CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Sorry to miss #CatholicEdChat again! My daughter just finished her first full week of pre-K 4 which of course means now she has a raging fever. Will catch up later!!!
A2 With @room113SMM when these issues come up, I get very quiet and serious. They know we will be talking about something important. 3rd graders are empathetic and our theme of #BeKind is thoughtfully shared by them. #CatholicEdchat
A2: I think you need to provide a safe environment for them to discuss and answer their questions age appropriately. Provide them an answer that doesn't go beyond what they are mature enough to handle is important. #CatholicEdChat
Yes! The littles really appreciate that we do talk with them about these topics. Some may say that they don't understand, but they do know that something is important and feel they want to share what they know and how to process this. #CatholicEdChat
A2, Listening is so important. We need to let Ss share there feelings and respond to their needs. There are so many picture books that can help facilitate these hard conversations #CatholicEdChat
The best way to teach young people not to hate is to sweat the small stuff. Don’t wait for major occurrences before you start to address it. #CatholicEdChat
A3 Many digital citizenship curriculums address hate speech explicitly. Literature and social studies provide so many entry points for conversations about bias and prejudice too #CatholicEdChat@NCEATALK
A3: We have made a concious effort to examine our own bias and beliefs as a staff. We are having corageous conversations during PLC book clubs using books like Small Great Things, The Hate You Give, Waking Up White, etc. #CatholicEdChat
A3 for 3rd graders prejudice comes up when talking about MLK. I show a video of when MLK was a little boy and his white neighbor boy friend was told not to play ball with him any more. That really impacts my students. #CatholicEdchat
Using examples of life experiences they can relate to is a great entry point. That is why so many people teach the Diary of Ann Frank. She is a young girl, worrying about young girl things in a time of great hatred and fear.
A4 I love the book Front Desk @kellyyanghk author I have been recommending it to so many Ts. Really handles stereotypes beautifully. main character is strong, 10 yr old female #CatholicEdchat#NCEATALK
A4 Good morning all. Great topic. Would love to pass on your resources to our Ts in @oakdiocese we create a culture in our schools that are bias free as well. #CatholicEdChat
Sorry #CatholicEdChat, heading to my daughter’s “mum sale” fundraiser for their class trip to #MarchforLife2019 I’ll catch up later today. Thx @adkopp76 for leading the conversation .
One of my #studentteachers just read “Do Unto Otters” about an otter family moving into a rabbit neighborhood...and the #GoldenRule.😊
Will check this one out too!

Truly mean every word! Front Desk is an amazing book and I intend to keep recommending until every Catholic school in Baltimore is using it in our classrooms! I really do quote Mia! Thank you. 👍🏻💕#CatholicEdChat#NCEATALK
A5 If you are interested in learning more about the @weare1day movement and how to join, @NCEATALK and @NCCLonline recorded this webinar explaining the event, resources and how to participate as an individual, school, parish or organization https://t.co/2wJmmSSkTg#CatholicEdChat
A5 Our parish sponsors several refugee families. Being able to meet and talk with these families is a wonderful opportunity for our school/parish. #CatholicEdchat
Yes, love @pernilleripp as a resource! Her blogs are amazing and frequently refer Ts to her book lists. Love that she uses and promote picture books for all ages. I couldn’t agree more! #CatholicEdChat#NCEATALK

A6 Using Catholic Social Teaching really helps to get down to the basics of the issues. Using the words hatred and prejudice are so broad. #CatholicEdchat
A6 Messaging and witnessing love for all and the dignity of all people is the foundation for fighting hatred. The Church has so much rich content to teach these lessons, but us walking the walk is so important to making the lessons real. #CatholicEdChat@NCEATALK@NCCLonline
#catholicedchat A5A6- teach that we are a WORLDWIDE church! We have so many chances to reach out and help others in our faith. Partner with a Catholic school in a developing country. Skype with them of possible. Many possibilities to see diversity in them.
I don't read much MG anymore but just finished @kellyyanghk Front Desk. Wonderful perspective on the challenges of the immigrant experience in a genuinely fun, engaging read from an own voice author. Highly recommend. gr4+ #kidlit
