A1) east coast of US, Excited about the road trip -Boston- Toronto , spending time with family & friends, capturing 📷 Lake George, Niagara & also the big apple #whatisschool
A1: most excited about spending time in Malaysia & Thailand over the break with friends & family. Also research for my new job role in digital learning #whatisschool
Q2 for today's #whatisschool
Should educators be encouraged / told to complete summer professional learning or given the time to forget about school and relax? Why?
Q2) Should educators be encouraged/told to complete summer professional learning or given the time to forget about school and relax? Why? #whatisschool
A2: I feel that schools should set up platforms and programs that create enough excitement for teachers to WANT to complete summer professional learning. #whatisschool
#whatisschool 2A . PD is not on a time clock! I prefer to do my PD over the Summer holiday but others throughout the year! A good book is read over time...PD is a life long journey!
A1 very excited about the big move to our new campus this summer #gesslearns and visiting my hometown Amsterdam for a very special occasion #whatisschool
A2) Summer shouldn’t be required, must be a personal decision. Teachers first need to disconnect after a busy academic year, but a little PD for maybe an hour a day on weekdays can keep your mind active over the summer. Holiday FIRST #whatisschool
A2: I believe it should NOT be an expectation but as a professional I LOVE learning so want to be inspired anyway - twitter is my 24/7 learning network #whatisschool
A2: I think it is a personal option. We have a lot of time in our hands during summer so I enjoy reading and doing courses that I cannot take during the EY. #whatisschool
A2: in my opinion, educators should do both. Take time to rest & replenish and try to read/chat/think/dream about how the next school year can be even better #whatisschool
A2. Professional reading / learning during the break is great for individual development. But, schools should be focused on collaborative professionalism not silos of best practice. There needs to be sharing of learning when school comes back. #whatisschool
A2 #whatisschool
In International Schools, Ts come from many backgrounds with different licensure needs. Many are self-directed and need their own space to learn, recharge and get ready for the coming year.
A2)academic year goes off busy in meetings, planning, documentation & emails. Summer break should be more free for educators to explore their passions. While summer learning should be encouraged, educators need to have a voice on what they want to learn #whatisschool
A2: There needs to be an element of allowing teachers to rest, relax and enjoy their time, whilst helping individuals and the school move forward in making a difference to the students in their care #whatisschool
A2 educators should be coached to reflect and decide what is best for them. Summer PD has changed my view of myself and encouraged me to set myself & set much higher expectations of myself. But this year what I need is family time #Whatisschool
Q2 for today's #whatisschool
Should educators be encouraged / told to complete summer professional learning or given the time to forget about school and relax? Why?
A2: it should be entirely up to the individual. However, if the school wants to offer a list of courses or reading that staff can chose to partake if they wish. #whatisschool
A2 I feel that teachers should be inspired to want to learn and supported to do so by their schools. It shouldn’t be be a pre-requisite. I’m looking forward to some on line courses in between R&R! #whatisschool
A2) educators should experience meaningful professional learning all year long (including summers) and be compensated like the professional that they are, it’s the best way to develop as individuals and as a system of educators #whatisschool#miched
Q2) Should educators be encouraged/told to complete summer professional learning or given the time to forget about school and relax? Why? #whatisschool
A2- Both are super important, however teachers should be encouraged to do profesional development; not required. Personal time to relax and recharge is super important! #whatisschool
A2 I don't think it should be required. Most educators will do this anyway, so I think the key is to celebrate the learning that happens and create a culture of continuous improvement #whatisschool
A2. I was just given a subscription to LinkedInLearning and I have not stopped using it for a wide range of learning. Snippets of courses each morning on the train. My work provided the tool, I choose the courses for my own development. #whatisschool
A3: I'm looking forward to completing our department summer professional reading text 'Growing Global Digital Citizens: Better Practices That Build Better Learners' by @leecrockett and @achurches#whatisschool
PD need NOT be a major production in the summer. As educators, aren’t we expected to be lead learners and look to better ourselves? And not just when on the clock? #whatisschool
A3) a MOOC at Adobe Edex, on Creating Explanimations (explanatory animations), 2 book studies, reading ‘Unmapped Potential’ from @mrkempnz 's summer reading list. Personally, I want to finish designing my 2017 scrapbook, on top of 3wk travel #summergoals#ambitious#whatisschool
A3: aside from Dignity, I’m looking forward to discovering other books, blogs and websites. Also hope to write throughout the summer as well #whatisschool
A2-2 Personally I’m doing 2 conferences, teaching one class, on Twitter a lot, doing research for dissertation, and hanging at the pool. Plus vacation out of town. Can’t sit around for too long and I’m a terrible housekeeper.
Keep sipping from the firehose!
#whatisschool
A2 Noone should be forced, but I think many of us are naturally pulled into thinking/reflecting/planning about what we do, even on breaks, because it's a big part of who we are. I am a mom, a wife, a friend, but I am also a teacher-it doesn't turn off. :) #whatisschool
A3 #whatisschool
- Piles of fiction
- Common Sense Educator (and other similar)
- Updating O365 skills to jump the Great Firewall for my new job
- Some writing & resourcing
A2 educators should be coached to reflect and decide what is best for them. Summer PD has changed my view of myself and encouraged me to set myself & set much higher expectations of myself. But this year what I need is family time #Whatisschool
Q2 for today's #whatisschool
Should educators be encouraged / told to complete summer professional learning or given the time to forget about school and relax? Why?
https://t.co/wS3tWC5ixt two weeks I retire from teaching after 38 years 32 of those as a Teaching Principal.I have Irelands only Primary School STEAM Room ready for my replacement #whatisschool
A3: inquiry is the focus this summer. Dive into Inquiry and Inquiry Mindset are the 2 already in the queue. Open to more recommendations though! #whatisschool
A3) I’ll read Teach as I pirate and take part in our SAIS summer book club with The App generation. Google cert. 2 and a Languages weekend workshop in Valencia will be my options, provided that the summer personal life allows me time to do that! #whatisschool
That’s amazing. Congratulations. You must have seen a lot of changed practices in your time as a principal. My dad was a principal and his role changed so much from when I was a kid to when I became a teacher. #whatisschool
A3) I’ll read Teach as I pirate and take part in our SAIS summer book club with The App generation. Google cert. 2 and a Languages weekend workshop in Valencia will be my options, provided that the summer personal life allows me time to do that! #whatisschool
A4: I think schools need to find out the areas that educators really want to improve on and set up a culture that loves professional learning. Reach out to teachers to find out what external or internal rewards would entice summer professional learning. #whatisschool
A4: I would encourage staff to read for pleasure. To enjoy a brain break or to do something completely different to what they normally do. Refresh. Recreate. Great for wellbeing! #whatisschool
A3 I am in the middle of 2 books: The Wild Card & Teach Like a Pirate. I have yet to read Ditch That Homework. And I am hoping to reread UDL Now, The Innovator's Mindset, & For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood. Big plans. :) #whatisschool
A4: enlighten them to how the right course or instruction and increase your desire and drive to teach, aim towards a course that you think the teacher would excel in #whatisschool
A4 just like #pubpdasia is making social media social again, getting excited about #pbl and sign up together, making it relevant to all of us #whatisschool
A4: People need buy-in and need to know the WHY - bring people along for the journey from the beginning and they will do whatever they can to make it work #whatisschool
A4- I’d try to encourage it in a way that doesn’t seem like extra work but rather, the reading/PD is there to not only improve your experience, but your students experiences as well! However, teachers should have a big say in what they want to work on #whatisschool
A4: Creating non-negotiables and expectations helps us setup requirements - next year one of our non-negotiables is that every teacher is an @AppleEDU Certified Educator #whatisschool
A4: It would be great if professional reading could be linked to personal goals set in the professional evaluation with a principal. A practical way encourage growth that’s purposeful #whatisschool
A4)sharing the 'why' - the learning could be meaningful to them. Sometimes the time required to complete a learning could be different for different people. What I can complete in two days may take two weeks for someone else. It is important to understand this factor.#whatisschool
Q5 for today's #whatisschool chat:
Who are your go-to authors, educators, communities, platforms or programs for other educators to follow, join and do over the break?
Our new lower school head issued a similar challenge at the beginning of last year. Gained traction and several Ts tweeted throughout the year #whatisschool
A5: Following specific hashtags for summer professional learning allows me to gain other perspectives and connects me to educators all around the globe. #whatisschool

Who are your go-to authors, educators, communities, platforms or programs for other educators to follow, join and do over the break?
A6: After completing my summer professional reading by @leecrockett and @achurches, I hope to be able to work with my team to implement a solid Digital Learning model at @SAISSingapore that focuses on how to utilize tech, rather than introducing more tech skills. #whatisschool
