Hi Everyone! I'm Barbara, one of the co-hosts for #rethink_learning. I'm in Oakland, CA where it's sunny today. I'm excited to talk about Global Competence and #TeachSDGs. I'm fortunate to be an ambassador for Cohort 3. Thanks, @inspirecitizen1 for guest hosting!
Bill from STL. I do a little of everything right now it seems. Hopefully it will be streamlined in a week or so.
This gif is a perfect representation of where I’m at! 😂 #rethink_learning

So glad you are here @Shapiro_WTHS and apologize for missing #Teachpos - some family came over. How dare they when I could have been in your chat? #rethink_learning
Hello #rethink_learning looking forward to the chat tonight, great topic, happy to be here! Joining in from Pittsburgh I teach Spanish and a course in Steam emerging technology
Q1. The WHY.
Why does education for the good of all and the sustainable development of the world matter?
Where should the United Nations’ SDGs fit into the school curriculum and why? #rethink_learning#TeachSDGs
A1: it can fit in very nicely & effectively through the curriculum - identify the big ideas and develop Qs that Ss can explore - they need to learn how to ask good questions. The big ideas are the #SDGs - my blog post https://t.co/AxZyFudRwP.
#rethink_learning#SDGs
Hi! This is Sherri with @ThirstyBeesNY - back on Twitter after a brief hiatus for a few days. I'm an educator in the Catskills of NY. #rethink_learning
A1: I love starting with the WHY in #rethink_learning. This is for their future. The #SDGs provide everything kids need to learn, grow, collaborate, connect, and advocate. #TeachSDGs provide guidance, lessons and so much more.
Aaron Moniz here. Co-founder and proud supporter of Inspire Citizens. Helping to create schools frameworks to #teachsdgs, use #SDGs to develop social action projects programmatically and use professional learning and implementation plans to #rethink_learning
A1 I started teaching about it last school year, as part of our project based learning. I wanted students to be aware of some of the issues in the world and how people were dealing with them, solutions and the resources available. #rethink_learning#pbl#TeachSDGs#future4EDU
A1: this work is so important b/c we need to give voice to the next generation so they can become social change agents - we need to work together to solve some our biggest global issues. #rethink_learning#SDGs
Q1. The WHY. Why does education for the good of all and the sustainable development of the world matter? Where should the United Nations’ SDGs fit into the school curriculum and why? #rethink_learning#TeachSDGs
sharing again
#rethink_learning
A1: We know we're at a crossroads w climate change and other issues yet the lack of urgency in schools for facilitating the understanding and skills is troubling.Embedding SDGs into pre-existing curriculum and support teachers w inquiry and PBL is key. See here
Education is the chain breaker. Education (along with a host of other things) can work to end poverty, homelessness, colorism, racism, and so much more. That’s also my why. Disrupt the status quo. #rethink_learning
A1: we must remember everything has a life cycle, our earth is no different - how will we sustain and protect our resources, ideas, and people for a better future? #rethink_learning#SDGs@UN_SDG
Q1. The WHY.
Why does education for the good of all and the sustainable development of the world matter?
Where should the United Nations’ SDGs fit into the school curriculum and why? #rethink_learning#TeachSDGs
A1 - Personally I believe in a global vision of positivity in education. Too often we allow ourselves to be on an island without seeing the great ideas that exist. Promoting a shared mission of education can not only improve learning, it helps improve culture. #rethink_learning
A1: we must focus on the skills via the content - how are we supporting their critical thinking? their communication? their ideas? the examination of diff perspectives? Start with our stories! #rethink_learning#SDGs@UN_SDG
A1- SDGs matter for Ss to embrace real world issues & the meaning of equity. Empower their voices with real actions. Why care? is an important question 4 Ss to inquire to connect 4 taking action locally and globally #rethink_learning
A1: in order to do the work, we must understand each other first; build relationships, understand each other's histories and stories. What got us here? What can we do? #rethink_learning#SDGs
A2: Our Ss need to know their voice matters! They also need to know we can have meaningful conversations about social justice while still maintaining respect for all voices in the conversation. We may be the only person teaching them these life skills! #rethink_learning
Q2: Why is it our personal and moral responsibility as educators to have meaningful conversations that bring social justice to light and to take action against institutional inequities? #rethink_learning#equity#socialjustice
Yes, this --> our world really needs positivity and why not start with education. Thank you @Shapiro_WTHS for always keeping us positive. #rethink_learning
A1: Survival. The human race needs to survive and the SDGs are a means to help us figure out how to do that. This is the "real world" we are always talking about preparing our students for. #rethink_learning
A1 also important for students to be aware of more than just their community, to connect with authentic learning, understand global issues, and think about being part of the solution #rethink_learning#future4EDU#quotes4edu#TeachSDGs
A1 Edcation should be about growth, acceptance, diversity in ideas, toughts, perceptions...when we embrace differences in other people other cultures we become a smarter more advanced society #rethink_learning
A2: our students must know that they have a voice and that together enough voices can make meaningful and long lasting change for the greater good of society. #rethink_learning
Q2: The HOW. Learning to participate in interconnected, complex, diverse societies is no longer a luxury but a pressing necessity. What is your greatest success story, tool, or pressing need in preparing youth to participate & take action in our complex world? #rethink_learning
A1: we have to let go of #power and work together - we need to have a #socialjustice and #equity mindset - think about how is oppressed? Why? What role does privilege play? What biases and assumptions are we coming with? #rethink_learning#SDGs@UN_SDG
We are at the brink of a global crisis in mental health, climate change, environment. Sustainability & conscious capitalism are issues to be addressed for our own survival. Measures of success and wealth need to be defined. #rethink_learning#sdg
A1b - Part of the issue is getting others to have a global vision outside of just typical core content. Many educators find that time is lacking to explore areas outside of what they specifically teach. I think it needs to be woven in gradually, not forced. #rethink_learning
A1: My students have been interested in issues around the world. They ask "Why does that country feel that way?" and from there they take off into their own personal inquiries. It is important to be aware of the world around you & be globally minded. #rethink_learning#TeachSDGs
A1: Education for the good of all and the sustainable development of the world matter because it gives learning true meaning...taking it beyond our classroom walls and making it real for/with our students...global awareness and purposeful action can result! #rethink_learning
A1: it shouldn't be a question of where it fits into curriculum, we can frame it as a why are we not seeing how all curriculum can be linked to #SDGs - endless opportunities exist for us all to learn together for a better world. @bbray27@JenWilliamsEdu#rethink_learning
Q2: The HOW. Learning to participate in interconnected, complex, diverse societies is no longer a luxury but a pressing necessity. What is your success story, best tool, or pressing need in preparing our youth to participate and take action in our complex world? #rethink_learning
Hi Barbara, Greetings from Cambridge England. Have a great #rethink_learning discussion. I'm off to bed, need my beauty sleep. Enjoy! I know it'll be a good one! #TeachSDGs 🤗
A1/2: A1: it shouldn't be a question of where it fits into curriculum, we can frame it as a why are we not seeing how all curriculum can be linked to #SDGs - endless opportunities exist for us all to learn together for a better world. @bbray27@JenWilliamsEdu#rethink_learning
A2: Schools are the first organized structure a student sees and experiences. Its here the seeds of equity and inclusivity are sown. Educators need to model and teach these for a more equitable society. Curriculum needs to being #equity and #inclusivity as well #rethink_learning
A2 - I think the best tool is to give students as much of a dose of reality as you can. By that I mean, global news, #ExperientialLearning, #service learning, overseas service and charity work. Anything to get them outside of their bubble! #iscbrazil#rethink_learning
A2: Using Twitter allowed my students to be Song-Pals with a class in the US from Kuwait. They were able to share likes and dislikes of each song and interact with students from a different background. #rethink_learning#TeachSDGs
A1 2/2: integration of #TeachSDGs and turning it into a mindset of #ActionSDGs is what the world needs & how it can be rooted in a change for all. As educators, we need to not just teach, but model. Talk the talk/ walk the walk. @JenWilliamsEdu@bbray27#rethink_learning
Such a great point from @fablefy --> Schools are the first organized structure a student sees and experiences. Its here the seeds of equity and inclusivity are sown. #rethink_learning
Hi all! I’m joining a little late! I’m a Technology Director for a PK-8 Catholic School in Brunswick, Ohio! I still have the great opportunity to teach a few classes and run extra curricular clubs in between!#rethink_learning
A2: we need to rethink our curriculum - it needs to be much more flexible and open than it is right now - it should NOT be about grades but raising curious, competent, inquisitive, passionate kids who care about the world and each other. #rethink_learning#SDGs
#rethink_learning
A2:
I highly recommend three exceptional frameworks for helping make your curricular connections to global competence pop:
1. @OECDEduSkills Global Competence Framework (4 strands)
2. SDG targets (169 targets to pare down)
3. @Compass_Ed for sustain. thinking.
A2: Students need to realize that "school" and "education" means so much more than sitting in a building for 7 hours a day. Students need to see outside that box and know that the knowledge they are gaining will give them the power they need to change the world. #rethink_learning
A2 - For me it’s about helping teens to see the bigger picture. I’ve mentioned before that we are talking about a shift in not only what’s taught, but how it relates to the greater good of society. I try to introduce new ideas and topics slowly. #rethink_learning
A2: Racism is still all pervasive. Non-white people don’t have role models or literature that reflects their culture in the curricula. Most educators are not of color. Even when we talk global, we haven’t addressed the labyrinth of race in our own society #rethink_learning
Q2: The HOW. Learning to participate in interconnected, complex, diverse societies is no longer a luxury but a pressing necessity. What is your greatest success story, tool, or pressing need in preparing youth to participate & take action in our complex world? #rethink_learning
Lori from PA. Director of Curriculum & Technology. Our high school has embraced global competence. Must move our students beyond our small town! #rethink_learning
Absolutly and to get them out of a chair into the outside world to intereact with it and face its struggles with help when needed. Outside learning and jungle play has been a big hit over here at my school. #ExperientialLearning#rethink_learning#TeachSDGs
A2: Taking action, with our youth, in a complex world can be about making global connections by leveraging social media tools...connecting with ‘experts’, other classes, community leaders, etc. via tools like Skype, Twitter, Google Hangouts. #rethink_learning
This is such a great point. I always view Ss asking me "why" we are learning something as a huge red flag that I haven't made it relevant or clear enough to them. I think it's important to go back to the "why" daily. #rethink_learning
a2 we connected w/ schools in Argentina & Spain, initially through @edmodo SS learned so much about school & life in different countries, felt such excitement to have that authentic connection by using tools to discuss like @gosynth and @Flipgrid#rethink_learning
In reply to
@bbray27, @edmodo, @gosynth, @Flipgrid
A2- Referring Ss to community & share local, Global issues embracing to present and reflecting about their future. How can they empower their voices thru #connection 2 #learn w/ experts 4 problem solving, #designthinking by collecting data & taking actions #rethink_learning
Yes, our classrooms have grown outside of the 4 walls that hold it up. With technology, it really has given our students a global voice. #rethink_learning
A2. Pressing Need: attainment of global career-readiness competencies desirable in a global economy: self-awareness; flexibility of thinking; humility; international/open-mindedness; lifelong curiosity; social justice; sensitivity to cultural diversity; & more. #rethink_learning
Q3. The NOW. Which following reasons for global competence are most urgent in your classroom, community, or context?
-live harmoniously in multicultural communities
-thrive in a changing labor market
-use media platforms to responsibly
- support the SDGs
#rethink_learning
A2. By valuing diversity & preserving the cultural dignity of the community, a culturally responsive environment will ensue, & subsequent cultural proficiency will promote an instructionally-powerful learning climate with academically achieving & engaged Ss. #rethink_learning
Q3. The NOW. Which following reasons for global competence are most urgent in your classroom, community, or context?
-live harmoniously in multicultural communities
-thrive in a changing labor market
-use media platforms responsibly
-to support the SDGs
#rethink_learning
A3: the most current need for my population is an understanding of the outside world. My students are insulated in their community and many believe they are destined to repeat the lives of their neighbors, family members, and older siblings. #rethink_learning
A2. Taking action. Our tech ed Ss partnered with the local SPCA to solve a local problem—too many cats. The Ss are bldg cat houses for the SPCA #rethink_learning
A3: Living in a multicultural community AND thriving in changing labor market are intertwined to a great degree. It's so important Ss can live and work w/folks different than themselves as well as thrive in a labor market that will largely be automated. #rethink_learning
A3: all of them! We must:
1) have convos about race, ethnicity, discrimination, power, privilege, racism, etc
2) learn about #FinancialLiteracy and how the market drive the global economies
3) examine the biases, stereotypes, and assumptions in media 1/1
#rethink_learning
#rethink_learning
A3: Trick question
They're interdependent but each carries a unique opportunity to build relevant skills for action that is also connected to disciplinary standards. Help kids identify these 4 components and articulate their WHY.
A3: Working in a school with over 50 nationalities, I find that living and working together in a multicultural community is a priority for me. Everything can be done but not if everyone is fighting amongst themselves. #TogetherStronger#rethink_learning#TeachSDGs
A pretty neat tool I’ve found to connect kids with real world experts via technology is @neprisapp they send me a weekly email with options! #rethink_learning
A3 - For me, as a secondary teacher they all matter. Preparing students for a global job market is huge, but also dealing with technology and how we view people different from us is how our world becomes a better place. #rethink_learning
A3:
I #smh when I see some ads or watch certain commercials - who is missing from the marketing team? If we had more diversity these ads wouldn't see the light of day! #rethink_learning#SDGs 2/2
A3b: If we fail at these, the loss of jobs due to automation will instead be blamed on folks that look and sound different than themselves. We already see this happening in many places! #rethink_learning
I'm going to add one more @Shapiro_WTHS preparing kids for an uncertain world. Everything is changing so fast that the skills they will need are so different than now. #rethink_learning.
A3: we must support all #SDGs through the curriculum - education is the answer to end poverty esp among women. How are we examinign the root causes of these issues? Who is in power? Ppl w/ power will ooppress to hold onto it. Things need to change #rethink_learning#TeachSDGs
A3: There is urgency tied to each of these reasons for global competence...they are strongly interconnected! It is these reasons that should drive curriculum reform/development as GCE is not optional but ESSENTIAL! #rethink_learning
Q3. The NOW. Which following reasons for global competence are most urgent in your classroom, community, or context?
-live harmoniously in multicultural communities
-thrive in a changing labor market
-use media platforms to responsibly
- support the SDGs
#rethink_learning
A2 greatest success story is working with one of my autistic students and seeing him not need special services in the classroom starting his 8th grade year. Seeing him become a member of his SCA as treasurer #rethink_learning
A3 All of them are important, and I think that there are ways to focus on them together, definitely through #pbl at least in my experience, #rethink_learning
A3 - For us it is thriving in a changing labor market. We have just had a change in government which has the political pendulum swinging the other direction and there is much fear of changes coming to education and the corporate environment #rethink_learning

A3. While our community is not diverse, appreciating differences and different perspectives is integral for success both now and in the future. #rethink_learning
What a wonderful chat in #rethink_learning on Global Competence and #TeachSDGs. You are welcome to continue in the chat. Make sure you follow everyone to grow your #PLN.
We’re blessed with an amazing parish who has @OurMissionX and we connect with them as they make trips to the Dominican and we can make them aware of another part of our world. #rethink_learning 2/2
A2:By creating programmatic approaches to implementation, supporting Teachers, celebrating community actions, and developing empowering curriculum through empathy to action with @inspirecitizen1, all schools can make a difference #rethink_Learninghttps://t.co/Dg7qBS0y9i
Yes @ChrisQuinn64 - we need all of these and love what you wrote: :they are strongly interconnected! It is these reasons that should drive curriculum reform/development as GCE is not optional but ESSENTIAL!" #rethink_learning
Yes. Indeed. We are educating our future citizens. They are whoe people who need to be wholly taught. Everything we do is connected. Their actions affect others and the world. We're more than a textbook. 😊 Jumping in from VA. #rethink_learning
A2: Racism is still all pervasive. Non-white people don’t have role models or literature that reflects their culture in the curricula. Most educators are not of color. Even when we talk global, we haven’t addressed the labyrinth of race in our own society #rethink_learning

A3 live harmoniously in a global community. As a Special Education Teacher, I pride myself to prepare all my students to understand, value, and respect each person for their unique abilities, which has nothing to do with their race, gender, religious upbringing,#rethink_learning
Thank you! #rethink_learning
Team, DM with any needs/questions in helping you. Here's a look at how we try and empower teachers w supportive professional learning that empowers you without stressing you out. :) Be well! and let's help students become global citizens/change makers
A3: To live harmoniously in multicultural communities -disparity between cultures AND economic status (between the haves & have-nots), resistance in white communities to people of other colors & cultures moving in - we're all members of the human race. #rethink_learning
A3- Global Competencies enriches Ss to value others' perspectives, be active listeners & communicators, embrace creativity & risk taking. Critical Thinking for examing &analyzing biases, developing their characters for leadership. #rethink_learning
A2: Students need to realize that "school" and "education" means so much more than sitting in a building for 7 hours a day. Students need to see outside that box and know that the knowledge they are gaining will give them the power they need to change the world. #rethink_learning
The world doesn't stop just because we have a lot going on in our communities and country. Students need global context for their local perspective. #Rethink_Learning
A2 - I think the best tool is to give students as much of a dose of reality as you can. By that I mean, global news, #ExperientialLearning, #service learning, overseas service and charity work. Anything to get them outside of their bubble! #iscbrazil#rethink_learning
A3:the #SDGs serve as a tool to foster growth in the others. By #TeachSDGs in a real world context S's can develop skills to live harmoniously #OECD, can design and use social entrepise to thrive, and develop media skills responsibly. Ts need tools and progs to #rethink_Learning
Q3. The NOW. Which following reasons for global competence are most urgent in your classroom, community, or context?

Yes, we are @ThirstyBeesNY We have to keep working on this in schools, communities, all over. We are so much better if we get it that we are all members of the human race and are #BetterTogether#rethink_learning
Yes, all of the above. You got it. Let's do it. Let's share these ideas everywhere so the #SDGs and Global Competencies are integrated in learning. Thank you @rolat#rethink_learning
Yes. This is why I love project-based-learning. We always incorporate real world experiences in projects that also focus on meeting needs in the community & empathy. Students solve real problems through their projects, & they make a huge impact that lives on. #rethink_learning
A3 For my community that I live in now has always been 99.9 % white and in less than 10 years that has changes to 38% spanish, 17 black, 5% other it goes without saying the community is having to adjust and so are the teachers. #rethink_learning
A3s part 1: all of them are important and in the order listed. Living harmoniously and building empathy and compassion for all feeds into the changing global labor market. The one thing that jobs of tomorrow will need is Emotional intelligence and creativity. #rethink_learning
A3-part 2: That will feed into greater awareness into the conscious biases the media exploits. As we get more aware about our role on this planet, sustainability will thrive #rethink_learning
There are so many educators who are not aware of the #SDGs and we have to keep sharing and maybe even yelling from the rooftops why #TeachSDGs can foster growth and empower learners. Thank you @inspirecitizen2 for joining in #rethink_learning
Yes, @PamHall2inspire PBL and #SDGs go hand-in-hand. Starting with empathy to solve real world problems makes a huge impact they will always remember especially if it starts with the global goals. Thanks! #rethink_learning
In reply to
@PamHall2inspire, @Music4All_WISS, @RyanPersaud23, @PamHall2inspire
For the better. When you build relationships with people different than you, possible bias changes. Relationships and building community make a difference - encourages caring, compassion, love, kindness. #rethink_learning
Thanks for joining in @ThirstyBeesNY. @inspirecitizen1 came up with the questions. I am always learning and so the conversations really went deep. Appreciate your shares in #rethink_learning

Yes -- > everything is changing so fast -- just like this twitter chat, you have to think quickly, digest what was said, pull up information, and tweet it out. Wonder if young kids could do a Twitter chat? @fablefy#rethink_learning
Awww! Barbara! Your intro made me laugh and want to hug you! Sorry I couldn’t stay longer - had to feed the family! So great to hop in for a few minutes! Love your chat! #rethink_learning
