-
Glad you are here Craig! Wow Canada, Australia, and America at least for now.
-
-
Tonight’s topic: "Socially Just" schools and increasing development.
-
Tid-bit 1/3: "Social justice is defined as promoting a just society by challenging injustice and valuing diversity."
-
-
Crystal, TX... Hopping in and out- getting tired kiddos in bed past bedtime 😳
-
-
Tid-bit 2/3: Social Justice It exists when all people share a common humanity and therefore have a right to equity.
-
Tid-bit 3/3 Social justice offers support for their human rights, and a fair allocation of community resources."
-
Bonus: Tid-Bit "Social justice is generally equated with the notion of equality or equal opportunity in society."
-
I know that's a lot of info, and "Social Justice" is a broad topic. Q1 coming up!
-
Adolescents have a strong sense if SJ.
Yet adults seem to put 7t diwn rather than channel it https://t.co/fxePzKcM7i
-
-
Tid-bit 3/3 Social justice offers support for their human rights, and a fair allocation of community resources."
-
Q1 - Have you considered how ideas derived from “Social Justice” might impact development in our schools?
-
A1. SoJust IS the very example of resilience. Gotta have a thick skin to handle seeing society's darker hist/actions
-
A1 Lack of social justice impacts SpEd kids like Kid O. She is resilient despite that.
-
A1. Both ways. Some Ss gave developed reslilience due to SJ issues, while others gave had it knocked out if them.
-
-
When we plan for a system that affords opportunity to all, don't we all win?
-
A1. To commit to SoJust is to fight against those who perpetuate injustice, frequently dominant culture, those in power
-
Deb, I can only imagine the difficulties that you have encountered.
-
Yes, where injustice is present, and allowed to thrive, many children are disenfranchised.
-
A1: Presenting SJ issues and inviting Ss to action empowers them. Empowerment leads to
-
u wouldnt know it w/all the resistance from those in power....
-
Yes, great point, We will examine the idea that power should be protected, rather than shared. https://t.co/LE58h4jhrQ
-
-
u wouldnt know it w/all the resistance from those in power....
-
Q2 – A Social Justice paradigm reflects the notion that we have reciprocal relationships between/with each other, Do we?
-
-
brb laundry needs to be transfered
-
Rob, I've only scratched the surface in how I've talked about Kid O.
-
A2: Yes! Relationships are critical?
-
A2. Good question by the way. I hadn't thought of it that way. Equal relationships.
-
Guess not. Dryer's still full... Fam whyyyyy
-
A1 I've been told "I've got mine and the hell with you." Not literally but an advocate said as much to me.
-
A2. No we don't have equal relationships and never will. The are lots of natural barriers. We need respectful relationships
-
A2: No oftentimes students of color are looked at as being deficient by their Ts because of their race & language
-
A2. No, but we must strive for equality AND equity.
-
A2: Not when ss are bullied in school because of their sexuality
-
-
A1 How can I achieve social justice when most of the time I am being worn down?
-
Did u hear, tho, TN sank their Anti-trans gender bill? https://t.co/nkfm2JeWHn
-
-
A2: Not when ss are bullied in school because of their sexuality
-
A2: Not when female ss are disregarded, slut shamed, and silenced
-
Great insight Carl, is so important to - We might never get to https://t.co/ztk1xd9Eah
-
-
A2. No we don't have equal relationships and never will. The are lots of natural barriers. We need respectful relationships
-
A2 No. Not if one is saying to the other, "Go play on the freeway."
-
teachers and student relationship cant be equal. But as the the party with the power we can control the respect
-
And, this is the type of social injustice that the paradigm says we must confront, and correct. https://t.co/nsxo8RoR5P
-
-
A2: Not when female ss are disregarded, slut shamed, and silenced
-
A2: Not when ss don't see themselves reflected in their textbooks and the novels they read
-
A2 Not when doors are slammed in one's face. Not when an advocacy org person says, "She won't talk to you." Justice for some?
-
Prof Susan in IL joining belatedly & only for a bit. Wkng hard to complete this book for everyone.
https://t.co/RbsONdgSvG
-
A2 Things don't have to be equal to be fair. Ss needs to be treated fairly and with respect. So do teachers. 2way street
-
I challenge that idea. Yes the teacher is the authority on content, but Ts can learn just as much from ss
-
I suggest that if the authority is abused, power is off-kilter, success diminishes. https://t.co/v4GpZZZSLI
-
-
teachers and student relationship cant be equal. But as the the party with the power we can control the respect
-
Getting ready to bring Q3 - I really appreciate everyone's ideas and reflections tonight!
-
Yes, we all have so much work to do! https://t.co/Jst1IW4ThP
-
-
A2: Not when ss don't see themselves reflected in their textbooks and the novels they read
-
Q3 – Some might say that if we need to focus on each child, and build their capacity via social justice, How do we do this?
-
The book available on amazon 1st wk May. Aimed at 8th thru 12th graders and beginning college students.Includes attn to:
-
If we cant be truly equal, then we must at least give opportunity for every1 to reach their goals.
-
And Ts can't control the respect Ss given them.
-
-
A3. Get to know S. Show interest and engage Ss.
-
-
That's the idea behind SS/teach SS/SS Teach/teach Teach/admin Admin/SS https://t.co/SCOsKGqPcb
-
-
I challenge that idea. Yes the teacher is the authority on content, but Ts can learn just as much from ss
-
A3: Ts start with the needs of their ss and provide equity through curriculum.
-
A2 Love focus on soc justice & reciprocity. One key element is not viewing others as "other"--need to see all on same team
-
A3: By explicitly teaching social justice to the future generation.
-
A3: Providing ss with opportunities to advocate for causes they are passionate about
-
A3. Exposure. Give Ss a platform to discover they have a voice. Show them the reality of world we live in
-
The elusive art of I think it's more than students being active, it's about connection https://t.co/TSdzDMfTTd
-
-
A3. Get to know S. Show interest and engage Ss.
-
A3 authentic relationships and asking Ss to
-
A3 Simple. Stop saying no. Stop saying it would be too hard. That we don't have the resources.
-
A3 Schools must be places where it is safe to be who you are. Diversity needs to be celebrated not just tolerated
-
A3: Be vulnerable. Don't pretend to understand every child's situation. Listen to learn.
-
Absolutely, each is part of the community, yet, we often segregate, and saparate https://t.co/YMQ6dGKhh4
-
-
A2 Love focus on soc justice & reciprocity. One key element is not viewing others as "other"--need to see all on same team
-
A2: we should but it doesn't always occur.
-
A3 Nee to help each student know that s/he matters & can make a meaningful difference in the world, in the community.
-
A3. Allow Ss to dream, have goals, but also tell them, esp. SOC of the obstacles in front of them
-
Love that you are bringing it tonight! https://t.co/zCybzu2SY7
-
-
A3: Providing ss with opportunities to advocate for causes they are passionate about
-
A3. Get to know his/her story. Seek to understand.
-
Social justice should be the ethical and equal treatment of others. It does not exist if there's an imbalance of power.
-
A3 What we need is education equity.
-
A3 Need to help each student know that s/he matters & can make a meaningful difference in the world, in the community.
-
Yes, indeed! - Sometimes getting a "C" is ! https://t.co/JDN9A28W3E
-
-
A3. Allow Ss to dream, have goals, but also tell them, esp. SOC of the obstacles in front of them
-
as a vol. in a suburban school, some difficulty in exposing them, esp. since dont want to upset Ps. But were getting there
-
"Speak softly & carry a big stick." Respect should be shown from both sides of the trenches.
-
-
A3 This is very important. Students need to understand that life is not easy. Not always summer.
https://t.co/ya3RTPdzU0
-
-
A3. Allow Ss to dream, have goals, but also tell them, esp. SOC of the obstacles in front of them
-

-
-
A3 Need to help each student know that s/he matters & can make a meaningful difference in the world, in the community.
-
yep, resilience comes in when they manage to overcome those, move forward to accomplishment despite walls
-
Respect is a 2 way street. Even if T controls the environment, does T control respect?
-
A3 This was key in 60's civil rights era:
not power over others BUT power with each other
https://t.co/6WjYRyc9Pd
-
-
Social justice should be the ethical and equal treatment of others. It does not exist if there's an imbalance of power.
-
A3 We need so called Democrats like Rahm to stop closing schools in poor communities.
-
When I graduated there was no education equity...but, kids got what they needed.
-
Big Idea: “Social Justice should focus on liberating rather than oppressing those least served by our decision making."
-
well i am not from the 60s, but aren't well all taught we are one nation?
-
Q4 – How might we work to ensure that each child is “included” at all levels of their education, that is served?
-
Best to all! Need to get back to grind to get this book out for teachers, principals, students. Too many Ss w/out guidance.
-
We are on the same wavelength.
-
The Roadless Travelled: "Life is suffering. Once you accept it, life is much better."
-
Must treat others w/ respect B4 you have earned it. Eventually you will earn it by your daily walk. https://t.co/5L1c0ZdJps
-
-
Respect is a 2 way street. Even if T controls the environment, does T control respect?
-
I wonder if "All" Kids did? So many over the years have been marginalized, and pushed aside https://t.co/Sy7iTkRGs4
-
-
When I graduated there was no education equity...but, kids got what they needed.
-
A4: Acknowledging the relevance of ss multiple languages and allowing them to communicate and learn in those languages
-
A4: Ensure every voice is heard. Ensure that each child matters.
-
A4. We must continue to advocate for it. Unite w/like-minded ppl for a stronger voice is 1 such group
-
A4 We make due process a real possibility. We have more attorneys who work pro bono.
-
A4: Providing ss with extracurricular opportunities to explore and develop their identities
-
walk the walk, talk the talk. Practice what you preach!
-
A4. Also as we advocate for equity, Ss will see u model SoJust. They will be inspired
-
Also import remind students: spring follows winter.
Cycles
Life not supposed to be stuck in winter
https://t.co/WZ073NPllp
-
-
The Roadless Travelled: "Life is suffering. Once you accept it, life is much better."
-
So important to consciously listen, support and hear their voices! I exist if you notice me. https://t.co/WcPurpF8yP
-
-
A4: Ensure every voice is heard. Ensure that each child matters.
-
A4: Acknowledge that learning is just not academics. Teach the .
-
A4: By developing meaningful relationships with parents and listening to what they have to say
-
More families where involved, and kids got better neighborly help. :-)
-
All for extraCs. Forever grateful for my MS Drama Theater, EngT/DramaDirect. created it as safe space aswel
-
A4: By supporting and empowering ss instead of judging them
-
I am so by you all! Keep it coming! Q5 on the way!
-
ExtraCurriculars can be life changing, can be a safe haven, can find themselves and w/ group https://t.co/dAMC8p0x0B
-
-
A4: Providing ss with extracurricular opportunities to explore and develop their identities
-
A4: listen without judgment is key.
-
A4 We need SpEd attorneys who won't bemoan the fact that more people can't afford them as they sit in their fancy offices.
-
are you in twitter jail still????
-
Q5 – How do we support our colleagues to build their knowledge of social justice, & commit to including each child?
-
SpEd attorneys drive up education, and decrease the amount of general spec. ed. funds.
-
A5. INCLUDE SOJUST IN PRESERVICE EDU. Sorry, but I think its vital to have culturally comp. in edu. schooling
-
A5 Support your colleagues by actually telling them that parents like me have something worthwhile to say.
-
A5: That is a hard task, but creating opportunities where they first recognize their biases in a safe environment
-
A5. Ive had to learn about advocacy, sojust outside of my classes. Shouldnt just be in Urban Edu. courses
-
Kind of like some medical specialists. Interested in billables.
-
A5: Then share research and real life experiences about how ss experience injustice
-
A5: we all act in solidarity to create a better world. Show that strength in unity builds a positive life.
-
Big idea-2 "social justice framework is a way to build less unfairness and inequity while enhancing freedom and possibility!
-
I think if its included in education courses in college, it becomes an easier task. 1/?
-
A5: Then show them ways to make their classroom socially just through restorative justice and curriculum
-
A5: Then have then come up with their own ideas based on their ss
-
@@MzUrbanEducator Ts enter the field more educated & willing to listen after getting past own biases
-
Do you spend $250,000 on a lawyer or hire five special education teachers?
-
Totally cool with just you! Just didn't know if she was still blocked. You rock too!
-
I agree with you 100% that's part of how I learned
-
Yes we must build perspective through awareness, then supporting for ss. https://t.co/UWc8KN1ZC6
-
-
A5: That is a hard task, but creating opportunities where they first recognize their biases in a safe environment
-
Thanks for hosting another thoughtful ! Have a great week!
-
It's not either/or for me. I'd like to be able to do both. Not all SpEd teachers are created equal.
-
-
Unfortunate that I had to choose between 2 schools. 1 that offered them, other doesnt but easier totransfer
-
A5: model the behaviour we desire. Prove that life can be safe even when expressing opinion.
-
As some1 who's been in coll. for too long, cant afford to start over completely, so had to choose latter
-
Q6 – If we want peace 4 kids, shouldn’t we want to ensure that each of them is provided the very best opportunities we can?
-
A6. Yes, unfortunately, reality is diff. We have to continue the fight for equity/equality
-
-
It's ok! Your commentary in this chat is amazing! And shows that you are already on the right side!
-
-
A6: Yes, we should always want the next generation to be in a better position than we were. https://t.co/N1JOMsnggY
-
-
Q6 – If we want peace 4 kids, shouldn’t we want to ensure that each of them is provided the very best opportunities we can?
