#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

In our research strategy, we emphasise engagement *with* research as a form of research in itself.
A1. Without a doubt - 'Teach Like a Pirate' by and 'Digital Leadership' by
A1 Can I say, recently the "twitterverse" I'm not a great reader, but love learning form my "edu-tweeps" especially the crew
A1 The answer to that question is always dependent on the time. Right now, anything or anyone connected with
. Hi Leonie from Hastings NZ.A1 The Element, Teach like a Pirate The Learning Edge+more
yes, it’s one of the hazards of AR, sometimes people avoid important R aspects, like the literature!
AR cud be def as inquiry or rsrch of focused efforts by practitioners to imprve thr own practice. So what are the benefits of AR?
Hi all! Chris here from Ontario, Canada.
Rox from Melbourne. A1 Currently devouring book which is inspiring me for future events and turning learning on its head.
A1 great 2 be good, AR enables us 2 critically reflect on current practice and helps us aim to be great. Always room 4 improvement
A1. has shown what Carol Dweck's growth mindset looks like in mathematics. Both have been great influences on me
Great answe Andrew, completely agree.
It certainly creates a culture of ?ing current status quo - but only if it is actively supported & encouraged
I have been very impressed by and his model ... Coming to Australia soon too
Chris tuning in this morning from London - always good to be thinking how action research can be used effectively in schools.

I've enjoyed being involved in researchED . Grass roots meets scholarly conversation.
I also have my pretty awesome PLN who I can count on to be there for anything at pretty much any time! LOL
If you want your students to transform and strive for excellence you HAVE to do life long AR on your methods! What do you think?
A2. Research at the coalface - the people doing the work are the ones doing the hypothesising, testing & critical analysis
yes, inspiring quote, raises twin aspects of AR - 1. improvement based on reflection, 2 - addressing a problem
Teachers reclaiming their role as pedagogues - the original experts in education
A1 Now, the biggest influence is my awesome Aorere Digital PLG.
A1 Fullan, M. (2007). Change the terms for teacher learning. Journal of Staff Development, 28(3), 35.
you cant get much better - it's like a lucky dip - fro edu ideas - and getting a great win each time :-)
the key word is action. The research involves real results from real action that has taken place
There is a strong thread of a balanced, measured and professional approach to collaboration running through those points.
A2 action research is a great practitioner research model which encourages systematic thinking embedded in own context.
https://t.co/H2cNZP4qng
Fried's The Passionate Teacher resonated. I enjoyed John Hattie's books as food for thought about what is important for learning

oh I love that - a digital lucky dip!
A1 Carol Dweck "Growth Mindset" and John Hattie "Visible Thinking"
A1 - I've always been influenced by older teachers. I see value in their knowledge. Now in a PLN where all levels share knowledge
Yes!! Since I've been on Twitter much of my learning comes through my PLN - often challenge thinking! https://t.co/QCFMhI77lF
I also have my pretty awesome PLN who I can count on to be there for anything at pretty much any time! LOL
A1 I'm inspired by the work of on creativity & innovation
Action research is actively pushed here in UK, particularly within the area of and training.
Hello, friends. Joining you from New Jersey in the USA.
a1 one of the first books I read as a teaher was "55 Essentials" & adapted to my own set of guidelines
Keene (and Zimmermann), To Understand, Mosaic of Thought.
I don't think it is mandatory - but definitely advisable
A1) Primary reason to engage in AR is to help T improve, books-Teaching That Matters, Hack Learning, TLAP,
I guess a key thing about AR is that it builds on our desire for transformation, & provides a rigorous basis for what we do?
In 1990, my Maths Teacher was a legend, still regard him as a massive influence. A1
In 1990, my Maths Teacher was a legend, still regard him as a massive influence. A1
A1: Hattie, Dweck and Couros are being read/re-read at the moment.
. Agree in principle - but "lifelong" AR can get lost in translation!
..and that it is cyclical - results feed into new questions and new research etc etc https://t.co/qlxZXbj1H9
the key word is action. The research involves real results from real action that has taken place
A1: Keene (and Zimmermann), To Understand, Mosaic of Thought.
Love Hattie's work on feedback, super valuable.
great to see you online Deb, it's been a while since I have connected with you. A topic right down your alley!
great when you have a supportive community as a resource!
Seriously Brian. When do you eat and sleep?!
A1 I'm inspired by the work of on leadership, creativity & innovation
I'm inspired by the Art Costa's and those that have focused on thinking
do AR every day - we need to find a way of recognising that in a way that supports & enhances their professionalism.
Bowman & Deal. Amazing work on organisational leadership. A1
A1 Cochran-Smith, Harris, Fullan, Hargreaves, Hattie, Timperley, Feuerstein, Black and Wiliam, Mezirow, Illeris, Biesta
Yes, & works all the better the more we can identify a series of problems/challenges that focus that desire to change?
A2 - Getting results from action taking place, using that to inform what next. It's contextual & relevant https://t.co/TLrJIkX8EO
hard to look past the pupils in your class and the staff in your school as a starting point
Heard of the Research Teaching Nexus? Is it just a HE thing? How will it work in the K-12 space? 4 more https://t.co/kJbEeMjLP2
Hello to all of my amazing educator friends in ! Thanks for the shout outs and the support! https://t.co/zgA1NjhQW9
A1 ‘The Hike Book’ by Jack Cox pub 1960 Mr Cox had experiences with my main teaching area for 25yrs
a2 AR is a structured investigative and reflective practice aimed at finding insights into improving practice and education.
A2: AR=focused effort on reflecting upon & analyzing our current practice-make necessary adjustments to increase S performance
If only politicians got that memo! https://t.co/ECdbwqpEcF
Teachers reclaiming their role as pedagogues - the original experts in education
AR is reflection on a chosen area of practice. We need to do it because there are more answers then what's on the surface
.A2.Impt to see impact of Teaching & learning. Teaching as Inquiry -"Where to next?" What is the best we can do?
A2: Action Research is embedding inquiry in daily activity to analyse actions and determine future directions
action learning or action research?
A2 - I think AR brings what we 'do' do in line with what we 'should' do.
A1 Robert Marzano. Dylan Williams.
Really hoping for a big chat tonight https://t.co/HhTyExuJZa
Such a wonderful chat, love to learn from and my friends 😊
But when will we see teachers who don't just see the need to improve but also innovate?
A2 Localised project-based investigation and it matters because it involves our community. the key stakeholders!
The more teachers engage in AR & publish - the louder our voice
teaching-research nexus is a higher ed concept, wd b great to cit in schools, as it would recognise teacher research
A2 it becomes more effective when it is conscious and involves collboration
I've also been rereading Freire and Noddings lately
We work with and on Research Alive!
He (Jim Wilkonson) care little for my sports ability, only for my Maths attitude and aptitude! Great q,
FOCUS AREA 3: Getting AR to work
Isn't that what is all about? https://t.co/A4qcxeFWgY
But when will we see teachers who don't just see the need to improve but also innovate?
A2 To me AR is just good teaching formalised. Isn't the cycle what we do anyway? Or what we should do
A2. Grass root research conducted by the teacher taking a big idea and looking at it through the lens of the school situation, yes
my question does it always have to formally written to be "research" ? Hoping to find out more tonight
- to enhance connections between , policy and practice.
A2.2: Why bother with AR? It formalises the reflective process with goals, objectives, reviews, retrospectives and recommendations
A2-AR can provide a platform for teacher collaboration around teaching practices that have a strong impact on student achievement
I like the way you put this Rachel. AR also helps us to determine what the "should" do it! https://t.co/ZtiOufOXvK
A2 - I think AR brings what we 'do' do in line with what we 'should' do.
A3 Because it works from the end-user back and for this benefit if done correctly,
A3 Because it works from the end-user back and for this benefit if done correctly,
Voices of have led the conversations from the beginning!
A2 Learning by doing- put something into practice and measure the impact. Practice becomes informed by real results
Hi everyone from glorious
A1 also by Jack Cox ‘The Outdoor Book’ pub 1954 here he talks about the leader being ‘elastic’ ability to change plans
A2: Action research informs our practice. When it's closely tied to our work in the classroom, it can lead to improvement.
It is awesome to see educators take on and evaluate, alter their thinking and teaching practices. Thanks
A1 my own research & work is in online and blended learning I'm into - important to take q'ing approach 2 tech
Thanks Stuart, Always good to follow inspirational and accessible educators
. Depends who does it & why. Govt no!
That’s what the AR model is for - connecting the desire to tangible action to rigorous research
A3 AR, I think, both quant and qual our practice and ways of improving it.
AR implies a strong relationship between those in the action being strongly supported by those with the 'R' experience
We need to see more AR supported in Teacher Prep courses & having it acknowledged as meaningful PD
Nice response. Nee to stay focused on the practice though over the theory IMO. A2
A2 looking in a focused way at aspects of practice and linking to research & data to identify poss improvements. School based
A rich and inspiring take on action research. https://t.co/h1JduI08ID
A1- teachers who are passionate about teaching inspire me to be a better teacher everyday
Very excited to be presenting at Practical Pedagogies!! Will be talking about some of my AR in flipping https://t.co/GQb5403ubd
A2 AR provides us with new info and understanding to improve or enhance our edu practice
A2: Because bothering means we do more of what worksg. 'Bright spot' thinking. Heath bros. Jerry Sternin. Do more of what works.
And presumably when students & the broader community are part of that collaboration?
Agree that teachers are researchers. Look at
I use it as the foundation for every lesson. Perhaps most of us do; just using different lingo
A3 AR becomes specific to your Ss and what works for them, your practice becomes evidence based
Great point, can be effective in or out of school. So rarely done outside though!
A2 - I think it is like work integrated learning and discovery through doing. And by measuring impact we can research.
There is much great AR out there, that it depends on which facet of education is your current focus.
This is awesome . is on another winner here
A1- Blooms and Gardner research formulates the structure for our activity matrix
A2: AR is done by professionals interested in improving practice by being reflective
Action research is a process, and a worthwhile one at that! Innovation is both a mindset and a culture
A2 - effective AR fosters collaboration, reflection and improved pedagogy = increased outcomes
I wouldn't think so as long as it leads to change in practice or a reflection why practice hasn't changed. https://t.co/kz10unavXN
my question does it always have to formally written to be "research" ? Hoping to find out more tonight
A2 - for me, AR allows collaboration and discussion w/ all stakeholders to identify area of need. Doing one now w/ ATSI students
A2 I'm hoping to learn more tonight? If its about questioning and reflecting on practice/pedagogy - but this isn't research??
And shared with validity too. A3
And shared with validity too. A3
A3. 1 would hope that AR is developed with the end goal of improving T&L - so need to include Ss in the process
Link between research, policy & practice is arguably one of the most important strategic challenges facing teaching this century.
A2 AR improves Ss learning outcomes, promotes learning communities & professional dialogue with purpose https://t.co/fVfqzgyV3v
yes! Good to see you, too, Brian. Although I am drowning in journal article writing!
A3: AR allows us to analyze our current practice & make adjustments as needed. Continual process research-adjust-reflect repeat!
A2 AR improves Ss learning outcomes, promotes learning communities & professional dialogue with purpose
I guess AR also brings in the need to link your reflective practice to some form of evaluated innovation?
have used for teaching and learning but funnily enough not directly for AR!
Agreed - I think they go nicely together.
Hi from Melbourne. A1 professional capital and Michael Fullan
Ss should always be part of the process they need to know why we are doing things in a particular way - metacognition
Great point Kelly, often AR focus in not on the students. A3
A2) AR is an empowering experience, relevant to Ts, helps Ts be more effective in their teaching & the develop. of their students
Could someone kindly RT the Qs?
Stuart - what if you can combine both - ie. Maths 'N' Movement. https://t.co/5DtpiJkcQq
He (Jim Wilkonson) care little for my sports ability, only for my Maths attitude and aptitude! Great q,
A3: AR is so important because it enables us to identify variables and test them in a scientific manner. Requires careful thought.
Yes - once we move past merely anecdotal suggestions, we can adopt evidence-based best practice.
A2:AR=focused effort on reflecting upon & analyzing our current practice-make necessary adjustments to increase S performance
Could you add Maria Montessori to that list?
Hope you are better organized than Wally https://t.co/zVkVwebMIo Got some hints and resources for good AR implementation?
A3 AR MUST include Ss in the process from the outset
hey good question :-) I suppose bottom line is it has to have some articulated, tangible shape?so others can ‘get’ it?
task analysis and what are the parts that you are focusing on...
Great point. He used sport as a learning context even though he hated sport. Made me get it though!
This is what I want to find out - this is AR formally - can you do it informally?
A3 - AR with data leads to measured outcomes - knowing the impact of our changes to practice
Does Action Research give teachers the 'bite' to control the pedagogy they roll out in their classrooms? https://t.co/cOLLccfZID
.A3 AR impt so that we can see the impact of our methods what is meaningful, what we need to change , where to next? Match S needs
I agree, also makes the implementations more durable as well.
A2- trialling & piloting new ways, pedagogies, methodologies. Drives innovation & creativity using real life scenarios
A3 AR is vital to ensure that educators can adapt and change with the times just as we expect our students to
I think it definitely has the potential to bite :)
I go a little overboard with my feedback forms with my Ss, but I'm there for them, not for me!!
A2 World's best pre-schools in see AR as vital-like a river flowing rather than teachers one side & kids the other
Love it! I'm laughing right now-I could tell you were a science gal before I even looked at your profile!
Yes! I see it as researching ways to become better at your practice, focusing on the how
Like very much! There needs to be a culture of learning for AR https://t.co/wUfFwhGd7I
Hi from Melbourne. A1 professional capital and Michael Fullan
Agree getting a bit lost here too
A3 - Methods for exactly what? Pass tests, build knowledge, get results or support the growth of young adults?
Great point, otherwise buy-in from Ts very little IMO.
A3: Its where we take what we learn and apply to our context. All schools are different. 'Out of the box' solutions rarely work.
A3: The main emphasis is improved learning outcomes for students, so it is important to include all factors that will be affected.
yes research can only tell us what's been found; we need to iterate from our own contexts.
Greetings, All! Amy from Michigan, USA. I teach middle school band. What's the current question?
A3 enquiry approach that is focused on your classroom practice & informed by data & research can lead to insights for improvement
So yr in the perfect context for AR? You can identify problems, read the literature, devise action strategies, evaluate
I think there needs to be some formality to the process to be true AR
It helps you gather relevant data that in turn allows you to measure impact and success of methods
My best advice is to have measurable non-biased Qs and a really detailed timeline 2 follow
hi! How's the yellow brick road of your research?
FOCUS AREA 4: Balancing the load. Getting the need for AR to balance with your teaching load https://t.co/qg2o4piTys
hmm true. I suppose it's really deepening what we're doing
A3- AR helps teachers to be the best they can be for their students.
A3 Because also it can be role-modelled and used by students too!
Mathods as in the various strategies Ts use to present their work and engage students https://t.co/HMlst4mE8e
A3 - Methods for exactly what? Pass tests, build knowledge, get results or support the growth of young adults?
so how "detailed/formal" does the "research" have to be?
I think the answer is Yes to everything you mentioned Greg. AR can be applicable to just about anything.
.... a culture of learning..... And thinking.... And reflection..... And then DOING
.Can do if done effectively target orientated to Ss. Need to know what to do and why, not just same old, indiv S needs 2
If conducted systematically and with tools that measure impact, AR can be terribly powerful and agent for change
Evidence of a positive outcome is all you need. A small gain is always something
When u intro new pedagogy & I did a lot at Uni u need at some point to go from think to know it will brng change AR is for proving
this is where I feel there must be strong relationships with researchers until process learnt
AR is so important because it empowers the voices of all learners, including teachers, who are closest to teaching and learning.
AR creates the constant learning cycle for Ss and Ts
A3 AR requires colleagues to have conversations, to dissect and seek understanding of current reality ~ this prior to change
Totally agree https://t.co/0Mwd5MiLbs
I think the answer is Yes to everything you mentioned Greg. AR can be applicable to just about anything.
Great q, the more formal, the less immediate the findings but often more durable under audit. Context?
Anyone got a great story of best practice of an AR project Any links?
I think you need to add a culture of documenting to that list
Agree-contexts are so different. Helps direct & guide but not applicable without considering adaptation
A4: I've got nothing - Looking to learn, get ideas!!
A3 but if it is then we can measure what worked compared to with previous activity with Ss
to me informal is just good t&l. ideally AR is more - adding to the evidence base /research community
I am looking forward to responses here
A3 It's tracking progress; it's taking a child from one place to the next & that's what we as educators
A1: etc...PLN and peers all influence my teaching along with professional reading.
Another good challenging question! Formality doesn’t matter maybe, but clarity and rigour of thinking do?
A3a) Ts have evidence work has made a real difference in their students' lives, their efforts make it seem worthwhile.
Teacher led Action Research lets educators find the best way to effectively I pact on their students https://t.co/umhAijqC3k
I think having it recognized as valid PD - will help balance workload w/ non-contact time
is now trending in USA, ranking 20
A3 - 1/2 to get AR to work - need open-mindedness & receptiveness to change!also need commitment & willingness 2 move forward
A2 AR gives Tchrs scaffold to explore problem of practice using data to influence change for good of Ss https://t.co/wQnAJgou1J
. When something can be described in context, it can have impact - in a way that helps to share learning.
Well put Denice and it leaves a trail that can be followed or modified for other learners or teachers.
of course!! Using AR for new pedagogies and tech provides evidence to get others on board, especially when it works
exactly. & trust educators to know their own contexts best. Research informs.
Describe ur balance? is ur resrch as important as ur tching? Shud it be?
Hi Charlotte in Melb late to having a quick skim of tweets so far - lots of interesting comments & ideas
A3 2/2 - for AR to work also need a structure that supports change
A3b) Seeing students grow & learn is probably the greatest joy educators can experience
I hope that as professionals, we consider all of these factors through what we take & share from AR
A4: In our grad leadership program Ss complete leadership growth projects. This is AR tied to classroom practice or school needs.
When u into new pedagogy & I have a lot u need to support the change with u know & not just u think AR is the tool to prove it
Q3: Action Research- Anything that encourages teachers to be innovative & look critically at what actually works seems good to me!
I like the point you make here. Something the team I am working with may need to consider
I think for AR to be authentic it needs to be intertwined into your teaching - not something separate...
Crucial question there. I would say that ‘bite’ comes from clarity, rigour, and ability to communicate results clearly
Exactly! This would allow everyone to understand the need for change as they wld identify the gaps in the t&L.
A3: Determining impact often seems elusive/missed...but 'knowing thy impact' helps us avoid 'same old, same old' & puts Ss first.
I don't think they have to be mutually exclusive, IMO they go hand in hand with each other!
I'm a fan of AR but see it could be applied more broadly to skills & dispositions-not just stretching tests results
A2 AR - effective way to improve Ss learning,T practice & reflect on learning for all in school community = data informed change!
I would suggest it would be at least 30% Tching 70% - Equally as important IMO
A4. Start the way all good science does: with an idea worth testing, then organise the staff/sts to trial https://t.co/v4N80OIXWk
. Agreed - these processes need to support and facilitate professional conversations about learning.
True Brett, culture tends to be embedded, strategy often temporary commitment & value IMO.
so should we look forward to a culture of AR developing in our school systems?
ur correct about communicating results
it's great to have so many PhD offshoots but the work/ writing needs time.
A3: AR assists when an iterative process is used - repeat, increase performance, repeat, tweek, repeat analyse gains
Does resrch lead tching, drive tchr dev and curriculum dev? How?
. If content is king, context is queen.
Q4 we have school based scaffold as all Ts must complete AR as part of a professional learning team during the year
Agreed. I don't think it should be there to support test result. Would be a good alternative 2 test results tho
A marriage when one can't live without the other. LOL
A4 I don't know the 'formal' model, but researching grade-less curriculum at the moment. Figure may as well go hard or go home
Interesting point. I believe that you take the most pressing area of need and focus your AR energy there https://t.co/ZLfu4EAX9Q
A3 - Methods for exactly what? Pass tests, build knowledge, get results or support the growth of young adults?
Ahh, "the ability to communicate results clearly" Think I just had my light bulb moment :-)
A3 Through AR we develop a forward thinking mindset with a focus on growth. The participants of AR are the ones who see results.
but don’t forget that good research also tells us about its own limitations, & future directions & generalisability?
Had no idea was still happening tonight.
A3 Measure for triangulation & anything more is overkill.
That's a great point. AR is not something I've ever been a part of, but that's not to say I'm not interested.
- Data informed change applicable to local context and specific to individual need - BRILLIANT!!!!
A3 It's learning in action; it's growth mindset on steroids https://t.co/y2Y6iKiIv0
Well put Denice and it leaves a trail that can be followed or modified for other learners or teachers.
I wouldn't say it Leads or Drives-I prefer to think it provides scaffolding-it's part of the foundation https://t.co/twd7wqU0bp
Does resrch lead tching, drive tchr dev and curriculum dev? How?
Leaping Lemurs! Does Action Research open to door to educators being innovative and trying new things? https://t.co/Nm4uV1UBIs
In what ways can u involve students in ur resrch? Running an AR project with students? How does it impact learning outcomes?
A4 keep the focus small and achievable then support and protect time for the whole process & collaborative dialogue/working
Nice share. I think so. Culture is about people and how we see and treat others, goes beyond learning.
Allan for someone who is starting where is the best place to go to find these tools
So true! It's why educators do what they do despite the odds!
A4 A school culture of AR needs to be developed - joint understanding & participation
FOCUS AREA 4: Balancing the load. Getting the need for AR to balance with your teaching load https://t.co/a9J4K8UcgO
A3 agree the purpose of AR is to avoid previous errors & integrate Ss within the process
I believe AR should do all those things. Again it's that critical reflection process.
Great point. Has to be based on context and needs of the moment. Otherwise rigidity lessens impact.

Excellent point. THIS --> https://t.co/tkMbjdrXbm
but don’t forget that good research also tells us about its own limitations, & future directions & generalisability?
agree that the focus must be small in order to be manageable
A4 don't see it as a 'thing' but as a continuous process of professional development focused on improved outcomes for all
Ideas on how to achieve this? Couldn't agree more
I agree here. Life long learners will always want to improve practice
A4: Regardless of the model, the result must always be driven by improving student learning. Has to be our go to. Always.
heard term today Ive added to my one liners “Teacherpreneur” we have to market ideas AND AR results
yes indeed, one strand of AR is very ’scientific’ in this sense - start by clearly identifying a problem/question
A4 Action research is about building a better you not repairing yourself.
If said educator is open to reading that text, I would assume yes. But are they doing so in isolation. An AR book club!
I have been doing some AR into flipping stage 6 Biology started in '15 at previous school & continuing now
Ask them, involve the students. Co-constructing their learning will ensure they are close to the AR process
I think u can also use AR more fluidly - smaller iterative improvements over time (vs rationale 4 big change)
When I did my Masters became a great fan of Vivianne Robinson Problem Based Methodology approach
When I did my Masters became a great fan of Vivianne Robinson Problem Based Methodology approach
A3 and the possibility of the findings being published & then shared
A4) When Ts make a personal commit. to collect data on their work, embarking on a process to foster contin. growth and development
Hi All Caroline joining late. Been chatting with world travelling son. 😊 Will try to pick up the thread
thank you. Those are definitely challenges; & maintaining credibility in both arenas - teaching & research.
Curriculum changes/initiatives mandated not perfect in all contexts. AR will help identify contextual issues & poss sol
Nice, this is where the need for formality is essential.
Loved checking out your Olympics page linking from your Australia tent reading tweet
I'd be keen to hear how that goes. Have you looked into Geoff Masters from ACER. He advocates for that.
Yes-I think this is critical. In Edu we too often dive head first in to new initiatives. Achievable is key https://t.co/UvYbx4yyjv
A4 keep the focus small and achievable then support and protect time for the whole process & collaborative dialogue/working
A4 should be about improving, not proving
Do you agree that technology assists AR projects? If yes thn how? If not why not?
Can someone please explain what this action research is really all about please
A3 Just wondering how many peeps have been involved in AR with an academic partner ? This project used AR https://t.co/jDBn2fE6Nn
I think the thing that concerns me about schools forcing AR is that is can lose its intended purpose/context.
A3: AR should be an integral part of teaching & learning in classrooms...listening, observing, documenting, analyzing, reflecting.
I feel like we focus too much on content not context. We must create space for data discussions to inform practice
If looking to publish and share findings, is a formal approach including ethics required?
Enable faster transfer, sharing of AR resources, findings.
Enable faster transfer, sharing of AR resources, findings.
thanks for the link will take a closer look after chat
A3 knowledge of teaching area too. Here dual professionalism may come into focus
I think it helps build psychological ownership over own learning journey & builds trust in having their voice heard
thank you. Not easy but I've found that doing teaching & research concurrently can be transformational.
We recently used AR to learn more about a new 1:1 initiative. Turned out to be an effective way to grow innovation.
Had honour to teach in China, They have 14 mill teachers wanting evidence of best practice to implement change amazing passion!
and enhancing teacher efficacy is a bonus!
Yes, true - my question relates to this: what about the things that can't be clearly measured? https://t.co/UfQLu2GXdo
A4 When completing my M.Ed. I studying Research Methods. I like Mixed Methods.
A5 without tech, conducting AR in teams across multiple campuses would be very hard
As much as we are talking about AR from the Ts perspective Ss can offer suggestions we may not have identified - include them
Great minds... - follow the thread around this tweet: https://t.co/COtmA8RgnH
. If content is king, context is queen.
A4 Agree, George ~ Professor Tony Bryk terms this 'getting better at getting better'
It depends. I've done both and worked with Uni's to do so
Or across global contexts even. A5
I think it would really depend on the project but the use of technology for collaboration/discussion would enhance it
more reason for publication of coal-front findings??
U want to help tchrs change go to change with AR evidence. They will love you
Ethics is always required IMO for any research including AR.
A5: Tech can share the results/message etc fast, and allow for almost instantaneous feedback. It connects to AR models out there.
There must be a voluntary aspect for AR - you can't force people to do it https://t.co/1ymNoaWdHg
I think the thing that concerns me about schools forcing AR is that is can lose its intended purpose/context.
And, IMO, it can be both formal & informal. There is value in both. https://t.co/95suY0sy2L
A3: AR should be an integral part of teaching & learning in classrooms...listening, observing, documenting, analyzing, reflecting.
No! Thanks though, will look into that :)
Absolutely. All learning is great. but if my learning does not lead to student learning, then I ask 'why'? https://t.co/hAKOzbHiMO
and enhancing teacher efficacy is a bonus!
opp to create a national database here . I think that the uni sector would be interested
A3 agree & I was lucky to have one such area published by in their ‘Horizons’ mag
a nice nuancing of the perspective here, thx I might suggest it’s about building a demonstrably better us
I would hope so. We should be doing it all the time "informally" - its formalising that turns it into AR
Chat is hard to follow tonight. It seems we have multiple conversations happening.
You would hope so, but upon hearing that schools have their staff doing AR as an expectation… Defeats the purpose.
In NZ, schools particularly isolated, small ones would love the sharing and collaboration.
Its about you doing PD not going to PD
Frm : What motivates teachers to use technology in higher level ways with students?
A4 When completing my M.Ed. I studied Research Methods. I like Mixed Methods.
In Ireland, teachers are teaching peers how to use ICT to support reflective and enhanced practice.
Our profession & peers need to be more aware of AR & more accepting of it as a valid measurement tool of practice
A5) Ts need to recognize the importance of developing tech skills in students so they will be prepared to enter workforce
A4 1/2 don't do it alone. Create an AR community. Explore a problem/area of practice. Observe. Collect & triangulate data...
You make an excellent point - enhancing student learning is our ultimate goal
A4- I'm with on this. AR is a form of reflective practise with the goal of ongoing improvement of student learning
I think action research adds a level of systematisation to innovation.
when things can't be clearly measured (do you mean quantitative data?) qualitative data can still inform
Great point-As educators we know that forcing mandates often leads to rebellion-even if the idea is worthy
Context is everything & yet covering curriculum becomes key to playing game of school
for publication and sharing ethics clearance is required, but it’s best to get it anytime you are researching people
Providing time 5 teachers to meet, plan, deliver & evaluate learning, is best form@of AR, AND, no ethics approval required
done well, AR empowers Ts, challenges status quo, improves student learning outcomes https://t.co/xGV8iEG0SO
Leaping Lemurs! Does Action Research open to door to educators being innovative and trying new things? https://t.co/Nm4uV1UBIs
So true. Also the tech skills to have a direct correlation to real world skills.
Ed leaders who understand the impact of teachers will make allowances for staff to have necessary time for conducting AR
A4 2/2 use triangulated data 2 move forward & create plan. Cyclical movement- keep process going.constantly evaluate
. Relationships; confidence; relevance; ownership; impact.
Q4: as tertiary educator, have access to learning analytics for all online T&L interfaces.
Frm : SAMR aligned with common apps help researchers ID where teachers are. What do you think?
Many schools & districts require Ethics to be done regardless - think of it as a risk assessment
Totally agree. Teachers need to be given time and support to engage in the process properly https://t.co/0w1nZMTV5t
Providing time 5 teachers to meet, plan, deliver & evaluate learning, is best form@of AR, AND, no ethics approval required
I think so, where there's a will, there's a way!
So never 'either or' but 'both and' to move education forward
Thanks the article was ‘Land Navigation - Coaching Concepts’ Ss on helped
Digital portfolios are an excellent way to collect authentic student data. is my favorite app for this.
Yes and yet schools get on the bandwagon and lose the intended purpose. It becomes a buzz word, not a tool.
A4 Ed leaders who understand impact of teachers will make allowances for staff to have necessary time for conducting AR
.A5 Tech helps enable global learning & connections for Ts & Ss.Sharing ideas & modifying from learning.Invaluable
Absolutely! AR + tech = efficiency, collaboration, sharing, live communication
we need to work smarter not harder, in Primary content is more flexible, use pre- assessment better
A4: Co-planning, co-teaching, co-observing, co-documenting, co-reflecting, co-learning.
Twitter chats like and are a simple & powerful step forward in this area.
True- my school is going to try this next year https://t.co/LiXgse2vF9
Providing time 5 teachers to meet, plan, deliver & evaluate learning, is best form@of AR, AND, no ethics approval required
Yes, but it's dangerous. Quantitative data can be twisted; qualitative, I feel, is even more vulnerable.
So True! and is one of the top things we see high performing teams/ schools do.
The biggest challenge for initiatives like AR is work out the balance between research and teaching load https://t.co/IhU7vXmfey
Good point maybe the lead way is via social media?
yes it all depends how the app is used not what app is used.
it is what we need to provide for Ts - POD time, a common idea that they investigate, time to discuss, explore and share - goals
A5b) By embracing and integrating technology in the classroom, setting our students up for success outside of school
lots of things can’t be measured scientifically, but they can be researched rigorously: via qualitative research
You need T buy-in & that is not something you can force. Need to empower/trust/show value to them 1st.
I can tell you that I'd love access in Cairns. Sometimes very isolated by distance
Why not have the best of both worlds and embrace mixed methods AR??
A5 one of the most impactful things you can use is to film yourself teaching, then have focused professional dialogue with peers
Thats the trick and probably a whole new chat! LOL
A4 are we preparing future Ed leaders to understand and embrace AR as an integral part of our profession?
A5: Learning Analytics, learner centred self discovery of how to learn - what evidence there is to verify competencies etc
We have a lot of rural Ts in NZ where tech has re-energised their ability to connect.
A5: Tech allows us to not only gather results, but also share, ask questions, gain new ideas, or challenge our thinking.
but how can we go beyond the 140 characters and make our research have impact outside our own School
I definitely think it is something that can be taught better in teacher prep programs
So how do we move away from "playing the game of school?" We have the same struggle in US
- needs Senior Leaders to create time and space and support capacity amongst teachers
ultimately depends on purpose of AR - need to design AR carefully & use most approp meth
Best way to teach times tables for upper primary?
Thanks Gary, will do! Gosh I love chat!
AMEN!! I'm done with playing the game!
Thanks, it's probably because I'm on holiday so can think deeply for a change! LOL
Sorry, I heard "hot chocolate" & ran off... Could someone repost Q4 & 5 please?
absolutely agree George, we use in school to share good practice and look at ways to improve
FOCUS AREA 6: About the Padagogy Wheel and AR.
Yes. Well stated . And good to involve Ss in AR when appropriate & with ethics bd approval.
YEP! that's probably the biggest stumbling block, as I think we do some form of AR informally all the time.
Absolutely the research question should guide which method is utilized for data collection
Our AP is guiding staff slowly through the process. Great introduction for those less sure
- wrong to assume that all teachers have capacity and capability to engage in AR - teachers need to be supported to ..
Lead, yes, but here we recognise that regional / local hubs, virtual and real, are necessary for follow-through.
absolutely, mixed methods rules :-)
But hasn't always been the case
... supported in engaging in disciplined inquiry
agreed, it has to come from both sides
my print out of the Padagogy wheel sits next to my desk. We refer to it often when trying to decide on tools to use :)
Agree, all initiatives need support https://t.co/yikghsJN2b
- wrong to assume that all teachers have capacity and capability to engage in AR - teachers need to be supported to ..
How do u plan good AR to develop better pedagogy? Will this AR Version Padagogy Whl hlp? https://t.co/2wdikdvaWp Comments?
Vital consideration before embarking on AR project, no matter how small you feel it is https://t.co/ZrUHEhCQTQ
for publication and sharing ethics clearance is required, but it’s best to get it anytime you are researching people
As Edu's we need to be willing to do what's right 4 S's-be vocal-take a stand
Absolutely, F2F is still the best way to have robust AR and other conversations.
Yes primary context seen as easier yet in secondary seniors have to dance through hoops
Seesaw is changing our world! Set to replace paper portfolios. Parents feel connected. https://t.co/O5C6bf6wmY
Digital portfolios are an excellent way to collect authentic student data. is my favorite app for this.
I agree here. Twitter and Google suite may help shorten the divide
We need leaders with the guts to tell region where to go.
Most definitely! PLT based AR is a great way to share the load!
Depends on project and the effectiveness of the organisations VLE. So if VLE effective then answer is Yes tech can help
we listen to our Ss needs & interests to provide authentic learning opportunities
both have merits. Quan often measure the 'what' but not always or fully the 'why'
agree with the equation, just need to be mindful of info sharing with some apps due to confidentiality
A6 Oh I learnt so much at the been playing with google sheet add-ons for student feedback - autocrat & flubaroo
for mass-scale feedback with of course!
A5: Apps like Explain Everything, One Note support creative/comprehensive documentation of learning...analysis and/or portfolios.
what if teaching was research & schools were places where new knowledge was created?
A5 My students complete a review of my teaching practice every semester. This builds a better me. https://t.co/cuQ2SrpMyY
So true. Many Ts don't realise they have been doing it for years
Good point Jack and with ideally low-cost access for all.
They might be willing but not sure how to begin https://t.co/KkZhoI9uCi
- wrong to assume that all teachers have capacity and capability to engage in AR - teachers need to be supported to ..
let Ss be the agents of Change, can't argue with that
I have been using Chomp app to introduce persuasive writing prompts in a engaging and exciting way
There's an idea :) Seriously, isn't that what teaching and schools should be all about?
We need Ts&admin 2 unite-only then can system wide change occur
It's building. IMO all Ts now need to be "online" in some capacity.
and this comes from teacher training but I still feel deep knowledge of subject is also key to effective AR
We are looking to use in our team to assist with planning
Frm Using PW U can see where/if teachers change in how they use technology with students. Agree? How? Disagree? How?
I agree. Trying to get that across to counterparts who don't want to engage is hard
A6. Since getting an Apple Pencil, I've been into Notability by - brilliant for sketchnotes! https://t.co/1UAMsKLBDB
- having a researcher as part of the learning team, collecting data & collaboratively deriving recommendations 👌🏻
I try but when u have 'HSC results' looming over you it's hard
A6: Not new, but I love Google Classroom. Easy way to get info to/from Ss. Love that they can submit videos to show learning!
Vast differentiation needed!
Vast differentiation needed!
. Good question. We are going to experiment with webinar format next month.
A6) iMovie, all tools my 3rd graders greatly enjoy & are challenged by
Term 3 at my school. Trialling just that Z! Wishing it succeeds :)
both have good intentions, prob is admin o/load due 2 accountability
years and years... 28years and still learning.. that's the fun part of life
Good point. Focus on the keen ones, the laggards won't want to be left behind.
A5 - We definitely notice the impact when we have a lack of tech. Tech can make collecting data & assessments more streamlined
. Anybody can log in, and it allows for more conversations around topics.
They have as much to contribute as anyone.
Great start! Need to now get admin behind this idea-empower T's then trust them!
What is it that teachers really need?
Nothing beats a life long learner 😄
How do we ensure that the educational AR at university level ties in with best practice in schools?
Could you imagine the impact if a few of us here got together to solve an educational problem
Change starts in the classroom, system wide might take too long!
A6: , & are my go tos. Slack has brought some great conversations to our dept!
Frm If students given the reigns of how tech apps are used in the classroom, at what SAMR levels do they use them?
Nice article, admire your work !
A6 been using Explain Everything and Edmodo to create and distribute flipped content
the first step is to identify a need.
A6 Been trying to use Google Docs in a real way. Not just a traditional word document way. Peer assessment is becoming authentic
Student - teacher relationships are more important than rigor & relevance. Ss will learn if they believe Ts care about them.
.& Tech has opened way for connectns & lrng local globally
Awesome Q. I think we need 2 work closely with schools 2 ensure authentic connections between theory & prac
Sometimes we need to just "go for it"-let others"See" it happen
A6- I have been using with grade 1/2's. They have made some incredible videos
It's the same access away now!
HSC?? Sorry, I'm unfamiliar.
such an easy to use tool :) I love it! But no iPads at my new school :(
A6 used for T prof learning quest about language impairment meets VIT reg requirements & AR opportunity
A5: Technology really helps to make AR a more precise, efficient and effective process.
Looking forward to sharing with the team on Tuesday
Yes, the ticket to Uni needs to change!
'Higher School Certificate' final exam for NSW Ss uni entrance
They can be complementary. We need to enhance connections between people in research, policy and practice.
OMG! I love ... Such a useful edu tool! Ping https://t.co/4pLRH7LZLY
A6- I have been using with grade 1/2's. They have made some incredible videos
edu twitter chats have opened a whole new world of PD to me in the rural area - Connected!
Or the way we measure success needs to shift
Yes, to identify a need, and a possible response/intervention, and a way of assessing its effect?
A6) Hope to have my learners blogging next year w/ too
You go Roxanne!!! That's amazing!
Agree SL support is key alongside providing time/space to be able to engage with AR project
A6 providing effective feedback on writing skills to EAL students using OneNote audio
A6 PingPong for formative assessment which is our AR focus
LOL Same here. I live in AKL but twitter is MY best PL context too!
There seems (generalisation) to be a systemic divide between the two. Maybe there needs to be some AR completed.
A6: Have been using google docs to gather survey data. Has been quite effective.
This might hlp TeachThought Blog - The Padagogy Wheel – It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy https://t.co/L259hQDhW4
- very difficult for teachers if not explicitly supported by SLT
SAMR levels are fluid so they often are switching between them
Keep us in the loop! Fingers crossed for your
. And vice versa! We started with Research Alive! conference in 2013 and have been working on this since.
A6 - Am loving EngQuest & SPECTRA to get Ss engaged in STEM. Hands-on stuff too!
Agreed-BUT not an excuse. We need to work as a team.
A6 Ideament & Evernote for information gathering; Google Apps & Dropbox for collaboration. Too many great ones for presenting!
The sun has come out in Scotland guys, don't want to miss the summer. Off for a cycle. Thanks for letting me join in.
I have also been using for students to keep a record of their reading decoding & comprehension progress
Could you research that using an AR approach? What might be your research question? … btw I’m a great Google Docs fan 2
Eep, the You Tube vortex will consume me if I click on it…
Thanks, will watch after.
- HSC is a lagging indicator of success. Social/emotional learning the leading indicator
I appreciate your open and honest answers. It would be great if participated in an conversation like you
Agreed this is an issue. All of us need 2 work hard 2 bridge this divide. AR is certainly 1 pathway 2 achieve this
Google tools help to make learning fun, productive and engaging!
Leaders who are willing to support them-empower them-trust them
True. I see it from the school perspective, but there is definitely a need.
I'm enjoying using the app thanks to showing it at
ALL res'ch in schools requires ethics approval & in NSW public schools there is a 2nd layer req
Yes! Fun to present, my Ss like to construct biographical timelines using
More important do you think? Or just as? Or could u devise an AR project to see if they are in fact more important?
and it's 24/7 across timezones - international focus, range of ideas & views, cant get any better
Is the change beginning? You don't need all the letters to be a great team player
- I would love to hear about things I can use with Surface Pros... no longer on Macs or iPads, so need new ideas :)
Change starts wherever you are-CR for T's, school wide 4 admin
I've got a special secret treat I'd love to share with you! https://t.co/muwesBJVEW
ALL res'ch in schools requires ethics approval & in NSW public schools there is a 2nd layer req
I find you reflect better on your local context the more you think and access global,
.I live in Hastings NZ but most of my PLD ideas/lrng comes from Oz USA via Twitter
Key question there's a societal mismatch between current schooling & kids' needs https://t.co/tR6tMIgxRF
How do we ensure that the educational AR at university level ties in with best practice in schools?
A6 Lots of Google Apps - teacher and student utilised
Success should look different for every child! https://t.co/1vDA13Q2Gl
Or the way we measure success needs to shift
Google Sites can provide opportunity for Ss to start digital portfolio too. Good way to track progress in learning.
A5 Is tech essential to conduct AR? besides documentation, what value are we placing on this? R we speaking about Data analytics?
Let me get through my first term with my own class then I will organise something
Oh boy-T fixed mindset-that's a whole other discussion!!
And in the UK we have a 3rd dimension - Further Education another divide/barrier?
A6 thinking routines powerful in helping Spanish ss express complex ideas and verbalise critical thinking
well said & that’s what good AR should promote - a 2 way channel between practitioners & theorists
A6: Use Book Creator, Popplet and picCollage often
The collective potential that this book would hold between its covers would be priceless. Rock on https://t.co/ew1tE2e71A
Off for a morning run...still early here in Ontario. Wishing all a great evening/day! Special thanks to my Aussie friends!
What is it?? Don't leave us hanging!
Same here, NZ'ers need to be more vocal! We're getting there.
give me 120+ Android or Windows Apps categorised according to Blooms and I will give u a Padagogy Wheel very quickly
it's changing! HSC is hyped up by the media, Ss have alternative pathways
. Agreed! hosts every Monday night here.
There is, but also with the teacher training to what is being done in schools. There needs to be a happy medium.
Great to have you sharing great ideas on https://t.co/xKpi1VKDOF
A6 thinking routines powerful in helping Spanish ss express complex ideas and verbalise critical thinking
Please share ethics is an important area
Good question. Does technology enhance authentic peer assessment? Is peer assessment effective feedback?
Keen too. Gotta work with the tech provided https://t.co/nhihpfinMf
- I would love to hear about things I can use with Surface Pros... no longer on Macs or iPads, so need new ideas :)
you are doing AR on the disruptive pedagogical impact of hot chocolate?
used too as the lighthearted intro to otherwise dry topic of national data collection (NCCDSSD)
Yes! Fun to present, my Ss like to construct biographical timelines using
in some cases yes there are alternate pathways - but not for everyone
I think you just hit one of the nails on the head Denice!!
A5 I think would be a great way to conduct AR, I'm hoping to explore this process further
Involve thought leaders from other professions
I wish it was a treat - requires hours & hours of form filling 😱
I failed my HSC! Told I'd never get far. I've done ok without it!
Same here I ask, keep doing? stop doing? start doing? very honest and powerful feedback!
What would Fullan say about this?
Kiwi's are more vocal when it comes to sport LOL...
Just another hurdle 2 jump - but we R motivated & passionate We are education olympians! We can do it!
Then is our new sport of choice! LOL Look at the AR in sport!
Child needs to go to bed, sorry guys have to go. chat
