#6thchat is used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other sixth grade educators from around the globe. Each session we discuss a topic voted on by #6thchat participants. It's a great way to help grow your PLN and share ideas with others.
Welcome to #6thchat! Please introduce yourself, where you teach and what subjects. Tonight's chat will be 40 min. I will moderate and I'm Kristin from Lansing, Michigan. I teach ELA and SS. Welcome!
A1: Making sure everyone has an opportunity to respond to questions and comments in a learning environment. It's important because everyone processes slower. #6thchat
A1) The number of times a student is able to respond to questions, ideas, or make learning contributions in class. It is important because a teacher must intentionally plan how, when and why students will respond throughout a lesson. #6thchat
A1: OTR is the chance for students to respond to a question or challenge, it is important to give everyone a chance to respond to give them a chance to show what they know and apply it #6thchat
I may be slow to respond to folks...burned a finger cooking tonight and typing is hard/hurts. Keeping it on ice as much as possible. My apologies if I am not as "on" tonight. #6thChat
A2) I find @padlet and @PearDeck as well as Google Forms & Google classroom provide lots of opportunties for students to respond and participate in class. I like some of the tech options as it provides a forum for students who are quiet to share their voices, too. #6thchat
Hi my name is Andrea, I am from Saskatchewan, and I am a second year education student.
A1: Giving all of your students a chance to answer and participate in class discussions. Students get to respond with what they know, and other students get to learn from them. #6thChat
I've been having to refresh tweetdeck a bit more tonight. Wonder if the twitterverse is all up in a twitter about the SOTU and slowing down the works? #6thChat
A3) I like the visible thinking routines and try to incorporate these. I do this on @padlet or on google slides/docs. https://t.co/eV62cZOktB Sometimes I use these as exit strategies, too. #6thchat
A3: These are great for quick-checks, but I rely more on exit tickets or in class assignments since they can reach the quieter students as well #6thchat
A3) #6thchat I think using @peardeck is a great way to check for understanding. Displaying Ss answers on the board anonymously allows me to correct misconceptions right away although I can also check each Ss understanding after the fact, too. I also use exit tickets.
I love that you used the word misconceptions. I always feel it is okay for Ss to have them, but we can't fix them if we don't know what they are. #6thchat
I like the immediacy that some of the tech features permit me to have to respond to Ss thinking. Sometimes exit tickets have too much lag time between me reading them and then responding. #6thchat
A4) Thinking continuously develops & changes thru-out a lesson as new ideas or concepts are introduced & expanded upon. Dipping into a Ss thinking several times allows a T to monitor progress & respond to misconceptions on a timely basis. Some days I'm better than others! #6thchat
A4: W/out chances for responses you have no way to know if Ss are understanding materials or just going with the flow. Also a great way to keep engagement going, if you spend 100% time talking you will lose Ss
#6thchat
A4) I think it is important to provide a variety of opportunities. I like to have Ss respond verbally in small groups or pairs, writing and even through movement. #6thChat
Ss don’t know what they don’t know at times. This gets further masked by support. Synthesis & application has to be brought alongside with the details of instructions. They don’t have adult minds/reasoning yet. #6thchat
So true. My youngest son used to say that "Participation is overrated" in the classroom. He disliked raising his hand and being vocal, but writing out answers, etc. allows these quiet voices to be heard. #6thchat
In math often times the synthesis application is the last problem(s) in the lesson. Good to read it and break it down and drop o owledhe on the tie-in as you go. #6thchat
Got the chance to hear @NCTM president @robertqberry speak today about positioning learners as supportive contributors and learners who work and think in the public space. All these routines connect with these ideas. #6thchat
A6) I use written & verbal a bit more than action but I do try to build movement of some sort into all of my learning routines & opportunities to respond. I could do it more, however. Sometimes I worry about lost time getting Ss "settled" back & refocused #6thchat
A5: having student roles is one way to envoke total participation from each group member. They each have something specific to contribute and feel empowered #6thchat
I'm going to start using this phrase of "opportunity to respond" I think it will help teachers connect with the idea that it is up to us to create this equitable space for students. #6thchat
Looking forward to continuing to grow in my practice of improving opportunities to respond with my students! Thanks so much for inspiring me tonight! See you next week! #6thchat
Verbal is the first to develop of those 3, so even w/Ss who have expressive language challenges this works best. Mechanics (writing, planning) is the great need of the day. #6thchat
