A1 PL= moving Ss to driving their own learning T role changes
A1: personalized learning helps students remove the barriers between their learning and standard based learning outcomes
Hi Charity , yes I'm at Vermilion.
A1: Responsive, individualized and attuned support for skill & knowledge development along with viewing the learner as a whole
Mine is a mix project/problem/inquiry based. https://t.co/Re2PqfF8N5
Would love to hear ideas? Is it differentiating? Is it project based?
A1 Taking into account the entire student and their needs, offering them what they need to succeed including guidance.
A1 PL is meeting the students where they are & responding appropriately
Love this Mike! https://t.co/eegA3Qw5Ow
A1: personalized learning helps students remove the barriers between their learning and standard based learning outcomes

Late to the party; I'll be in & out.
Yes it as about making learning meaningful and relevant for learners https://t.co/Xh7oj6vhw3
A1: Personalized learning is learning that is designed for individual learners, learning meaningful to them.
A1.Our Ss forget most of what we teach them. They will however remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them.
A1: Guided by a learner's goals strengths, interests, and needs
A1: a journey that takes them on a path of building their skills & habits of mind w/ their interests in mind.
the book that clarified it for me!
A1: PL is about relationships & knowing Ss not about curriculum.
Love the journey! They learn the skills and habits along the way. Habits that become their learning! https://t.co/iBCVDRQimx
A1: a journey that takes them on a path of building their skills & habits of mind w/ their interests in mind.
a!: What is PL? PL starts with learner and how they learn best!
Student mind, student voice! https://t.co/eXcr7KdwMF
A1: Guided by a learner's goals strengths, interests, and needs
is now trending in USA, ranking 50
The learner is the guide and the teacher comes along to learn with the learner! https://t.co/sbpqKfjvBE
a!: What is PL? PL starts with learner and how they learn best!
In Q2 coming up next, let's think about any resistance solutions to personalized learning.
I think of it as a road trip; sometimes we slow down, take a few extra days, a detour etc to reach our destination
welcome for jumping into the convos on Stages of at - your voice matters https://t.co/GOdiHOvQm5
A1.Our Ss forget most of what we teach them. They will however remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them.
Simple and try! Thank you Lynell! https://t.co/i5u6cgFlQY
A1: Guided by a learner's goals strengths, interests, and needs
A1: PL is putting the S in the driver seat for learning. S have voice and choice.
Yeah! is here - so glad because we need your voice about in https://t.co/o9cFhcsMnC
A1: PL is about relationships & knowing Ss not about curriculum.
...and bathroom breaks, snacks, and all of that which makes the travel comfortable and valuable. https://t.co/TOo6jRvG7x
I think of it as a road trip; sometimes we slow down, take a few extra days, a detour etc to reach our destination
Wow! The conversation around Stages of Environments right now is hopping! Join us!
A1 A way of teaching and learning that encompasses student voice and student choice within the processes.
A2: Here is a article that pushes back on PL: Should Personalization Be the Future of Learning? https://t.co/o0YvoxSB2d
A2: Here is a article that pushes back on PL: Should Personalization Be the Future of Learning? https://t.co/Vg5bgWYhbm
So important to understand that it takes time, but the results are worth it for all to grow
A1 Agree and knowing how to & each individual Ss
is someone going to be at Vermontfest? I'd love to meet you both F2F
A2 People confuse PL with differentiation and run because of past pressures and failures. They need to unlearn to learn PL!
A2: It's not the way it's always been done
A2: Sometimes push back comes from information: Check out post "Who’s Framed Personalized Learning?" https://t.co/h34mxObHlm
A2: Sometimes push back comes from information: Check out post "Who’s Framed Personalized Learning?" https://t.co/T1ZVzkNBoK
A1.In my school STEAM Room learning is often pupil led.Dont under estimate the power of pupil led learning
A2: Resistance to PL includes how can we hope to reach every learner where they are at.
Comfortable and valuable is so important. You can't personalize until you help see through a person's-eyes
A2 sometimes people don't understand it. Other times people need some coaching to implement.
A2: There may be resistance because Ts are used to being in control in the classroom and making the decisions. TTWWADI
A2: Pushback comes from a disconnect in meaning and understanding of the term. Comes off as an add-on instead of THE way
A2: Many teachers aren't open to making changes--it takes time and effort--Also fear of failure is huge in high stakes world.
Yep! This! https://t.co/BJBP2vagph
A2: There may be resistance because Ts are used to being in control in the classroom and making the decisions. TTWWADI
That is part of the problem in that there is confusion between PL and Diff. https://t.co/dX6vctMAk2
A2 People confuse PL with differentiation and run because of past pressures and failures. They need to unlearn to learn PL!
Sad, but true...then something great comes along and they pass on it. https://t.co/Hn7afCaTuw
A2: Many teachers aren't open to making changes--it takes time and effort--Also fear of failure is huge in high stakes world.
A2: many think PL is the process of removing challenge and rigor from instruction But it is about removing systemic obstacles
Afraid of giving up the driver's seat- it makes you wonder about why they NEED control, for S or themselves?
I think some might think Ss are too young to be in charge of their learning. That they can't handle it.
A2: Sometimes pushback comes from fear & from misconceptions. People need to learn what PL truly is & how it isn't "extra".
A2:There's much change in this way of facilitating learning. The shifts are for teachers difficult.
A2: Let’s face it! Change is difficult and PL means the culture needs to change!
Welcome Katie so glad you are here in - great to have your voice in the convos https://t.co/QIlXsusIN9
A1 A way of teaching and learning that encompasses student voice and student choice within the processes.
A2 more work/not enough time - I provide opportunities 4 naysayers 2 be apart of my class - many appreciate s ownership & choice
True. Some think Ss can't handle it or we are giving them too much control.
Teachers need to see the results before they trust change. Results first, then they will listen. https://t.co/Y8ZGxqnWJM
A2:There's much change in this way of facilitating learning. The shifts are for teachers difficult.
A2: Also think that t's sometimes feel unsupported by administration in many circumstances, based on discussions that I've had.
Q2: It's hard & it's a change. Resistance is a normal part of the transformation process
A bit late, but here to join!
A2 pushback often comes from those stuck in traditional modes - educate them & show benefits of PL
A2: takes 2 much time; misinfo on what it is; how assess? No resources, Ss can't do it; need to scaffold for Ts like we do for Ss
Or worse...NOT permitted by admin. https://t.co/AvJMK1bNbK
A2: Also think that t's sometimes feel unsupported by administration in many circumstances, based on discussions that I've had.
A2: It's messy, seems chaotic, less "control", accountability systems
A2: I think many are unsure of what it looks like and find it is too much to do so they resort to what they know
A2: fear of how it will impact testing ugh
so true many who criticize PL may have looked at models that focus on wrong aspects such as just tech and furniture
Great points...Misinformed often makes people run the other direction. https://t.co/L9Jd82zYlK
A2: takes 2 much time; misinfo on what it is; how assess? No resources, Ss can't do it; need to scaffold for Ts like we do for Ss
A2: Questions surround its implementation in current structures
Agreed. I think that many struggle to trust their s's. But they are capable w/ strong scaffolding and facilitation
Ts need to know they are supported; need to know expectations from leaders! https://t.co/ibTVl7NWY7
A2: Also think that t's sometimes feel unsupported by administration in many circumstances, based on discussions that I've had.
And sometimes teachers do not trust their students or for that matter, themselves. https://t.co/fJmhZ2tsah
A2: It's messy, seems chaotic, less "control", accountability systems
Many don't realize that PL is built on research. It's not just something that was dreamed up.
There's a lot of trust that is needed to let go of total control
So true. I ran into this last week. Then I shut my door and taught. https://t.co/cPfcon43NW
Many don't realize that PL is built on research. It's not just something that was dreamed up.
A2: and that focus is still on achievement & grades instead of learning & engagement
Yes, I see the opposite. Ss who meet the challenge and find choice motivating.
A2 but as they said in Star Trek is futile
A2: So many think that PL is a fad! We need better and consistent messaging on PL!
this hangs in my office since 2000. Different version
Let's share approaches to implementing personalized learning in Q3, up next!
success opens the eyes of the nay sayers. https://t.co/M4QVUzUy9p
A2: So many think that PL is a fad! We need better and consistent messaging on PL!
A2: There is often such a heavy focus on outcomes and not the learning process
A2: Pushback come from parents too. Ss don't know how to take ownership of their learning & lack agency;Ps didn't learn this way
Ironic... Need great teaching to get those outcomes. https://t.co/z4da0gsm4S
A2: There is often such a heavy focus on outcomes and not the learning process
"Just another thing" https://t.co/9bF58WSZhU
A2: So many think that PL is a fad! We need better and consistent messaging on PL!
eventually the resistant give up
- agreed - we need to teach students how to take ownership of their learning
Yes Ts are so overwhelmed w new ideas & inititiaves & think PL is just a fad - show research https://t.co/rhQP8UKaOr
Many don't realize that PL is built on research. It's not just something that was dreamed up.
There needs to be a more heavy focus on the learner! https://t.co/NSnmX7Y67z
A2: There is often such a heavy focus on outcomes and not the learning process
I hear this one every time there is PD around PL https://t.co/suayiuw0DK
A2: So many think that PL is a fad! We need better and consistent messaging on PL!
Schools can start by having a group of teachers implement PL and then invite teachers to observe and see it in action
A2 unfortunately those in power (politicians) don’t know any different
A3: I see it in 3 stages (blog post coming) & start with to give Ss & Ps a feel for it.
Yes Just showcase what Ss do, let them shine. They will lead the way if we provide environment https://t.co/RnVJNIGLnW
Yes, I see the opposite. Ss who meet the challenge and find choice motivating.
Do you use student-led conferences? I think this would lend itself well with personalized learning
Sharing is the best way to help embed a PL culture. Instead of "another" way, it can become THE way https://t.co/MhdwvM7kWV
Schools can start by having a group of teachers implement PL and then invite teachers to observe and see it in action
A3: Start with the coalition of the willing and let them be the voice of change!
maybe I should tell the finance minister how to budget! 🙄
A3: Here is an outstanding elementary PL model-Architects of their own Learning: KM Explore https://t.co/ZTXzDfjmiY
A3: Here is an outstanding elementary PL model-Architects of their own Learning: KM Explore https://t.co/Lj3uZ3eXrv
A3:Push collaboration & productive groupwork;Exhibitions; Project Based Learning;Khan academy;routines;classroom design;flipping
Genius Hour is awesome - I agree this is a great way to get started with PL https://t.co/Px4YOgC7Ad
A3: I see it in 3 stages (blog post coming) & start with to give Ss & Ps a feel for it.
Let them shine is key. They start to see what they can do and can't wait to share it.
A3 I have found that the best kept secrets are those starting behind closed doors and "accidentally" discovered by others
A3 we are starting relatively small - one grade, one content area (9th ELA) by the lift is still heavy.
A2: Not all Ts have learned to be effective or understand what PL is. Also, not all Ss are ready. Some have been spoonfed 2much
A3: By having a select few Ts attempt to implement & then share & teach others. Also by choosing just 1 subj to start in.
A3: We've launched in math. Students know standards and have personal menu to choose from which T and standards each day.
A3: Begin with a tweak and then make the leap . Start small- teacher by teacher, learner by learner.
A3 I often do my own thing behind closed doors and invite others in to see the success. They then ask for guidance.
That is a good point. It can be frustrating when report cards, time periods, etc. are in play.
Yes - Let the early adopters go and shine - They want to jump in so let them . Thanks https://t.co/WDiAI8OKM4
Schools can start by having a group of teachers implement PL and then invite teachers to observe and see it in action
And hard to get some Ss to TAKE control & believe they really can be in charge of their learning.
so important to have clear standards that can be communicated to and by students
Differentiation uses many different teaching approaches hoping something will click with each student. But that so doesn't work.
We are doing instead of faculty meeting. Ts need to experience personal learning
A3 provide a proper definition or overview, Provide PL, learning walks - show the positive outcomes.
A3: I think it starts in stages. Maybe genius hour, then choice in centers, then seating, etc.
A3 Students are great salesmen. They will tell other teachers, etc. what is working in other classes...even if it isn't wanted.
A3: Does anyone have links or examples from their school they're okay sharing? Love to see examples in motion.
I'll be presenting. Hope to see you
A3] Creating/expanding student choice in learning process! More than one road will get kids there!
or not unsupported but system not designed to give control to teachers to give to students.
A3: Encourage and support Ts in making transition. Provide training or support. Let them see it in action.
It's disappointing my administration isn't even considering PL, They're pushing for a whole different format
Let the students work out the kinks and then offer it up big time! https://t.co/8jnSscNZ5r
A3: I think it starts in stages. Maybe genius hour, then choice in centers, then seating, etc.
A3 We started w Stage one because it is still Teacher-centered - dipping toes in https://t.co/rHGLkcbpzD
A3 Students are great salesmen. They will tell other teachers, etc. what is working in other classes...even if it isn't wanted.
not for KM, but love their powerful model.
Teach them in small bites and make them hungry for more! https://t.co/VfcQVI2fUV
A3: Encourage and support Ts in making transition. Provide training or support. Let them see it in action.
Boo! Q4 is coming up up in 1 minutes in !
I agree--The system is part of the issue for sure--It all trickles down.
A3: Model what you want...personalized PD opportunities. Start w some choice and keep once opp. Ts will see the incr relevance
They need this for the rest of their lives!
This is great Ts need to see more of this in action to experience personal learning https://t.co/ZwDiupqMxf
We are doing instead of faculty meeting. Ts need to experience personal learning
That's a great idea. I would love choice in PD.
and biggest complainers about standardized tests can be biggest resisters to PL. I don't get it.
I completely agree. Half the time I have to close the door and do PL
Stopping in I really should be working on about 3 projects. Had to take a break.
Yes .... & they will! Let kids go & share, learn from each other. The Wow of learning! https://t.co/6SY3wnbtiC
Let the students work out the kinks and then offer it up big time! https://t.co/8jnSscNZ5r
A3: I think it starts in stages. Maybe genius hour, then choice in centers, then seating, etc.
A4 Students need to feel the freedom to have choice and voice before they use it- Break the habits of the closed box!
Encouraging voice and choice in learning is easy with research papers in my class. Wish we weren't restricted in books.
A4:Learners add to list of options, share creation of success criteria/outlines, give provocation & let them fly w/it, use BOBs
A4: I Love leveraging tech like for giving every student in my class a voice. not all students like raising hands
Yes, we must help them build outside the box (or blocks)
Not gonna lie, I refer to this quite a bit when lesson planning etc. Keeps me mindful and deliberate.
A4: I've started driving PBL w/ inquiry strategies--Creates opps for ss to develop their own direction https://t.co/pOUOshRqrh
A3: VBCPS Design Fellows are working toward implementing personalized learning. Watch the work unfold
A4: By giving Ss must haves to show mastery (i.e.: specific standards, vocab etc) & letting Ss choose how to do/show learning.
A2 That is a good starting point
is an awesome starting point - excellent for end of semester/end of year to dip your feet in PL
We have had this opportunity a few times & it's awesome! It's like mini .
ah but there's the rub. Who defines "within reason"? What's reasonable for 1 may be unreasonable for another.
A4: our HS requires Ss to apply to a major. Courses are grad reqs or related to major. Internships & Indep Study are huge
I hear over and over--curriculum pacing, time to implement, developing procedures/facilitting
SO TRUE. Choice means nothing if there is not a clear goal all must meet.
Yes, it truly becomes theirs! Not sure what you meant about the feels. Am I missing out on new vernacular?
Student voice allows students to truly believe that they are part of the learning process. Celebrate student thinking!
A4: The further away from a teacher centered class you are, the more natural student voice is!
A4 provide where we need 2 be & allow the S's 2 design the path they will take to get there-tell me how I will know you got it?
Schools and Ts and Admin must be willing to look @ data. Ts must be willing to see failure in own classroom in order to improve
Student feelings. Sorry. Too much time with 14 year olds. https://t.co/YdwIe5gd7F
Yes, it truly becomes theirs! Not sure what you meant about the feels. Am I missing out on new vernacular?
Yep - I'm glad your taking a break with us - your voice matters here in https://t.co/YRJAXmLQOu
Stopping in I really should be working on about 3 projects. Had to take a break.
A4: Build relationships. Talk w/ Ss. Check progress and talk about what they are doing well. Get to know them.
A4 PBL, moving up continuum of voice and choice
Data comes in all shapes and sizes. If we are looking at data, all must be fair game. https://t.co/tpjjwZ6IyE
Schools and Ts and Admin must be willing to look @ data. Ts must be willing to see failure in own classroom in order to improve
How much risk is there? That's what needs to be evaluated. If data supports strategy, shouldn't be an issue--ever.
Fabulous! Always learner feedback!
Data is essential; there is so much info in daily and formative assessments for T's next steps to guide improvement
A4] Connect kids to audience! Local! Global! Or classrooms just across the hallway! All of us need to be heard & validated!
A4: PBL implementation let's you personalize while leaving room to individualize or self-pace skills. Good starting point.
Feedback and sticky notes, two of my favorite things. ;)
Ts can be such control freaks. I have a hard 2 get Ss 2 stop asking to go to bathroom, get water, go 2 library... just go!
Implementing change across the Stages of PLE in Q5 around the bend!
I'm starting to learn about visualizing data and opportunity mapping - check out https://t.co/IlCk0cn357 https://t.co/MDwZ8zt7jo
Data is essential; there is so much info in daily and formative assessments for T's next steps to guide improvement
That is one of the things my Ss said. They love connecting and learning with others.
Yes kids love to sit & lie on the floor - who can sit in a chair all day long without fidgeting https://t.co/hBvFJNQlhM
Got the tab open to check out later!
A5 Teaching is about gradual release. Each stage builds student confidence and success. Know when to step back and watch.
A5: Shared vision, leaders build capacity and set direction by showing the power personalization for all learners- it’s magnetic
Gradual Release of Responsibility
Oh me too. It's like they are so unsure if it is really ok.
One of my favorite classes had some S's sitting in the old lab sinks. Didn't look comfy to me, but...
Such a powerful way to build collaborative learning for all involved! https://t.co/xJV3KDdwkY
A5: Shared vision, leaders build capacity and set direction by showing the power personalization for all learners- it’s magnetic
A4 an essential part of teaching - know one’s learners & our ability to listen to their needs
Yep! "Dip your toes into learning and then jump in when you're ready." I just made that up https://t.co/935r0cHjpI
A5 Teaching is about gradual release. Each stage builds student confidence and success. Know when to step back and watch.
A5: Here is a look at all 3 Stages: Teacher and learner roles change through the Stages of PLE … https://t.co/69zI0bq3IY
But not all data is equal. I try to steal from most effective Ts.
Do you have pictures? That would be fun to share https://t.co/7HgaySoprG
One of my favorite classes had some S's sitting in the old lab sinks. Didn't look comfy to me, but...
A5: By slowly giving up more control to Ss & becoming more of a coach & also a learner w Ss. By reflecting & tweaking previous
Love every word here! https://t.co/Xmsg0wVPQE

A5: These Educator Competencies For Personalized, Learner-Centered Teaching help Ts build key skills https://t.co/j1AUGHhPJb
A5. Schools need to redesign how time is used all day, everyday.stop blocking out content areas... integrate & personalize
A4 Lets teach from the heart and not from the book.Leads to lifelong learning
I love this -----> from I couldn't have said it better. Thank you! https://t.co/zwKhsdNK7x

Follow the needs of the learner, not what the book (one size fits all). https://t.co/asGWIiHxQw
A4 Lets teach from the heart and not from the book.Leads to lifelong learning
Wholeheartedly agree with this! Time to change the education system - give it a make over. https://t.co/4OX9dsVZpQ

A5 & get rid of that timetable - free the day to explore!
That district had accounts that couldn't be shared outside. I'm hoping I got them on my PC before I lost the account.
Yeah! It's Caroline we needed your voice here to explain the why - this is perfect! https://t.co/Ecq4h7XXO4
A5. Schools need to redesign how time is used all day, everyday.stop blocking out content areas... integrate & personalize
Sharing your experiences in moving forward across the Stages of PLE. in Q6 coming up!
Let alone make an outline their own way, or "use phone to get data please!" Or think creatively! Yes, yes, yes!
A who doesn't allow for mistakes doesn't allow for growth.
I didn't even bother with the textbooks this year.
I'm back on my game! Schools really need to take the plunge and innovate! For real. So talking and Just do it!
A5: Set goals & reflect often. Everyone has a starting point, but won't move w/out goals with a plan.
Don't worry! hope you can capture learning in new environments - See learning happening https://t.co/WWEoXzFh7T
That district had accounts that couldn't be shared outside. I'm hoping I got them on my PC before I lost the account.
A6 Learner led Inquiry on Chromebooks during readings of complex texts. Open the door to MORE!
Working on that w/SpEd classes now.
A6: My 1st step was offering choice in assessment formats to reach proficiency choice informed by learner profiles
A6: A little more each year. Determination to keep moving forward with the vistas in view. It’s the right horizon.
A5] Need to see Gr8 instructional models in axn! Show us, don't tell us--to shift mindset. Skillsets will follow suit!
A6 When you make the students thirsty, they will drink up the learning that they want and need.
allow positive use of phone not just for data but for making notes and adding dates to their calendar
Mine had no room, so got rid of 1/2 desks, add pillows, sit on counter/desk or share 3 to desk
Yes yes yes!! Sending high fives your way https://t.co/4U4ZKg7NUZ
I'm back on my game! Schools really need to take the plunge and innovate! For real. So talking and Just do it!
