#ALedchat is a weekly chat on Twitter about education topics. It is held each Monday from 9-10pmCST. While the discussion on #ALedchat continues on Twitter well beyond our weekly one-hour chat session, this platform affords us the opportunity to extend, expand and share the conversation with an even greater audience. Educators from across the state of Alabama, and the world, can come here to find encouragement, support, resources, professional growth opportunities and advice, while providing the same to their colleagues.

A1: Getting in the trenches with Ts. Working alongside them. Shared leadership. Shared decision making, when appropriate. Collective efficacy and constant collaboration. A true partnership. #aledchat
A1: I try to celebrate the successes and efforts of my teachers more than my own. If I have opportunity to open the doors for others (figuratively and literally), I try to do so. I try to recognize collective wins, when appropriate. #ALedchat
A1: Helping others succeed will show others that the everyone being successful is more important than one person being successful. People will follow that example. Reward that behavior where collaboration is happening, so others see that attitude is valued. #ALedchat
We are a @TheLeaderinMe school so we've been through the 7 Habits. We utilize Habit 4: Think Win Win to help guide our thinking, support, and collaboration which builds trust and no competition. He is our work in action.https://t.co/WEU79Wmt21#ALedchat
A1: it's never about "me." It's always about "us." That's a clear and consistent message... "We are better together!" Lots of encouragement, celebration, & enthusiasm for US. #ALedchat

A1 As leaders, we foster the "we win" attitude by identifying and seeking out team members who share similar values and commitments to this work. When we do this, we clarify what we believe is significant and increase specificity on what clarifies as a team win #aledchat
A1: It begins with a healthy mindset that “we” is always better than “I” in a school. Empathy breeds understanding. Embracing failure in order to learn leads to success. Letting go of control strengthens trust. #aledchat

Love this & what your school is doing. I think win-win is a habit & mindset. It has to become an automatic reaction when looking for a solution. #ALedchat
A2 The pre-requisite to trust is quality time and genuine investment in team members. We are purposeful in making collaborative decisions that focus on the academic, social, emotional & positive leadership success of Ss. This time fosters genuine collaboration & trust #aledchat
A2: Definitely a work in progress! After 11 months in my current school, I'm still listening to people describe their experience at the school and rewarding those who share their ideas! #aledchat
Teacher leaders turn around PD to their respective grade levels; they attend district level CIP and other leadership meetings; Ts have protected collaborative planning; Ts represent the district at certain nat'l PDs and bring back info to the district. #aledchat
A2: Mentoring young teachers and building them up to buy in to the vision of the school. Working with them to show them that their voice is important and must be considered. That earns their trust and shows that you care about them. #ALedchat
Love the idea of thinking about mentoring as a way of validating young Ts not just so they are more effective but to encourage them to use their voice! #aledchat

A2. In the book Trust Matters it states that stability and consistency is key to buding trust. We also value our teachers by providing systems of support for them as we can expect them to pour from an empty cup. #ALedchat
A2: Personally, I have focused on building a classeoom culture of trust w/ my Ss incorpating #DesignThinking. My Se tell me that listening, allowing freedom to explore & share, and encouraging wild ideas has transformed them. So, same goes for us as Ts. #aledchat
Agree. We learn a plethora of lessons from those who contend with us. It strengthens our leadership practice and sharpens our diligent focus to support our Ss #aledchat
A2: This is continually developing and can sometimes be challenged by various difficulties, but I always seek to listen first. Trust doesn’t develop from a one-sided conversation. Conversation implies “exchange” of ideas; trust involves listening leadership. #ALedchat

A2 I'm talking from a consultant's POV who talks about building, cultivating, sustaining cultures of trust. Need passion, positivity, collaborative protocols to establish connections. #ALedchat
A2. It’s all great but if we don’t have quality relationships between administrators, teachers, and students everything we plan and try is in vain! #BuildTheFoundation#ALedchat
A2. In the book Trust Matters it states that stability and consistency is key to buding trust. We also value our teachers by providing systems of support for them as we can expect them to pour from an empty cup. #ALedchat
Building trust must be intentional. Not only must Ts trust our actions, more importantly they must trust our motives. This comes from honest dialogue. When we lead by unselfishly serving others we develop a culture of give & not take. #ALedchat
A2: Strong, consistent leadership & a building filled with professionals who value each other, collaboration, & trust. Supporting teachers by providing time for meaningful interaction is also key. #ALedchat
A3: Things like #AHSBingo. Teachers fill out bingo cards with positive things they do for others. Rewards for those with a bingo or full bingo card. #ALedchat
A3. From the top down! We can’t expect those around us to do what we refuse to do! Personally I’m a “never walk by a piece of trash and leave it guy”. #SmallThings#ALedchat
A3 “The cost of leadership is self interest” is a heck of a heavy statement. How many leaders actually lead out of service and altruism. I have seen only a very few but their leadership impact is #forever#ALedchat
A3: by setting high expectations for our Ss but also holding ourselves to those same standards. As Ts we must show integrity bc Ss can sense a fake T a mile away! #ALEdChat
A3: I try to continually emulate what I want to see in others around me. I want to act with integrity such that anyone observing me sees consistency of character that supports our school motto: “Let’s prove we care!” When I mess up, I want to resolve my mistakes. #ALedchat
A3. We are a trauma informed
school that understands the effects of trauma on children and utilizes strong stable relationships to build the resilience of students. We operate with students and each other under the #preforgiven mindset. https://t.co/pvZ5fSrlMt#ALedchat
Do we trust anymore? Hinest feedback can only happen when we trust a higher power. Honest feedback is as rare as a four leaf clover. When you find it, cherish it. #ALedchat#MoreValuableThanGold

A3: Trust is broken when we ask others to do things we wouldn't do ourselves. We have a strong leadership team that functions as a learning community. We rely on each other & model collaboration. #ALedchat
A3: Things like #AHSBingo. Teachers fill out bingo cards with positive things they do for others. Rewards for those with a bingo or full bingo card. #ALedchat

A4: As a high school educator, I remember a principal who was willing to support my after-school activities and endeavors when prioritizing funds for our school because he believed in what I was contributing to students’ experiences. #ALedchat
My HS hockey coach - he worried more about his players than he did winning (but we did want to win). My current principal has always been 100% behind the things I try in class (and pushing me to present my methods). #aledchat
A4: I have so many Edu parents! My @OHSJackets1 co-workers, my Ss, my family, and my @TeachersGuild & @TeachtoLead fam. Every one of them has played a role in raising me as an educator. They invest time, listening, advice, skills. #aledchat
A3 Modeling good behavior can also be done by checking bad behavior. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. It’s important not to let bad behavior go unchecked. It erodes trust and promotes bad behavior. #aledchat
We want the same things as our Ss. Validation, to have a voice, to be heard, to be innovative, to make a forever impact on the lives of others. Success takes an “everyone is on the team” approach. There are no benchwarmers. #Aledchat
A3 Our principals are very positive! They expect a lot from themselves and from us. We, in turn, expect a lot from ourselves and from our students! #ALedchat
A5: Resentment and lack of original thought. No true buy-in. Teachers think their voice doesn’t matter, so they don’t contribute anything or offer anything. They just go along with what they’re supposed to do. #aledchat
A5. Look at the Milgram experiment. If you just follow orders without question, bad things could happen. You don’t necessarily do what is right. Ss get left behind. #Aledchat
A5. We are reaping this now. Compliance had always been part of our educational system. It worked for some but not all. It's why we have a school to prison pipeline for many students primarily our minority boys. https://t.co/pJ438vsIPE#aledchat
A4 As @Question2Think often says “questions are important”. My best mentors have always asked me the right questions instead of telling me what to do. When we are guided we share in the learning. When we are directed the learning is one sided. #aledchat
A5: The modeled behavior & expectations would infiltrate classrooms and lead to students having to blindly follow orders. Definitely the opposite of the type of innovators we hope to graduate! #ALedchat
A5 Blindly following orders leads to group think, stymied innovation, and a lack of realizing the potential of the team. As leaders, we have a responsibility to encourage our team to engage with varying perspectives, new ideas, and actively support fresh approaches. #aledchat
A5: The effects could range from temporary to long-range damage in a variety of ways, and sadly, such institutionalized fascism could lead to paradigmatic replication on both a micro- and macro-level, peripherally infecting other institutions. #aledchat
Compliance leads to moral stagnation. I would suggest that our goal of our education system is to inspire all of our Ss to understand the paradigms of our communities and societies in order to disrupt them in thoughtful, constructive ways. #aledchat

A5: To impel orders reveals more about the weakness of the one demanding than the strength of those listening. A culture of trust begins with freedom to share and an equitable mindset about every member. #aledchat
A5 It sounds good to say that we celebrate people that question our thinking but do we celebrate it when a student questions us? What about a subordinate? Do we model this? If so, how? #ALedchat
A6. I used to have 1 rule in my classroom, “Be Respectful!” I respect you, you respect me, we respects each other, we respect ourselves! Everything then begins to fall into place! #ALedchat
A6: Though there are the occasional “disrupters,” we try to exemplify caring in a multitude of ways: about other colleagues, students, families, and community. We try to address needs when they become apparent and support one another even before most needs arise. #aledchat
A6: Listening is the most powerful tool of influence. If we want to be changemakers, we have to listen to each other in order to learn. I’m blessed w/ some amazing educators in my life. #aledchat
.@simonsinek & @BrandonBuchard would say "Helping others" is "helping ourselves": The "Truly Human" leader understands that we are HAPPIEST when we serve a purpose that uplifts our fellowman. #ALEdChat
A4 Jennifer Hogan--one of our principals-she knows I have my strengths and wants me to use those to make an impact! She also knows I have my weaknesses but supports me just the same. #ALedchat

A3 “The cost of leadership is self interest” is a heck of a heavy statement. How many leaders actually lead out of service and altruism. I have seen only a very few but their leadership impact is #forever#ALedchat
A6: Something I’ve realized is the importance of small talk. Talking to others about their family, weekend, hobbies, etc. really goes a long way towards showing others you care. When teachers know that others care about them, it builds a strong culture. #aledchat
A6 Engaging in positive influence with other team members requires conscious efforts to tap into, seek to learn from, and share the strengths of others. Mature team members recognize that when we utilize team members abilities, team capacity increases #aledchat

I challenge the assumptions of my Ss every day and force them out of a comfort zone. They do the same for me! My classroom culture is one of authentic conversations on helping each other learn & grow. We are co-learners. #aledchat
A6: We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us and don't take that for granted. We know that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves & we strive to not be the weakest link. #ALedchat
A7: I think this would be better answered by others, but I hope that others’ success during or after my support or through opportunities I have encouraged them to take would speak best to this. I would also hope that I exemplify what I want to see in others. #aledchat
A7. If I can do just one thing each day to give someone an opportunity to truly improve their situation/future through education for Ss and Ts alike... I’m winning as a leader in my book! #ALedchat#MyWhy
A7: Come in to work with a positive attitude that hopefully spreads to others. Constantly ask other teachers how I can help or if they need anything from me. #aledchat
A5 Blind following/compliance was part of old school thoughts. Innovation comes from strategic planning, consenus building, open communication. #ALedchat
A7. Showing vulnerability in my weakness while working alongside my teachers. Valuing their voice while continuing to move forward with our mission. Explain the why behind most if not everything we do. Lastly #preforgive and support teachers as people...humans. #ALedchat
A7 #InspirationMonday is the right day to voice opinions on inspiring & empowering others. In a culture of #positivity, leaders bring all to the table of thought & planning where dreams are honored and steps to move forward are welcomed. #ALedchat
A7: For my Ss, I don’t micromanage their creativity, I allow them freedom to solve problems, & give opportunity to shine. For my co-workers, I try to be a cheerleader cause they really are so amazing. #aledchat
FQ No matter your station in education, you are a leader. Let’s end tonight reminding each other why we chose to be educators and leaders. #ALedchathttps://t.co/TFoICxaDtV
Thanks #ALedchat for the convo conversation tonight. Next Monday, #NYEDChat is bringing @HappyStrobel, Happiness Coach to talk about the Science of #Happiness. JOIN US! 8pmEST.
A5 Blindly following someone when you know it isn't right could lead to disaster. That's almost as bad as silent approval. We have to trust in ourselves enough to question procedure if needed. The key is doing it in the right way! #ALedchat

FQ: I recognized the great responsibility I had to be an educator and am reminded of this daily. For me, avoiding such a role would be concession that it was others’ responsibility and not mine to shape future generations—I couldn’t ignore the need for great educators. #aledchat
