Good evening! My name is Len Ford, and I am a 4th grade ELA/SS teacher at Redwood. I integrate technology daily in language arts through the use of a number of platforms, including Google Classroom, Epic Books, and more! #WO2WorldChat
Diana DaCosta, Tech Integration Specialist for @woschools. #Thankful I am not hosting tomorrow but am taking on the role as invited guest! 1 way I integrate tech is the use of twitter to broaden my own network for professional learning #WO2WorldChat
Happy Thanksgiving Eve & thk u for joining us! I will be co-moderating tonight's chat w/ @dmdacosta13. I am Diana Ferrera, 5th Grade ELA, West Orange, NJ. 1 way I integrate tech into ELA is by offering multiple w/ Ss can share learning. Love using @padlet@Flipgrid#WO2WorldChat
Question 1 is coming up! Please remember to use our hashtag: #WO2WorldChat as you answer the questions. To stay organized, be sure to number your answers A1; A2; etc. Thrilled to have you all join us- Let's get this chat started!
A1: I could leverage a global audience to provide my students with an immersive experience by breaking down classroom walls and not limiting students' experiences to only things that are happening within my classroom. #WO2WorldChat
A1: (Continued) This could begin by connecting with other classrooms around the world to collaborate and learn. Using Twitter to connect with teachers and exports in the field, could help my students have a more immersive educational experience. #WO2WorldChat
A1: I love using the #GRA to leverage a global audience and kick-off the year. It provides Ss with a chance to connect & exposure to rich literature. The themes are usually global and filled w/ empathetic ideas. Lends itself to social action work! #avenueforchange#WO2WorldChat
A1: I have seen the impact that a global audience has on the engagement factor with work I have done with my son,@artfulouie, in recent weeks to empower him to share his passion via social media This provided him a larger audience to share his work &receive feedback #WO2WorldChat
A1: Literacy is so much more than reading+writing+speaking in todays CR. I try to provide my Ss with a global audience by teaching them 2 use Social Media, @Seesaw blog to communicate w/ others + teach Ss to be good digital citizens. #WO2world
A2: I try to experiment with new technology before using it in the CR but there have been times where the tech did not go as planned or enhance the learning. #WO2WORLD#WO2WorldChat#NCTEbeliefs
A2: My 1st yr in 5th grade I had Ss create slide shows to share their learning on Main Idea. I thought it was 'so cool' but now see that it did not enhance, expand, or deepen the learning AT ALL. It was simply replacement. Like the amazing Maya Angelou said... #WO2WorldChat
Q2:@KristinZiemke encourages us to go beyond 'that's so cool' TO 'that's so smart&we know it is because' Share a time where you used something because it was 'so cool' but later realized that it didn't enhance, expand or deepen the learning. #WO2WorldChat@ncte_cel@NCTE#NCTE18
A2: When I 1st started using tech, I would put my Ss on programs and websites, like ABCya or XtraMath. I was encouraging100% consumption and checking "Tech" off in the lesson plan. Now I subscribe to the 80/20 rule: 80% creation of content 20% consumption #WO2WorldChat
A3: I consume nontraditional texts everyday! My @Twitter feed is probably where I consume the most. I use what I learn from my from my PLN at least 1-2 times a week. I plan on using @Twitter w/ my Ss when we begin to study the @SDGsForChildren#AvenueForChange#WO2WorldChat
Q3: Belief 3-Technologies provide new ways to consume and produce texts.
Share a nontraditional text that you have 'consumed' and how it can be used with students. @thelivbits what are some texts you'd like to see in the classroom? #WO2WorldChat@ncte_cel@NCTE#NCTE18
A3: Using hashtags has become the norm for me to find info. Teaching Ss the power of the hashtag can help Ss navigate social media to find relevant information. As producers of content Ss can organize their thinking via hashtags- the 21st Century Main Idea lesson #WO2WorldChat
Q4: Belief 4- Technologies &their associated literacies are not neutral.
How can we ensure that all of our students are equipped w/ the strategies needed to access digital info with a critical, unbiased lense? @triciaebarvia@pernilleripp#WO2WorldChat@ncte_cel@NCTE#NCTE18
A4: It's important that we don't assume things. Not all Ss have access to tech at home & not all Ss are comfortable w/ video/recording. We need to teach into video creation to ensure comfort. I like @padlet & @Seesaw bc it gives Ss choice of product. #WO2WorldChat
A5: This year my 5th's are working on Social Action Projects - Ss are creating websites, blogs, and short videos to share thier voice #AvenueForChange#studentvoice#WO2WorldChat
A5: Text production has changed so drastically in the past 10 years. Social Media platforms have re-designed the way we write. Ss need to be taught micro-writing. I used https://t.co/Q3rGxkYqMU and loved it! Will incorporate this again for sure.#WO2WorldChat
A5-Use of emojis & gifs have become helpful tools to "Microwrite"&condense messages in my everyday. Leveraging these with students can help push critical thinking. My colleague, @MamaBearTeele,used emojis f/ her @twitter bio to share her passions with the world! #WO2WorldChat
A6: Again I think it is so important to teach Ss that they can effect change - empower Ss to use thier voice and allow the tech to amplify thier message #AvenueForChange#WO2WorldChat
A6: If I were a @WaltDisneyWorld Imagineer my ELA classroom would look like an art room. Immersed in design and imagination. Where Ss would see themselves as readers & writers through an artist's lens. #artinmyheart#WO2WorldChat
A6: @casas_jimmy outlines practices in #Culturize that are imperative to a positive school culture- which is the foundation for innovation and progress #WO2WorldChat
A7: My ? - How can we continue to push the envelope when it comes to teaching Ss how to use Social Media correctly within the CR? Teach Ss to use MACRO thinking + MICRO writing... so important today and not being done enough @KristinZiemke#WO2WorldChat
A6 At a K-12 PD event the other day I had a problem with the typical integrated (table/chair) school desk. I didn’t fit. Thing is, I didn’t like them in ’62 when I did fit. Pedagogy/curriculum should be experienced
#WO2WorldChat@ncte_cel@ncte#NCTE18@mrkempnz@NoApp4Pedagogy
A7: I love that @ncte_elate has published these beliefs. They are important and I see them as an avenue to "outside" of the box thinking. My question is: W/ State assessments being so important in districts, and very "inside" the box.. How do we best find balance?#WO2WorldChat
A7: We need to discuss the relevance of homework and grading. If these conversations are had at the lower levels, how we continue this to the secondary levels and higher education? #WO2WorldChat
