A1: The students! Laughing with them, learning with them, getting to know them! That feeling when a lesson really hits, and we’re all grooving together. It makes my ❤️ so full! I want to watch them change the world! #gcisdchat
A1: Sooo many....but really, there is truly nothing greater than being able to make a difference and connect with a kid. That one kid that needs that one person in their life! #gcisdchat
A1: The students! Laughing with them, learning with them, getting to know them! That feeling when a lesson really hits, and we’re all grooving together. It makes my ❤️ so full! I want to watch them change the world! #gcisdchat
A1: Our community! Building relationships with our students, learning with my staff, communicating with families, connecting our community… all of the pieces that come together to do what is best for all of our students. #gcisdchat
A1: The Kids! They are my why and the reason I love teaching every single day. I love learning all their little special personalities and what makes each child excited about learning. #gcisdchat
A1 - The beautiful relationships that form! Some are easy and some take more time. It is always the BEST part. Oh how I already love my kiddos! #gcisdchat
A1: I think it's the hopefulness that exists in seeing young people's eyes open, empathy develop, and interests be spurred. No other profession gets to see that and do that every day. #GCISDchat
A1- The lifelong relationships that are formed when you invest in a child for a year of their life is the most powerful thing to me about being a teacher. Encouraging them, listening to them, loving them through hard days, and celebrating with them on great days. #GCISDchat
I’m reminded again and again that our future is in amazing hands! Our students are savvy, passionate, funny, loving, and innovative! They inspire me! #GCISDchat
A1 - With Ss - when they are REALLY into the content/lesson & you can see a high level of engagement and they don’t want to stop what you are doing!
With Ts - when you help them discover a new instructional strategy or mode of teaching their Ss!
#GCISDchat
A1: building positive relationships within the classroom!! I love the math and sharing my passion with them. The idea of helping these students mature logically and seeing their potential is inspiring!#gcisdchat
A2: I love asking the probing questions that student really have to wonder for a bit before they can answer. I also LOVE the question “Why?” #gcisdchat
Last year I got to see some of our Transition students out on their job sites- They were so proud to show me their work skills- The whole time I had to keep telling myself, "Don't cry Mary, Don't cry!!#gcisdchat
A2: Let THEM talk. Ask them about their days, ask them about their perspectives, ask them about anything. I love hearing from my students, and students love hearing from their peers. They're engaged when they feel like their voice is being valued. #gcisdchat
A2: When we ask for their input in strategies and lessons and give it to them, this not only gains engagement for that time but for the many times to follow because they know we care and want to make it meaningful. #gcisdchat
A2 get them moving, chanting, singing, shouting, whatever it takes! I also like to show them what they are doing matters and why. It provides a little motivation for those activities that aren’t so engaging! #gcisdchat
A2- A favorite way to engage my students is getting them up and moving. A little music, a fun topic to discuss, and we are ready for a fun class! #GCISDchat
A2: The best way to quickly engage students is to connect the concept to their lives or something that is current fad. I also love @Flocabulary! The videos are super engaging! #gcisdchat
A2 to engage students, I love greeting them by name, meeting them where they’re at, celebrating what they bring, and a little music never hurts! #gcisdchat
A2: Anything that is hands-on or connects to their life experience. The more I can relate content to something they do or will do in the future, the more engaged they are #gcisdchat
A2: Favorite way to quickly engage students is to find how to turn a favorite song or dance move into a learning opportunity #wewillwewillroundyou#gcisdchat
A2- Finding ways to tie in the lesson to things that interest them. Or a video clip that prompts them to think and ask questions about topic #gcisdchat
A2 I like being silly/laughing with my students, talking to them about what they like, and being super passionate about what I’m teaching! #gcisdchat#cessharp
A2: Conversation - at the lunch table, at recess, in the hallway, at dismissal, while they are working, whenever you can grab a moment... it is amazing what you can learn by starting a conversation and just hearing what students have to say. #gcisdchat
I engage students by making the learning meaningful to them and recognizing when they just need a break. Sometimes talking about your weekend in the middle of decimals makes math tolerable! #DESisBest#GCISDChat
A2: It’s essential to hear them out! It’s important to let them talk and get to know them! When students feel valued, they will pay attention to the lessons and content! #GCISDChat
Definitely! Music, a quick opportunity to share and make a connection with others goes a long way! Also...passion is contagious! Being exited makes them excited 😊 #gcisdchat
A2- A favorite way to engage my students is getting them up and moving. A little music, a fun topic to discuss, and we are ready for a fun class! #GCISDchat
Last year I saw our Transition students out on their job sites- They were so proud to show me their skills and all that they have been learning to become employable. The whole time I had to keep saying to myself, "Don't cry Mary, Don't cry!!" #gcisdchat
A3- One of my favorite tech tools is ClassKick. It totally cuts down on the amount of paper and clutter. The kids love that I can see exactly what they are doing. #gcisdchat
A2: The 2 min connect, 90 sec. Spark Plan, 60 second Relate Break we learned from our Restorative Practices has been amazing this year! These are building classroom relationships & engages them on many levels. #gcisdchat
A2 telling them a personal story they can relate to. They love hearing stories about my life and especially funny stories with my kids. They can immediately connect and want to share heir own stories and experiences. #gcisdchat
A3: @Seesaw is hands-down my favorite technology tool to use with students. So many possibilities for students to create, collaborate, give/receive feedback, and share their thinking out loud. #gcisdchat
A2 - The T being animated and excited about the lesson or the content they are teaching! Ss feed off that excitement. @GESRedmon is a master at this!
DAILY book talks (just takes 3 minutes or so!) are another way to grab and engage students!
#GCISDchat
A3: the Mac sticky note app 🙈 perfect In it’s simplicity, it helps me keep my important “to do”s right in front of my face all. day. long 😂 #GCISDChat (google keep is pretty great too!)
My favorite technology tool is when the Instructional Technology Specialists come out and share how to use favorite tech tools- So I guess that's you, Jack :) #gcisdchat
A3: @mrshunterDES shared the chrome extension Move It with us the other day! We LOVE it! It helps remind you that you need to get up move and take a break! #gcisdchat
A3: I'm a big-time Google fan. Google Slides > PowerPoint, plus you can embed PollEverywhere questions for formative assessments throughout the presentation. Google Forms rocks because you can view student responses in a spreadsheet format. #gcisdchat
A3- My favorite tech tool for my own productivity is the Toby extension for my homepage. It organizes all of my most used tabs so I can close all.the.tabs. #GCISDchat
A3 For creation--Google Drawings. It can do SO much. For management of my everything--Google Tasks (and bonus that it is now integrated into Gmail!) #GCISDchat
A3: @Seesaw is my favorite app for students to share meaningful work with an authentic audience! I love seeing them take ownership of their learning & watching their confidence grow! #gcisdchat#hessoars
A2: The 2 min connect, 90 sec. Spark Plan, 60 second Relate Break we learned from our Restorative Practices has been amazing this year! These are building classroom relationships & engages them on many levels. #gcisdchat
A3: Doesn’t really have to do with productivity, but the Just Not Sorry chrome extension is my favorite. It helps me stay mindful of diminishing myself and my message when writing professional emails. https://t.co/3c8Y9rdJVy#GCISDchat
So true! What I love about this when I taught elementary was anytime I talked about a book, the librarian would comment they all came rushing for it and they could never keep them in. That's all it would take. Simple and soo great for literacy! #gcisdchat
I recently discovered Tasks in our Gmail. I LOVE ToDo lists and being able to integrate it into my google calendar (and not lose it) has been great! #gcisdchat
A3 I cant pick just one! I love Seesaw, Google Classroom, and Overdrive for the kiddos. And for personal use I love anything Google- docs, slides, keep, drive, photos, etc. Google rocks! #gcisdchat#cessharp
A3 Google extensions/apps are my jam. From keep to talk to text to one tab (multiple websites linked on one page & can be shared), the sky is the limit. #gcisdchat
A3- Love the retro handset for students to plug into their devices to record their voice! @Flipgrid and @Symbaloo are two of my favorite tech tools for their versatility! https://t.co/1oK69BGCzl#gcisdchat
YES! Me too. https://t.co/D2POIS26AR I use this every single day, thanks to @SraLioy for sharing! I have the timer, clock, objectives and voice level all on there at once! LOVE it! #gcisdchat
A3: Doesn’t really have to do with productivity, but the Just Not Sorry chrome extension is my favorite. It helps me stay mindful of diminishing myself and my message when writing professional emails. https://t.co/3c8Y9rdJVy#GCISDchat
I just started using @trello! It’s a great way to categorize & prioritize my “need to dos”. It helps me manage my to do lists by having them in one place as opposed to 5 different sticky notes all over my classroom. #gcisdchat
A4- I love giving broad questions they can wrestle with using what they know from class. Socratic Seminars are a favorite as well as Talk a Mile a Minute. #GCISDchat
A4: I would have to go back to posing deep questions. But also having super fun lessons. My previous students still remember our Escape Classroom. #gcisdchat
A4 Give Ss time to talk & incorporate sentence stems/starters to enhance their talking. Balancing the need for some to talk and the need for Ss to discuss learning provides great modeling and opportunities to learn how to do both at any age. #gcisdchat
A4: You can't expect every student to talk to you about their learning...you need to talk to them. Ask specific questions, not just "do you have any questions?" Embed formative assessment questions throughout the lesson to know if they're getting the concepts. #gcisdchat
A4: My favorite way to get kids talking about their learning is with their “turn and talk” partners. I love listening to the conversations kids have with each other. They learn so much valuable information from each other!! #gcisdchat
A4: 3-2-1 is my favorite exit ticket. I also love a good k/w/l chart!! This year im hoping to unpack more often, so students know what the need to do and can connect what they’ve learned to the TEKS introduced in the unpacking throughout the unit #GCISDChat
A4: At the end of a lesson, I’ll ask students to snap a picture or screenshot of what they are working on. Then they use @Seesaw to explain and record their voices. They love sharing their videos. Always sparks rich discussion in the classroom. #gcisdchat
A4: Often I would take notes while my students were speaking. It allowed me to ask meaningful questions when they were done, and, hopefully, it showed them that their ideas mattered and that I genuinely cared about what they had to say. #gcisdchat
A3: I am sure you have all seen my obsession with Google Keep that I tweeted about this summer. :) I keep it all there and color code it to match my Google calendar family color coding!! #gcisdchat#organized
A4: Easy- Monitor my own talking. The person doing the talking is usually more actively engaged. I try to provide ss embedded pockets of time to talk about their learning & make connections #GCISDchat
A4: ooh I love to start class off with discussion questions around a puzzle, mind bending fact, or just a self- reflection question to get kids talking!! #gcisdchat
Helping learners organize their reflection before they share with a partner is so HELPFUL!! I love the square, triangle, circle method! 4 things that squared up with you, 3 things you are taking away, and one thing you are still going round and round about. #gcisdchat
Q2: my favorite way to quickly engage students is to change my form of communication-instead of talking I will whisper, sing or use American Sign Language. Gets their attention everytime! #gcisdchat
A4: Easy- Monitor my own talking. The person doing the talking is usually more actively engaged. I try to provide ss embedded pockets of time to talk about their learning & make connections #GCISDchat
A4: By writing to learn first! Letting Ss write to learn before putting them on the spot to talk about their learning out loud gives them a chance to explore what they think individually & build the confidence to share with the room. Write, then let's talk! #gcisdchat
A4: Just tweeted today about how I am using DyKnow not to just monitor, but to assess needs by asking questions as I teach a lesson to check for understanding! Now that everyone has school provided devices it is possible and an AMAZING tool! #gcisdchat
A4: Think-Pair-Share or Turn & Talk are some favs. I love just dropping in on conversations. @Seesaw and @Flipgrid are great ways to hear all students. #gcisdchat
A4 I love having students desk arranged in groups so that Ss are able to work together and share throughout the day-face to face conversations are priceless! #communicator#gcisdchat#desisbest
Q4 I love to use Carousel! Groups of students put answers into a baggie and then when they get back to their bag they analyze all the responses, picking what they think is the right one and what is wrong about the others! #GCISDchat
A4: Easy- Monitor my own talking. The person doing the talking is usually more actively engaged. I try to provide ss embedded pockets of time to talk about their learning & make connections #GCISDchat
Q2: my favorite way to quickly engage students is to change my form of communication-instead of talking I will whisper, sing or use American Sign Language. Gets their attention everytime! #gcisdchat
Q3: my favorite technology tool for my own productivity is either google calendar or google drive. My whole world is at my fingertips no matter where I am or what device I’m using. #gcisdchat
Don’t stress...this is year two and I’m just getting to using that because we had so many with BYOD that it wasn’t effective last year. Not anymore!! :) #gcisdchat
Ohhh, the Move it! extension seems awesome, just added it! Thanks @mrshunterDES for sharing with @HollyGrosberg so she could share it with us! #GCISDchat
A4 I love having students desk arranged in groups so that Ss are able to work together and share throughout the day-face to face conversations are priceless! #communicator#gcisdchat#desisbest
You showed me an awesome way to use those @Seesaw videos - by allowing students time to share whole group their videos which led to additional, rich conversations and peer feedback. So powerful!! #gcisdchat
A4 I love using “turn and talk” during my mini lesson to get students talking. My Ss also have partners that they meet and share with everyday. They are really starting to get to know each other as readers and writers and their conversations are great! #gcisdchat#cessharp
A4. Pairing up students to work together to create a 1 pager over their learning. Allowing students to be creative while using the academic vocabulary they’ve learned is amazing #GCISDChat
Coach Fitch, my JV football coach, (in GCISD, btw) once told me, "Nothing is ever as good as it seems, and nothing is ever as bad as it seems." I have always loved that perspective, and it has helped me through many tough situations. #gcisdchat
As much as I hate to miss the rest of the chat, I'm going to quit hotspotting my husband's phone and give it back to him! I' excited to read all the tweets tomorrow! #GCISDchat
A4: I like to have my students share with each other. A lot of time they discover something they didn’t already know when talking with a friend #DESisbest#gcisdchat
A4: Also, socratic seminar for discussions and philosophical chairs for debates. I've never seen ALL students in a room engaged in talking about their learning like I have during those! #gcisdchat
Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you are right. It’s important to lead students to believe they can, their mindset can be the difference maker. #GCISDChat
Lead from where you are.
There are a lot of things you CANT control..but what you can control how you response #positivity Also, my 1st mentor told me to greet students each day like it’s a new day. Never hold a grudge #gcisdchat
A4: I love allowing the students to be the expert on a topic or strategy and having them teach the class about it. They also enjoy anytime they get to record a video of themselves explaining their thinking. #GCISDChat#hessoars
A5: My mentor teacher told me to keep positive notes, cards, etc that you get and read them when things are not going well. You need reminders sometimes of why you're doing this and that you are good at it! #GCISDChat
A5: One that I think about a lot in regards to education is how @jimamay taught me that student culture can never surpass staff culture. As I look toward becoming a school leader, I’ll hold that dear. #gcisdchat
“Culture isn’t just one thing. It’s everything. Culture drives expectations and beliefs. Expectations and beliefs drive behaviors. Behaviors drive habits. And habits create the future.” @JonGordon11
I can't pick a favorite, but one that resonates with me often and helps to guide my choices is: You're either part of the problem or part of the solution.
It's up to you, and there's really no in between.
#GCISDchat
A6: “if there is no struggle, there is no progress” - Frederick Douglass. It’s the first thing my students see when the walk in my room! Also #ItIsWhatItIs#GCISDChat
A4: Get them talking about their learning by giving them TIME TO TALK about their learning. I have to be soo intentional about this bc there is so much to cover in so little time, but this is crucial for the learning & even more so for our ELs! #gcisdchat
A5: Kids who feel valued and loved will work hard for you, sometimes surpassing the expectations you have for them. Relationships are powerful. #gcisdchat
Q6: Also, I’ve been lucky to have been given more amazing advice throughout my career than one tweet can handle. The thing I keep closest to my brain is to remember to give the kids a little grace, and don’t take it personally. #gcisdchat
It is a task manager that integrates with your Gmail and calendar. I have a section about tasks on this Gmail hyperdoc https://t.co/1TDAxugdSe#gcisdchat
A5: Carol Dweck says “ Becoming is better than being!” - Sure resonates with us proverbial works in progress who never fit the mold anywhere! #GCISDchat
Ohhh, the Move it! extension seems awesome, just added it! Thanks @mrshunterDES for sharing with @HollyGrosberg so she could share it with us! #GCISDchat
A5 I’ve seen this quote a lot lately and really want to focus on it with my Ss this year: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” #gcisdchat#cessharp
A6: I really love PBLs and Breakout EDUs. Both of these involve problem solving and put the kids in the driver seat. Throw in a decorated classroom or crazy character and the kids love it! #gcisdchat
A6 to simply ask “are you sure?” Even if the answer is right, just causing that 5 second pause in their thinking and stop the ping-pong of answers habit we can get in to if we aren’t careful. #GCISDchat
A6 For you to teach, there has to be a relationship built first. For some students, that’s easy. For others, you have to allow a student to feel safe and loved first and then introduce content. #gcisdchat
A6- Favorite teaching strategies right now come from our AVID website! What are you doing in class? Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, or Reading? It has a strategy for them all! #GCISDchat
A6: my favorite teaching strategy is talking to my kids. If a Ss is off of their game, or feeling particularly squirrelly I sit next to them and talk. We chat for a while, and laugh, and feel a little off task, then we ease back into the assignment #GCISDchat
A8: Let the Ss lead! Have them take care of their classroom and handle tasks that will free you up to squeeze every instructional/relational minute out of your time together! #gcisdchat
Q6. When you are asking a S a question and they say “I don’t know” I come back with “if you did know what would your answer be”. Frees them up to not having to be correct with their answer. #gcisdchat
A7: This is the area I need the most help with! I'm open for suggestions @GESCStill You are are great at this! I just try to remember the phrase "GET 'ER DONE!" #gcisdchat
A7: I kept dozens of half-sheet sized class lists on hand to use when I need to keep track of ANYTHING- notes turned in, who answered questions that day, grading assignments, etc... #GCISDchat#DESisBEST
A6: I always love the Kagan strategy Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up. So many ways to use it! It gets students out of their seats and forces them to interact with each other, and they love it! https://t.co/U9mSP7Ztcp#gcisdchat
A7- Use google keep to store frequently asked ?s. You can then copy the needed content into emails for quick & professional communication to parents & colleagues #gcisdchat
A1: I love getting to know my kids, and helping them discover things about the world! Kids are imaginative, hilarious, and so open to learning! #GCISDChat
A7: Invest in planning, designing, preparing on the front end. It will enhance and maximize the quality of the learning experience for your students. It will also give you an accurate benchmark which to reflect on in adjusting your practice in moving forward. #GCISDChat
A7: @GCISD_Cheyne just said this today, teaching organization saves time! If Ss are taught an organization system, it saves Ts from having to build a plan for organization into lessons or spend time finding/keeping up with resources and materials. #gcisdchat
A7: ROUTINE! Create time and space to get what you need to get done, and make it reoccurring as often as possible. Also, actually work in your conference time (I’m still learning this one 🙃) #GCISDchat
A7: setting up daily routines so students (and paras) are not always waiting for me to give instructions. This freed me up to pull kids for individual IEP work or transition stuff for ARDs. Not every part of every day depended on my involvement #gcisdchat
A7: Have the students make name cards on the first week of school. It's great for learning names and faces. Then, every time you want to implement a new seating chart, just put the cards on the desks where you want your students to sit. It's really efficient. #gcisdchat
A7: Building relationships early. Using time to intentionally build relational capacity between yourself and your Ss and between the Ss in your class saves time having to "discipline" later on. #gcisdchat
A6: Inquiry in any/every content! I also really value broad things Concept Task Cards in science and Depth & Complexity icons for richer, deeper conceptual understanding. #GCISDchat
A7: Take care of yourself! Eat well, rest, have fun, and breathe. Taking time to care for yourself (put your oxygen mask on first) will help you best serve others and be present for your students to meet their needs. Giving yourself time saves time. #BalanceLAP#gcisdchat
A6: DIFFERENTIATE. Some may say a buzz word, but at a simple level...treat every child like your own and meet their needs where they are in every aspect. #gcisdchat
A8 Honestly, twitter chats have opened the door to thousands of resources, ideas, and a fabulous PLN. Connecting with others to benefit students is amazing. #gcisdchat
A6: Favorite Teaching Strategy...Students don't care how much you know until they know how much you care..and providing EXPERIENCES! #gcisdchat#SLEbReal#SLExD
A7 I saw a quote today that said, “90% of teaching is trying to remember where you put things.” 😂 I’m still figuring out what works for me but being organized and prepared ahead of time really helps! #gcisdchat#cessharp
A8: Drive by @DanielPink has had the greatest impact on my teaching. Figuring out meaningful ways to motivate students without dangling a reward in front of them. #gcisdchat
A8: This is a hard one bc there are so many great books! Probably the Serravallo books, Donalyn Miller books, and Jeff Anderson books. All have completely changed the way I do things and view literacy instruction. #gcisdchat
A8 Page Keely’s Formative Assessments. The thinking behind them helped me to learn how to scaffold and respond to needs in the secondary classroom. #GCISDchat
This always echos in my mind, especially on those rough days. As educators, we are but a small moment in a student’s life, but let it be a big impact. This is our chance to leave good in the world. #gcisdchat
A8: I love The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. It's message is not specific to teaching, but it offers a great reminder of what is really most important in our daily interactions with others. #gcisdchat
Jo Boaler and carol dwecks "mindset". It helped me realize bettering myself was a skill,
Not something that just happened, and it changed my teaching style to reflect that #gcisdchat
A8: I know this isn't a very original answer, but Ron Clark's "The Essential 55". It pumps me up. I just want to be as devoted to my students as he was to his. #gcisdchat
A8: J. Richardson Next Steps to Guided Reading is the best read for pulling reading small groups! Kids always demonstrated great gains in my Title I campuses! #GCISDchat@GCISDHumanities
A8: I read this book in 2010 and it exploded my mind and limited view on what might be possible in schools. Might be better ones now of course, but at the time it was a real life changer for me. (Literally because it got me new jobs to do the things in the book.) #gcisdchat
Q8: “7 steps to a language rich classroom” changed me as an educator and provided me with practical tools to make my teaching more effective! I still have two copies - 1 at home and school - and look at it often! #GCISDchat
A8: Wall of Fame- Johnathan Freedman. It is inspirational story of how @AVID4College began and it is a life changing book for anyone who believes that it it is our job to close opportunity and expectation gaps for all kids! #gcisdchat
YES! It's kind of interesting because I have found in middle school it is about asking, "What's new? How are things?" because they want to talk to you about THEIR world and day! After that...they want to dive into learning. #gcisdchat
A7: the best way to save time is by giving clear instructions. I give my kinder students pictorial directions on the board. This builds independence and frees me up to pull small groups or work one on one with struggling students. #gcisdchat
A9: My mentor teacher at my previous school, Stacey Alfred. She taught me so much that even now my students notice that when I get upset with them I “get a little ghetto...#gcisdchat
Q9: easiest question all night! @MrsA_GCISD has supported me, listened to me, cared for me, and laughed with me every step of the way for three years! I am a better teacher, person, and leader because of her! (#thanksmandy) #GCISDChat
A9: As a teacher, I had so many administrators that saw capacity in me and worked to develop and coach me to my potential. Those opportunities to try and fail and try again truly shaped me into the educator I am today! #gcisdchat@zekeboy99
A9: @lindsanderson01 had a huge impact on my growth as a teacher. She had high expectations for us but also built meaningful relationships with her teachers. #gcisdchat
A8 - #PatternsofPower by @writeguyjeff .... it’s the newest MUST HAVE book for Humanities teachers in grades 1-8!! It’s a game changer for teaching grammar that sticks! #GCISDchat
A7: Share your purpose for the why of what you are teaching, and make sure it’s relevant and connected to your students purpose for learning. #gcisdchat
A9: @DrG_at_GCISD and @BESHalliburton believed in me when I first started teaching. Their support meant the world to me! @ervin_courtney has been an incredible mentor as well and has taught me so much! #gcisdchat
A9: My Dad (my first Principal), my 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Phelps, every leader I've had, ALL of my students, my children, my staff all inspire me to continue to learn and grow. #gcisdchat
A9 So many educators have supported me along the way. Very grateful for my former fourth grade teacher, Judy Carter, & teacher Sue Ford from @OCTaylorTigers & many mentors who rock my world. #gcisdchat
A9 VALOR, my teammates, and my learning liaison have definitely helped me to become the teacher I am today! I love constantly learning and growing with these people! #gcisdchat#cessharp
