Hi, I'm Grant, and I'm going to break Kelly's rule already! I just this week started a new, temporary position, working with Fujitsu to bring the new USIS to Saskatchewan. (So I'm reading lots of manuals! ) #saskedchat
So, #saskedchat as many may know, we are getting a new Student Information System/gradebook/attendance tracker/kitchen sink system next year. I'm on the Fujitsu team getting it (Follett Aspen) set up to work for the 27 SDs in Sask.
Isn’t that the truth! But, doesn’t it help us to realize how important forgiveness, humility and being honest are as we work with young people? #saskedchat
A2 I often like a recording option (SeeSaw, etc) where Ss can talk about a project, etc. that they've done. What they think they did well and what could be improved upon #saskedchat
A2: Start practicing the skill of self-assessment within a task that is highly engaging so students buy into improvement through goal setting #saskedchat
A2: Reflective discussion/coaching questions. "Why do you think you see it that way?" "So what I hear you saying is...." "Why do you think X sees it different from you?" #saskedchat
A1: I find misconceptions about assessment challenging to have convos about w/parents b/c the idea of grades as compensation for work and the idea that low marks are because of zeros is still so prevalent #saskedchat
How can we help Ss to see that self-assessment and peer-assessment are important steps in the learning process and extremely important in a dynamically changing environment like the workforce? #saskedchat#AskingForAFriend

A2: Having clear targets and traits so that the self-assessment makes sense in relation to the overall plan and it’s not a “make work” task. Also, show responsiveness to SA. #saskedchat
#saskedchat I am fairly new to teaching so missed the memo on some details. Why are all the school divisions getting the same system and who is footing the bill? @tgrantt
I think they need to have opportunities to see how these assessments change their learning and demonstrating process. That’s what got me hooked in grad school #saskedchat
Video tape or find a video clip of someone authentically thinking out loud/ working with someone else as they learn a skill (skateboarding, skiing, dancing, etc) and connect it to self/peer assessment. Show them how critical it is (& how natural) #saskedchat
A3: Success breeds success. Give the students opportunities to own it. Give them a chance to succeed. Once they get that first taste- they’re going to have a thirst for more. #saskedchat
#saskedchat I made it my professio al goal this year to work on. I find the more positive opportunities I have and the more advice I get from other teachers, the more confident I feel.
Plus, make sure this processes happens in the midst of learning with recovery time. And then celebrate any and all growth while explicitly connecting it to self assessment. #saskedchat

Good for you. I did the same in my 5th year of teaching and it was a game changer. Afterward I built it into all my planning. Parents connection is powerful. #saskedchat
A3 Keep engaging and authentic learning going with Ss. Connect their interests to the curriculum. If it's more than just the 'ed game' to Ss they'll keep pursuing growth #saskedchat
Well, I'm not the expert on it, but the SK Student Data System needed to be replaced, & the prov. directors decided (I believe) to roll out to the whole province. 1/3 of the prov was using a system that needed replacing ASAP. Not sure of funding. #saskedchat
A3: I have trouble with this, but when I taught online, I found that because Ss didn't know what others were doing, they often went farther than they would have, otherwise #saskedchat
#saskedchat A4: transitioning in what way? A new student came to us this year and we have been connecting monthly through skype and email with his old school to help his transition.
A5: Understanding that kids will be kids, knowing that in order to get through this job - we must have passion, and ditch the classes in rows. #saskedchat
The main skill that's helped me this year has been listening! Our PSVI team has been so helpful as I'm learning the ins and outs for supporting students w/ visual impairments. Help is often there if you seek it out and are open #saskedchat
Book: Beyond the Bake Sale. Twitter follow @WalkAlongsideSK (Not back when I started but now, a great resource). I made 10 positive contacts/month (even mailed positive letters), phoned every homeroom family before Oct. to introduce myself. #saskedchat
It’s important to remember that we work with children - who are learning and making MISTAKES! It’s about helping them when this happens - not about perfection! #saskedchat
Passion 100%, but I've found myself staying away from general statements like "ditch rows." Listen to your learners -- sometimes that's where a year might begin for some, and that's okay. Just keep moving forward. #saskedchat

A5: Compassion, innovation, imagination, organization. You need to be able to focus on specific skills and how they might be developed in your overall learning plan. #saskedchat
JUST starting to play with the recording on @Seesaw (my first time using it this year) and oh my goodness. It's incredible and I'm just scratching the surface. #saskedchat
when i was in the classroom I would do sunshine phone calls to just call home and say something positive about the Ss. Trying to find a way to incorporate that into my LST role. Loving these suggestions thanks! #saskedchat
So cool. I actually used to get my kids to give Sunshine awards when we were feeling down (Feb blues for example). I would give them 3 sticky notes and they had to give three compliments away during the day. Giving to others gives back to us. #saskedchat
For an effective inclusive classroom, teachers could consider possible accommodations and modifications and have enrichment activities prepared ahead of time #saskedchat
A7: Make LEARNING central to the culture of the school. All learning. Music, sports, PD, as well as academic. (And remember learning is messy.) #saskedchat
A7 - Supporting teachers means listening to what they need, asking them how you can help/support them, trusting them as professionals, and empowering them as self-directed learners. #saskedchat

A5. For a successful inclusive classroom, the teacher should provide opportunities for success to build self-esteem among learners. This may include focusing more on individual learners than on syndromes #saskedchat
A7 - I agree with @tgrantt - yeah I know - but learning does need to be central - it needs to be the CORE of what takes place - learning is “cool” - and Ts needed to be encouraged to take a chance and try something new, to innovate and step out! #saskedchat
TA: It’s not about the tech- it’s about the learning. Technology + effective teaching can be powerful but technology alone will not bring change. #saskedchat

Thanks for joining #saskedchat tonight! We hope you've enjoyed our little dip into the past! There was so many great things to choose from but we hope you enjoyed the explorations tonight!
