Hi Everyone! I'm Barbara from Oakland, CA. I'm co-hosting the #rethink_learning chat - host of my podcast and excited that you are here today to discuss @divergentEDU. Let's get creative together!!
A1: Divergent thinking means to me is about being creative and having the ability to come up with new, original, unique solutions to problems or ideas. Divergent thinking generates energy for change. #rethink_learning#DivergentEDU What about you?
A1: Divergent thinking is exploring all possible solutions to solving a problem. It allows for creativity to be demonstrated as the focus is not on finding the "correct" solution. #rethink_learning#divergentedu
Hi - joining #rethink_learning for the 1st time from Perth, Australia. It’s summer holidays here so I have a chance to catch some chats I would normally be working during. As a science & digital tech specialist I love to get my Ss to look differently at the world! #divergentEDU

#rethink_learning A1 #DivergentEDU is an educator who finds ways to break down the walls to reach students & other teachers! It's about taking necessary risks, reflection, & sharing with others!
A1: Everyone views/experiences the world in different ways and this connects to how we learn. Divergent learners may need different pathways to achieve the same goals. #rethink_learning
A1: I find mind maps work really well for me to start brainstorming and thinking of different ideas - one leads to another, which leads to another.... #rethink_learning
A1 Divergent thinking is being open to possibilities beyond the obvious or acceptable, and drawing connections among disparate elements in new and novel ways. #rethink_learning#DivergentEDU

A1: To me, divergent thinking is thinking “out of the box”, realising that there isn’t always one solution (or even A solution) & also that everyone views things differently through their own lens. It’s inspiring curiosity & wonder while learning #rethink_learning#divergentEDU

A1: Divergent Thinking reminds me of brainstorming, only better. It's taking a topic and trying to deconstruct it, reconstruct it, and look at it in as many ways possible. It's trying to get the Complete Picture of something. #rethink_learning
A1: Divergent thinking means to think outside the box. Embracing your differences as strengths & taking risks. Be curious! #rethink_learning#divergentEDU
A great answer! And this allows Ss to take ownership of the learning when they can see that their perspective/viewpoint is valued #rethink_learning#DivergentEDU
A2: Innovative and divergent thought are similar as both focus on finding new solutions. Both are dependent on an individual's knowledge and experiences as it shapes their ability to think in different ways. #rethink_learning#divergentedu
A2: Innovation is a combination of divergent thinking which is more about free thinking and generating ideas and convergent thinking which is about going deeper more like prototyping. https://t.co/Brgkpx5yTV#rethink_learning#DivergentEDU
For Q2 when I was writing #Divergentedu I tried to think about the difference between divergence and innovation. We often describe them as being the same. So if I asked you the difference what would you say? #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning#DivergentEDU A2 Could it be that divergent is more personal for the learner and thinker? Innovation could embrace the larger audience but divergent is the avenue the individual uses to get to the innovative process.
Thanks @froehlich for pushing my thinking. I had to look up ideas about the difference and it made it clearer. #rethink_learning#divergentEDU They are not the same.

A2: Innovation to me includes connections to both divergent and convergent thinking. It brings the two together to support all learners. While no less important, divergent thinking may not work for all learners? #rethink_learning
A2: I haven’t thought about this much before, but maybe divergent thinking leads to innovation. Different ways of thinking leading to different ways of doing... Innovation requires thinking differently + a lot of stickability... #rethink_learning#DivergentEDU

A2: This is thought provoking. I'm not really sure of my answer. Divergent thinking can take any direction, while innovative thinking is more a thought process with a clear direction? #rethink_learning#divergentEDU
The world needs both kinds of people, though. Can you imagine what it would be like if nobody ever came to a solution for problems? #rethink_learning#divergentEDU

I am incredibly glad for your answer - thank you. I am learning lots... Innovation is not all about ‘new ways’, but rather building on what has been done well before... #rethink_learning#DivergentEDU
A3: As an elementary SPED teacher, divergent thinking can be applied in the classroom through play activities. I use our school's early childhood Makerspace to pose simple challenges for my students to think of solutions through play. #rethink_learning#divergentedu#SpEd
Love this because many times people go with "divergent good, convergent bad" but I think there is a time and place for both! #divergentEDU#rethink_learning
A3: curriculum tells us what to teach not how to teach it - provide Ss with a variety of ideas and open ended questions & problems to explore - no one right answer but lots of answers and solutions. Start by integrating global issues & asking what Qs they have #rethink_learning
A3: I think student voice and student choice would be great places to start. Focusing more on the process of learning and less on the end result would be a big part of what I would do to engage my students. #rethink_learning#DivergentEDU
Yes! So true. I think this applies to most things in education (and life)... There is a balance required. Too much of anything can make it no longer a good thing... #rethink_learning#DivergentEDU
A3: start off by a simple exercise - give them an everyday object and ask them how many different used they can come up with or give them a bunch of materials and ask them to build something. #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning#DivergentEDU A3 as educators, we are seeing so many kinds of students with different needs, we have to be divergent in finding ways to reach them, & also we are leading & teaching by example. We open their worlds in new ways when we resist one-way thinking.
A3: Divergent thinking can lead to divergent teaching by fostering a student-led classroom, encouraging students to ask questions & explore all possible answers. Support deep thinking and understanding, not just surface level. #rethink_learning#divergentEDU

A3: By letting students take ownership of their learning. By using inquiry based or problem based or phenomenon based learning so students can explore and discover on their own. And MakerSpaces. Lots and lots of MakerSpaces. #rethink_learning
Thank you to everyone who used divergent thinking today especially our guest host @froehlichm - check out her Book Study on Divergent EDU https://t.co/oIgERzhBRQ
Hope you join @raspberryberet2 & me ( in 3 weeks)
Mon., Jan. 7, 2019 for the next #rethink_learning chat. Topic TBA
To me, the most important part of this definition is the challenging assumptions and biases and limitations. That is what differentiates innovation and divergent thinking in my eye. #rethink_learning#divergentedu
A3: In science, adopting a STEM/design thinking/inquiry approach to learning allows Ss to apply what they know to authentic problems that they’re interested in. Also Ss get to choose ‘how’ to show what they know & how to present this to the world #rethink_learning#DivergentEDU
I like to part about challenging our assumptions and identifying limitations to our teaching - this is important to create the best learning env for students that we can. We all need to take risks, learn from failings and become better. #rethink_learning#divergentEDU
That's my favorite part too. I developed that from the psychological definition of divergence. It seemed to fit so well :) #rethink_learning#divergentedu
Thank you @bbray27 and @froehlichm for tonight's chat! Excellent questions on a timely and relevant topic - fantastic! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! #rethink_learning
Thanks for the chat! If you’re looking to exercise your divergent thinking muscles, consider creating a course on @learninate - the (brand new) social network for learning. #rethink_learning#DivergentEDU

A1: I believe divergent thinking is when you can use both sides of the brain for the lesson. Your creative/inventive side with your logical side of the brain. #rethink_learning
A2: Innovative is a part of divergent thinking. Divergent thinking it more taking all different ideas, and letting your brain think freely to form different and new ideas with concepts you already understand. At least that's what I think. #rethink_learning
A3: We can apply it to teaching by not just teaching to one student, but to all learners. Thinking of different ways to reach our students, even if it doesn't fit that typical way of teaching. If it doesn't work...then you reflect and recreate! #rethink_learning
A3: If students capture evidence, artifacts, and keep a journal as they learn, they can retrieve the appropriate evidence when they need it. They can store and retrieve resources, videos, their voice, and more they collected in an ePortfolio. #formativechat#rethink_learning
