The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Depends on whether they are happy tears or sad tears... but hugs always seem to help in both cases. I’ve stepped in before when a colleague was overwhelmed and allowed them to use the restroom/take a break. We need to support each other in the village. #bfc530
Depends on the reason for the tears, celebrate with them for happy tears & provide a listening ear & advice when asked for the other. Listening is an under rated skill. #bfc530
Thank you @GruntledChalkie for all your #otd tweets on Australia this year. My superintendent came in to wish me well yesterday and as I was discussing your tweet with my class he was amazed that I must be the only teacher teaching on the last day of school! #bfc530
We never know what our colleagues are going through in their personal lives-a death in the family, divorce, cancer diagnosis or other illness... it’s up to them whether or not to disclose the bigger reason behind the tears, but compassion and kindness can go a long way. #bfc530
👂🏼listen first. Let the teacher get it all out.
If class is still on, I've stepped in before when Ss are starting to gang up on a T. Read the Ss the riot act about how to behave like adults.

When it’s not just a bad day but a seriously challenging year like it was for 2 Ts I encourage them to talk w the P and get help. Our P is awesome and got both aid supports for part of the day. Sometimes a shoulder is not enough. #bfc530
Well I cried with a few Xc seniors on our last day yesterday, partially cuz they're leaving, cuz I'm leaving because we lost our other coach on the last day of school 2 years ago (the only other time I cried with students). Sometimes tears reminds you that you're a family #bfc530
True, I remember before I had kids, a trusted & cherished colleague asking how the adoption process was going & I just broke down in the hallway. Wouldnt have done that if I didnt think of her as more than a co-worker #bfc530
#bfc530 When colleagues "come to tears" assist with the big picture perspective. For Ss needing help there is a network of aid. For Ss fault finding there are Ss who succeed and Ss who take the high road.
Yes! A few years back an overwhelming ELD Math class had me in tears - first time ever. Emailed my P and he split the class to make it more manageable. #bfc530

We also have an amazing sunshine club that springs into action. They organize us to cook meals, bring in needed items, sign cards for our staff family in need. We had a lot of tragedy this yr and need to support each other #bfc530
#BFC530 Listen & redirect T back to self-care & rational detachment. Ss behavior is often not about us & more often due to factors beyond our control. What can we control? Is there one step, no matter how small, we could choose to promote a better outcome for T and Ss? Do that.
