I am Jack Dingus, OL Coach at Shawnee High School in beautiful Shawnee, Oklahoma! Home of the Wolves! Shawnee will Shine tonight! I am Co-Founder and Co-Host of the Monday Night #HogFbChat
To me it’s a double edged sword. Can help teach your kids to keep a low lad level but if not coached right kids will bend at the waist instead just to get through. #HogFbChat
Pros: Good for off the ball explosion and for teaching hip bending and not knee bending. Cons: Kids feel that they have to stay that low during the entire play. #hogfbchat
A1: Pro - working knee bend and leverage Con: Kids hunch over as to not hit their heads too often. Which is why I might be investing in a soft cover chute (using a sheet or something comparable). #Hogfbchat
A1) I only use chutes the first 5 mins of practices. Just want them to bend a little at the knees then keep it moving. Much better things to do. #hogfbchat
A1. Pros: Muscle memory of getting low. Cons: Chutes are too low and kids bend at the waste instead of getting the “z” in their legs, hips, and ankles. Better for more developed athletes. #HogFbChat
A1: GREAT question! Everyone has different power angles. My 6’4” left tackle won’t have the same power angles as my 5’11” center. The chutes put everyone on a playing field that may not be suitable for them, and ultimately that player will develop bad habits. #hogfbchat
A1- pros: forces them to take steps correctly, get 2 in the ground. Cons - I feel like they focus on not hitting the chutes instead of just getting off the ball. I only use them as a punishment. Would much rather use the cage! #hogfbchat
A1)
+
gets them conscious of pad height
Good for first step/ first two steps
-
Doesn’t solve the issue to pad height
Can create bad habits
Focus too much on not hitting their head vs actual ol movements
#hogfbchat
A1: I’ve never really been a big fan of chutes. I can see how it could potentially work n mobility, but everything under there seems unnatural to me. #hogfbchat
A1:
+: Focus on pad level, Lays it out for guys that it’s important.
-: Poor neck habits, bend in the wrong places if not a natural bender to fit coach’s request. #hogfbchat
A1: Pros: (short form) creates better pad level. Creates pride in being lower that the opponent, helps with better hip flexibility/range of motion. The chute is the ultimate tool of “get comfortable being uncomfortable”
Cons: none #hogfbchat
A1. Con- chutes are pretty much one size fits all. In HS the OL comes in all different sizes can create some unnatural positions for guys when using them. #Hogfbchat
A1- #hogfbchat Obviously pro is working on good pad level at get off. However if they lose the 'get off" just to avoid the cross bar I think it defeats the purpose. I like them just have to work the young guys on purpose.
A1: we haven't used them in 5 years. Not opposed, but it seems so many HS kids are too stiff and an unatural get off is reenforced..except with the good athletes. #Hogfbchat
A1
Pros: flexibility, lowered pad level, can double as stretch time for those that think stretching is stupid (Me and Mike Leach)
Cons: can teach bad habits like dropping eyes
#HogFbChat
A1: Pro- in theory it encourages a knee bend and emphasizes staying low. Con- in reality ,more often than not kids tend to hunch over at the waist to avoid hitting their head. #hogfbchat
A1) Pros - emphasis on the wide base and firing/staying low
Cons - If not corrected, players may develop an overextended first step, while trying not to hit their head
#hogfbchat
A1) There’s many different styles. All tend to have their own unique limitations. The style below is the one I’ve grown accustomed to but in recent years have used them more in prepractice or early in the fundy periods to multitask footwork/pad height/hip activation. #hogfbchat
#HogFbChat Pros: posture, power position, focus on tech —- cons: not gamelike, with less flexible kids it becomes conditioning/flexibility work less blocking/tech.
A1: With all due respect Coach, Con and Chutes should not be in the same sentence 😂. But to answer the chutes are not just about leverage to me but it’s where my guys first learn how to control a block and move a man keep Z’s in their knees.
#HogFbChat
A1: GREAT question! Everyone has different power angles. My 6’4” left tackle won’t have the same power angles as my 5’11” center. The chutes put everyone on a playing field that may not be suitable for them, and ultimately that player will develop bad habits. #hogfbchat
A1: PROS: Firing out and staying low off of the snap. CONS: A tendency to hunch down or dip coming out of the chute to avoid hitting their heads. #hogfbchat
A1: Bodies and stances are not one size fits all. Being low is only part of the equation. The steps to get there have to be sound to be effective. They can definitely be a tool but I do not think they should be the tool. #hogfbchat
A1) Chutes limit space, but are critical in developing hips. Drive blocks are one thing, but learning to pull under a chute produces knockouts. I'd rather have a chute than a sled! #Hogfbchat
A1: I’ve never really been a big fan of chutes. I can see how it could potentially work n mobility, but everything under there seems unnatural to me. #hogfbchat
Q1: prob one of the younger guys on this chat but I believe that getting under the Chutes makes you tougher and if you want to be good at moving bodies around you have to consistently move bodies around also helps teach leverage. Especially with those old Pipe chutes #Hogfbchat
A1: Overall, not a huge fan. A kid that’s taller really develops bad habits in them. Most bend waist and duck head. I think I like them better for defense, actually. Teach power angles...pad level will take care of itself #hogfbchat
A1) I get the idea behind chutes but often times I see kids just bending at the waist to get under the chute. I think there are better ways to get the desired result, starting with putting more emphasis on proper stances. #hogfbchat
Q1. Pros- Help your linemen get low and stay low. Builds toughness and helps you find who your “run behind me” guys are.
Cons- Our chute only holds 5 and not 7.
#HogFbChat
A1: I feel like chutes are a tool of extreme exaggeration. More than anything, they expose your waist benders. However, they do not create a real look and can lead to more bad habits. Can see the benefit in very light use. Don't wanna waste a ton of time there though. #Hogfbchat
#HogFbChat pros are low pad level, Good knee bend, chest out, back not hunched over as long as the proper technique is coached constantly. Bad habits can form when technique isn’t constantly harped on
I use my chute mostly for starting my drills. Reinforces good hip and knee bend in stance... We rarely do drills under it because not all of my kids are built the same. #HogFBChat
A1: Pros-instant feedback on pad/helmet level out of stance, great tool to use for mobility work as well
Cons-Some players don't fit the one size fits all approach and have poor habits with round back and neck
#hogfbchat#JerseyMade#GoPanthers
A1: pro: teaches pad level using hip flexion vs. bending at the back
Con: not everyone is the same height, not all chutes are as forgiving (soft top like netting or chain) and makes athletes gun shy from being aggressive. Does the purpose outweigh the space taken up? #hogfbchat
A1. Cons: They Bend at the waist, head and eyes down, can't play fast out of chute. Pros: Prevents young Lineman from popping straight up out of their stance: #hogfbchat
A1 I don't use them, ever. As a player I did all the things coaches have already listed for this answer. As a coach, I end up correcting chute specific errors more than what I'm trying to reinforce for the game. #hogfbchat
Q1. What are the pros and cons of using the chutes in your opinion?A1: PRO-Good way to teach pad level and hip drive works well when doing fit and drive drills and hip flexibility. CON: can reinforce bad technique and habits, but you either coach it or you allow it!!#hogfbchat
A1 I'm a big fan of the chutes if they're used probably. I don't want a kid to cheat the chutes and ruin his stance just so he doesn't hit the chute. I think it's a good hip flexibility tool as well. A lot of great drills to benefit the kids #HogFBChat
A1. Guys that have pad level issues often develop bad habits under chutes of bending at the waist or ducking head. We preach eye discipline at nipple level. Hip, knee, ankle flex has to be developed in off-season.
#Hogfbchat
When I was OC at Olathe South our HC never let our OLine use chutes and our line was consistently flat backed and low off the line. I don't know about pros and cons, but I know it depends on how you coach whether they are necessary #Hogfbchat
A2: I love chutes, but the one thing that really helped our guys this year was boards. Kids really had better feet, and with drill work, our blocks really improved. #hogfbchat
A2. Boards. Efficient footwork is most vital to O-line play. Then shields. Get that violent strike with intent. Keep it simple. Master the basics. #HogFbChat
A2: one man sled. Use it to work double teams. “Aim small, miss small.” Have to get together and stay square or sled spins or doesn’t move. Didn’t use sheilds because made difficult to hit landmarks with hands. #hogfbchat
A2- Indoor blocking sled. All of our inside practices as well morning practice were done on it. Really a game changer on not having to use bodies and getting immediate feedback on quickness and force! #hogfbchat
A1:
Pros: Love it for get offs. Can use for multiple drills, doesn’t just have to be for OL work.
Con: Not a fan when working steps slowly, kids want to dip head. Can create bad habits if not coaches will. Defeating the purpose of the chute.
#hogfbchat
A2 we worked the chutes everyday. Saw a big change in pad level after we made the chutes part of our daily routine at both the middle school and varsity level #HogFBChat
The single man sled, using it for pull fits on LBs and trap/kick out pulls. Also used for drive blocks, I preferred to use this just because as the season wore down and having a small roster all the guys played both ways. Wanted to try and save some bodies. #hogfbchat
A2: #hogfbchat anything in weight room ( I know this was not the spirit of the question) however we use sleds and chutes. Also handhelds and standup pads are probably the highest in priority for us.
A1) Pros: Impossible to cheat to win. Have to have great hips. Builds great muscle memory!
Con: No one makes one that is 53 yds by 100 yds...yet. #Hogfbchat
A1: I would say our heavy bags were the most unpopular amongst our players but also most important to our ability to move other humans against their will #hogfbchat
A2) ☝️Boards ✌️EACH OTHER. We didn’t have actual boards this season so I had to improvise but I can’t get enough board work. I live for it. Under the chute, out of the chute…I don’t care. And every single guy was vital as we introduced pods & learned to COMMUNICATE. #hogfbchat
A2: moving humans? Other than that, the weight room and med balls. They simulate the X-bag/Pill from @OLPerformance. Can’t afford the bags on my own, so I bought 3 6-pound large med balls. #hogfbchat
A2 part 2, I didn’t see other players counted... we had a great scout team this year on both sides of the ball. Kids took it serious and did an amazing job. #hogfbchat
A2: Is close between chutes and sled. I would have to give the nod to chutes as we can do a lot of good work with man drills. #hogfbchat#JerseyMade#GoPanthers
A1: I would say our heavy bags were the most unpopular amongst our players but also most important to our ability to move other humans against their will #hogfbchat
A2: Spa Day. It’s not a piece of equipment. I will take 7 minutes of Indy time and stretch them. It is really a core/hip/groin period. We have so few numbers we have to take care of our guys since they play both ways. #hogfbchat
A2: Small hand shields. I prefer the forearm rip pads held tight to the chest because it teaches more precise hand placement than the big bulky rectangle pads. #Hogfbchat
The 6-man sled by Rogers Athletics (especially in the spring). Hands down. Works especially well when you have your QBs involved to take snaps and have your o-line get used to various QB cadences. Put that baby on the lowest setting and work the hips, hands and feet. #Hogfbchat
#HogFbChat two —— med balls were important to us to get lots of good reps on punch/placement. 2 man sled we got this year @coach_whitaker was really good at working our timing/teamwork on combos.
#hogfbchat A2

#hogfbchat Boxing Hand Mitt by far. Helps with tight elbows as well as great Hand placement. Even on Zone plays whether inside or outside, you can hold pad where proper hand placement should be.
A1: I’m not a fan of the chutes we have, therefore we don’t use them. They are the ones that have the spot for the head extended. The big ones on wheels with the screen stretched across are the ones I want. #hogfbchat
A2: Boards. Although, once we started doing OL vs DL (our DL guy had problems about halfway through the season so I assumed the DL during indy time) 1-1, 5-5, etc I noticed a little more nastiness on Friday nights. #HogFbChat
A1. Whenever I work with linemen who take practice and their craft serious, I see the chutes as being great. Only way they can be negative is if a player is lazy and not actually getting low just bending their back to stay under #hogfbchat
A2) cont…I’m not a big 6-man sled guy but we got some preszn work in this summer w/ it. We flipped the dummies upside down to minimize the surface area to narrow up their hand placement. I can’t take credit for that idea though, that was all the HC. It seemed to work! #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat Q1 A1 use at beginning of practice..boards and chutes..everyday fundy...more of soft cover trampoline. Full line...first steps and contact through end...pro...knee bend and hip roll (chute slants Up) con...bunch back to avoid top..kids always find easy to cheat drill
Really? Because I’ve got a kid playing for the Packers right now that wasn’t that great at chutes for OL. Must be super lazy to make it to the league...... #hogfbchat
Q2: What piece of equipment was imperative for your OL during the season? A2: PVC chutes in cement buckets did a pull circuit worked our skip pulls, kick outs, down locks saved time and maximized reps!! #hogfbchat
A3: I wouldn’t say I disregard any equipment. I might use one less than another, but depending on what I need to coach up, I will use anything. Have used @shadowmansports for OLine drills before. #hogfbchat
A3: the chutes and boards. If I do anything similar to board drill it’s done on a line. Don’t need my kids twisting an ankle trying to prove who has a bigger set. #hogfbchat
We use it to drill zone steps in a +/-/ and neutral positions. We drill the one hand player in zone and gap combos, and we drill our gallop step and drive. The biggest upside for us is the athletes having to be aggressive and learn to fight the pressure to stay square #hogfbchat
A3. Sled. 1- it's off on the grass field behind our turf we practice on so it takes to long to get to and 2- as season goes on need more assignment work, fine tuning etc and the sled gets cut. #Hogfbchat
Hahaha. We use them a little, but prefer the OL doing upper body work on ladders.
Threw it in more for the controversy, tbh. Like to see a good #hogfbchat fight. Agility ladders is just low hanging fruit. Lol.
The kid busted his ass under the shoots, but in order to meet the head OL coach’s standards he had to bend at the waist and duck his head. If you put him against someone I’m sure he’d get whooped because he’s out of his power angles. #hogfbchat
We will also use it to read 2nd level defenders in zone/gap combos to practice communication (we use a me/you system to determine who climbs to second level) #hogfbchat
A3) Everything has its time and place. I’ve probably used everything at some point. But one thing we didn’t utilize a lot IN-season as much as I probably should would be the 5-man. We have limited fundy time so we have to prioritize. #hogfbchat
Q3. I don't totally disregard any of our equipment. I would say some of it is more limited during the season as opposed to camps/off season training but we don't abandon anything. #Hogfbchat
A3: The bench press. We spend so much time July-December on unilateral movements, why force it on lifting days? Dumbbell press is a better movement, IMO. Alternating, single arm, both arms, whatever... it translates better. #hogfbchat
A3 #hogfbchat nothing really. we will take stuff that we work in fall camp or summer work etc like working steps, hand placement, and other fundys instead of individual drills on these work them within the big picture like base progressions etc. or with hand held drills
A3: Hand shields. They can be useful at times, but I really prefer blocking each other in pads. Unless shield dummies will be out on defense on Friday nights, avoid them IMO. #Hogfbchat
All good, man. I used to be a firm believer in the chutes. And then a guy that beat my ass all of the time as a player outside of the chutes lost to me in them. Couldn’t figure out why. I started reading about biomechanics & what not and realized they’re not that good. #hogfbchat
A1: This is a must every day! Posture is the most important thing. Eyes up. Flat back. Pound the feet. Problems I’ve seen are elbows don’t always stay tight...and of course eyes/necks can get down. #HogFbChat
Side note
We do condition during practice. One year our O-linemen needed to be a little tougher and more like a unit so during the conditioning period they would be exclusively condition on 5 man sled. #hogfbchat
A3) (desregard A1 for a moment) As season progresses, chute. Not a realistic movement and doesn’t build teamwork needed to succeed as unit. Better to teach body position in younger levels and early in the year. #Hogfbchat
Q3. What piece of equipment do you totally disregard during the season? A3: interesting to see how many guys saying the sled. But I have to agree we wained off of it as season progressed, only used it cause kids liked hitting on ol' betsie! #hogfbchat
Also not necessarily the case. The chutes put a “one size fits all” perspective to OL. But a 6’4” player won’t be able to get as low as a 5’11” player. It’s just simple biomechanics and physics. #hogfbchat
IMO this should be hot it always is. Drive the sled 4-7 seconds max, rest 30-35 seconds then repeat. Emulate what you do on the field. Running gassers isn’t ideal for OL athletes. Doesn’t translate. #HogFBChat
Side note
We do condition during practice. One year our O-linemen needed to be a little tougher and more like a unit so during the conditioning period they would be exclusively condition on 5 man sled. #hogfbchat
A2: the old trust hand shields are always my most used. But honestly it’s that’s our whole line lifted all offseason so the 2nd team gave us a real look in practice #HogFBChat
A3) cont…I actually still utilize the hand shields even after pads are on. Some guys are such unreliable targets it’s tough to get any consistent reps in, especially if hand placement is “secondary” in the drill. #hogfbchat
A3 we use everything we've got. Don't want something purchased for us to go to waste. We'll find a way to incorporate equipment into drills to help the kids get better #HogFBChat
Even thought I wouldn’t be able to convince the AD to purchase it I would like the sled from OLine Performance I love watching the way that thing could help. #HogFbChat
Then why use them in the first place? It’s not a realistic movement and doesn’t translate, so don’t do something that has no real use on the field of play. #HogFBChat
A3) (desregard A1 for a moment) As season progresses, chute. Not a realistic movement and doesn’t build teamwork needed to succeed as unit. Better to teach body position in younger levels and early in the year. #Hogfbchat
A4: Interested in answers to all of these. Thanks for the perspective. Love my hand shields, rubber angled boards, and dudes willing to give great resistance under control. Open to more! #hogfbchat
A3: The bench press. We spend so much time July-December on unilateral movements, why force it on lifting days? Dumbbell press is a better movement, IMO. Alternating, single arm, both arms, whatever... it translates better. #hogfbchat
A4) For OL specifically it would be great to get some @OLPerformance X-bags and for offense in general I love the idea of having @AustinJames_7 VAR virtual reality system for teaching purposes. #Hogfbchat
Wish this wasn't on our wish list. Ours blew down in a monsoon late in the season and shattered EVERYTHING. Didn't know how good we had it till it was gone...#Hogfbchat
A4: reading I would love to get a 2 man sled. But if I’m being realistic all I want is a End zone camera so my guys can watch the Butt shot on Saturday mornings. #Hogfbchat
That’s interesting. Been using them for years and have never had that happen, as a player or a coach. These are the type we’ve used though. Low profile (and portable, the fold in the middle w handles). #hogfbchat
#HogFbChat two 6’6 300 lb tackles that can punish in the run game and set the width in pass game. Did I mention they need to be sophomores, and 4.0 students ? @coach_whitaker
A4: kick boards, x-bag, pill, pretty much any #SKAQ equipment. Lots of stuff from @OLPerformance. I was hoping to attend the clinic while I was in LA, but it’s not feasible. Ummm... sheesh, fat bells, Kettlebells, fat grips..... #hogfbchat
Agreed. Barbell bench, while decent as a supplemental lift, forces too many bad habits and puts the shoulders in a bad position. Also feel like we all need fat pads. #hogfbchat
Q4: Sideline film equipment that works all game. @hudl sideline was atrocious all season. Most games Hudl sideline didn’t work after halftime. I’m searching for new equipment this off-season #hogFBchat
#hogfbchat
Q4: always looking for more @OLPerformance equipment. Aiming at adding another hand bar & maybe getting a Pill bag. And really looking forward to getting kids working on @LBOlineDesign sled when it comes in #earlyXmas#grateful#hogfbchat
All depends on where I end up but an end zone camera never lies and I really like those remote control blocking dummies. I was at Pittsburgh Glazier last year and one came at me. Bad move. I dropped my hips and pancaked it. #flashback. #hogfbchat
A4:
We use the old wood boards, but I would love some rubber ones. Seems less hazardous and easier to maneuver. I remember working on them in college, and there were no ankles turned, as opposed to the wooden ones that can get a little dangerous. #HogFbChat
That's a wrap! Thank you all for being here to contribute to the Monday night #hogfbchat We would be nothing without you guys! We appreciate everybody who contributed tonight and even those who just watched from afar #hogfbchat#AllGasNoBrakes#GoGo
A4) My wishlist changes constantly, but besides more boards and a larger chute, I think it would be nice to have a Crowther sled (?). Haven’t used one in years but I found it helpful in teaching inside footwork & hand placement for the inside man on double teams. #hogfbchat
Alright #hogfbchat chutes DO NOT help OL block better. Because ind. are different sizes, some automatically have an advantage because a chute can only be set to one height. It forces taller OL into a poor stance with inefficient power just for the sake of “staying low”
Pros: pad level and work several technique drills can be worked with it. Cons: Sometimes O-Line Coaches can get lazy, instead of working fundamentals they just run through the chute for individual everyday. #hogfbchat
Please remember to follow your fellow coaches for weekly chats and collaborations! This profession is made up of some of the best people I know out here. I love being able to talk to you all any time of day #hogfbchat
A4 I wanted these things and we did a OL fundraiser and I got them all.
Earthquake bar ✅
Set of bands ✅
Soup bone and Torque wheel from @LPAStrength ✅
If we’re going wishlist I’d like to travel and see @coachdeesmith in action for a week. He brings a ton of juice. #HogFBChat
If anybody out there has topics or questions they want covered on an upcoming chat DM myself or @CoachDingus and we will get them on as quick as we can #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat guys shameless plug since the chat is officially over but getting close to releasing an e-book hope you would give it shot its called Triple Option RPO.

Thank you all for participating. I’ve been your cohost Tony Shiffman. Until next time, which due to the holidays won’t be until January 7th. Please enjoy your holidays and we look forward to seeing you Monday January 7th at 8pm CST #hogfbchat
A4: I got asked before so I’ll tell you our fundraiser was we got together on a Sunday as a unit and hand washed a vinyl fence surrounding an entire neighborhood for about 8 hours of work. It made us closer and we got all items in our wishlist via donation from HOA #HogFBChat
A2 We used 8 of the Fisher Junior Popup bags (45’ 65lbs) to simulate the defense. The OL set the bags up after each play. We called out the front/shade and they set up the bag position. They fire out over the bag. The bag is low so their pad level matches it.
#hogfbchat
Our verbiage might be different but the ones in the picture are only a couple inches tall and give quite a bit. When I hear stepover I think of the half moon or halfhexagonal pads. Even those are too high and I stay away from using them as boards if I can help it. #hogfbchat
I get it. I used chutes religiously until about 4 years ago. I knew it was an issue for some kids but didn't really know how to fix it until then.
#Hogfbchat
And the reason for that is you’re training the entire muscle when you go through full range of motion. When you move the entire muscle is activated, therefore going through a full squat while lifting is imperative to maintain power through all angles. #hogfbchat
My humble take:
I was 6’4” 300 in hs and we ran the veer. We lived under the chutes. I struggled HARD my first couple years, but by my senior year, I could fly through them. My hip flexibility went through the roof, and I learned how to be a knee bender
#HogFbChat 1/2
I’ve seen similar OL grow the same way under the chute. Now, it’s not one size fits all— if you’re a heavy zone scheme team, it might not be best. But for me, it’s essential for the down block and ESPECIALLY pulling to kick
#HogFbChat
Transfer must begin and end with the actual demands of the game, demands of the position, and then demands of that athlete playing the position with who he is as an offensive lineman. If it doesn’t translate, why do it? #HogFBChat
I can understand hip flexibility to an extent. I use a hurdle during pre-practice for that. But I just can’t get behind putting dudes under a chute and saying “now move”. #hogfbchat
A3: Bags!!!!! Bags Big Bags, Small Bags, Arm Bags , Step Over Bags they all even gone we working on really bodies #HogFBChat not necessarily live but body on body! No one blocks a bag in a frig’n game
And that’s it for the 1st ever #PassGameChat. Didn’t mean to schedule at same time as #HogFbChat (brain fart), will be moving to THURSDAYS, starting up after the holidays. Thank you all, and sorry #HogFbChat boys!
A1: I don’t know of any cons using a chute. Especially for run-first teams. Personally love that we have a 3/4 man old, square-tubed iron chute. I have two eyes, if I am coaching I can’t see all 7 at once. So we’ll get 6-8 reps per minute under ours. #HogFbChat
A2: a few things. Trash cans for assignment. Cowboy collar (had a RG with a stinger) really helped his restrict his neck better. Weightroom as a whole. 5.6 per rush doesn’t come from guys who don’t work when no one’s watching. #HogFbChat
A3: 🤷♂️. We use a chute as much as possible. Hell we got two of em. We use sleds 10-15 minutes a day. Hell we got two of em. We use boards, cans, shields, dummies, towels, fire hose for placement in triple with backs on mesh, etc etc... #HogFbChat
