A1 Differentiation means knowing our students, knowing their needs (SEL + academic) and designing personalized learning opportunities for them. To do this, we must invest time learning about what makes our Ss tick! #MTedchat
A1 Differentiation involves designing lessons or activities that meet the needs of Ss instead of expecting Ss to just meet the needs of the activities. #MTedchat
Not sure I've seen it, but it sounds great. I'm a firm believer in this. It's all about relationships. And making learning relatable for our Ss, right?! #MTedchat

Exactly! If our lesson design includes opportunities for #voiceandchoice, we are likely to be meeting many needs at once. And further personalization can go from there. Hello, #hyperdocs! #MTedchat
A2: Oh gosh I think the needs beyond aptitude and achievement are the most important ones. The Social Emotional needs of our students influence so much #MTedchat
I love how we're all on the same page. So many of our responses revolve around *knowing* our students. So important! @AmandaRapstad@NVradenburg#MTedchat

#MTedchat Hey there everyone- Eric Fisher here, Hawthorne Elementary in Bozeman- HE teacher --- A1: To me, differentiation is providing the same material with enough of a variety that all learners have the opportunity for understanding.
A2 A student’s mental and emotional health MUST be at the top of the list, otherwise all the academics in the world just bounce off or float over them; we have to look out for those little humans (not just the little learners)! #MTedchat
A2: Feeling comfortable and safe at school. Well fed and well rested at home and then well respected at school leads to a confident student ready for the learning day! #MTedchat
I am not sure if there is much more effective support than a caring teacher that listens. We do have Family School Liaison Councillors that try to bridge that gap though. But again, kids just need people to attentively listen. #MTedchat

Agree. I don’t even think about teaching content until I’ve spent a good chunk of time really getting to know my students. It’s so fascinating the things you’ll learn too. #mtedchat

Couldn't agree more. 100%. Some schools in the states use foundational school-wide SEL resources, as well, to support Ts, implement common language, etc. #MTedchat

I think another really excellent investment is in getting to know the families as soon as possible, too. It took me years to learn it; I wish I had not been so intimidated early in my career! #MTedchat
A3: technology is an amazing tool to meet needs and check pulses...but I'm talking to #MTedchat so you know that. Grouping is important to ensure confidence is kept!

A3. I encourage all staff to be creative. Find ways that work. I support most ideas they have. We aren’t afraid to fail. I’ve done s lot of it lately 😑 #MTedchat
A3 have a S centered/S run classroom. I’ve trained my students to basically run the room without me so that I can pull students and groups as I need to. Following regular procedures and protocols that I can turn over to S means I have more time with individuals #MTedchat
Agreed, Ann. I was lucky to learn from a colleague early on to consider Parents as Partners. I asked families to complete a questionnaire with their child to learn more about needs, hopes, dreams, etc. #MTedchat

A3: Planning activities that allow me to work with individuals not only on skills and strategies but to gauge their day and give them a chance to check in and voice any concerns, questions, or celebrations! #mtedchat

A4. Wow. Great q. It helps that staff believe this. For students it’s powerful to just be able to try and get better. Each day week month I have chances to get better at all they do #MTedchat
A4: have to find ways to get kids engaged and connected to the learning. Data/learning chats to help them feel empowered to lead their learning, set goals and learning objectives, track them, etc. #mtedchat
Great story! Yes, such a small world. I reconnected with a childhood camp friend @rlfreedm during a #ditchbook chat a while back. She's in MA. Love how @twitter brings us all together! #MTedchat
A4 Growth mindset is the very foundation of teaching diverse learners. Every situation in teaching is like a puzzle, and must be approached with the attitude that “I can figure this out!” #mtedchat
YEAH!! So pumped for you–and for the @breakoutEDU folks *and* Ts and Ss who will benefit because of your work!! Would love to see this catch on in #BSD7chat#MTedchat

A4 We have to help our Ss develop a growth mindset about anything they pursue. It will open doors for them for a lifetime. Appropriate for ALL students–and grown-ups! #MTedchat
#MTedchat A4 I think you need to be willing to think outside the box to find accommodations or strategies that work for diff S. You have to be well versed in all types of learning strategies not just the ones that work for you. Find S passion and develop the learning around that

Maybe we can collab on making some breakouts that integrate specific Bozeman content/goals. It can't feel like anything "extra" right now. Ya know? #platesbeFULL#MTedchat
Love the #mindfulness that is impacting schools these days. Important to help build our Ss' toolboxes with ways to react more positively and make good choices (re: behavior). #MTedchat
A5 Was recently in a room with one of the “spiciest” classes I have EVER worked with; they had a tough time even getting along🤦🏻♀️ The dear teacher and I just stuck with our growth mindsets and persevered. Later, I got a whole stack of these! 😍#MTedchat
A5 All of my students are engaged in reading every day and have gotten so great at talking about the strategies they use as readers. ALL of them made progress on their reading goals this quarter and have been able to articulate their future goals to me #MTedchat
A5 using @jcorippo 8 parts has been another win these last couple weeks. Easy to differentiate because I give sample word lists that kids can choose from but S are getting more creative. And they LOVE it and beg for more! #MTedchat
A5 Echoing @NVradenburg's response >> readers' and writers' workshop was it for me, too. The choice of text is powerful for Ss and allows Ts to confer 1:1 or work with small groups. A win for everyone. #MTedchat
A5: The Coach Selection day of #SportEducation - kids are selfless in nominating peers they think would be a good coach. Then those nominees stand up and give an impromptu speech of why they feel they would make a quality coach. Public speaking & so much confidence #MTedchat
