TJ from CT. Spent the day today working with administrators (principals & supers) working to support #NGSS in their districts through the @NGSXproject#NGSSchat
Would love to see some more of you all that are on here to take a turn hosting @NGSS_tweeps for a week! It is a great opportunity and we have some spots still left for the spring. Let @VogelWendi or myself know. You know you want to... #ngsschat
Hello #NGSSChat from Michigan! Crystal Brown here-- elementary STEMTech teacher, teaching a 60 min. STEM special to over 600 students Y5-5th grade. I LOVE STEM! Gibraltar Schools are striving to support Ss growth in STEM #GSDpride@superGSD
Hi sci friends! Looking forward to this evening. Wendi Vogel, Science Consultant in Kent Co, MI. West side of state. Doing a lot of course sequencing this week with local HS. #NGSSchat
Welcome, Megan. Random fact, the only pair of cowboy boots this Michigan kid ever had were purchased in Tulsa, OK. Sadly, I’ve outgrown them. #NGSSchat
I'm Veronica- and I'm a graduate researcher with @philiplbell at UW. I was previously a science teacher and biologist and am always looking for new STT topics, and ways to revise prior tools I've written. #NGSSChat
Today we are talking about STEM Teaching Tools (https://t.co/nDcTScRYby) which are designed to support equity-focused implementation of #NGSS. Funded by @NSF, they can be freely adapted & used. You should quickly browse the collection if you are not familiar with them. #NGSSchat
Excellent. So you can solve the issue of elementary science and having to compete with literacy rather than integrate it? :) That's what profs do, right? #NGSSChat

A1: Definitely integrating SEPs and CCCs in instruction (I forget the numbers). With 3D assessment tasks being so new, they’re a gewat starting point! #NGSSchat
A1. When talking with teachers who are looking for specific resources I do point them to @STEMTeachTools. Some of the pd sessions our groups find very handy and have placed on their websites! #NGSSchat
A1: the ones I'm using the most at the moment are 6, 8, and 48. The Ts in OK are LOVING them!!! These focus on modeling & productive S talk in the classroom. #ThatTableTentTho#NGSSchat
Lots of interesting and amazing moments. I can share sometime. Ts are taking it slow to get a good one in w/ quite a few dist around here. One just got approved Mon. #ngsschat
A1: So far in the classes I've observed, sequencing practices has been an amazing @STEMTeachTools that not only engage students but really create a layering of understanding in the topics that are discussed in the classroom #NGSSchat
If I have to pick just one, this one is the one I’ve used the most: https://t.co/KU9uwh8Dot “Qualities of Good Anchor Phenomenon...” I’ve been helping Ts write lessons and this tool has been great to get them started. #ngsschat
A1: I use this one often because it helps me think outside the box and not do the same format over and over again with the SEPs- https://t.co/GkAjoP4s83#ngsschat
This is especially important when thinking about how to create equitable opportunities for *all* Ss yo participate, especially emerging bilinguals who may need that extra support #NGSSchat
A1) https://t.co/z92UInjIlF is a great way to hook Ts as PD provider. I find that the resource meets immediate needs & feels comfortable to try out. After that, they seek out more on their own! #ngsschat
Just 1? Okay, def. #48 When I present this to Ts, they are blown away by the ease of use of the table tents & they immediately feel ready to get their students talking like a scientist with the help of this tool! #NGSSchat
Q2: How do you connect people to @STEMTeachTools? In face-to-face PD? PLC time? During coaching? Department meeting? Over email? Some other way? #NGSSchat
A1: Before moving the tri-state area, I was working with @lizette_burks and KS teachers. We've been fortunate to work with @STEMTeachTools and picking 1 or 2 is hard. lol . It depends on what the Ts I'm working with at the time need. #NGSSChat
I had some flight trouble but made it home finally-- just late:) I am in Philly now after leaving LI today-- weather probs on Tuesday but made it and had a great 2 days! #NGSSchat
The one I use the most is #9
How should districts and schools focus professional development when starting to implement NGSS?
https://t.co/m38CFtgkLZ#ngsschat
That is a major part of the strategy. How do you find that plays out with people? Does it keep that focus in discussion? (Truly curious. It is a hard discussion to get going sometimes.) #NGSSchat
A1: I also really like STT30 because it offers great actionable suggestions on how to integrate science and engineering practices into assessment, which is where I think 3Dness can be left behind #NGSSchat
A1: Thanks to @lizette_burks for sharing. Thank you for sharing the playlist! This article is a great reminder that "All students can and should learn complex science!" https://t.co/B1hIloP0gb#NGSSchat
#35 has been my science #oneword lately. #Talk should be purposeful and rich. I strive to foster curiosity and learning but also to foster Ss fostering the learning and curiosity of one another. #rewarding#ngsschat
That's what I hear from our Ts in OK. They want their students to discuss science in a meaningful way, but many don't know how to get started. This gives them that starting point. #NGSSchat
I think the equity focus ins't always at the forefront of people's minds. But should be! Difficult conversations are often the most important! #NGSSchat
A1: So far in the classes I've observed, sequencing practices has been an amazing @STEMTeachTools that not only engage students but really create a layering of understanding in the topics that are discussed in the classroom #NGSSchat
I find them to be very useful and productive. There’s a lot of information and suggestions on what we can do as educators to promote talk at different stages of the unit/task. STT35 and STT48 I think are particularly good #NGSSchat
I've really enjoyed watching educators approach layering practices by scaffolding lessons into students tackling simpler problems and gradually increasing the complexity in order to formulate a more well-developed understanding of what is actually going on. #NGSSchat
A1 Use learning targets a lot. Just did model lesson w/ admin and had them consider the learning target. One said he was struggling comparing to expectations in eval tool, but understood #46's point. Great moment. #ngsschathttps://t.co/5mLBUuAoyZ
A2: my go-to is during face-to-face meetings and PD. I find it helpful to go through the tool together and talk about it, preferably with some artifact to consider (eg student work, assessment, etc.) #NGSSchat
I was using a resource from STT at a workshop I was leading. I heard one teacher exclaim “WOW, this is a gold mine!” And of course she was on the STT site. #ngsschat
Q2: How do you connect people to @STEMTeachTools? In face-to-face PD? PLC time? During coaching? Department meeting? Over email? Some other way? #NGSSchat
A2: All of the above! I have shared the tools as a folder in our shared Google Drive and have shared them during our summer STEMposium. I think I may have also shared them through @CollabInCommon but if I haven’t, I will 👍🏻 #ngsschat
Q2: How do you connect people to @STEMTeachTools? In face-to-face PD? PLC time? During coaching? Department meeting? Over email? Some other way? #NGSSchat
Absolutely! It can be such a sticky point and, in all fairness, it’s not always obvious how to assess practices that are hard to capture in writing #NGSSchat
A2: Twitter is definitely a new platform for me, but I personally really like to send people resources through Facebook or by even creating a Google Doc or using Padlet. Word of mouth has never failed either! #NGSSchat
Exactly! I always spend time with the Ts thinking through what classroom management struggles they might face & allow them to think of solutions before they ever get to the problem. #NGSSchat
Good phenomena are key! And it’s always helpful to have those kinds of pedagogical moves you can have in your back pocket to promote and support rich/meaningful talk #TalkMovesFTW#NGSSchat
Q2: How do you connect people to @STEMTeachTools? In face-to-face PD? PLC time? During coaching? Department meeting? Over email? Some other way? #NGSSchat
A2: I’ve mostly been using them with science leaders as they think how to frame PL for those they reach out to, but I have given teachers who attend PL copies of #6 (talk) and #28 (phenomena) #NGSSChathttps://t.co/caVJfGVJZF
I have shared them in response to people's Qs/needs posted on the @NSTA Learning Center forums -- Great to share virtually & at face-face PD :) #NGSSchat
I used brief 43 last week in the first class of my elementary science methods course to foreground the importance of teaching science in elementary classrooms and why we should care #NGSSChat#NGSSchathttps://t.co/TeY0V46vFL

Do you use democratic practices to drive class decision making and influence learning objectives? Trying to do this more during PDs and classes. #NGSSChat
I like that the tools are constructed to be differentiated. Teachers can get an overview of a topic if that is what they need, or get a deep dive into a topic if that is what they need. #ngsschat
Q3: Some of the most popular @STEMTeachTools resources and PD modules are on formative assessment—which are part of the @ACESSEproject. How have you used them to support classroom assessment? What are your questions about 3D assessment? #NGSSchat

Yes! Sometimes we forget that it’s important to see the benefits of the pedagogical moves, ESPECIALLY when you’re tying something new and scary for the first time #itsoktobenervous#NGSSchat
A2 ) Great 4 face-to-face as Ts can participate in strategies & discuss research connected in tools. Also ❤️ to support Ts by sending them one via email that helps them in their time of need when face-to-face isn't an option! Pic from PD with 100s of Ts across OK! #NGSSchat
A1 - I refer Ts to @STEMTeachTools every chance I get! The briefs are succinct and digestable nuggets that a classroom teacher can tryout right away. I use email, face-to-face, whatever I can. #NGSSchat
One state science person reported that they keep the PDF collection handy and send them off when questions get emailed to them about #NGSS.
Here a link to where you can download the full collection as a Zip file...
https://t.co/ESNA2ZCsbI#NGSSchat
A3. Internally we are using the tools (along w/ many other resources) to help raise our awareness of what the 3-d assessments should look like. Still grappling with various components that can be built into them and how to do that. #NGSSchat
A2 I’m choosing secret option “E” for all of the above. 3D Instructional Shifts can feel overwhelming and I want to provide support however I can. #NGSSchat
Q2: How do you connect people to @STEMTeachTools? In face-to-face PD? PLC time? During coaching? Department meeting? Over email? Some other way? #NGSSchat
This one goes out to all the good people who engage in #TeacherEd, especially at the pre-service level. Always important to remind our candidates that #elemscience needs its place in the school day #NGSSchat

Believe me, it was amazing to see Ts faces when they walked into this set up! 7 different locations in two weeks traveling around the state on a bus! Great story! I'll share with you soon! #ngsschat
We are thinking about resources to support how to organize classrooms to encourage equitable talk cultures. Hopefully coming soon to #STEMTeachTools#NGSSChat
A1 One of my favorites is on facets of student thinking (https://t.co/eWHIb1qaxO) because it opens up constructive approaches to learning concepts. #NGSSchat
A3: my favorite STT for assessment is STT 37. While not directly related to assessment, it’s crucial that we practice how to see the value in students’ ideas and reasoning, especially during formal written assessments #NGSSchat
A3 ) @AcesseProject formative assessment resources have helped us work with groups of #oksci educators to build formative assessments that we share statewide! Nothing like having a small army of folks meeting on several occasions to learn and building together! #ngsschat
Q3: Some of the most popular @STEMTeachTools resources and PD modules are on formative assessment—which are part of the @ACESSEproject. How have you used them to support classroom assessment? What are your questions about 3D assessment? #NGSSchat
Thanks for those pointers! We reference some of those, but not all in our @AcesseProject resources on @STEMTeachTools. I'll have to take a close look. #NGSSchat
In reply to
@Chemteach201, @AcesseProject, @STEMTeachTools
Do you mean physical organization? So many Ts feel limited by physical space, and it can really limit equitable talk. Looking forward to this! #ngsschat
#NGSSchat I agree, I find people are more likely to use it if they have it already prepared for them. Most Ts don't have the extra time to print them out.... I am guilty of that sometimes :(
A1 One of my favorites is on facets of student thinking (https://t.co/eWHIb1qaxO) because it opens up constructive approaches to learning concepts. #NGSSchat
A3: for me it’s not about “looking the other way” or “a nugget that will get us to canonical answer.” Instead, it’s about recognizing and supporting the kinds of sense-making we want students to build on when investigating phenomena #NGSSchat
Great idea! And most STTs are aimed at multiple audiences including teachers, district staff, PD providers, and school leaders, with specific suggestions for how to integrate NGSS through each role.#ngsschat
A3 3D assessment takes more time to grade but informs instruction to move students forward. It has to be used along with formative assessment. #ngsschat
We are trying to "hold onto" our best ideas and resources around a particular topic—to allow those different levels of engagement.
I think of each tool being an idea and resource "funnel" around a specific problem or opportunity of practice. #NGSSchat
A3) We are picking up speed on this topic for our PD next year. The @AcesseProject have and will be my lifeline. I know I will get questions about grading…still have wondering thoughts about this. #ngsschat

Yes-- we did a scientists circle today with 75 teachers in a lecture organized seating room. Tremendous cooperation from participants made it work-- but we had to get creative :) #NGSSchat

A3. My question about 3D assessments: What is the rate of growth for Ss as they hone their abilities to DO science (i.e. engage in all three dim. to figure something out) Is it truly possible to measure the change over the course of one lesson, or even one year? #NGSSchat
A3: moreover, it’s about honoring who the students are and the effort that went into producing that idea/reasoning. It’s a “I see you” type of move. IMHO, #misconceptions erase that completely #NGSSchat
That is a really great point. It also is about supporting all of our learners as they go through the process of sense making and building investigations. #NGSSchat
A3: I’ve used #25 (to support argumentation) to also help teachers with argumentation. I think the big question I hear the most is how to adequately assess CCCs #NGSSChat
I have problems with STT 49 - How can mentor teachers and university educators support preservice science teachers? - the dude in the picture has quite the dirty hat :( #NGSSchathttps://t.co/16M1eHKRbH
A3: I have not used them myself yet, but we have been discussing FA recently- had a great presentation from Dr. Helen Quinn last week about this. We also looked at 3D Performance Tasks from @snapgse as well as started their PD #ngsschat
Q3: Some of the most popular @STEMTeachTools resources and PD modules are on formative assessment—which are part of the @ACESSEproject. How have you used them to support classroom assessment? What are your questions about 3D assessment? #NGSSchat
This is a valuable point. It is essential for educators to be nimble. As they begin to learn where students are and what their thoughts are they need to adjust instruction to what is appropriate for those students at that point. #NGSSchat
That’s the new design challenge for @STEMTeachTools: how to make the printouts literally fit in your (back)pocket so that you can always have them handy 😊 #NGSSchat

Physical space, safe/brave space to engage in risk taking, as well as evidence collection for teacher reflection to inform practice...all of those things in combination. #NGSSChat
We are at the 37 minute mark. Time for me to play contrarian. One caution about @STEMTeachTools is to make sure that there use doesn't turn into a lot of episodic PD without ever digging deep. Like any tool, they can be misused #ngsschat

A4 Classroom assessment helps support more equitable opportunities to develop a deep understanding. Here's a list of all of our #OER PD resources on formative assessment… https://t.co/Peq4rSITkK#NGSSchat
A3 Still working through this myself so can be hard t explain to Ts. Step 1 is realizing that questioning should require deeper thinking than the traditional fill in the blank or matching #NGSSchat
Q3: Some of the most popular @STEMTeachTools resources and PD modules are on formative assessment—which are part of the @ACESSEproject. How have you used them to support classroom assessment? What are your questions about 3D assessment? #NGSSchat
When grades can’t be eliminated, can they be based on individual growth in all 3 dimensions? I’ve been experimenting with single column rubrics to assess beginning of unit models vs. end of unit models to try this! #ngsschat
A4: again, for me STT37 is crucial. To achieve equity and justice, we have to learn to see our students as intelligent, engaged, thoughtful human beings. STT31 is the next step: dialog between Science in the classroom and community #NGSSchat
Well, you’ll see this in a couple minutes so…What tools do you want to see next? #ngsschat Post your ideas here tonight. You can also email to STEMteachingtools@uw.edu

PLS RT #NGSSchat—My take is that THE main reason to implement educational standards is to promote equity & justice for marginalized, under-resourced & erased communities. If those implementing #NGSS would consider one thing, it would be to implement these learning principles…
A4: Honestly, the fact that it calls attention to equity and builds scaffolds for equitable participation helps remind teachers that this is something that must be a centerpiece for building classroom community – no classroom community, no effective #NGSS instruction #NGSSChat
A4: My student teacher and I were just talking about this! Productive talks work well! Having students put it in their own words, share their ideas and experiences, etc., is so powerful! #ngsschat
A4: moving away from misconceptions is the first step in disrupting banking pedagogy. Honoring and engaging w/Ss’ reasoning about phenomena is how I bring Freire’s concientiçazao to The Science learning environment. Learn to question and think! #NGSSchat
It is. I like the use of progressions for this. Are Ts teasing out the SEP progressions by grade level do you know? I don't think you would or should have to...#NGSSChat
In reply to
@Chemteach201, @tiffanyneill, @STEMTeachTools, @philiplbell
A4: As a curriculum developer, I use these tools to help me build in best NGSS practices. Many times teachers feel inundated with other responsibilities (esp. K-5), so I see my role as trying to take some of that work load off of teachers. #ngsschat
A4 ALL STUDENTS CAN DO SCIENCE; I’m over “those/these kids can’t do it” and the STTs support Ts in instructional shifts that result in all Ss learning. This is a barrier I’m fighting #NGSSchat
That is where we are finding people a bit stuck. Grappling with SEP progressions and the CCC progressions. Emphasizing that they will be iterative in some senses helps but it isn't as concrete as the SBG people want or what I would have wanted if in the classroom. #NGSSchat
In reply to
@VogelWendi, @tiffanyneill, @STEMTeachTools, @philiplbell
Not really a new tool, but I would love to see examples of student work and classroom videos/lesson plans of what the tools look like when implemented. #ngsschat
Been great watching the great discussion and getting all kinds of new ideas to work with in planning units. Don't forget to let @VogelWendi or myself know when you want to host @NGSS_tweeps You know you wan to!! #ngsschat
A5: I would like to see an STT developed around translanguaging and the importance of attending to students’ expansive semiotic repertoires for sense-making and communicating #shamelessplug#NGSSchat
A4. These principles are like a mission statement for engaging all of our students - who LOVE to have the chance to question, be curious and figure stuff out. #NGSSchat
PLS RT #NGSSchat—My take is that THE main reason to implement educational standards is to promote equity & justice for marginalized, under-resourced & erased communities. If those implementing #NGSS would consider one thing, it would be to implement these learning principles…
Me to, me too. I'm also over "those teachers don't have the.... -or-can't...". Give everyone support that is appropriate for where they are at and then get out of the way-let them go. All can do all. #NGSSchat
A4 Much if not all of @STEMTeachTools strategies are used in @nextgenstoryli1. I’m very proud of Ss engagement and learning in Detroit! My Ss make me proud! #NGSSchat
Makes sense. I think that being a "mark" at the end "by the end of ..." would be ok, but different Ts. I looped, so I could have done it over 3 years in MS. #NGSSChat
In reply to
@Chemteach201, @tiffanyneill, @STEMTeachTools, @philiplbell
A5: Seems simple - but a STT about what the @STEMTeachTools are and how different roles might use them would be fantastic. So many educators get overwhelmed at first... #NGSSchat
By leveraging students' funds of knowledge, ways of knowing, and everyday experiences with science that they bring in to shape the kinds of experiences we give them as teachers to relate even more to science.#NGSSchat#NGSS#NGSSChat
A5) We have this new reading law in Michigan. I know. So, how about a tool on science and literacy practices? Maybe at different grade bands? #NGSSchat
RANDOM: Here are some thoughts in this thread I pulled together around the NGSS / Framework practices… might be some useful nuggets in there… #NGSSchathttps://t.co/GXPLfo9MHq
Given some recent conversations, I thought I would pull together some thoughts and resources related to the science & engineering practices in the NRC Framework / #NGSS vision into a thread. #NGSSchat
A5 ) #1 Question from Ts: "How do I give a grade for FAs as I'm expected to give grades." Love to see a tool with alternative strategies and one Ts can use to speak to administrators. It may or may not help me too! #ngsschat
#NGSSChat I agree Productive talk is honestly one of the most important aspect I use in my classroom daily. It is the single most important force in moving forward in SS figuring things out.
A5: California also has EP&Cs as part of our framework. Maybe more STTs about environmental/outdoor science education #NGSSchat Maybe some tools for informal educators as well??
A4 Much if not all of @STEMTeachTools strategies are used in @nextgenstoryli1. I’m very proud of Ss engagement and learning in Detroit! My Ss make me proud! #NGSSchat
PLS RT #NGSSchat ⚡️ Here are “My Top #NGSS / 3D Science Ed Tweets from 2017.” It was a busy year! I appreciate all of the great work and collaboration around these ideas and @STEMTeachTools resources—and look forward to the next year of important work!
https://t.co/Eocc0TlK6K
A5: My elementary students had a difficult time looking at the models developed by other groups and providing a helpful critique of the science ideas. I found ways to scaffold this, and I think other teachers could use help with this, too. #NGSSChat
Niece just shared that in her sci class Ss that were thought to be "stupid" or "lazy" were actually pretty smart in science. I happened to know that they just switched to #NGSS aligned @ConcordDotOrg Interactions for Freshman year. Hmmm...#NGSSChat
Me to, me too. I'm also over "those teachers don't have the.... -or-can't...". Give everyone support that is appropriate for where they are at and then get out of the way-let them go. All can do all. #NGSSchat
And how to close gaps in the progessions of each dimension - our 6-8 and 9-12 grade Ss may not have the skills from previous grade bands since NGSS is still so new. How do we fill in the blanks and help them develop skills at the correct grade band? #NGSSchat
This is another item that has been requested! What does this look like? Running t's and admin through a quick phenomena certainly helps. This could be further support. #NGSSchat
A6 ) How do we ensure there is continued funding to for this phenomenal work?!?! It has been a lifeline to so many #sci leaders and Ts who are actively making the 3D shift. #ngsschat
My work focuses on how emerging bilingual students leverage a host of linguistic (eg languages, registers, writing) and para-linguistic (eg onomatopoeias, gestures) resources when engaging in and talking about natural phenomena #NGSSchat
#ngsschat I agree. I notice it is hard to have a conversation about science in Elementary schools when these laws are so daunting to districts... Science is unfortunately not the current priority :(
A5: Appreciate the Tools around talking, but my elementary students really struggled with listening, which is vital in order to really have a scientific discussion. #NGSSChat
A5) I would like to see more examples of implementing the equity ideas we see in some of the tools. Powerful during a PD to show S work & evaluate to look for diversity valuing the sense making/representing happening for Ss! Document me is a hit! https://t.co/n83uRgB6pr#ngsschat
Agree Jill. This could be very powerful. I know several early adopters who are amazing teacher leaders helping us to facilitate the implementation process. Both selecting the right teacher leaders but also how they can be helpful in the process. #NGSSchat
Kent School District in WA just mandated 200 minutes of science each week throughout elementary school—and you can't pull kids out during that subject. #awesome#progress#itispossible#NGSSchat
A5) We have this new reading law in Michigan. I know. So, how about a tool on science and literacy practices? Maybe at different grade bands? #NGSSchat
A5: And since we get asked a lot at @K12Alliance - Teaching Learner Collaborative (Lesson study). We have new articles on this in CA Classroom Science, I would start here: https://t.co/Me6AI2YzGp#NGSSChat
A5 and A6. Seems like sometimes Ts could use a chance to do sci themselves, where they have to figure out something they don't already know the answer to. Like a scientist does. Have the chance to pay less attention to the education side and more to joy of doing sci. #ngsschat
I build on the concept of translanguaging that posits differences between languages (and ways of communicating in general) are human-constructed and political. Instead, ppl have all these semiotic resources they use for specific social functions #NGSSchat
Another idea for @STEMTeachTools Create a flowchart for common issues Educators have to help pick what tool to use. #ngsschat
(I know somebody that could help you design the flowchart) ;)
Yes!!! I know here in NY we are doing a ton of work with DEC: their parks and rec (who were amazing with the phenomena) along with invasive species and recycling ppl. They are been HUGE allies. Although with museums across the state!! #NGSSchat
