A1= poetry lets ss be able to play with words and sayings.
A1: Poetry is all about individualism and expressing yourself. Poetry offers a ton for fig. Lang, symbolism, and theme.
A1 poetry allows students to be creative. We have a grade level poetry slam and the Ss work is amazing
That sounds cool, how does it work?
A1) Let's kids play with the SOUNDS of words (hence the need to speak well when presenting, he said alluding to Q6)
A1: Poetry fosters Ss creativity and offers great opportunity for self-expression & connections with others.
A1: I teach poetry to expose my Ss to another genre- reading and for writing. Also it encourages creative thinking.
Hello PLN! Jessie Erickson, 5th Grade, Kelly. Jumping in late.
A1: It helps develop their vocabulary
Poetry allows for creativity and playful exploration. Enjoy watching Ss experiment.
Awesome! We are having a slam next week!
How fun! I'd love to coordinate a poetry slam next year!
Hey are you looking for summer PD on Makerspaces? Join and I this summer. Spots still remain! https://t.co/XmUMBt3Ow9
A1) Poetry is often written for oral presentation--sounds are often the key part.
LOL! I got the speaking in there for ya. ;-)
do you have ss who don't want to do it?
Me! I hated poetry and hated having to teach it. Taught poorly, it is death for kids.
A1: Poetry builds resilience in kids and adults; it fosters Social and Emotional Learning.
Some years I teach it and some years I don't...
A2 This year my Ss enjoyed This Is Just To Say. Many used it as inspiration for their own writing (some steeped in sarcasm).
A2: I love sharing funny, scary, or sarcastic poems to dispel the idea that poetry is always "romantic" or "floofy"
Hello everyone. Elisa in Quito. A bit late and will probably be lurking most of the time.
Q2: Favorite poems: The Road not taken and There is No Frigate like a Book. Books: Anything by shel Silverstein; Poe, Maya Angelou.
So true! I had to find poetry I liked to truly appreciate the genre. It's not all "lovey dovey" - ha!
Yeah, I woulda LOVED that!
A2: I love sharing free verse poems with my students and novels in verse so they know poetry is more than rhyming patterns.
One of our top poems last year was about a students unusual toes! https://t.co/fdvhbdGS35
Yeah, I woulda LOVED that!
Sorry I'm late, I'm Colton Twiggs, a college student from Alabama doing research on twitter

A3 My Ss loved our read aloud, Home of the Brave.
A3: Inside Out and Back Again, is a great novel written in verse. Moving and very touching story.

We just started that one today!
Haven't read Brown Girl Dreaming yet - soon!
We analyzed the Road not taken today. Ss came up with awesome ideas. Have a favorite Frost poem?
Scholastic has a great collection of Nature Poetry with fabulous pictures that my Ss love.
My Ss loved Home of the Brave too! Part of the Lucy Calkins unit we used this year.
A3) every parent of a 5th grader should be on here jotting notes. This brain dump of titles is amazing!
Poetry Matters by is my go to before I start any focused poetry workshops.
Just started that unit...we just got the new Units of Study. Taking it for a test drive, if you will
A4) to write poetry students need inspiration, exposure & an audience. Go outside, read them a ton, & give them a forum to share
A3: Booked and Crossover won't stay on the shelves. Boys have enjoyed Beanball. I'm looking to use House Arrest as a read aloud.
A4: This article - 10 Ways to Use Poetry in Your Classroom - has some great ideas and resources. https://t.co/q6yg4bUb6u
A4: We create a Google Doc where we compile different types of figurative language that we have enjoyed. Can be used for mentors.
Been running a poetry unit that uses The Place My Words are Looking For and All the Small Words by Valerie Worth
We are LOVING March Madness in my room!
A4: Lots of good poetry and some models, T model and refer to Caulkins or Owocki for unit planning.
A5 Love doing Six-Room poems with Ss. Gets them really into free verse.
March Madness was fantastic in our class this year too. And generated such discussion among other adults and kids too!
Side note: no one ever said, "Smith, fire off a haiku to our affiliate in London." But oral communication is huge EVERY day.
A5) rhyming couplets and limericks are fun. Haiku very accessing.
I do a bracket of poems. Ss who groaned at mention of poetry now frequently argue for why faves belong in.
A5: Cinquain, Acrostic, Diamante, Limerick and free verse are my favorites.
A6: Specifically teach speaking. See some ideas here:
https://t.co/Uz2d0ih1N4 We teach haiku but not elements of speaking.
A5: Haiku, Limerick, sonnets, cinquain, diamonte; and ballads!
A6:If we were honest, we'd admit that most kid poetry recitations are quite poor.
that sounds like a fun twist on "found poetry!" Might want to give that a try this year!
A6: Practice, Practice, Practice! And show them great examples of powerful poetry read aloud.
A6: By allowing them the option to recite in a stress-free manner. Poetry Slams, Open Mic Night, Hot Chocolate house.
A6: Give them a chance to make their poem a multi-media experience. A safe way to grow and practice their voice.
A6: Letting them hear poets recite their work too!
Hi everyone sorry I'm late, trying to catch up!
A6: Side note: if kids are performing soon, video them & send to info@nationalspeakingweek.org. May 16 is Natl Spkg Week--Prizes!

A6 Teach poetry using their context; Rap & song lyrics; spoken word contests--even AD jingles that they know
A7: Blogs, audio recordings, pair sharing in the classroom.
Songs lyrics and jingles are a great gateway to poetry! https://t.co/4d7W056MOE
A6 Teach poetry using their context; Rap & song lyrics; spoken word contests--even AD jingles that they know
A7 encourage student blogs; set poems to music and let students create videos and post to the web
It is also a way to show Ss that poetry can be used as a viable career choice; copywriters make good salaries
A7: Blogs, twitter ThingLink, Animoto, Podcast, ThirtyHands, SeeSaw, and QR codes.
A8: Ss can film themselves and then watch the video with the intent of reflecting on what they are doing well and what to work on.
A7 Make poetry books. Publish. Great keepsakes.
Hot chocolate house! Love it https://t.co/ARB5QYKlFP
A6: By allowing them the option to recite in a stress-free manner. Poetry Slams, Open Mic Night, Hot Chocolate house.
Perhaps have an "Open Mic" type of event for the Ss
A8 Tech permits Ss a means to express themselves (like art & music) as such quality should never be sacrificed to implement tech
A8. Every Mac device has Photo Booth built in. Demand a video "ruff draft" before showtime.
A8: Ability to have a real world audience. blog, images to compliment poems.
A8: Use PhotoBooth, ThirtyHands or Green Screen ( DoInk) to record poems for viewing.
Perhaps share their poetry by tweeting a link to it from the class Twitter account
A8: Use Google Voice (gmail? Just add Voice). Kids call, leave "ruph draft" message. Use for figuring out which PVLEGS to teach.
I'm getting psyched for the slam https://t.co/qnhvOwDtGb
A8: Use PhotoBooth, ThirtyHands or Green Screen ( DoInk) to record poems for viewing.

A8: Use https://t.co/TDMS2HAG3V . Students record "rough drapht" & email to you. Use some in class to model good/bad.
A8 With so many Apps (some flashy) created everyday it is difficult to find apps that have fidelity and validity to support them
A9: Creating a couplet to explain a math process or a haiku from the POV of an historical person. So many possibilities!
A9: Bio poem for your fav. hist figure, free verse from point of view (slave, animal, planet), acrostic poems with vocabulary.
A9 Poetry is the expression of feelings/emotions; think how to describe a discovery in science etc now write about it
