Hey all! Sean Olson HS math teacher from southern NJ here and feeling real excited bc of all the great things we've already accomplished at our school in just the 1st trimester. #FormativeChat
Q1- How are you combating the tendency to assess content skills while looking through the lens of social-emotional and work study habits? #FormativeChat
John, principal of @RascalPride K-6 ES. Glad to be here. I am loving this school year - so much positivity and good stuff has happened so far #formativechat
Welcome Everyone! Tell who you are, where you are from, and how you are FEELING about this school year?
Don't forget to use #FormativeChat in your response and we will be using Q1/A1 format.
A1- building relationships with students can help ts know these skills. If you do not have a relationship, then the social-emotional part will be difficult to spot. #formativechat
A1 - Have said it before but always worth repeating and that is to build those relationship with the Ss and create a safe and welcoming environment. #FormativeChat
Q1- How are you combating the tendency to assess content skills while looking through the lens of social-emotional and work study habits? #FormativeChat
A1: I taught 6th grade (1st year of MIDDLE school) so it was VERY important to “get to know” them before jumping into content. There are SO many OTHER things going on! #PubertyRocks#formativechat
Q1- How are you combating the tendency to assess content skills while looking through the lens of social-emotional and work study habits? #FormativeChat
A1 Choice. Can the student show you mastery in a way that fits their strengths for communication and work. It's important that they stretch but that is assessing something different but also important. #formativechat
A1- We are currently working on a new method of reporting out on the Habits of a learner. Finding new ways to express how Ss progress as learners beyond the content. #formativechat
A1: It all starts with the heart! Knowing our kids and building that trust is important! Relationships and good pedagogy go hand in hand. #FormativeChat
Just saw on Twitter today that our choir has been selected to perform on stage with Foreigner at the new Atlantic City Hard Rock Hotel and Casino! That got me real pumped watching the audition video they sent in! #FormativeChat
A1. When you set the goals and objectives WITH the student the two of you can agree to focus on behavior you want to build.
Be sure to include objective about how many times, when and where the behavior will be practiced. Please go further than reward/punishment! #FormativeChat
A1: you have to know your Ss; build those relationships and get to know them as ppl...those #SEL and habits of mind need to be integrated into learning...teach content thru the skills...skills should be the focus.. #formativechat
A1: Without working on #SEL & building those relationships from the get go, it's harder to manage those turbulent times in class. With a relationship already there, Ts can navigate the choppy water without capsizing the boat. #FormativeChat
A!: Agree 100% Kristi. Relationships are vital and the more you know the child, the better you can determine needs and then get into content #formativechat
A1: It's a fine line. I am comforted by the fact that social emotional skills have a direct impact on the mastery of content. One usually begets the other, but not always of course. #formativechat
#FormativeChat A1: student agency and group work are my go to ways to incorp person-person skills. Also, i have almost all of my work as partner work with labs and projects
I love this mentality. We want them to be focused on learning and growing as a learner for their lifespan. If we believe it we need to model and monitor it. #FormativeChat
A1 I'm constantly trying to find a balance between the need (requirements) to assess the content with the bigger need which is assessing to gauge where my ELLs are succeeding and where they need reinforcement. #formativechat
A1 I teach in a self contained social emotional unit. SEL is all I do. Having a set goals and reflect on them matters. Giving and practicing strategies matters too. #FormativeChat
A1~strong, trusting relationships first & all else seems to fall into place ~ need to know who you are teaching, what makes them tick & value what they bring to the table ...
#FormativeChat
A1: Find activities that all ss can do, even if it’s by guessing. Sit down with them to see their thinking. Give them a life preserver. Allow to show mastery in ways they can. Relationships relationships relationships. Don’t get on them for little things. #FormativeChat
Hey everyone! University of Montana Western student joining... I am finishing my last semester of classes before student teaching! English and secondary ed. #formativechat
A1: Ts need to look at what Ss are consistently doing and evaluate their habits change over time. It is important to set expectations early and quantify it into a rubric. #FormativeChat
A1 #2 - In my classroom, I look to find ways to make my lessons more than just content. My Ss will remember non-academic discussions more than any math I will teach them. And that means more to me than anything else. #formativechat
Yes! Staying in that reward/punishment cycle is dangerous. I'm all about #ditchtheclips and focusing on relationships/ skill building to maintain intrinsic motivation #FormativeChat
This is our 3rd international school. We have also been to Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh. Next stop is still being determined. Will keep you posted. #formativechat
A1: part of the SEL is ensuring Ss build relationships w/ each other, not just you...if Ss understand each other and have a sense of family, you can do so much! #formativechat
A1: Teaching freshmen in Alg 1 multiple times a day is the quickest way to understand the need for #SEL. They are full of energy, passion, and many emotions that are extremely exaggerated (highs/lows). Personal relationships set the foundation for learning. #FormativeChat
Q1/A1 format. In adult ed, it is critical to develop relationships from the onset. Use interest inventories, face-to-face meetings, and build a strong community both in and out of the classroom #FormativeChat
A2: Our district has a typical citizenship grade that is included on the report card @ the middle school. Unfortunately there isn't a framework to score, its subjective. #formativechat
Yes! Giving students choices in how they learn and share their learning allows them to use and practice different social-emotional learning skills in the process. #formativechat
A1: My my HS doesn't have #SEL related components, but am not sure about the ELEM in my D. I know the state of MO is discussing writing some #SEL standards so all Ds will have to address them. Right now in HS, it's heavy on content and light on social-emotional. #FormativeChat
Hello! I'm a student teacher and I'd just like to get some wisdom from you. What do you think is the MOST important thing for a new teacher to know? #formativechat
Giving students choices in how they learn and demonstrate their learning honors their progress with #SELskills and allows them to practice them too. #formativechat
A1 Choice. Can the student show you mastery in a way that fits their strengths for communication and work. It's important that they stretch but that is assessing something different but also important. #formativechat
A2: we have learning skills but we don't assign grades...it's E (excellent), G (good), S (satisfactory) and N (needs improvement)...they were supposed to be changes for this year but due to political climate, its on hold... #formativechat
A2 - In our elementary schools there is reporting on this but once in our high schools not so much only formal reporting on grades. Would like to be able to offer behavior assessments separate but accompany summative progress. #FormativeChat
A2- we have an application of life skills section on grade cards. Teachers evaluate accountability, collaboration, perseverance, resourcefulness, and respectful. Ts check if students are struggles and leave a comment to give parents more info. #formativechat
A2. Please take a minute and read to the final point Stiggins, 1993 makes.
" ..... teach students to assess themselves."
So I would ask ... when writing the goals and objectives WITH the student was a method to assess progress also decided? #FormativeChat
A2: We have a citizenship category and assign an effort score from 1 to 3. There is no framework used, it is primarily based on teacher judgment #formativechat
A1: A primary school teacher told me that she has her students answer a variety of questions on their iPads when they arrive each day. Some questions are fun/humorous, and others are used to check in on students emotionally. #formativechat
A2: Yes, Behaviors that Promote Learning. We tend to use Second Step for SEL training and then it is teacher discretion on how to score - each area is stated as a positive trait and we score as C=Consistently O=Often S=Sometimes or R=Rarely. #formativechat
You get it! Time to reflect and direct instruction of SEL skills is needed by all our littles. Practice time is key too. Its always amazing how things generally move from self-contained practice to general practice. #FormativeChat
A2: have to think about how you can report on SEL through the content not always as separate entities...how is empathy, flexibility, open mindedness, etc being nurtured via the curriculum?? #equity#inquiry#inclusion#formativechat
Agreed! By building relationships, we can understand where students are at in terms of #SEL skill development and build the trust needed to effectively model and support them with ones they need to work on. #formativechat
A2: Not yet. We are diving into ACE scores, mindfulness, and implicit bias/perceptions. Can't imagine SEL grades won't be too far down the road. #formativechat
Yes! Staying in that reward/punishment cycle is dangerous. I'm all about #ditchtheclips and focusing on relationships/ skill building to maintain intrinsic motivation #FormativeChat
A2: We have an effort score. I go back and forth on whether or not we should have it. The great and powerful @rickwormeli2 has changed my mind and made it clear that we shouldn't grade Ss on their behavior, so I wonder what his response to this question would be. #formativechat
A2 My district is standards based in elementary. We are a 1-2-3 grade. There’s a rubric on what qualifies as each. Doesn’t have it-approaches & masters. Having students on BIPs and SEL goals trumps district grading some. #formativechat
A2 - The new model we are developing has descriptors at several levels for multiple habits of a learner. Much deeper than a simple checklist. Looking forward to seeing how this works next year. #formativechat
I love observing Ss and watching them grow over time. What type of rubric do you use? The #4OCFpln has been adding more single point rubrics into our classrooms #FormativeChat
A1: It all starts with the heart! Knowing our kids and building that trust is important! Relationships and good pedagogy go hand in hand. #FormativeChat
A2: Our District just started using standards-based rubrics for grades K-2 that includes a section on learning habits and study skills. There are many “soft” skills that we have to grade that will help them be successful in all areas. #FormativeChat
A2 At the moment the report card does not assess the SEL. We are able to provide comments to such but not a score. We are working to revamp our report card. #formativechat
My students struggle with making choices when I give them that option. They seem to want to be told what to do rather than think for themselves. #SELskills#formativechat
A2: One of the most powerful exercises I did in my MA program was to simply choose a struggling child and watch for extended time and track for two weeks and look for trends prior to SEL events, etc. it was powerful and profound. #FormativeChat
Those interpersonal skills are pivotal for long term success. Who cares what they know if they can't work well and build relationships with others, right? #FormativeChat
A2. 26 years trying to guide students with their behavior and nine years as a teacher of students with challenging behaviors, tells me ..... we don't know what we don't know ...... ah, but we sure are learning quickly!! #FormativeChat
Deprogramming is often necessary after Ss have had years of worksheet training. It's tough, but do it. I still struggle here but keep pushing for S choice and voice. #formativechat
A3: I feel lost that most of my responses are "we don't" or "we aren't talking about it". #SEL is critical, but our district needs to start somewhere. #formativechat
A3: We provide an effort score - but I much prefer to try to include this sort of information in a face to face chat with the students while I am conferencing with them about their work. #formativechat
Many of my students are second language and not accustomed to making choices or having opinions. I think they were not given choices early enough, so by the time I see them, they don't know what to do! #FormativeChat
A3: I like an idea shared on video this week by Teaching Channel-start the day choosing a particular SEL trait - discuss what it would look like and sound like, the group picks a goal and then at the end of the session/day they rate on how they achieved that goal. #formativechat
A3 My students are on an individualized daily point sheet that focuses on SEL goals and their BIP goals. Students are an integral part of setting their goal of the day and reflecting on what worked/didn’t each day. #formativechat
Q3- I use google forms and observations to make notes about ss application of life skills.
https://t.co/5yIfQALyAN
This form helps for looking for patterns in social emotional learning
#formativechat
With ALL of those years of experience working with marvelous children who, at times, displayed explosive behavior I sure wish I would have met you and read this book. I appreciate you @Hahne_Elyse#FormativeChat
In reply to
@Hahne_Elyse, @EMercedLearning, @Hahne_Elyse
I believe my District developed learning supports rubric in cooperation with neighboring districts. We are basically grading for consistency in several study and social habits. #FormativeChat
A3 - I have used @goformative to get #SEL feedback from students. I have also used exit tickets that also address some of these components as well. At the beginning of the semester we do goal setting and visit these through out semester. #FormativeChat
A3: By getting to know my Ss, I can watch 4 warning signs, triggers, as well as help with the productivity, work habits, etc. I give them formative feedback on how much progress they're making toward completing work as well as feed back on the work, for example. #formativechat
The final question of our weekly #formativechat is now up! How are you formatively assessing students on #SELskills and supporting them in the classroom?
A3: community circles, four corners, self-assessment (assessment as learning), one on one conferences...it's more about Ss providing feedback to themselves and each other...self-reflect - be aware, acknowledge and act... #formativechat
Bc its easier and they may have never had the opportunity to do it before. They must be shown the way, supported on the journey, and feel why its worth it to them personally. #FormativeChat
#FormativeChat A3: mine are all informal. Watching and listening as I circulate the room, watch for non-verbal cues. Also, through strong, positive rapport, Ss will approach with issues if or when they arise. Promote a safe and positive learning env. I should mention I'm HS.
A3: I monitor and provide feedback on #SEL skills by...
1) model conflict resolution (and show my thought process)
2) give students vocab to express themselves
3) explicitly teach effective study skills
4) have universal high, clear expectations
#formativechat
A3: I think that monitoring SEL progress is probably easier for primary school teachers bc they spend the entire day with their students. For secondary teachers, I think that a daily routine such as writing journal entries may be an effective way to check in w Ss. #formativechat
Love it! Yes, I agree, I want them to have choices, but sometimes I have to really make sure those choices are things they know how to do now and if they know how to do them, are they things they can use in the future? #FormativeChat
A3: I try to give kids specific and affirmative feedback when I see them using #SEL skills. When I want them to work on a skill, I try using a 1:1 coaching conversation #formativechat
it's not bad but I believe it can be more personalized...we have to take each Ss as an individual and sometimes the indicators don't help or are not aligned....sigh... #formativechat
#3 Community everything. Regular temperature checks with the group. Asking students individually by providing opportunities for anonymity if necessary #formativechat
Now that you mention it, we have a citizenship award given to the senior boy and girl who staff vote for based on set criteria. It's the top honor. #formativechat
Or should you? When assessing I like to ensure I'm assessing just what I am intending to assess. Having them teased out helps me truly see where my littles need support #FormativeChat
Start every morning by greeting kids with hugs and high fives. Morning announcements I tell kids I love them. Helps them ditch the baggage they bring before the learning begins! #SEL#formativechat
A3: I also use Seesaw with targeted skills or as part of PBIS Check In - student chooses goals and self-monitors -- partnership with stakeholders. #formativechat
A3 @RyanPhilipp22 says Know them Well. Know them as people not just grades or behaviors. What do they like to listen to, watch, read, eat... people first. Be a listener, be a mentor. #formativechat
exactly!!! Content doesn't matter if they can't interact with it critically or interact with each other in ways that build awareness and encourage Ss to develop those habits of mind and question what they are learning. #formativechat
A3 The monitoring of these skills are done through informal observation and reported through teacher-student conferencing and parent contact through phone calls and emails. #formativechat
A3: this is how I first started off piloting @goformative in my classes. I asked Ss to rate their effort and then asked how can I help them improve that number. They opened up way more through that platform than just asking them in person as class. #formativechat
A3 SEL skills can be celebrated daily when appropriate and great skills are showcased in class. This helps monitor and encourage the growth of those skills #formativechat
A3. Monitoring SEL skills was something I learned through months of training when I received my certification. It doesn't mean making check marks - requires baseline data, several periods of time when behavior is observed, teaching skill (over and over), etc .... #FormativeChat
A3 I have private conversations with Ss who need that constant feedback on #SEL skills. The relationship is important to the Ss being receptive to that feedback. #formativechat
I love that you are looking at ACE scores, etc. As someone who has an ACE of 9 I realize the importance of understanding and teaching the whole child. #FormativeChat
A3: I keep it very simple. Set expectations early for Ss and give them feedback on how they are doing on a certain expectations using a smiley face Likert scale. Works best for younger Ss! #FormativeChat
A3 - I am very lucky in this one. I get to lead a team that is focused on making non-academic connections with Ss. Every T in the HS mentors a small group of Ss that meet 1x per week. I am super proud of the work we have done in this program already! #formativechat
A3: I like an idea shared on video this week by Teaching Channel-start the day choosing a particular SEL trait - discuss what it would look like and sound like, the group picks a goal and then at the end of the session/day they rate on how they achieved that goal. #formativechat
definitely...success criteria is crucial but SEL b/c of the sensitivity and individuality, we need to ensure we are meeting Ss where they are and it might mean that different Ss need different criteria or questions to consider... start where they are... #formativechat
Here's my latest post that goes over ways to sneak in #SEL at all levels. @Rdene915 asked me to drop it in. It's part 1 of a 4 part series in order to keep the length manageable. https://t.co/4i2jr4iezy#formativechat
Our chat - #BookCampPD just finished a two week focus on the book :-) @Hahne_Elyse was a guest moderator and is VERY knowledgeable! I learned quite a bit from her. Sure wish I would have known it decades ago :-( #FormativeChat
In reply to

I don't think behavior should be graded in conjunction with content. I do believe we should provide specific FEEDBACK and SUPPORT. What is assessed is addressed. #FormativeChat
And as someone with an ACE score of 0, I am glad we started off with a discussion on implicit bias and how perceptions play a big role in how we receive information or hear tone differently from each person. #formativechat
A3: Some ss need a little more grace, a little more space, a little more love. Others need to be challenged more. I treat it the same as learning. Provide equity not equality so that everyone succeeds. #FormativeChat
A3~
~purposeful ongoing conversations that focuses on the positive & authentic, specific feedback that includes language that praises, supports & encourages ~ model, practice, chat, practice & reinforce so more ~ flexible, authentic, shared 😊
#FormativeChat
I give my kiddies oral praise and sometimes they get to go to the prize box when they go over and beyond to show each other honor and respect and use their manners #formativechat
Thank you so much for joining me for #formativechat
A huge thank you to @goformative and @Rdene915 for letting me share my #SEL passion with all of you tonight! I hope to see you around Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Periscope learning about all things education!

Its how they communicate every single day with their friends. There is safety behind the computer screen knowing everyone can't hear or judge them on their thoughts. The amount of info I got was amazing. Even from those who rarely speak up in class. #FormativeChat

As we wrap up #formativechat, please give it up for @EMercedLearning ! She put together some really insightful and important Q's to ask! Integrating #SEL is a challenge and we loved the strategies we saw tonight!

I love that you tell your kids you love them. Honestly you may be the only one who shows love in a positive way. Not always, but there will be more than you know who need to hear that. #FormativeChat
She dropped it today in #4OCFpln I believe, Tim. If she drops it here too, I'll grab it here. I didn't get a chance to watch it yet but am intrigued. ;) #formativechat
Many thanks @EMercedLearning and @Rdene915 this topic is one of my passions! Thank you for providing the questions and forum for educators to share their thoughts. #FormativeChat
Thanks for joining our weekly #formativechat everyone! Special shout-out to @Rdene915 for recruiting so many amazing moderators! Stay warm out there :)
I will invite the great and powerful @rickwormeli2 to chime in on this - but I might gently push back to say that the grades are an indicator of what Ss know, not how they behave and to conflate behavior with knowing could be misleading. #formativechat
In reply to
@vendi55, @EMercedLearning, @rickwormeli2, @rickwormeli2
Definitely a big focus in our classroom. That and allowing them to provide feedback on how I am doing to personalize the experience and help them achieve their goals. Thanks for the great conversation tonight! #formativechat
Absolutely. We use standards based and bc of that my whole view of grading is different. We are always moving toward mastery. I need assessments to see where Ss need more support. From their I can meet their needs toward an end goal. #FormativeChat
I think the difference is in the whole point of the assessment. Assessment should be done to see how I can better help a S get to mastery. If the deficit is in the content mastery that is where my instruction needs to focus (pt1) #FormativeChat
If the deficit lies within an SEL domain then no amount of focused content instruction will help the S reach mastery. We need to separate the two in order to address where we need to instruct (pt 2) #FormativeChat

I have a YouTube channel on #ditchtheclips and I used to host a chat. I'm going to resurrect that once I can get back into the swing of things! #FormativeChat
Mine is 3 too! I had to put her to sleep mintues before we started. I like the rush of not knowing if the preschooler will yell for me while I'm trying to moderate! #FormativeChat
Bleh! #ditchtheclips
If assessment is supposed to provide Ts with an outline of what supports and reteaching needs to take place how does this method help in that? #FormativeChat
Welcome Everyone! Tell who you are, where you are from, and how you are FEELING about this school year?
Don't forget to use #FormativeChat in your response and we will be using Q1/A1 format.
A1 I like to have a 1 on 1 conversation w the Ss. If they can fluently & cohesively discuss the topic it says so much about their “mastery” Give options for them to shine! #FormativeChat
Q1- How are you combating the tendency to assess content skills while looking through the lens of social-emotional and work study habits? #FormativeChat
A2: Yes. All of these things work hand in hand and there really aren’t any charts or assessments or “incentives” that measure these things. Know your students & you will know all things SEL #FormativeChat
A3 Talk to them. Set goals WITH them. Monitor through open conversation & “real talk” Let them be a partner on their journey to success. #FormativeChat
