#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Thank you for joining us tonight for #personalizedPD
Please welcome our guest moderator, Sarah Fromhold @sew1080
Thank you for leading the #personalizedPD chat!
Hello! I am Kenny Bosch, co-host and co-author of the #personalizedPD book and chat. https://t.co/UKHXahPlrl
Thank you for joining us tonight.
Take a minute and invite some friends to join us.
Meredith joining from Florida. This is the first year I am not in a school setting and I am having the time of my life with new adventures!! #personalizedPD
A1 being in PE I have a lot of freedom so I have really given up the reigns & let the students choose their activities; next year i will be implementing more 'check ins' every class #personalizedpd
A1 I got rid of my rows, abandoned my mindset that games, smiles, = engagement, and made some changes like using stations, getting out of the way and facilitate, and lots of #stuchoice and #pbl#PersonalizedPD
A1: As a digital coach, I hope that I have provided the resources and support so that my teachers could “pump up” their activities making them more engaging. #personalizedPD
A1: I’m in classrooms more than I’m not. I model lessons, co-teach, and take time providing feedback. These, I hope, support S engagement. We have some amazing Ts in my district. #personalizedPD
A1: When I started teaching 10 years ago, I had no textbooks and was terrified! Now I am thankful that I was thrown to the wolves. I have developed a great blended learning style that is project based. The Ss love being invested in their learning and stay engaged. #personalizedpd

Our instructional coaches encourage sharing ideas about engagement, but our staff are also very innovative with their lessons to heighten engagement with student voice and choice. #PersonalizedPD
A1 I really had to change my way of thinking and allow more choice. Students like to move...plan lessons where they can move. Want a more tech...incorporate more. Growing as an educator improved the engagement. #personalizedPD
A1: To encourage engagement, I guide my students in feeling competent and capable so they take ownership over their work. Inspired by the #reggioemilia classroom approach #personalizedpd
A1: as a SpEd Math coach I have really tried incorporating manipulatives and engaging Ss in discovery. Very hard sell to Ts. Going to offer more training this summer, already have to include a 2nd day so things are moving in the right direction I think. #personalizedpd
Feeling burned out as an educator? You don’t have to stay that way! Reignite your passion with my new book: Burned Out, Beaten Up, Fighting Back: A Call To Action For America’s Public Educators! Let’s get to work. Order it on Amazon: https://t.co/BodQc4FTqt#call2action4ed
I had the same problem, and was terrified. The next year they said they were ordering textbooks and I told them not to. It was the best thing for my career #personalizedPD
Here we are!! Jumping with excitement each week. Have you ever seen such a motivated team? Hope no one thinks I am insinuating they look like a penguin ::grin::: #personalizedPD@Rdene915
A1: I put the learning back into my students hands. I haven’t taught in front of my class in 3 weeks. Ive been teaching with self paced playlists, video, and @goformative. Check out how I did it. https://t.co/ATxyfHeDyn#personalizedPD
A1: I survey the S’s often about different tech tools we use or protocols/ group work/ texts we read. If they like it and are performing well on assessments they are def engaged! A lot of my Do Nows are how did it go yesterday explain #PersonalizedPD
I witnessed this during Language Arts class yesterday when a 20 minute discussion of a book was entirely led by the students. Very powerful. #personalizedPD
Something that I have noticed (and have had to be okay with) is engagement can be noisy! Noise often = collab, excitement, and creativity come to life! #personalizedpd
One of the biggest keys to student engagement is the level of learning. Are they doing more critical thinking? Or is it drill & kill. Adding tech to drill & kill doesn't make it any better. #PersonalizedPD
Authentic Ss engagement can look different for each student. It sounds like the topic they are engaged in. " Thanks for sharing, but lets get back on topic" is my favorite. #personalizedPD
I worked with some teachers on using video instruction and having their Ss create video responses. It had its ups and downs to start out, but it was very positive in the end #personalizedpd
A2: I think one of the most telling signs of authentic engagement is the asking of questions...so often we focus on our Ts asking great ?s ...when Ss are authentically engaged they are the ones brimming with curiosity! #personalizedPD
A2 Different all the time, and depends on activity, Ss can be chaotic or quiet, they are leading activities, moving through and you can feel it #PersonalizedPD
A2: Authentic engagement sounds like students questioning and sharing. It looks like the adult in the room facilitating and monitoring rather than standing in the front of the room dictating. #personalizedPD
Sharing this graphic for reflection as there are different levels of student engagement. Perhaps you'll save it and tomorrow, pull it up and reflect on which stage your students were performing at? #personalizedPD
A2: I just did a great 4 part project on building a ramp to wrap up surface area and volume. Students ended up designing their own ramp and pricing out the materials. Engagement sounded and looked like argument/discussion/collaboration #personalizedPD
Q2: Compliance doesn't always equal engagement. Collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking are often noisy. Engaged kids are happy, ask questions, and do more work than the T. #personalizedPD
A2: When my students are talking about activities/ texts we did in class with other students o know they are engaged. It is hard to get them to the level where something is memorable but I hope it happens for one portion of every lesson at least #PersonalizedPD
A2: Busy work vs. Real Work. Students engaged authentically will have a goal that they are working towards vs. something that is just "keeping them quiet" #personalizedpd
I have all of the time in the world to read what others post on twitter, save it when I run into something excellent so I can share it with others later. When you acknowledge that it was helpful it makes all of my time spent worth it!! #personalizedPD
A2: Ss are going to be engaged in something. The trick is making sure it is on your activity. Be WITH THEM, in the mix, communicating and getting/giving feedback. #personalizedPD
A2: Ss are not just actively involved but seem to enjoy what they are doing. When I have asked Ss how engaged are they in their learning throughout the school day, it is a pretty low percentage, like really low. #personalizedpd
I sure walked into many classrooms that were loud and messy - what I looked for - were students engaged in learning or were they having the time of their lives bothering others. :-) #personalizedPD
A3 When all students have to turn in the exact same assessment dealing with the exact same content regardless of their own ideas, skill levels, and interests. #personalizedPD
Not trying something new. Having unrealistic expectations. Not having a variety of activities planned for the entire class period. Showing no excitement for your lesson. #personalizedPD
EVIDENCE (data) that students are learning and growing. Also, invite them in to see that work is happening. “I can show you better than I can tell you.”
A3: They are too numerous to mention. Let me give it a try. How about:
standardized testing, folks stuck on doing it the same way, grading (curse you grades), that stupid pacing guide
#personalizedpd
A3: Barriers include time, resources, curricular and subject restraints. But to be honest, all of those are excuses and if I want to teach in a more #PBL and engaging way, I’m the only thing stopping it from happening. #personalizedPD
I have a teacher who gave her kids a choice board for a summative project. Some kids looked at her like she had 3 heads because it wasn't the standard "type your final draft". She's sticking with it though! #personalizedPD
A3: A boxed curriculum that SOME feel needs to be strictly followed. I have been lucky to have great supportive admin but some are not. #personalizedPD
A3: Barriers include time, resources, curricular and subject restraints. But to be honest, all of those are excuses and if I want to teach in a more #PBL and engaging way, I’m the only thing stopping it from happening. #personalizedPD
A3: I teach HS Ss. It is like herding cats and training chickens all at once. So keeping them on task, out of drama, and engaged. But I move about a bit, acknowledge their conversations, and move them back on task. #personalizedpd
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
What's a lurker you say? A cool person that learns from the back, and jumps in when they are ready!
We would love to hear your thoughts. Join in, or not, it's cool.
A3: Barriers for me were the risk of failing or doing something wrong. I soon realized that students are not cookie cutters, so my teaching couldn’t be. I had to take a chance and ask for help in order to grow. #personalizedPD
A3: Students are sometimes jaded from negative learning experiences and are not willing to let their guard down to try. Once they have a trusting relationship they are more open to trying and having fun/enjoying/engaging #PersonalizedPD
Yes, the first few times they wind up “choosing” whatever their neighbor is using. It gets better though. It helps to give few examples of options to start out. After a little while they get it and truly utilize having options #PersonalizedPD
I'm going to quote @mlarson_nj He recently said "What if instead of the learning being the variable and time being the constant, it was reversed? The learning should be the constant and time should be the variable". #personalizedPD
I really appreciate your point. A student once told me, "I cringe when my teacher goes to a conference or PD because I know we are going to be guinea pigs." It helps when Ss know why we are changing things on them. Then, we have to support them. #personalizedPD
A3: One of our biggest barriers are the traumas that our Ss have faced...so many differing backgrounds...traumatic experiences that honestly cannot be understood by so many who have never lived them. #personalizedPD
@EMercedLearning always says "Maslow before Blooms" and it's 100% true! The kids have to feel safe and loved before the learning can occur! #personalizedPD
Students need thinking time. They need to ask each other questions. Teachers need to allow them to use their voices. Maybe a school full of students with these tshirts might help with wait time? #personalizedPD
Hey @nathan_stevens so much fun hanging out in Twitter chats, and so thankful for you being President of my not-for-real fan club ;) #PersonalizedPD this is an #edugif but not loading
A3: When I change my lens and approach barriers as an opportunity to problem solve, they become healthy challenges that I can work with others to tackle #personalizedpd
A4 I did independent research 2 years ago and read a ton, also wrote a chapter about it, but gathered from blogs, journals, observations and fdbk from Ss, and in chats as well #PersonalizedPD
I think Teacher observations have been the most helpful for me to see and develop authentic student engagement. If you look you can see what is engagement, and what others think is good engagement. #personalizedPD
A4: Being a Mom! :D lol Seriously, I have met some of the most inspiring teachers through Twitter chats! I love hearing and seeing what other teachers do. Then I take that and personalize it for my classroom. #personalizedpd
If you feel like students are authentically engaged most of the time, how open are you to inviting colleagues into your room to observe? How open are you to observing others? #personalizedPD
A4: Ts seem to enjoy when I do observations and catch things that they don’t. It is always presented in a did you notice format and then we brainstorm together to solve any issues. #personalizedpd

Agree, I value those conversations but have also used google forms and other survey tools to get anonymous feedback from them too , or even with @Flipgrid@RecapThat#PersonalizedPD

You know how it’s easy to tell the difference between a fake laugh and a real one? It’s just as easy to tell the difference in real engagement and compliance. Go watch your peers and see what they and their Ss are doing & see if it works for you #personalizedPD

I've been doing more guided inquiry with my students. Today they got a 2 page intro to Reaganomics. Tomorrow they have to draw it. Lots of terms they don't know in that article - YET! #PersonalizedPD

A5: tomorrow’sPD will engage Ts in upping the rigor level and give them an opportunity to collaboratively plan, something they rarely get to do because they work in isolation at their buildings. #personalizedpd
These are the cool kinds of things you get to learn by going to @USMSpark
Thanks @julnilsmith
Milwaukee in June - what could be better? #PersonalizedPD

A5: A few weeks!?! I’ve got like a month and a half left! Create an environment where you emphasize that learning never ends. Also do fun stuff outside as incentives - field trips, field days, class outside. #personalizedPD
Ok ... I am sharing this one again :-) keeping students moving during the last weeks of school would work wonders. Ask yourself, "could we move to ...... " and finish this lesson? Get 'em moving!! How many MS kids wouldn't love voting with their feet? #personalizedPD
Try something new. Try some new digital storytelling tools, bring some social media tools into your class, or just ask the kids how we could improve #PersonalizedPD
I am looking to maintain and increase engagement.I will teach ESY or summer school, as some people call it, but for SPED Ss. I want to keep my students learning, as often as possible. #personalizedPD
Thank you, Sarah @sew1080 for leading a great #personalizedPD chat tonight!
I would LOVE All of YOU- to join us again next week from 8-9PM, CST for #personalizedPD
