Intro Question: Please tell us your name, the state you teach and give us ONE word that describes your school year so far. If you want, use a GIF to accompany your word. Mine is RETIRED lol #espechat
A1. I have a rare opportunity of having a Wellness teacher (certified PE) as a colleague in my building. If we combine classes roughly 50-60kids. Here tonight to get tips @kyahperd#espechat
A1: Personally, I taught at a school for 6 years that the numbers ranged from 80 to 120 (4 classes) but the last 10 years of my career the range was 40 to 60 (2 classes) #espechat
A1: FINALLY, I do not, but as of last year, I was teaching up to 43 high schoolers in 1/2 a gym. Last year my smallest class was 26 and largest was 43...again, only in 1/2 a gym #espechat
A1: We choose to team teach in our program thus we teach anywhere from 2-3 classes at a time ranging from 60-85 kids in our space each class period.#espechat
A1: I currently do not teach to a large class size (38), however, I am anticipating at some point in my career I will. Here for the tips and knowledge! #ESPEchat
A1) I teach 36 students in my "big" class this year. 40 has been my biggest in my career. #ESPEchat Nothing like what some of my fellow #physed teachers have to go through.
A1- 1/2 of my day consists of double classes, K-5, with another #physed T. We average about 50-55 kids at a time. I know thatâs not a huge amount compared to some! #espechat
I do not teach yet but I go and observe teachers. The classes are small because in this part of the state schools tend to be smaller but it is a great learning experience either way. #espechat
Hi @CapnPetesPE and #ESPEchat đđź!! My name is Stephanie Sandino, Iâm a ms #physed teacher in Southern California (grades 7/8). This year has been RAD so far! Seriously Iâm stoked about single level classes!
We have recognized who out there deals with large groups⌠Letâs find out what we like and donât like about it⌠Question 2 is ready for ACTION! #espechat
A1: my large group is 80-90 kindergarteners and 1st graders mixed. I have one 6th grade class of 37, my 2nd-5th grade classes are 30-32 in each. Wide range this year. #ESPEchat
Even tougher when you have kindergarten on the other side of the curtain...and classes were staggered so they'd be midactivity during my intro and vice versa....good times! #espechat
A1. I made it legend. I teach with another teacher at the same time with upwards of 60 children. But honestly donât mind going big. At times we have to run short activity for 1000 . These opportunities I thrive on #ESPEChat
A1... I have 50-60 students at a time in my classroom or k-3. I have a full time assistant, which helps. Also... jumping in & out tonight due to bed times.. Joe from NC! Snow storm coming our way. #espechat
A2: Organizing and planning was my first challenge, but I got better at it each year that I taught. Assessment was always the BIGGEST challenge for me and in my 30 years, not sure if I ever got it right #espechat
A2: Most challenging aspect of double classes would definitely be keeping double classes on track with a single class within the same grade level. #ESPEchat
A1: I do not currently teach large numbers. However, There has been times where a teamate of mines is absent and guess who has the honor of teaching their classes with mines. I would say between 40-50 ss #espechat
A2: I enjoy coming to school 45 minutes early. Setting up the gym, turn on the music. When the Ss walk through the gym, coming from the car rider line to their classroom, they get to see the exciting fun #physed lesson for the day. I đđđźthem talk about what they saw. #ESPEchat
A2: When there are large numbers the biggest challenge is making sure that every S is acknowledged and feels valued. The best reward is succeeding as the aforementioned challenge! #espechat
A2: The most rewarding part of teaching large groups came when the planning and lesson orchestration came together, and the students got in a âflowâ and enjoyed the lessons, (activities and games) #espechat
A2: because grade level classes get doubled up it is fun to see the students interact. They are so excited to be with another group and the friendly competition is nice to change it up #espechat
A2: Our worst behaved group is our 5th grade. That makes it challenging to deal with them always being doubled up when they come. I do like being able to play large group games. I wish I could have double classes for all other grade levels but not the 5th. #espechat
A1 I don't have excessively large classes and typically have about 24. I would love to learn how to handle them beyond my special events where I have 60-70 in a small gym. #espechat
A2) Trying to focus on the content. I have always had high numbers of SPED students, so management is tough w/ large groups with my diversity. Often spend too much time addressing management issues.
#espechat
A1 I do not teach large class groups. I am lucky đđžto teach 1 class at a time. 22-28 Elementary Ss and occasionally I do a whole grade level. Only for a fun event or cooperative activity. Itâs huge difference from when I taught middle school and taught 60 or more. #espechat
A2: Efficiently managing these large groups of students so they can one, engage with other peers they may not interact with throughout the rest of the day and two, maximize the time us teachers and students are allotted to have PE each day/week. #espechat
A2: Challenging when doing assessments. But if large classes are required in order for me to have my Ss in #physed EVERYDAY, Iâll take it. I can adjust. #espechat
A2: most rewarding- I get to see my k-3 students every other day. Most challenging- I now only get to see my 4th-6th students once a week due to change in schedule this year. I used to see them every other day as well. #espechat
A2 biggest challenge is meaningful assessment as usual. I love large groups. Management is key! Procedures must be taught and consistency! Work Smart not hard! Have to be fast on my feet and with my words to get active results w large classes.#espechat
A1) I have the pleasure of teaching at a K-5 school with 700 students. I team-teach and we see 40-75 students (3 & 4 homerooms) at a time in a 60âx100â gym. Having larger classes allows us to see them every other day for 40 minutes. #physed#espechat
A2: most rewarding is seeing Ss more often...challenging is not being able to give individuals much attention...assessing that many is crazy. #espechat
A2 meeting the needs of all my ss is a challenge. Having enough equipment is also a challenge but the one I feel is not being able to make close connections to a large part of my ss. #espechat
A2) The most challenging aspect is constantly asking myself how can I maximize movement time and minimize wait time with EVERY single activityâŚ.that is the logistics of teaching! The most rewarding part is seeing them every other day for 6 years! #physed#espechat
A2 challenging to truly reach each and every student to provide quality feedback and build strong relationships. A positive is I see every child in the building daily so the opportunity to build strong rapport is there #espechat
A2) Sara from North Dakota joining late. Teach middle school - about 50 kids/hour. Most rewarding - when youâre still able to make connections with so much action in your gym all the time! #espechat
At my old school we had 3 classes...Space and equipment were challenging but rewarding is now I know classroom management techniques that can work with large and small groups #ESPEChat
A2 Challenging part is needing enough equipment for AT LEAST small sided games and assessment. Still havenât found a way thatâs successful and efficient đŁ #ESPEchat
A2: big challenge giving them the MVPA their bodies need with a lack of space or equipment..most rewarding is allowing higher skilled students to work w lower skilled/SPED and seeing the growth and respect/love they have despite differences #Espechat
A2: challenges are finding time for a lot of individualized instruction, creating lessons easy to explain yet challenging and that hold value. TBH Iâm having a hard time finding a lot of rewarding factors so far #espechat
A2: When I do a large grade level lesson itâs so fun to see how Ss work together & interact. I usually do an end of year survivor games w 6th gr (I teach K-6) and they â¤ď¸ it. I make sure I have all equipment set out & organized easy Ss to get. #espechat
A2: The most challenging part has to be giving each student the genuine, heartfelt attention they need and desire each time they enter our space. On the flip side, it doubles as a reward when you feel like you give them those needs in a large group setting. #espechat
A3: Equipment & space plays a role in all planning, but w double classes itâs even more important. Maintaining a proper balance between on-task time, safety, discipline issues from any down time, perfect flow vs. utter chaos. #ESPEchat
My problem is the Gen PE class with large numbers because I need an environment that can accommodate my Ss on the spectrum. Large group settings are very intimidating for Ss. I want to set my kiddos up for success #ESPEChat
A3: I was fortunate to have a large gym and ample playing space outside when the weather cooperated. Teaching small group breakout games or using a station format helped with equipment and splitting up when team teaching proved valuable #espechat
Derrick Biehl teaching K-5 PE in Naperville Illinois. Sorry I'm late to the game! This year is my 2nd year teaching and one word to describe it..."Better" #espechat
A3) Gym size has always been my kryptonite. Always. Therefore, I try to plan small sided games they can run themselves or a lot of tag variations with some manipulative skills added in.
#espechat
A1) One school I teach a class and a half (38) which we have 3 teachers on and 2 unites going at a time. One teacher teaches one unit and another teaches another and then third teacher is a floater to help and average class size of 24 in 2 other schools #espechat
A2 Most rewarding is the connections with those ss who I am able to reach out to. Hearing from the families that the ss enjoy and share lessons we learn in class. #espechat
A3. Equipment I tend to buy for 30 students. Partners share for double classes. Facility is awesome (recently renovated large gym) No good outside space though. #espechat
A3: Shared equipment with ASP sometimes disappears. Frustrating when I come in to set up and have to go hunt down equipment outside that wasnât returned. Donât mind sharing if it just gets returned. #espechat
A3 safety is always a concern. You want ALL Ss moving but that can become challenging in an elementary sized gym. Also, during rainy days or cold days equipment becomes limited with over 100 Ss. Have to find ways to be creative and make the most of the space you have #espechat
A3: I teach in a very large space so not too much of an issue and the elementary schools in my district/physed Ts share equipment with each other so there is enough to go around. Takes some extra team planning at the beginning of the year but it helps keep it successful #espechat
A3) I try 2 have a 1:1 eqt ratio. We now have a lot of eqt but storage becomes an issue! 75 scooters, tennis rackets, basketballs, etc.! Some activities are not possible due to the # of students in the gym & lack of square footage per student. #physed#espechat
A2) The moments where everything just works out. Seeing their smiles knowing they're all having a blast.
Also seeing them everyday gives me a change to really get to know the kiddos. #ESPEchat
A3: "You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." Quote from Johnny Cash
#espechat
A3 hard to play large group games or even practice time when you donât have enough equip for each S. We work in stations most of the time to accommodate this. I also can cover a few other GLOs this way. ESP with such young Ss. #espechat
A3: It's a whole different level of planning. Backwards designing is not enough; you have to consider "can my Ss do ____ in the given space and do I have enough equipment to give Ss opportunities". Lack of equipment turns to idle hands --> misbehavior awfully quickly #espechat
A1) I dont teach too many large groups. So far about 6 DBL classes a week by myself. It's not bad in comparison to some, but can be difficult because our school has a high self contained population. Can be tough to modify and keep safe #espechat
Q3: We are very blessed to have an adequate space to team teach 2-3 classes at a time. Again, a big reason we choose to do it. We put in a lot of time and effort toward installing a quality projector system that maximizes instruction and student engagement every day. #espechat
A3: Giving Ss choice in equipment helps if low on one single item. Stations help too. With small space, self-guided progressions work pretty well. #espechat
#espechat Q3 station work in its various forms and small sided games are the key to limited equipment...sometimes we do those at the same time and then flip flop
When I was new it was always my goal to have all names by semester . . . Sad but true. Does your district have a grading program with student pics? #espechat
A3:Space and equipment are huge factors in determining my lessons. My goal is maximum participation but that can be tough when you have limited resources and huge classes. #espechat
You're not alone, TJ. One of the only rewards I've seen is that it allowed me to see Ss more than 1x a week.
It's a shame that has to be the tradeoff. #espechat
A2- part 2 challenging part I agree w @smsandino equipment. Making sure thereâs enough. Even w smaller classes I â¤ď¸ for each student to have equipment or focus(task) w whatever we are learning so all are engaged. Monitoring all Ss can be difficult too w big numbers #espechat
A3. Iâm extremely blessed to have lots of storage space & lots of equipment. Some compare it to the @USGAMES distribution center. @USGames_4PE#espechat
A3: I've been fortunate to have plenty of equipment and facilities use for my students. However, I am taking tips from all of you amazing folks dealing with this issue! #ESPEchat
A3: definitely having partner activities and planning for that. Ex: b-ball this week, 50 students 4 hoops, groups of 3 when your turn you challenge someone at mid court to see who makes it first, other 2 partners have exercise equipment/circuit #espechat
A2) Toughest part is modifying and giving attention to my Ss with special needs. Especially with 60 kids for only 25 minutes...it is not enough time to give those Ss the attention they need/deserve #espechat
A2) Most challenging part for me right now is following up on the consequences. I am Mr.Nice Guy and trying to keep students engaged the whole time. Most rewarding is when kids are saying they love PE & "Oh I get it now!" and I am seeing how to make my classes better #espechat
A3) I tried to buy enough equipments so all students have a chance to use it. I cycle through buying different items during different years. Replace damaged items as permits. #espechat
SORRY at volleyball A3- the space and equipment makes a difference More space more efficient lessons. Save time of collecting and resetting up. Leave things out and just go to a different area! More equipment less down time for students! #espechat
A3 Not so much facilities, we are pretty good about staying out of each otherâs way, moreso, equipment. Canât just have pairs, it has to be 4-7 per team depending on what we are doing. I live off of small sides games so that I can travel to each group #ESPEchat
A3: I have been blessed with good equipment budgets, and a recipient of grant money. But once in awhile Iâll run into only having a 1:2 ration of equipment to Ss.Thatâs when creativity has to happen because lines/standing around doesnât happen in my world! Lol! #physed#ESPEChat
A2: Most challenging is when there are individual (exceptional) behavioural challenges that demand teacher's attention. Challenging to spread out good feedback and individual attention to as many S's as we want to #espechat
We have exposed the equipment and space challenges now⌠Letâs explore how we âgroupsâ students when we have large numbers⌠Question 4 is ready for team play! #espechat
A3) I luckily have a large gym, so I can fit the Ss but equipment can be tough. The toughest thing is having one class on a certain lesson of the unit, and the other class on a different lesson of the unit...and then the next time I see them it is a DBL class. #espechat
A3 Space I would say would affect more of the lesson than equipment. Many times you can divide the class into small groups to use less equipment. #espechat
A4. KAGAN strategies used throughout the school. Kids used to those procedures so I used them in PE! @KaganOnline Imade these mats using Poly mats from @USGames Can group by color, number, letter. #espechat
A2: We team teach large groups, so most rewarding is being able to have contact with students "outside" of my specific class of kids. Being able to collaborate with my talented and fun PE colleagues is a treat #espechat
A4: My grouping strategy is to have spots for students to sit during instruction or discussion. Spots are numbered (as many as needed), spots are colored (6 colors of rainbow), and each spot is a shape (4 different). This gives me multiple options for grouping. #espechat
A5) I use the Team Shake App as much as possible. It allows me to group Ss quickly. I then divide up into groups. It also helps me to keep specific students away from each other. #ESPEchat
A2 the most rewarding is that I feel like a celebrity everyday and the most challenging is that the excessive talking and I feel like I don't get nothing done #espechat
A4: Grouping depends on the activity. Can be class vs. class for 2 teams, random 1/2 class vs 1/2 class for 4 teams, for partners or groups of 3 we do 5 Magic words âWill,You,Be,My,Partnerâ https://t.co/GhjyP5fCfd#ESPEchat
Making partners quick & easy w no one left out. â5 Magic Wordsâ Will You Be My Partner. Answer is either âYesâ or âSorry, I already have a partner.â Can not say âNoâ to a new friend. #Physed#Rhes19
A3: in a perfect world it wouldnât but it definitely does 48 kids in a small room since Cafeteria is in use during lunch is challenging. In winter months I do dance &build skill related fitness eg: reaction time, balance, agility, etc. that can be done in that room #espechat
A3: Obviously the more equipment you have the more opportunity to keep students engaged in the activity. But also a good lesson for Ss to learn to share and take turns when equipment is limited. #espechat
A3: I try to plan a lot of group activities, stations, & partner work w/small amounts of equipment. Fortunate to have a good sized gym and decent amount of equipment, but try to keep it lower on the equip to allow for quick setup/cleanup and better safety #espechat
A4: Also, using non-threatening quick grouping techniques when ability was not an issue seemed to work odd/even numbers, birthday months, etc #espechat
A4: We create 6 rainbow colored teams every trimester. Each team is created based on the strengths & weaknesses of each student on each team. We spend a lot of time thinking about who will make each other better. Those colors then drive all organization each day. #espechat
A4 I use what @CentervillePE1 taught me with creating groups of 3. One Ss is doing the activity, next Ss is focused as they are next, and the last Ss is catching their breath from just going. Use GIFs to allow visual cues as I provide feedback as well #espechat
A4) i have 6 Squads...one for each of the color choices for almost all equipment we get (Red, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Purple) it is the easiest way to be organized with little transition time. "Squad Cheat Sheets" hang on the wall with their #plagnet numbers next to it #espechat
A5) I use the Team Shake App as much as possible. It allows me to group Ss quickly. I then divide up into groups. It also helps me to keep specific students away from each other. #ESPEchat
A4) In terms of whoâs in the different groups: we collaborate at the beginning of the school year to try and divide out Ss to minimize how often they are with those they donât get along with. Each grade is divided to 5 groups. #espechat
A4 6 stations color coded with colored dots on floor to line up before switching stations. Change with music. Ss wear colored wristbands to match their starting station. #espechat
A4 I am counting kids off to go to their corner to start their station. It is the easiest transition wise for me right now. I want to premake groups, but my transition is lacking #espechat
A4) I group students by the kids know to go to their spots so we can begin the lesson. Students have designated spots and their are sports or markings in the schools where I can direct students to move to. Gives mutliple opportunities to form groups #espechat
A4: Depending on activity, I tend to group Ss in large classes by ability level. This way advanced students can push each other and lower skill levels can enjoy their experience and grow without intimidation. Then I can treat each group almost like mini classes. #espechat
A3.2: I have made sure I have enough equipment for my classes although I feel like a pack mule bringing out 48 Basketballs or soccer balls lol . Also have to be aware of safety when large groups are doing certain skills. #espechat
A4: This yr my school implemented idea I had of House Color PE Kits. 1st week observing to make teams fair & then have 4 teams all year. House challenges & rewards give kids ownership of the kit, allows us to group kids in multiple combos/makes stations easy/looks great #espechat
#espechat consider your âend gameâ and build to that. If small sided games are groups of 4 progress from individual to pair to quad. If 6 start in 3âs. This also allows you to put groups where they need to be successful. Helps manage transitions too
A4) During class I use grouping cards I created that have 5 different ways I can pair Ss together. Iâll also use the grouping cards from @physedreviewâs TPT store. #espechat
A4 I could go on and on about this one.I believe that kids work better when they pick their own team/partner.There is always exceptions but generally I let them decide.I did away with squad lines, etc a few gears ago.Disclosure-not criticizing anyone for diff opinion! #ESPEChat
A4 I group them in a variety of waysâ team shake (they can only blame my phone), strategically (behaviors, good friends that can be off task, etc.), ability (ie like on my 4 square unit), OCCASIONALLY I let them pick such as their Spikeball partner for life! #ESPEchat
I set clear protocols at the beginning of the year and practice making different size groups. Students then understand expectations. Then I can implement the size group I need for the activity & maximum engagement. Once engaged, I can then circulate and help as needed. #espechat
A4: agreed! You can't just "count off by 4s" or even leave it up to random chance like Team Shake. EVERY part of planning for large groups has to be intentional or it can spiral out of control quickly. #espechat
A4 I also use a theme each year and each class gets a team name. Within the class Ss are placed in 4 squads which helps with station work and keeps group numbers small and transitions quick #espechat
#espechat Hey you all! I am just here to get a better idea of elementary PE. My kindergarten wants me to teach at her elementary school next year, so I am processing it. I love reading your tweets on it.
A4: this is a huge challenge 4 me. Sometimes I have all Ks, all 1s, or a mix of both. PLUS I donât always have the same students together. My head has been perpetually spinning! Ss have had a lot practice creating their own groups, and Ts adjust when needed #espechat
A4: I make groups ahead of class and adjust for Ss that are absent. Even w smaller classes I use color coded cones to get Ss in groups or small teams quickly. I have them trained pretty well to make the most of our minutes. We do instant activities right- gets us set #espechat
A4: We also train our students how to authentically pick their own teams often and do it with a mindset of "I need to notice other students who need to be noticed and pick them to be on my team/group every time I see someone who looks lonely". It has changed our culture.#espechat
A4 I think apps such as team shake might be difficult to use with large class sizes. If you want them to get into a group of any size, use more simpler techniques like categories. ex: hair color, bday month, color shirt, etc. Gets S's in groups fast! #espechat
Are you concerned about giving students maximum movement time? ⌠Question 5 addresses how we MAXIMIZE activity timeâŚletâs mooove in on it! #espechat
A4. I have dots painted on my floor that every kid is assigned to. I also have 60 dots on my large cirlce in the middle. That helps them âspread outâ on the circle if I need it. I, like @MoreThanGym, use my 4 square courts a lot. I have 10 of them. #espechat
Grades 4-6 have iPads and I have been using the #Seesaw app to assess through videos and projects. Plus it helps me give individual feedback and be connected to their parents as well. Loving it so far! #espechat
A5: For me, being organized and having the equipment ready for action with clear and concise instructions/demo seemed to work Also having a solid plan of action for rotation and transition #espechat
A5: One of my favorite activities for large classes can be found @OPENPhysEd under HS Creative Mode Fitness. It was adapted from a lesson created by #physed legend @djhberg Here is a link: https://t.co/Iv4sPioyjL. A pic of the first page of the activity plan is below. #espechat
A5- Stations Its a miracle changer!!! So many options with this! Different equipment for differentiation. More stations less down time or more equipment! #espechat
A5) 20 4-sq courts, 17 long jump rope stations, 6 portable/6 permanent BB goals, routines, planning transitions, plenty of eqt, getting the eqt ready before class, minimizing the time it takes to reset eqt between rounds https://t.co/hItms34ajG#physed#espechat
Our school started a House Color system this year for our Positive Behavior Plan. That's a great idea to implement in PE for grouping. Thanks. #ESPEChat
A4. For me I go with friendship groups for all teaching. Groups of 4,5,6 max. My children learn best if their personal social and emotional needs are addressed first. #ESPEChat
Thank you! It says Iâm unable to view it at this time but Iâll try and open it at home on my laptop!! Greatly appreciate the resources đđź #ESPEchat
A4: I'm in the same boat, TJ. I have a lot of K-1 classes or 2-3 classes. Can be challenging at times when the 3rd grader doesn't want a 2nd grader in their group, etc. #espechat
A4: Team shake for large/groups teams. I do various pairing/ grouping routines for younger Sâs & small groups. learned a Pirate one from my buddy @thepechallenge when he was my BTSA mentor that one works well. Paired w/ a veggie tale song pirates who donât do anything #espechat
A5: We project Words and GIFs for EVERY BIT OF OUR LESSONS. Combine these projected visuals with our effective teaching cues and classroom management strategies and we often get our students moving for our goal of +75% of the time. It drives activity time. #espechat
A5: I find that starting basic with skills and then slowly building and adding to the base rules to make it a larger game works best. Kind of the TGfU model mixed with my own #espechat
A5: Stations, stations, stations. Can make 4-5 course with same stations (with diff challenges). The first course is critical (little explanation but well demonstration). #espechat
A3 within the stations we do small sided games and leadup activities. Typically partner work and or no more than 6 for sm sided games. Facility use at lunch is difficult. #espechat
I usually mention âI have the right to change the groups if needed. Why would I need to change someoneâs group?â That gets us started on a quick chat about acceptable behaviors. #Espechat
#ESPEChat a5 instant activity, limited transitions, when using stations build on things youâve already done so everything doesnât have to be âre explainedâ, have equipment ready at the start, talk less, interact more!
A5: PartB: There are infinite possibilities with this concept. If you have limited equipment, you can have the last line (purple) have use of the equipment that you have available. The other Ss are working on fitness concepts. #espechat
#espechat
A5 having a plan with procedures being well taught allows Ss to get the most out of the time we have. Using visual aids and GIFs truly helps Ss stay on task and allows me to provide the needed feedback #espechat
A5: Use of visuals for mass instant activity. YouTube dances, vClone created exercises, You Choose exercise video options. Our gym floor is taped in a grid formation. Ss come in & stand where the tape lines converge. #ESPEchat
A5) Routines and high expectations! This may take LOTS of practice and energy at the beginning of the year but will pay off throughout the year. #espechat
I mix it up, team shake for time sake but I have squads, by class, boys/girls, plickers numbers, puck your own . . . Keep it changing keeps them from getting bored with it #espechat
A5: Iâve tried a lot of station rotation to allow multiple skill environments. Also do a lot of continual games so there isnât much down time once we start. I try to put lessons together like dominoes so that one part falls into the next w/easy transitions #espechat
A5) I try to be prepared and planned for constant movement. Ready for action and extra activities in case. Also do a lot of stations. One school we have PE helpers (5th graders) who come in the morning and afternoon to help set up or break down!! #espechat
So awesome, one to one devices? Iâve been toying with the idea of student leaders bringing their own device and try to do group assessment through @padlet or @flipgrid#ESPEchat
#espechat A5 Having the equipment set out and placing routines on how to handle equipment is the biggest help. It can be hard when Ss do not use the equipment appropriately because you have to take time away from the students.
A5 Students know what to do when they enter the gym w/out T help. Practicing procedures and transitions in the beginning of the year will help maximize activity time. #espechat
A5: Quick transitions between multiple engaging activities. Ex. two small sided games going on (4 teams of 4), 2 teams in fitness stations (2 teams of 4), 2 teams in water/cooldown stations (2 teams of 4), 2 teams in skill practice/scouting station accounts for 40 kids #espechat
We have maximized that question for sure⌠Letâs look at organization and its importance when working with big #âs⌠Question 6 is PLANNED and ready to go! #espechat
A5:I use a white board near the entrance to my classroom (gym) that has an instant activity it.Tâs often make it a job for Ss to read it to class, use it as a way to teach words.I also use a ton of videos, slides on projector. All cuts down on talk time=more MVPA #ESPEChat
@CapnPetesPE tends to bring out a lot of people when he's moderating! Tonight has some of the best of the best of the best in the #physed realm. Make sure to follow a lot of new people tonight. #ESPEchat
A5: equipment ready, reduced downtime I have an instant activity for when they first get to class and one for when we transition out to the field. Also building games in layers helps reduce explanation time and helps focus activities to certain key aspects. #espechat
A5: then rotate groups every 4-5 minutes. No one is in any one place for too long. Just long enough to catch your breath, not really long enough to get bored or off task. #espechat
A5) GIFs have been a game changer! Iâve been trying to put all my lessons in Google Slides (shoutout to @MrRoosPE for the inspiration) with GIFs, and even quick Rules, Cues, or Helpful hints. It has cut down so much on transition and just nice to store all in one spot #espechat
A5: Always be prepared with equipment ready and in place. Have a back up plan ready when things donât go as planned. Smooth transitions from one activity to the next, and clear instructions/demos. #espechat
Its totally worth it been! And the best part, every time you create a quality visual lesson, it's there in your toolbox FOREVER! We've done it for 2.5 years now and we continue to build off of great creations. Hats off to you for motivating me to be better ;) #espechat
A6: Beyond the obvious of established classroom protocols, expectations, consequences are vital for management & lesson pacing. I believe in having a strong personal rapport. I try to ask them about their weekends, sports, hobbies. Get to know them better. Respect. #ESPEchat
A5directions on whiteboards at each station, color coded class numbers on the floor. All Ss have their own color and number. Line up in number order when coming in or going out. No arguing EVER. Get in orderđł #espechat
A5 Build and teach routines on day one and/or day two of your unit to help get teams sitting for what, why, how, teams onto courts, equipment distribution and collection #ESPEchat
A6: Organization is CRITICAL with big groups. Having solid lesson plans and utilizing some effective behavior management tools makes a world of difference Check out @pe2themax or @thepespecialist for great ideas #espechat
A5: Small sided activities!! I have also learned to always have my equipment set up prior to class to minimize the management and maximize activity. As well as the amount of time I spend talking hahahaha #espechat
A5 pt 2.) One thing I want to do is: during partner/group work have partner or group who is waiting doing a fitness exercise while waiting just to keep movement up. #espechat
A5: you could have 100+ going through this activity simultaneously with nearly no risk of off task behavior. As @djhberg has shown, it could be fitness based, skill based or both. Honestly, the only thing that limits your numbers on this is the size of your space. #espechat
In reply to
@PEtop5, @OPENPhysEd, @djhberg, @djhberg
A6: prep and time management is EVERYTHING! I pride myself on efficiency and using my time with Ss wisely. 30 minutes goes really fast. Ss also know that class is their time so are less likely to waste time with talking- they want to move! #espechat
A4 one thing I have been doing is rotating partners opposite directions every few minutes. If you start with a partner when timer goes off each person goes opposite way, and always move same direction. Allows for students to work with a ton of partners. #espechat
A6 Being organized is a must. You have to plan far ahead to make sure the units/lessons you want to implement will work with the class size. Classroom management helps with the pacing of the lesson. #espechat
A5 I also want to get into the habit of posting unit information on the locker room so they can see before they walk out and be ready to go (of course have another copy at hand for my forgetful ss) #ESPEchat
A6 being organized and having clear expectations and procedures. This helps with transitions and helps keep things on track. Also, having a strong rapport with Ss is crucial. If your Ss respect you and know you care about them they will give you their best each day #espechat
A6 using color coding is essential for seating as well as movement to stations. Color wristbands are our life saver! Can instantly see when someone out of their station. Helps with transition as well as bathroom breaks! #espechat
A6 Planning is key to having enough equipment, activity time, transition time. Using a timer is helpful for some lessons. If a lesson is going poorly I look at myself first to see if I planned well enough for them to succeed. #espechat
A6: Routines, Verbal Cues, Classroom Structure & Expectations DRIVE EVERYTHING. We find a way to work all of these things every single lesson from Day 1 until the year closes. Training Ss in these areas through play without them realizing it is a craft i love to master #espechat
A6) I always try to be organized and time everything and yet it doesn't go as I want it to. I am learning and constantly making tweaks but still tend to lose time when trying to give the right amount of time at each station or activity! #espechat
How do I assess 100 students? A frequent question for many #PhysEd Tâs⌠Question 7 will help us identify some methods for formative and summative assessment with multiple classes. Time for the test! #espechat
A6:planning is huge!I believe classroom management is an expectation set at the beginning. When done well,it makes it simple. Ss know what is expected,no need for rewards, stickers, etc. They know (hopefully)that I have high expectations but they also know I love them! #ESPEChat
This happens and then I ask the child âwho do you work with in your class or hang with at snack timeâ this tier 1 question always works. I always sell a quality in child so that they feel positive. Like: you need her because she has an amazing arm. #ESPEChat
A7: Plickers magnets or plagnets has really helped with this. Assessment at a station built w/n the flow of the other stations. I will admit that assessment is on of my downfalls. My classes are only 30 minutes. #ESPEchat
#espechat A6 I think the best benefit from organizing and planning before hand gives you the confidence in your teaching. It seems to run so much more smoothly compared to other days when I did not plan so well.
A6: Having layers thought out helps to quickly move activity to next level of challenge for Sâs and keeps engagement up. Knowing the set up and having it ready keeps kids moving. The more kids are idle and waiting the more they will find ways to entertain themselves.#espechat
Building relationships is the hardest part with large class sizes. Gives you some added motivation to build relationships with your S's as best as you can. #espechat
A6: organization and meticulous planning is key. âFailing to plan is planning to failâ. My office currently looks like an episode of House w/a white board of ideas, tons of notebooks w/refined ideas, & I added a page of PE site links 2 my website for easy access #espechat
A6: Organization is essential for success. Established protocols to help make class a win-win for everyone. When the learning environment is organized and orderly, classroom management is easier and students are more successful in their learning. #espechat
The details arenât clear in my head. Picking different ss leaders every âxâ amount of time, would it be a team effort and the ss leader just transcribes, does the ss leader do the assessment for each individual team member, hmmm đ¤ #ESPEchat
In reply to
@MrRoosPE, @ckmulloy, @padlet, @Flipgrid
A6: I've been very successful using GIFs and projected rules/expectations/cues/reminders as a large scale visual that Ss can refer to from anywhere in the gym. Adds a "2nd me" and an accountability piece. Can't say I didn't tell you when it's right up on the wall. #espechat
A6 Being organized and having set routines is essential to success. I used to use a whistle to bring my ss attention back to me. Now just putting both hands in the air gives ss the signal to freeze. Whistle is rarely used. #espechat
A6) it seems simple but I have this chart hanging in my pffice and at the end of every lesson I mark off what # the class is on. I didnât start doing it until mid way through last year but HUGE help to keep me organized. P.S. keeping your Google Drive organized đ #espechat
Q6: When A classroom environment is organized, Ss are eager to participate and remain on task. When there is organization, behavior issues are minimal. #espechat
A6.2 Also when you are organized you know what you want from the activity ( the what why how) and have assessment planned and expectations set. #espechat
A6 Organization is KEY. It helps you to know approx how much time to spend on each activity, makes transitions quick, and allows you to anticipate possible management challenges #espechat
A7: I had to use stations for Fitnessgram fitness stations and they would rotate to me or my parpro. I also used trained high school students and parents to help on occasion #espechat
A7) My colleagues and I each monitor a section or zone to individually assess the students! In most cases, the assessment is a motivator! https://t.co/Gf4DACvG8c#physed#espechat
A6: of course, that requires tons of organization and pre-planning. As @PEtop5 knows, I'm suuuuuuper organized (#sarcasm). It's been a battle for me, but so so so worth it! #espechat
Not sure if this is what your referring to but my class has about 5 of those spots. 1 of which we use for warm-up start, station instructions, and grouping. #espechat
A7: a lot of repitition so I have a lot off opportunity to observe, grades 4-6 use the #Seesaw app to demonstrate knowledge through videos, etc. I also use plickers a lot #espechat
This is why its important for PETE to actually plan every detail. As you get "older" and more experienced those plans become a lot more condensed. #ESPEchat
#espechat A7 I sometimes take my school ipad and film the students performing the skill as a whole group, then watch it later after school. I just have to know what Ss I can't film and put them at the end of the gym or watch them personally right away.
A6 have really enjoyed throwing a video timer into my slides. Keeps students on task but also keeps me on time for everything. Lessons can run right up to the second I want them to go. #espechat
A7: I love reciprocal teaching and peer assessment for formative assessment of skills. Students teaching and checking each other is an effective and time-saving way for students to learn new skills #espechat
As someone that has far less than that, I would think that partners assessing each other or self assessments with rubrics would be important. Fitness data (HRMs and pedometers) would play a role too. #ESPEchat
A7 Plickers is probably the most efficient self assessment with large class sizes. I honestly believe anything else where you are one on one with a student will take too much time. We have to find more productive ways to assess. #espechat
A7 this is a tough area for me. I am always trying to figure out how to be better in this area. I use plagnets and split my groups up as much as possible. I use station work to allow me to assess Ss. Also, teaching Ss how to self and peer assess correctly is huge #espechat
A6. I use colors for everything when organizing my classes. Every student is on a color dot and in a colored row...when they use the equipment it is the same color as their dot or row, depending on the activity. Kids always know what equipment is theirs, etc. #espechat
A7: effective assessment is on the top of my list for areas of improvement. Iâd love to make a station an assessment station, but find I must float to keep the other stations flowing. Iâm here to find a good way to make my assessment work! #espechat
A7 - checklist. Fast and efficient! Also, peer assessment. You look over it on off time see what stands out. Focus next class on those standouts (good or bad from peers) Gtg back to balling out #espechat#volleyballtime
A7- Itâs tough! One way for me is the use of @Seesaw especially for self abd peer assessments. I am blessed to teach in a 1:1 iPad district. We are one year 5 (I think). I just request they bring their devices to #physed#ESPEChat
A7) One school we do a chart challenge at around the 3rd day of the unit where we see what level (1-3) they are going to challenge themselves at. If they succeed they can sign their name on the paper. #espechat
A7: I've struggled mightily here! Rather than try to do a pre/post with huge groups, Ive kind of just waited for days 6-8 of a unit and tried to assess kids in small batches. Identify 10-12 a day to give them an end assessment. Usually add the assessment as a station #espechat
A7: This is 100% why I wanted to participate in tonight's chat. Our assessment strategies can be better. Our district just launched SBG last year and now we are constantly racking our brains on how to assess in the most efficient, time saving way. HELP! :) #espechat
A7: Doing it as a station allowed me to focus on groups of kiddos in a natural but not as dynamic setting without having the whole class watching them. #espechat
Definitely! Give students the responsibility of assessing themselves and each other. Then you are free to circulate and help those who need it the most. #espechat
One station could be a self assessment station with plagnets, or you could use BAM video delay so Ss can self assess too. Maybe set up a video station you can review later? Just tossing out ideas đ #espechat
A7: effective assessment is on the top of my list for areas of improvement. Iâd love to make a station an assessment station, but find I must float to keep the other stations flowing. Iâm here to find a good way to make my assessment work! #espechat
A7: older student do seesaw, mindmaps and exit tickets. I also use @GlennYoung_PE âs FMS simple assessment and a google forms see @exercys âs video on making a forms skill assessment #espechat
A6 Beinh organized & prepared helps you foresee the challenges and helps with plan b, c and d. Having relationships with your ss allows you to predict who might need an extra job or extra activity to stay on task. And again those routines & expectations are reoccurring #ESPEchat
A7: When I assess large classes, I set up stations where students can âself-manageâ. The stations are activities theyâve already been taught. Expectations are reinforced prior to getting started. This way, I can asses a few student at a time and rotate. #espechat
A7) Peer and self assessments are very powerful here. I don't currently trust 99% of my students to give themselves an accurate score, but self assessment is a skill, like any other, that needs to be taught. #espechat
You all passed the testâŚWay to go⌠Now lets look at how we transition so many students from activity to activity and location to location ⌠Question 8 is now moving in for transition! #espechat
Early years is hard. It helps to have a base knowledge of Ss from year to year which helps to know who might already have it and can help others #espechat
A7 Iâve started using Plickers magnets just recently with my little ones. Learning the procedures takes time. But I have magnetic whiteboards at each station and they know their color/number. Can take them w them and answer the ? At the station. Then move on! #espechat
A7: Plagnets are no doubt on the list of future attempts. Problem is all our teachers share and grade multiple classes. It would be a HUGE project to take on with full buy in and time necessary. HoPE for the future! #espechat
A7) #plagnets are the best. Can't emphasize that enough. Also Skill Assessment on Google Forms...@pe4everykid has an awesome video on how to do it. Flipgrid is great but time consuming to watch all the videos. Best thing is that exit slip self-assessment. #espechat
A8: A message board is a great way to transition b/w classes. Ss come to PE with energy! Why make them sit and wait for the T to be ready? The Warm-up engages Ss as soon as they enter class. The Focus/Goal saves T having to answer 50x "What are we doing today?" #espechat
A8: My students had a home base (a number on the floor that they started and ended class on). Using cones, polyspots, directional arrows and such is helpful for activity transition. Also using consistent routines makes life easier in #PhysEd#espechat
A8: Transitions w/n a double class is harder. Having established routines in important. Music stops= đ & look at me, hear a whistle= đ & look at me. Equipment goes on the floor or criss cross in your lap, like an egg in a nest. Stop & wait for the Ss is important. #ESPEchat
Any assessment is like that. I have to spend a lot of time discussing how you give your friend an "A" if they give you an "A" is not helpful. Trying to learn is at the core of assessments. #ESPEchat
This is also a tough one for me. I feel that I am constantly assessing my own use of assessing and changing it as needed. Which sometimes seems to be often. #espechat
A7 this is a tough area for me. I am always trying to figure out how to be better in this area. I use plagnets and split my groups up as much as possible. I use station work to allow me to assess Ss. Also, teaching Ss how to self and peer assess correctly is huge #espechat
A7 pt. 2) I use that Self-Assessment at the end as a debreif..."tap a got it if you...." "Tap wow if you..." "Tap Almost if you..." and then when we revisit the skill I remind Ss to reflect on what they've previously done and see if they improve. #espechat
A8: Changing classes does take an extra 60-90 seconds at the end. 1. Clear directions on clean up. 2. Not sending everyone at the same time. 3. Set location to line up 4. Being clear, organized, & patient. #ESPEchat
A7 - checklist. Fast and efficient! Also, peer assessment. You look over it on off time see what stands out. Focus next class on those standouts (good or bad from peers) Gtg back to balling out #espechat#volleyballtime
A8) I visualize and take time to plan the transitions! I strategically place the equipment to help make them smooth! I only get 40 minutes and do not want to waste a single moment! https://t.co/BJK4aLvFgh#physed#espechat
A7 Something that I tried last year was self-assessment w magnets & plagnets using success criteria. It was just something that worked outside w a whiteboard, donât have to worry about any papers flyers or đť being dropped on the blacktop (+ hard to see screen w âď¸) #ESPEchat
A8. Ending each class with a Mindfulness practice- breathing techniques and or Yoga calms the majority of Ss before exit. Homeroom teachers love a calm class after PE! I get to chill a minute too! #espechat
A8: The only time our Ss sit during a period is the last 2 minutes when they are calming during closing. Again, with practice we use song changes, slide changes, GIF changes, cues, and "Team Flips" to transition. Our goal is 90 seconds or less each transition. #espechat
A8: I got back to my handy dandy white board on wheels for classes that are coming in. As far as in class, I use a lot of timers on projectors. And, my Ss know what is expected. Lots of teach/reteach! #ESPEChat
A8 transitions are built into slideshows as much as possible. Now that my students donât look to me for every direction they find transitioning to be calm and quick #espechat
A8 having a learning target board with the instant activity posted outside the gym gets class started immediately. Established Procedures then keep things going. Freeze means stop and listen, music means go, etc. #espechat
A7) weâve used peer assessment during game play when we donât have space for everyone to be active. It gives kids who are out something to do related to the activity. And, it teaches them what to look for when assessing. Sometimes it works great, sometimes it doesnât! #espechat
A8) transition with consistent start and stop signals. Also use a countdown to end he precious part of the lesson. Donât surprise the students and end abruptly. #espechat
A8. Ending each class with a Mindfulness practice- breathing techniques and or Yoga calms the majority of Ss before exit. Homeroom teachers love a calm class after PE! I get to chill a minute too! #espechat
A8: Make sure to say it AND project it so Ss get it 2x 2 ways. First transition, we stop everything and everyone, I walk & talk them thru it. By transition 3-5, Ss already know what's coming, where they're supposed to go, etc. I keep the movement in logical progression #espechat
#espechat A8 I think the key concept with large groups is to plan, plan and plan and then be ready to reflect reflect reflect and modify as needed....truly the same approach for any lesson
Bonus Ending Question: We all teach in different facilities, with different equipment but if you were in charge of everything in your program, what would be the ideal number of students for you to teach per class? #espechat
Transitions are challenging but I require my students to go to their assigned class lines which become quiet zones. We do reflective questions and self assess. Then we swap groups with art, tech, library, & music to allow our teachers an hour planning time daily. #espechat
A8: many of my lessons are layered to make transitions easy & mostly seamless. ASAP activities use the same equipment as the main lesson. I try to add/remove equipment thru each layer. Each layer feeds into the next. This helps cut down on 2 much explanation #espechat
A8) If stations my students know to stop & point to the next station when the music stops so they can quickly move to the next station. Doesn't happen smoothly all the time, but when it does it is quick and fantastic! End class, each class has a line to move to #espechat
A8: We use music and I like to use a timer like Tabata pro. The kids know when the music is off we are moving and they know the sound of the timers we use. #espechat
A8: Instant activityâs on my whiteboard, as one class leaves other looks at the board and starts all have been taught at the beginning of the year with new ones added periodically. I try to have hidden set up changes to transition lessons. Cones ready just not out yet. #espechat
A8 Transition from roll call numbers to activity field/area. Move, sit and read the what, why, how board (just got an idea lol, put up a question they need to think about DUH!). Transition from intro to activity, get them started on some type of practice round 1/2 #ESPEchat
Made my K students pooint to their next station before rotating so they could visualize where to go next. Havent told them to do it since October and almost the whole class still does it! #espechat
#espechat A8 I am starting to use google slides for my lesson to help transition quick. This allows me to see the students more and get quick transitions going faster!
A8: I also intentionally use the same terminology time and time again. Might be boring to some, but it builds a "Pavlovian" sense of familiarity. When Ss hear "1 goes to 2..." they ALL can finish my sentence for me and it eliminates a lot of the guesswork and ambiguity #espechat
I have my student tâs do this while they intern w/me... a lot of them have struggled I have noticed over the yrs. I now make sure they have a solid understanding of it before they leave me. Also going back 2 @djhberg & his thinking ahead of group #âs. Pairs- quads, etc. #espechat
A8 While everyone else works on getting their court and equipment ready as well. Activity to maybe a layering activityâ whistle blast, hold equipment, maybe a demo and then off they go again #ESPEchat
A8 like @MrRoosPE said giving Ss a heads up that a transition is coming with a count down is huge. It saves time because Ss know in 5 seconds instructions will be delivered and a transition is happening #espechat
A8 i have a meet and greet spot and an ending spot. Equipment gets put back or cleaned up before recess. Use warm ups and instant activities to get ss going as I instruct helpers to set up between classes. #espechat
Thanks so much for participating in tonightâs chat. It is not always easy to find the time to participate in these types of #PhysEd chats but your contribution tonight is much appreciated! Have a GREAT Holiday Season!!!#espechat
