts especially the hardbound ones. #AppleEDUchat
Q1: Universal design is about considerations for the task - allowing the best case scenario for all; accessibility is consideration of the tools reqd for individuals to access the task #AppleEduChat
A2: I agree with many that it depends on the student. I think the key is offering a choice in the type of print available. Our students have not only access to features on the iPad, but other apps that can level text and read it aloud. #AppleEDUchat
A2: print is not a barrier! So many options depending on individual needs: speak selection, speak screen, reader view-PDF options with iOS11 and allowing students to instant markup, font size, zoom, etc! Thank you iPad! #AppleEDUchat
A2 Providing print to all students does not equate to providing the SAME print to all students. Removing barriers and adding visual images and color coding is powerful! #AppleEDUchat
A2: today, in @AppleEDU Professional Learning, @DodyPelts and I made a Clips video about better note-taking using #MyScriptNebo....allowing for conversion of handwriting to text, then to speech, helping all students take notes more effectively (we hope). #AppleEDUchat
A2 - I found this Fall that the most access to print my students were getting came from authoring books in @iBooks Author. Coming to Amazon soon! #AppleEDUChat
A3: I think it’s critical to break large assignments (research papers, for example) into small steps, such as a daily task list...then can go into reminders or another planner app. #AppleEDUchat
A3: It is crucial to not only tell Ss what the goal is, but help them learn how to get there. Scaffold to teach them the skills to successfully complete long term assignments and study for large tests #appleeduchat
Thanks so much! Very eager to learn, and this is an amazing resource. A very beta version of my new project can be found at https://t.co/DRy2VY73Hq Any feedback greatly appreciated #AppleEduChat
#AppleEDUchat I like them as well however, many of them are hard to get information back out officially or change it over into another format particularly PDFs and digital documents.
A3: By giving them options of how their goals will look and feedback on progression. We love to use @Seesaw for goal setting. Students can write their goal, draw a picture of it, or record themselves and their progress #appleeduchat
A3 term end chats and conferences. Actually setting time apart from lessons to have students think back on achievements and listen in on their parents talk about what goals they want for them and using it to make their own. #AppleEDUchat
Q3 #AppleEDUchat I encourage and teach my Ss to make small goals & break down tasks into steps. Use of Calendar App, Reminders, Notes to support needs. Text to speech to set reminders, notes...
Q3 - Timers and Reminders, teaching Ss to set reminders to manage task and set goals. Timers to stay on track and self monitor behavior in class #AppleEDUchat
A3: positive reinforcements. “I really like the way you did this.” I have sticker and a removers of what they should do. We have started a chain of positivity to recognize the good deeds that students are doing regularly. #AppleEDUchat
A3: We talk about goals beyond assignments. If their goal is to be in an honors class by their senior year of high school, we talk about what that takes. I find that sports analogies really help to explain when talking goals and practice. #appleeduchat
A3 - For students setting goals we've found that it has to be their goal they are setting. We just have to be creative and lead them to the best possible goal. Ownership and SMART goals are everything. #AppleEDUChat
But epubs for example could be screen read in iBooks. I think they are more flexible and there are lots of programs that can make and read them. #appleeduchat
A3: My Executive Functioning was brought to me today by Tile, Apple Watch, GSuiteEDU, Google Home Mini and multiple calendars (and a human colleague @oksarge#AppleEDUchat
#AppleEDUchat I was working with my Ss in grades five and six Showing them how to use calendars and reminder tools to help organize their lives. We need to stop teaching skills and start teaching behaviors.
Yes but epubs are readable in iBooks.. they can be made a variety of ways and even things like multitouch books can have the text easily adjusted. #appleeduchat
So true. It’s also important to honor their journey and perspective- sometimes their roadmap leads to some really cool places- and stays true to the goal! #AppleEDUchat
A3 - Teacher PD often fails because the goal might be SMART but nobody in the room feels they OWN that goal. The why must be activated before the what. Apple does this best! #AppleEDUChat
A3: something that has helped, even all students, is breaking projects down into portions. Visuals for time management/directions or color coding for organization. I love the notes app for checklists. #AppleEDUchat
A3: I also explain the learning goal at the beginning of the lesson. Scaffolding is important. It is good to also know where students are at.#AppleEDUchat
Scaffolding is critical! Breaking things into digestible components for immediate focus but then backing up to see the whole as we make things more complex, multistep etc #AppleEDUchat#EDT520
It will be an improvement when EPub books are designed so that the table of contents consists of active links, as is the case with most iBooks. :) #AppleEduChat
In case you share pictures this eve, you can add image description in Twitter Accessibility - check out this #ClassroomClips to learn how #AppleEDUchat

Q4: Working with students with Autism, SEL is a big part of my job, but the biggest game changer has been simply the iPad camera. Video Model is huge, and having students create their own social videos is awesome!! #AppleEDUchat
A4 - I do a lot of work with students on #Empathy. or in STEM class STEMpathy. Here is an exemplar example of my #SEL work. This time with Minecraft Education Edition. It is fun and very popular. #AppleEDUChathttps://t.co/qPYML0Gyt4
A4 It's important to have equality in a classroom. A one-to-one iPad classroom allows all students to personalize the device for their own needs, SEL included. #AppleEDuchat

A4: Does anyone have students use Apple Watch in class? I have more and more students with them, and we enjoy using Breathe app in science class. I’d love to hear stats on the benefits to SEL. I’m sure it’s there. #AppleEDUchat
A4 - Lego took over 30 years to make their first wheelchair Character. I've been pushing Minecraft to accomplish this ASAP for the last 2 years. It means much more than it seems at first. It would be everything! #AppleEDUChat
A4: many of our classrooms are incorporating movement breaks, yoga and growth mindset activities on top of our SEL lessons. Movement breaks are a must even in PL days. We used #numbers today in our #AppleVanguard for an SEL sort activity #AppleEDUchat
#AppleEDUchat,Explain everything app is a wonderful tool for social stories. We can draw the story, Make a video with the student recording your voice, and print the sheet for the classroom teacher to use.
Hello everyone. Welcome to tonight’s #AppleEduChat focusing on accessibility. Please introduce yourself and share your favorite movie from this year’s oscars!
@explainevrythng is the single greatest app ever made since the day it launched until today. If I could Volume Purchase just one app it would be this one for students. #AppleEDUchat
#AppleEDUchat,Explain everything app is a wonderful tool for social stories. We can draw the story, Make a video with the student recording your voice, and print the sheet for the classroom teacher to use.
A2. Using scientific research articles students learn science literacy skills, like data analysis. But I also make sure to use paper assignments for those that wish to use them. #appleeduchat
My 8th graders do pretty good with it. We use the timer on the watches constantly. They set reminders for themselves with them too. Seems to be ok…for now. I’ve been modeling the proper use all year for them. I show what focus looks like. #AppleEDUchat
Another Twitter accessibility tip - Share out a transcript after the chat. I can’t keep up with your Tweets tonight with my assistive tech. Will reply/comment later. #AppleEDUchat
A3. I use a portfolio exam. They set goals at the beginning (at least some do) and discuss where they are at the midpoint/endpoint depending on their choice of data. I also give #sbl rubrics at the beginning of units and analyze it with the test. #AppleEDUChat
Getting students to consistently use the technology in their classrooms. There’s an inverse relationship for students with mild to moderate disabilities and their willingness to use technology as they get older. #AppleEDUchat
A5: How do we best answer the question from colleagues about WHY they should adopt a universal design pedagogy when they’ve “never had a student with accessibility needs?” @nancykawaja#AppleEDUchat
Should we teach students multiple tools for using assistive technology or are we overwhelming them with information. Assistive technology doesn’t always work. #AppleEDUchat
A5 Why do so many of us leave the default in word processing and presentation slides white background and black (small) text if the first thing we do is change it when creating a new file???? #AppleEDUchat
A5: How do we best answer the question from colleagues about WHY they should adopt a universal design pedagogy when they’ve “never had a student with accessibility needs?” @nancykawaja#AppleEDUchat
A5: How do you build buy-in that accessibility supports all learners not just student with disabilities? Building the culture of acceptance, so students feel safe using the tools.
#AppleEDUchat
a5) I am pretty questioning.. I wonder a lot and often ask people that i see using assistive tech how it works. #appleeduchat The users are the best experts.
A5 - When CEO's are responsible to their shareholders for maximum profits only, how does #Accessibility earn its rightful spot in all companies' agendas? And why don't we applaud those who make it matter even louder? #AppleEDUChat
Two things my boss used to say to me when is were only five minutes away from being disabled. And in Canada and in Nova Scotia if people want to sell their products the market is only getting older. #AppleEDUchat
Use it, use it, use it. Make it so common it loses any stigma. Call it “personal preferences for learning” because that’s what they are. We all need custom solutions, because we are individuals. #AppleEDUchat
TO your PD question: The other day, we had an interpreter mix up and I was asked to type for our new #asl faculty member - gosh, i wish they had used a script for some of the talk - would have made it so much easier. #appleeduchat
A6: My #ADEfriends and Twitter! I learn so much through our conversations and meet ups. Working with everyone helps me view my students in a whole other light. #AppleEDUchat
Just spent time in my home town Lunenburg Nova Scotia with a 70 year old and a 90 year old celebrating their birthdays. I hear that @lockey09 !! #AppleEDUChat
Your final #a11y challenge for the night - Download The Accessible House from Kurt Klynen and Luis Perez and let us know your favorite workflow (https://t.co/3rMQ8NMAy7#AppleEDUchat
A5: How can we create a resource that easily outlines the best accessibility tools for the wide variety of abilities that our students have? This kind of tool would be instrumental in encouraging teachers to quickly find the right tools for them/their students <3 #AppleEDUchat
A6: from @ibuddha one of my favourite images that reminds me of each student I support. The answer might be different for each student but will be centered on them. Access impacts the ability to Process. Process allows for a full and true Expression of understanding #AppleEDuchat
Colleagues might just not be aware of having had students with accessibility needs. Less visible or invisible needs are still needs. And UDL might just help everyone perform better, too. #AppleEDUChat
A5: How do we best answer the question from colleagues about WHY they should adopt a universal design pedagogy when they’ve “never had a student with accessibility needs?” @nancykawaja#AppleEDUchat
A6: Probably magnifier or speech-to-text! I have a friend with macular degeneration and sharing these tools has really helped! Also LOVE live titles - so that students are able to relate words to speech and read it when they can't hear it <3 #AppleEDUchat
Super cool! These should be in every classroom. Do they have fillable ones for students to answer? Very empowering to see connections to tools #AppleEDUchat
A6: from @ibuddha one of my favourite images that reminds me of each student I support. The answer might be different for each student but will be centered on them. Access impacts the ability to Process. Process allows for a full and true Expression of understanding #AppleEDuchat
A6: right now this chat is one of my favorite resources. I’m trying to absorb as much as I can to better my students. The resources from @eyeonaxs have been a huge inspiration for me after meeting him at #ISTE14 thanks to @ShannonSoger#AppleEDUchat
No kidding! I haven't really tried to do something like this before! But it's sure a motivation to practice! Thanks all for a very informative experience!! #AppleEduChat
A6: I am so impressed with @AppleEDU's built in accessibility features. You can tell that it is a core value to make their tools accessible #appleEduChat
.@nancykawaja & @eyeonaxs Thank YOU for not only leading tonights chat, but also making it accessible though video & ASL & sharing such awesome tips! Learned a lot! #AppleEDUchat
