Tonight's topic: Class Sizes and Configurations
-
-
Didn't know you were here tonight, Sara. Good to see you, too.
-
your tweet is in the feed!!
-
-
-
-
-
Hey Rob! I am tired, too,but less so than previous weeks.
-
Tidbit: Class size and configuration continues to be a "hot button" topic in education.
-
-
-
Q1: What do you teach and how many students are in your class?
-
For clarification, what do we mean by configuration?
-
I may lurk more than participate. I teach 1:1 so class size is irrelevant to me.
-
-
Actually I thought about you when picking this topic esp. since you are 1:1
-
-
A1 Fifth grade general education. 31 Ss
-
A1: one teacher to one student. I teach french language, math, sometimes social studies. Ages 7-17
-
A1: Mixed age, 4th-6th grade class, 22 students
-
A1 Humanities 7 (double block) - 11 kids. Middle School Rock Band - 6 kids. Upper School Rock Bands - 19 kids.
-
A1 When Kid Q was in first grade, it was team taught SpEd & GenEd teachers. Classroom was overcrowded. At least 30 kids.
-
Configurations include things such as furniture; tables; desks; rows; circles; couches; nooks; etc.
-
-
awe... That's funny. I ♥️ 1:1.
-
This is interesting to see the variety.
-
A1 Once when I was bringing Kid Q to her classroom after DDS appt, I felt overwhelmed. Like sardines.
-
In our K-3 is headed to 24:1, 4-8 is at 34:1, our secondary contacts are at 170:1 per day-varies by period.
-
And we shall teach Rock and Roll to the world. Girl style. :-)
-
A1-configurations- We are moving to tables and chairs on wheels to provide flexibility to teachers.
-
It would be interesting if some other ppl from other countries checked in also to share their numbers
-
Q2: What is your thought on what is the best class size or teacher/student ratio for certain grades?
-
At alternative public high school 17:1 in u-shape formation
-
Was this the constant setup? Or did the SPED Ts/Ss come & go throughout the day?
-
have taught K all way to 6th-17-42 Ss at any time https://t.co/a6PavCXonR
-
-
Q1: What do you teach and how many students are in your class?
-
-
-
42?!?!?!?! At one time? Did you have another teacher or aide?
-
A1 took off for High Holidays. Kid O had complete meltdown. Got that dreaded call from the office, "Mrs. Gleason..."
-
Q2: for 2/22/16! https://t.co/zgLj1iEMwT
-
-
Q2: What is your thought on what is the best class size or teacher/student ratio for certain grades?
-
A2 I think it varies not just by grade but also by course. For Humanities 7, 10-12 is cool. For Rock Band, multiples of 4-5.
-
Nah it was 1/2 day kinder-42 in one session 39 in the other ended up 1/2 through year with new T https://t.co/mQSYjmpmqO
-
-
42?!?!?!?! At one time? Did you have another teacher or aide?
-
A2: smaller classes = more time with each student. Can catch molehills before they become mountains.
-
Ss are capable of learning in large ratios, but seek so much attention that smaller ratios are more effective.
-
This is definitely a good point.
-
A2: 1:1 is ideal for teaching concepts but when adding social needs 1:6
-
-
A1 Kid Q had taken off all of her clothes down to underpants. She was sent back to regular SpEd class. Couldn't handle it.
-
A1. Mixed age Reggio-inspired preschool, 2.5 yrs to 4 yrs. There are currently 10 lively children in my class.
-
I think large groups can work if the teacher/student ratio is reasonable.
-
All (except band, choir) should be about 16:1. Makes possible being personal with each S & still have intrsting discussion
-
A2 Honestly no more than ten at a time. I'd take my thirty and split them into groups of ten for 1/3 of the day.
-
A2 liked 24 in most grades-think it depends on group-have had 20 feel like 50 & 32 be amazing https://t.co/MlRZcGh472
-
-
Q2: What is your thought on what is the best class size or teacher/student ratio for certain grades?
-
-
A1: I teach K-5 sped resource/inclusion. I pull small groups/individuals (1-6 kids) or go into the classroom (~22 kids)
-
Scott from Texas along with Rocky and Bullwinkle lurking as I modify a science assessment for later in week.
-
No, they didn't come and go throughout the day. Stayed in the classroom for most part.
-
I too, am a proponent of mixed age preschool.
-
-
I really think the "personal" piece is so important! Relationships really make a difference
-
Depends on the grade level. Ratio rises as grade does
-
-
Good to have you in , Scott! (and Rocky and Bullwinkle!)
-
A1 The "normal" kids seemed a lot more self assured. They were used to this class size. Kid Q went from small class to large.
-
Humanities 7 has been 9-16 kids; I've found over 12, it's harder to keep solid group unity. Could just be me.
-
Definitely, but never more than 20 ideally.
-
But I'm not convinced that it should. Teens have LOTS of needs - intellectual & personal
-
So glad to have you join us, Naghma! I would love to hear what you have to share abt class size!
-
That must have been difficult.
-
Welcome! Great to have you here!
-
A2: Grades k-6 = number of Ss is twice their ages, grades 7-12 max is 24
-
I doubt it is just you, Bill ;)
-
A2. Ideally 1:5 but realistically 1:25.
-
That's where roles change. Teens need teams that guide them in all areas T-S ratio could still be the same
-
A1 I felt so bad for her. Once she was back in smaller SpEd classroom, she did much better. Her SpEd teacher was very good.
-
-
Very difficult. We thought she could handle something she was not ready for. A few years later she could.
-
BTW--I'm doing the Happy Dance knowing my Tweets are showing up this week!!!

Faige retired kinder teacher from Los Angeles Running late
-
Q3: Why is it important to consider how a classroom is designed or configured?
-
So good to see you, Faige!
-
-
A3: Classroom environment=everything. The impression a student receives as they walk in the room might determine engagement
-
Welcome, Thomas! We're talking about class sizes and configurations.
-
Tonight's Q3. 2/22/16 https://t.co/GWUovgRd2Z
-
-
Q3: Why is it important to consider how a classroom is designed or configured?
-
-
A3: design is important to learning style. Some of my Ss need comfy, some need firm, some stand, lighting makes a diff.
-
A2 I think that classrooms should be large and spacious. Less than thirty kids in a classroom. As much 1:1 as possible.
-
A3 need to create "flow" place for whole group/small group/independent-be flexible & change often https://t.co/gjWRtpNbwh
-
-
Q3: Why is it important to consider how a classroom is designed or configured?
-
Tis true...No two students are alike.
-
Hmmm... Interesting. Well, Thomas Mision, MN College Student for Elem. Edu
-
Welcome Thomas, we are discussing class size, and how this impacts education.
-
A2 Kid Q spent part of 5th grade in a classroom not much larger than a broom closet. I was shocked.
-
A3: to ensure all Ss have access, provide more opportunities, & level the playing field.
-
Really glad you found us!
-
-
A3 Classroom design is so important ..what's best for kids to do group work, collaborate, integrate not separate and isolated
-
A3: As someone who vol. w/ a fresh teacher (been working w/ her since she started, since 2.5 yrs. long XD... Anyway 1/?
-
A3 Design and configuration both communicate core values and enable different kinds of interactions and activities.
-
Class size rarely up to us. Configuration and design we all have input
-
Access and opportunities. YES!!
-
not in my world. Each is unique and how they learn is awesome. I love seeing the light go on for them.
-
No. I'm not. Not many kids but still. Very narrow room. Kids. Teacher. Aide.
-
A3: 2/? Classroom config./design is indeed impt. esp. in class manage.
-
I agree that our values are reflected in this aspect of our education.
-
A3 changed up seating weekly-meant all Ss worked with all Ss & kept things interesting-partially due to my own ADHD
-
-
-
When they sent me to that room, I could hardly believe it. Was thinking, can't you find a real room 4 them?
-
Q4--let's get personal...
-
A3: The space needs to suit the kids. Sometimes I have to move furniture during the day because my set up isn't working.
-
-
Q4: What types of classroom configurations/furniture do you prefer & why? Tables; desks; rows; circles; couches;nooks; etc?
-
A3: 3/? Yes, config. fosters diff. interactions. moving seats after a period of time (hopefully) encourages adaptab
-
Being flexible is so important.
-
The values are important, and the resources available to represent those values is impt as well. https://t.co/kDpwEcdQqK
-
-
A3 Design and configuration both communicate core values and enable different kinds of interactions and activities.
-
-
A3 I wish were here to answer this question. He'd have a lot to say about how room designed, etc.
-
A3 In Humanities 7, opening beanbag circle meant to say "We're all in this together" & "Learning matters. So does comfort."
-
2/22/16 Q4 https://t.co/R0p39wbpf4
-
-
Q4: What types of classroom configurations/furniture do you prefer & why? Tables; desks; rows; circles; couches;nooks; etc?
-
also found struggling Ss got benefit of working with many others-those who struggled academically & socially
-
A3 4/? In addition, config. clasrm should make T more accessible to Ss and of course safety
-
I am all about comfort for the students too.
-
Each teacher's capacity influences this; as well as the dynamics of the learners. A2
-
A4: A mix of all of the above. I want classroom to be inviting. I have floor tables, solo desks, group areas, silent corners
-
A4 I have an inner and outer U in my class. It's worked for nine years but am considering a change. Inspired by orchestra.
-
Yes, I am acutely aware of that.
-
-
A4 Would like to see these egg chairs for some kids and in general comfier chairs and less desks.
-
A4:I have a padded stool with wheels and some of my kids use an exercise ball. Those are fun days. We are always head2head.
-
Yes, I like variety and choice in my room too.
-
A4: Breaking up the room into sectors helps build a sense of respect for the environment. Reading Nook, Science Corner, etc.
-
Has anyone asked whether student helping config. classrooms could be beneficial or not? Or up to T?
-
A3 I ask new T's to take time to rearrange the room to fit the activity - especially important 4 seminars to have U shape
-
Allison! I am so happy you are here!!!! --An amazing up and coming School Administrator!! https://t.co/Z0pfJtL3Ma
-
-
Each teacher's capacity influences this; as well as the dynamics of the learners. A2
-
Exercise ball...Good for the "core." Get it?? That was an attempt at an education joke.
-
A4: Bean bags a must for reading. lol
-
Experimenting with arrangements and having student involvement is essential
-
I'm a furniture mover! Different configurations for different projects. Or just to alleviate monotony.
-
A3 Besides beanbags, my Humanities 7 classroom has two tables, plus nearby reading room, office, lobby area.
-
-
You read my mind for Q5!!
-
A4: I have small group tables and yoga balls. Sometimes they work on the floor too. I would LOVE couches!
-
A4 Open space 4block building I taught Ks. Shelves w/easy access 4kids Big library area Quiet places Pillows/couches tables
-
Q5: Is it impt. to have students be involved in deciding how to configure and use classroom or school space? Why/why not?
-
A4: I encourage Ts to use everything. Better if it can be moved easily. Variety gives Ss choices.
-
A3 Safety, academic, & social configuration considerations impact student responsiveness.
-
A4 tables-able to move around easier & mix Ss https://t.co/aIBxkKzE5B
-
-
Q4: What types of classroom configurations/furniture do you prefer & why? Tables; desks; rows; circles; couches;nooks; etc?
-
A4 Throw rugs. Places to sit on the floor. Maybe some whiteboards on walls so kids could draw.
-
A5: I want my class to feel alive and things are consistently changing depending on student needs, creates buy in
-
-
Sounds like you have some great flexibility. https://t.co/43xZxanQrr
-
-
A3 Besides beanbags, my Humanities 7 classroom has two tables, plus nearby reading room, office, lobby area.
-
-
A5: for sure! Ownership over their space!
-
-
A5 Yes. Because it's their space for learning. Should feel like home not institution.
-
Prof Susan in IL joining for the 2nd half. Will scroll thru to catch up.
-
A5 Yes-when they take ownership they become more involved-creates stronger class culture https://t.co/cDSnNXoPBG
-
-
Q5: Is it impt. to have students be involved in deciding how to configure and use classroom or school space? Why/why not?
-
A4: Generally an open space in floor is always good, as well as pillows to lay on. The T I vol. evn has small tent, vry pop
-
-
Q5 for 2/22/16 https://t.co/I1Jdhce1CK
-
-
Q5: Is it impt. to have students be involved in deciding how to configure and use classroom or school space? Why/why not?
-
A5 Students offer valuable input on their experience, often see what I don't. I evolve based on their feedback/suggestions.
-
A5: I ask for feedback on our seating arrangement. I want them to feel comfortable in our learning space!
-
A5: Can't change too often, could damage normalization. Need to show with arrangements and have students reflect
-
Good evening ! Joining in for the second half :)
-
-
A5 School should be welcoming for all kids. All community. Should be beautiful inside as well as out.
-
Super to have you here! - if only for 1/2!
-
A 5. Definitely. it is their space we are talking about.
-
you're the best! good fun on a Monday night.
-
A5 student input shows its their place/room. They become part of decision making process. Empowers/motivates 4learning
-
-
A4 Would be nice to have gardens inside and out. We all need nature.
-
Ive actually nvr personally met a T who let Ss config. classrooms
-
I love having the students sit on the floor too. I've done that with HS too!
-
-
Good to see you in , Susan!
-
Sounds like a great environment! https://t.co/JzROQOZvRv
-
-
A5: I want my class to feel alive and things are consistently changing depending on student needs, creates buy in
-
A5: Teacher can also have students participate in naming areas in class to build buy in, no design but definite involvement
-
Room design can make or break a classroom for Ss meeting their needs in unconventional ways may be necessary
-
So, I cant say for sure. I would think that Ss must also understand safety reasons, could do for grt brainstorming
-
Comfort and ownership--two impt. features of a classroom.
-
Yeah, why not? We don't give older kids way to still really enjoy school. Suddenly we're all adults. Why?
-
I love sitting on the floor with kids...just getting harder to get back up 😉
-
Always good to have you here in , Paola!
-
Love the of students! ! https://t.co/bpeNFvPTBe
-
-
A5: Teacher can also have students participate in naming areas in class to build buy in, no design but definite involvement
-
brainstorming and planning/forethought, can help as a mental exercise too, when Ss help design classroom
-
Student input can certainly secure buy-in and build a trusting teacher/student rapport. Q5
-
Agreed! I always have fresh flowers in my classroom too--ALWAYS! It adds civility and beauty
-
Yeah 4 me, too, but then again I sit on the ground when I garden. Sometimes I'm asked if I'm OK.
-
A5.Learning enviros should be arranged so they maximize learning & engagement for each Ss/course, & safety like labs.
-
-
A4 Just wrote a blog about room config:
https://t.co/QFu7pfuWpY
Have redesigned my univ classrooms for more Ss interaction
-
Rock Band.... Drums in corner, next to bass, next to pianos. Vocalists facing bass; guitarist near vocalists facing drummer.
-
I like that--the naming part!
-
Yep, nvr. XD Its a safety issue, i think.
-
A5: Allow students the opportunity to claim some ownership of their own classroom.
-
I'm still managing that at 56 - hope to be able to for a while yet. :-)
-
-
I feel kids need to learn how to garden. How to see life emerging from the earth. Feel connected.
-
-
Here is Rob being a downer--Must consider that many children are negatively responsive to allergens https://t.co/xkXlLl8X7D
-
-
Agreed! I always have fresh flowers in my classroom too--ALWAYS! It adds civility and beauty
-
...and there is an opportunity to use math and integrate other subjects as well.
-
I'm 58 but look older because a lot of my hair is white especially in front.
-
Also, most Ts inherit desks from the previous millennium which limits your options.
-
Speaking of student involvement... Q6...
-
Q6: How do you involve your students in deciding how to create/utilize/change classroom or school space?
-
A5b. So yes personalized learning involves Ss input in classroom arrangement when possible (some desks can't b moved/safety)
-
A2: I believe it depends on the grade level and teacher, but the smaller the better since teachers can be more personal!
-
Yeah! Math definitely.& in 6th grd,our T grouped desks into Greek citystates durng Greece chapter for SocSt
-
YES! I am all about students in the garden--big time!!!!
-
our Superintendent has made it a priority to upgrade all furniture in all classes. https://t.co/GkibEfvyKn
-
-
Also, most Ts inherit desks from the previous millennium which limits your options.
-
Sometimes I will be sitting on the ground planting or weeding, and someone will drive by & ask if I'm OK.
-
A6 self assigned seating can be scary but can be a great strategy
-
-
A4 Now using conf/wkshp design w small interactive groups instead of large single circle.
https://t.co/YfIjuH3BA9
-
-
Q4: What types of classroom configurations/furniture do you prefer & why? Tables; desks; rows; circles; couches;nooks; etc?
-
Q6 for 2/22/16 https://t.co/ynM8ynwgDS
-
-
Q6: How do you involve your students in deciding how to create/utilize/change classroom or school space?
-
This is sooooo true. (I am LOL because that was my story!)
-
You at donors choose or something? I would donate. Great opportunity.
-
Hadnt considered old equipment, those desks seem immortal XD
-
-
A6: we don't change much, but we do use mechanical pencils which are always a treat for the little ones. LOL
-
Traditional school buildings are so sterile. We are raising children. Not robots.
-
A6: Classroom suggestion box. Class meetings. Written proposals. Challenge students to sell you their idea, think about why
-
nop. Just ups need for creativity! Make it work!
-
A6 Humanities 7 kids can configure as they wish for small group work, and for "choice time" (about 30-60" of our 1'45").
-
A6 use Ss advisory to ask opinions about how to better school-includes better use of school facility https://t.co/v812ZqTfN0
-
-
Q6: How do you involve your students in deciding how to create/utilize/change classroom or school space?
-
We see classrooms/furniture/school design/etc. as an issue. Each of our students deserves a great learning environ
-
A6 Had students brainstorm design of effective mtg spaces where they have worked. ALL said no rows.
https://t.co/DiJEcCtLEx
-
-
Q6: How do you involve your students in deciding how to create/utilize/change classroom or school space?
-
So important to teach kids how to connect with nature. We need that spiritual connection. Sense of wonder.
-
A6: Ss decide where to go for math/reading/grp work but always remind to make sure they remain focused
-
A6 Students can draft reconfig ideas then realize those ideas! Classroom-locus of control.
-
This is such a good point! The equity lens is impt to this discussion.
-
A6 For Rock Band, as long as they can hear and see each other, they're good. Unless I'm missing something!
-
are important for safety but can really inhibit creativity in classrooms sometimes makes no sense
-
A6.Ss working on designing investigations or PBL could work in room w equip/ or outside 4 testing/research if safety allowed
-
Yes, yes, yes. You are on the same soapbox that I am on!
-
Yes, yes, yes. You are on the same soapbox that I am on!
-
We try (T&I) to give Ss more responsibility, but we have a difficult group of 4thgraders
-
-
A6: Can have Ss map the classroom, find the area, and design their ideal classroom, use for ideas on rearranging environment
-
A huge problem, really a national scandal.
-
A6. Curious what options other than traditional desks/chairs in most public schools after maybe lower elementary
-
Whenever spring approaches, I remove leaves from the garden plots. I see plants sprouting, it's wonder all over again.
-
Students will benefit from a wide range of designs. If they go to college, they might sit in large lecture halls.
-
A6: Still, in general, allow Ss to choose how to utilize space works, esp. w/ beanbags & camp chairs & scoop rockers
-
A6 Indiv univ desks 20th C.
No room for laptops plus other materials.
Some may need 2 desks to work
https://t.co/XFxM0bLO5O
-
-
Also, most Ts inherit desks from the previous millennium which limits your options.
-
I'd be interested to hear how the room configuration specifically impacts those 4th graders?
-
Absolutely! We've had to move some small mountains our of teacher's classrooms so kids could move about and breathe.
-
-
my catholic kids nurtured better than non-religion kids because appreciation for differences between people.
-
A6: Scary and completely inappropriate for kids with certain special needs (i.e. social). Behavior trigger
-
Sounds like it. We all need to witness that miracle. Each spring it excites me. Never gets old.
-
So true and how often does this happen https://t.co/Wh1wt4gs7I
-
-
We see classrooms/furniture/school design/etc. as an issue. Each of our students deserves a great learning environ
-
"Variety is the spice of life."
-
Funny, too, how schools with students of colour are often the underresourced ones.
-
I taught n a trailer w/ bad furniture. Dumpster diving, hallway reject stalking.Feng shui!
-
its really interesting rite now, 3 pod config. 5 desks each. leaves front/sides/back open for work
-
A6.It's great for Ss 2see how diff. designs are more/less effective depending on the course/setting - gives authentic exper
-
I always have rocking chairs too. It is great to have Ss sit in them to calm themselves down or reflect if needed.
-
-
Delighted your school excels at that. Feel the need to stick up for mine as well.
-
Interesting.I think we all need spiritual connection, religious or not.Altho I'm an atheist, I seek that.
-
Thats admirable, I admire your own resilience! XD
-
NICE!! Yes, configurations can pertain to outside as well as inside.
-
-
As a T I like to keep materials which can create clutter - As Elsa would say 😊 https://t.co/wntpiX2hmp
-
-
Absolutely! We've had to move some small mountains our of teacher's classrooms so kids could move about and breathe.
-
oh yeah, majority are in floor or on other surfaces like shelves lining room, rarely in pods = jst realized XD
-
I don't think it's a result of the dogma, just the teaching of "be good to all" theory.
-
we are ordering 2 classroom sets of active furniture for next year. Excited to see how it impacts kids
-
Q7: What will you do tomorrow as a result of tonight?
-
We have found that clutter exists for so many children, that they deserve a great place to learn! https://t.co/7CCWsdyGut
-
-
As a T I like to keep materials which can create clutter - As Elsa would say 😊 https://t.co/wntpiX2hmp

-
Absolutely! We've had to move some small mountains our of teacher's classrooms so kids could move about and breathe.
-
Thank you and for the inspiration. Have a great week :)!
-
That is very important. Just like Rabbi Hillel and Jesus taught. Compassion is important.
-
-
17 years of kids. Ones that have a faith base at home appear more stable than those without "core values".
-
-
My students are loving the mix of wiggle cushions and yoga balls...helps them focus
-
A7 I will cherish my classroom and my kids, and keep up the daily work for social justice.
-
It will make a great difference! https://t.co/TgbRb8246e
-
-
we are ordering 2 classroom sets of active furniture for next year. Excited to see how it impacts kids
-
-
Absolutely! It's just in my area, that is the appearance. Not saying it is fact.
-
Field trip to the park. Or teach planting indoors. Science. Let them observe plants growing.
-
Going to check what I missed coming in late. Lucky the kid who sits in a classroom w/choice & voice acknowledged
-
I always get inspired at Thank you all for dropping in!
-
A7: Ask the custodian to remove 2 huge unused desks to make room for flexible seating...starting tomorrow
-
kids I teach in non religious schools learn to be good, kind and compassionate human beings
-
A6unfortunately we have a class with 36 6th gr students. Tchr had a marvelous idea of using kidney shaped tables-Ss LOVE it
-
-
Thank youfor raising this important & underappreciated area. Room design, structure, environment impact learning inbig ways
-
A7: Ask abt a chance to help design/config. classroom
-
I think it generally depends on the individual. We can have religious upbringings but...
-
Yes, I teach in a non-religious school and compassion and kindness prevails.
-
Thanks for your leadership! So happy you're on the timeline tonight! :-)
-
Q7: Continue connecting with amazing educators and build up my skills. Also check in with my students about class design
-
-
Absolutely! But someone is teaching them values. That's the point. Not religion.
-
Okay, extra work for planned for 2/23 check! https://t.co/ExZvBO5A7l
-
-
A7 Avoid the boss, for sure ;) Great chat, thanks for letting me impose!
-
true, doesn't work for all but it can work for some
-
Thanks to and all on tonight. My portable home!
-
