Fantastic responses @DanThompsonIDTS . May I also suggest finding a faculty member that does buy-in, just 1, and have them advocate by showing how easy and effective newer strategies are at demonstrating what you outlined?
#highered#oklaED
A1: The teacher shortage crisis will continue until public education is fully funded a.k.a. restoring years of budget cuts. However, I believe the salary increase has helped retain quality teachers who were considering moving to another state or retiring. #OklaEd
Tyler Bridges, Associate Director for @k20center. I have taken an unintentional hiatus from #oklaed, not bc I want to but bc it has been a BUSY summer!
I'll be back as a "regular" soon!
My name is Linda Wade. I’m the Democratic candidate running in #SD42. My campaign is centered around solving the revenue crisis in this state. #SheDoesMath means I am focused on the numbers. Funding education is a primary concern for me. #OklaEd
My name is Linda Wade. I’m the Democratic candidate running in #SD42. My campaign is centered around solving the revenue crisis in this state. #SheDoesMath means I am focused on the numbers. Funding education is a primary concern for me. #OklaEd
A1- With earmarked revenue being diverted to the General Fund, it seems all teachers are cautiously optimistic about the viability and duration of the salary increases. #OklaEd
The teacher pay raise should reduce the number of emergency and alternate certified teachers but the numbers have been growing so rapidly I am guessing 18-19 we will still surpass 2000 #oklaed
A1 – Great first step in alleviating the #OklaEd teacher shortage crisis. We will be above the regional average for teacher salaries for the first time in a least 20 years, maybe ever.
Q1 A: It remains to be seen, but as historic as 1010xx was, it was nowhere near enough to stem the tide. It doesn’t even bring us to the regional average. That’s why we must elect those who will continue the fight. #OklaEd
A1: We are short at least $800 million in funding education. We can only solve that by repealing destructive tax cuts and incentives. Restoring revenue streams for the entire state can resurrect Oklahoma education. #shedoesmath#OklaEd
A1: It will no doubt help, but is FAR from being the solution to our long-term woes. This has to be the 1st leg in a long race. If new Ss choose #education as a major we won't see that impact for another 3-4 years. #oklaed
A1 Teacher payraise this year was a start. Still committed to further increases. But we don’t have new teachers going into the profession. That will take 1. Funding 2. Pay and 3. RESPECT. We must rebuild our pipeline. #oklaed

A1: We are short at least $800 million in funding education. We can only solve that by repealing destructive tax cuts and incentives. Restoring revenue streams for the entire state can resurrect #Oklahoma education. #shedoesmath#OklaEd
A1: I think it will have the greatest effect on retention rather than attracting new people to the profession. That is also important but we also need to attract new college students to teacher training programs. #OklaEd
#OklaEd please take a minute to tell me if this is a typical history book or a very outrageous one?
I literally checked 4 times to make sure it wasn't parody.
A1 - Unforutnately, I think it is only going to stop the bleeding a little. I don’t think this encourages new Ts to stay in OK. Beyond pay, other states still invest so much more in the classroom. We have work to do to reverse the crisis & it’s going to be a long process. #oklaed
A1 I am really hoping that it stops the brain and talent drain from this state. Teaching in OK shouldn't have to be a sacrifice. Last April was a good first step in the right direction. #oklaed
Molly Jaynes, 3rd grade teacher at Cesar Chavez, OKCPS. Passionate about equity in public ed and increasing time and focus on true social studies education. #oklaed
A1 Teacher payraise this year was a start. Still committed to further increases. But we don’t have new teachers going into the profession. That will take 1. Funding 2. Pay and 3. RESPECT. We must rebuild our pipeline. #oklaed
A1. I think the raises will make a difference, but it will take time to turn the ship. Hopefully we will keep some folks longer that may have retired sooner. New recruits will take time and the $ has to stick meaning ... funding! #OklaEd
A1: It’s a start, but no huge change will take place until enrollment in education majors increase and they choose to stay in state in my opinion. #oklaed
A1 Hoping we are off to a new era of strong support for education and enabling our students to succeed. Reduced turnover should be vital to that, but we must keep our eyes on the horizon. #OklaEd
A1) The pay increase is a good beginning. However, it is only a step in the right direction. It will help some of our teachers but education is a profession and the work necessary to be effective deserves compensation that reflects it but also the accountability. #oklaed
A1: I don't think the teacher pay raises will by themselves change the trend of teachers leaving the profession. Continued public support, legislation that remains focused and true to education and respect for the profession will be the catalyst for keeping Ts #oklaed
A1 Teacher payraise this year was a start. Still committed to further increases. But we don’t have new teachers going into the profession. That will take 1. Funding 2. Pay and 3. RESPECT. We must rebuild our pipeline. #oklaed
A1) The current raise may help retain mid career teachers and those near retirement. Need to keep an eye on data for college grads. Emergency cert #’s so far not good but would like to know how many are renewals. #OklaEd
A1. Stops the bleeding. But shortages are happening across the county. We need to find ways to support more college students to consider the profession. #OklaEd
A1. I can’t speak for anyone else’s experience, but I left public ed for smaller class sizes. While I was thankful for the raise, I just never felt like I could give my kids effective feedback in writing when there were so many of them. #oklaed
A1. The first half of the needed pay raise is a huge first step. I’m hoping it will boost teacher retention and possibly even translate to a few more Education majors/future teachers. #oklaed
A1: I think we need to realize that the impact of this raise is 4 years out. Maybe some great Ts won’t leave now, but for full impact we need people going into teaching. We need college students studying education. This raise may help that. #oklaed
The raise is a giant step in the right direction. However, we know it will not entice teachers to return or relocate to Oklahoma to teach. Therefore, we must continue to look for ways to attract the best to the profession. #OklaEd
A1 The $$ certainly helps. I'm on the low end as a newer teacher.... but am grateful for any additional support given. Whether it is monetary or simply an improvement in the attitude and importance placed on education. #oklaed
A2- we need a change in the culture and attitude at the Capitol. There is too much ideological rigidity around taxes and funding, and not the proper prioritization of education and other core services. The burden of cost has to be shared by all, according to their ability. #OklaEd
A1: The pay raise will help, but it’s much more about increasing funding to our schools. And we must do a better job of valuing our T’s in this state or they will leave. #OklaEd
A1a I don’t think it will have much effect on recruiting future teachers. Ss expect to make more if they’re going to spend 4 years in college just being honest)...and if it does happen to make a difference it will be 4-5 years before the graduate. #oklaed
A1 It is a great 1st step. It can't solve all our problems because for too long college students either elected to pursue a different vocation or to take it to another state. It will take several years to turn it around. #oklaed
A1
Showing teachers that they are valued is important. We have to be able to recruit and keep teachers in OK. The pay raise was a great step toward that goal. #oklaed
I know for a fact that @oedchs utilizes these strategies to help faculty improve student outcomes, and they are super successful. If we aren't trying to improve student outcomes, then why are we in education? My students' success is My success.
#highered#oklaED
A1: Negligible impact short term. Looks like we have more emergency certifications this year than before. Professional educators have seen behind the curtain and don’t trust the Legislature. #oklaed#failedleadership
A1: We have already seen some of the positive aspects of the pay increases in our district. We have added upper level science courses, and teachers who were considering seeking employment elsewhere (TX) are staying here. #oklaed
A1: We have to start somewhere. I know emergency certification is drawing some great people into the profession, but having been on the parent side of this issue, it's been a less than ideal situation. #oklaed
A2 - We must continue to invest in #OklaEd so schools can hire additional teachers to lower class size and provide resources necessary to provide the high quality education our children deserve.
Q2 A: Recognizing that we’re in a massive crisis is step one. So far, I’ve had 8 teachers in HD 46 leave the prof and that’s since 1010xx passed. Step 2: Fight for full funding, accounting for more students/inflation. Step 3: End charter expansion/vouch. #OklaEd
A1) It’s an important first step, but we won’t reverse the teacher shortage until teachers have RESPECT, well-equipped classrooms and greater autonomy to teach. #oklaed
A1 Pay raises are a start. Seat at the table is next. Too many policies created without professional input. Yes, teachers are highly trained professionals. #oklaed
I am hearing teachers feel they are not respected. Hey think a good step would be to understand that better and what can help change that issue. #oklaed
A1a I don’t think it will have much effect on recruiting future teachers. Ss expect to make more if they’re going to spend 4 years in college just being honest)...and if it does happen to make a difference it will be 4-5 years before the graduate. #oklaed
That is a great point about emergency certs. Having to hire so many emergency certs is far from optimal...but these folks are putting their lives on hold and taking on a tough job with no training. This is worthy of respect. We need to help them succeed. #oklaed
A1: We have to start somewhere. I know emergency certification is drawing some great people into the profession, but having been on the parent side of this issue, it's been a less than ideal situation. #oklaed
A1. I can’t speak for anyone else’s experience, but I left public ed for smaller class sizes. While I was thankful for the raise, I just never felt like I could give my kids effective feedback in writing when there were so many of them. #oklaed
A1 part 2: However this can’t be just a bandaid, we have other major issues and concerns. We need to recruit new teachers to our profession, and make it attractive and impactful to work in our state. #OklaEd
A1: I don't think it'll help as much as people would like to think. It still doesn't bring it to an amount where people would consider it incentive, though. It'll keep some here, but not pull others in. #oklaed
A2: Continue to support #oklaed through more investment into the classroom, show less blatant disrespect of the profession & craft policies to support schools.
Plus, we MUST bring the best teachers and leaders into our schools. W/O the best, no amount of $$ will matter.
A2: Revenues for education. Another $6k for teachers, restoring our school infrastructure, getting current on text books and supporting technology. GPT to 10%+; repeal of destructive tax cuts, etc. #OklaEd
A2. Our next steps must involve increasing per student funding. Teachers want the rest of their pay raise AND adequate funding for classrooms so they have what they need to meet student needs. We are about $1900 below regional average per student per year. #oklaed
A2: Revenues for education. Another $6k for teachers, restoring our school infrastructure, getting current on text books and supporting technology. GPT to 10%+; repeal of destructive tax cuts, etc. #OklaEd
A2) Move the focus back to educating our students in the skills they will need to be well-rounded citizens and take the emphasis off of high-stake tests that do not always give an accurate measure of growth. #oklaed
A2) We need to be shown the love by our communities! Respect and pos talk go a long way with us. Working every day to make a difference in lives is exhausting. We do it more for the impact than the pay. When we are missing both its disheartening. Created the current issue. #oklaed
A2. Continue to value Ts, continue to find $ for operational costs that also support Ts, recruit and keep the message positive. Make sure this is only the FIRST Step! Consistency in support for Educ. will help as well. #OklaEd
A2 A legislated plan for continued revenue growth and maintaining a minimum of a CofL raise each year or more until we are at or above the regional average #oklaed
A2: Attracting college students to pursue teaching as a career. We need well trained young educators who are willing to stick it out for the long haul. #oklaed
A3- Many new ideas to bring to the Capitol, like eliminating student loans for our teachers who spend five years getting certified. Proposals deserve a hearing and are a step in culture change. They need to be developed by those impacted and respected by lawmakers. #OklaEd
A1: Teachers in Norman are still leaving. And emergency certifications are still high. Our wages and regulations are not competitive with surrounding states. #oklaed
A2. #oklaleg must recognize that trust needs to be restored. Show educators with actions next session that the tide has changed, 1010 was a new beginning not an ending and #oklaed is a priority. Both in funding and treating educators like the professionals they are.
A2 -
1: Vision. Just like I said to @jonechols - leaders have vision; they think forward. I am tired of everything being reactionary in our state politics. #oklaed
2: Investment in our state. That means the core services my Ss need outside of school as well.
A2
Almost every teacher I visited with during the walkout was concerned with growing classroom sizes. Fewer students in each classroom would allow our teachers to spend more instructional time with each student and produce better outcomes. Teachers want to teach. #oklaed
I think it is an issue we are seeing with the profession, not just here in #oklaed. However, in my opinion, we are guilty of being one of the more unfriendly edu-environments in the US over the past decade-plus.
A2: state testing reform, smaller class sizes, mentorship program reinstated, we have to help our first year teachers. We should be doing all we can to mentor them and keep them. They’re the future of #oklaed
A2) Adequately funding education. Too many Ts (including me) teaching things they aren’t qualified for. It would also be nice too have enough quality instruments for my Ss without having to borrow or make do. #oklaed
A2. All the education in the world to enlighten those who think ed gets too much funding and is being wasted. We have to do all we can to change the narrative and show the value of education. This includes the value of programs some voters mistake as wasteful. #oklaed
A2. #oklaleg must recognize that trust needs to be restored. Show educators with actions next session that the tide has changed, 1010 was a new beginning not an ending and #oklaed is a priority. Both in funding and treating educators like the professionals they are.
A2) Our state has to value teachers not only monetarily but professionally as well. It would also be great if we could start playing a little offense instead of constant defense during legislative session. #oklaed
A2: And that is in any state. The teacher crisis will fix itself when teachers are paid what they deserve and ALL schools receive the investments that are required.
#oklaed
A2: Action instead of lip-service, dedicated revenue streams with increased classroom funding. We’ve had increased student enrollment without the funds to educate them. #oklaed
A2. All the education in the world to enlighten those who think ed gets too much funding and is being wasted. We have to do all we can to change the narrative and show the value of education. This includes the value of programs some voters mistake as wasteful. #oklaed
A2 Keep the conversation alive and work to repair the respect shown towards the education profession as a whole. It's hard for citizens to approve additional money or funding to a profession that is not honored or valued. #oklaed
A2 Making these funding levels sustainable and growing is a key part to ensuring innovations are adopted, materials are provided for, and health and well-being of students and teachers are provided. Problematically, main funding sources will lose their effect with time. #OklaEd
A2: We need to be more active in who we put in the peoples house. We need to encourage them to continue funding education. Slow and steady until we are at the level our students deserve. #oklaed
A2) We need to keep elevating the respect for our profession and recruit, recruit, recruit. Those of us at the end of our careers need to talk the talk as well as walk the walk for education. Finish strong with pride! #oklaed
A2: Increase education funding in order to reduce classroom sizes and provide essentials olin the classroom that teachers and students aren't currently receiving. #oklaed
Agree. And this is a national issue. 300k less teachers are entering the profession nationally than a decade ago. Think about that for a moment. How many classrooms would 300k teachers equate to? #OklaEd
A2 More recognition that being a teacher is a very important job. We have our hands on the future of America. A little 'thank you for your service" has worked for the military. #oklaed
Teacher ed programs are required by our national accreditor to have recruitment plan to increase number of grads. This is fairly new, but hopefully it will help over next several years as we implement them across state. #oklaed
#oklaed A2 we need to provide and require more “trauma informed” training for Oklahoma teachers. We need to invest in equipping & empowering our educator workforce, especially with high-quality professional development that helps Ts better support & meet the needs of Ss
@shawnhime A2- it’s not just about teachers pay. We need to keep our athletics and extra curricular (art etc) pay competitive with other states too... #oklaed
A2: Increase education funding in order to reduce classroom sizes and provide essentials olin the classroom that teachers and students aren't currently receiving. #oklaed#Bell4Norman
Q2: #OklaEd should be at least at the “average” in per pupil spending. The raise will not mean much to Ts if the extra money is still going to the classroom for instruction needs.
A2: Equitably funding education along with adequacy. All students need an adequate investment. Some students needs more to make their experiences equitable.
#oklaed
A3 - #OklaEd need to work with Higher Ed and business leaders to create incentives to recruit our students to attend Oklahoma Colleges and stay in Oklahoma to teach.
A2: I hosted a teacher “listening session” this week, and current educators discussed this. WE NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THIS POSITION. Student loan forgiveness I suppose is possible. Other incentives similar to physicians in rural Oklahoma communities. #oklaed#failedleadership
A3: P1: Incentives need to be extreme. Errything should be on the table. Restore respect in our teachers by giving autonomy back. End reliance on tests for everything. Go with student-centered approach over outcome-based. Teachers will flock back! #OklaEd
Agree. And this is a national issue. 300k less teachers are entering the profession nationally than a decade ago. Think about that for a moment. How many classrooms would 300k teachers equate to? #OklaEd
A2: Increase education funding in order to reduce classroom sizes and provide essentials in the classroom that teachers and students aren't currently receiving. #oklaed
A2 Work to find reliable and realistic ways to continue to fund education. Build trust among #OKleg and #oklaed, respect and value education and educators. Education has to be a priority.
A2: Most important next steps. Eliminate unfunded mandates such as high stakes driven RSA, and A-F report card. Allocate at least $10K per student. #oklaed
@MooreNormanTech has a new Teacher Prep course for high school students in Moore, Norman, and south OKC. Qualifies as HS elective credit.

@jonechols Thanks for joining us Rep. Echols🍎 and for your constant availability even when you are on a family vacation!! Sorry about that again by the way! 😂 #oklaed
Agree. And this is a national issue. 300k less teachers are entering the profession nationally than a decade ago. Think about that for a moment. How many classrooms would 300k teachers equate to? #OklaEd
A3. Give teachers autonomy!!! I hear a lot from p-12 colleagues that the ability to create and implement their own curriculum (or develop locally with a team) is a huge factor in deciding to stay or leave. #oklaed
A3 P2: Focus on local control. Work with local supers/cities/private groups to figure out local incentives. Explore state tax incentives for our TEACHERS instead of big oil etc, explore housing incentives for teachers of 3+ yr, extend legislator insur to teachers of 3 yr #Oklaed
#OklaEd I believe the teacher shortage will continue until equitable funding is provided. Teachers can still go to Texas and get a considerable raise. But classroom funding; supplies, technology, curriculum, and a feeling of support are still the main issues.
A2: More money making its way into classrooms for supplies, smaller class sizes, increased support by administration, but most importantly, we teachers need to publicize all the good there is about being a teacher in Oklahoma. #OklaEd
A2 We must develop a shared vision and strategy for how we support education that can transcend petty partisanship. #OkLeg must be committed to demonstrating respect as well. #OklaEd
A2 return to mandates of 1017. Smaller class sizes so that teachers can teach and not just referee. Return to full "specials" so students have well rounded curriculum. #removetesting#oklaed
A3 Community support and developing a familial atmosphere within the school attracts people from outside the district especially when potential applicants have seemingly equal options #oklaed
A2: A larger investment into our classrooms and students MUST be made. Also I would like for Oklahoma to be thought of as innovative in regard to education. No quick fixes but to be ahead of the curve. #oklaed
#oklaed needs to examine the certification process. Who we are letting in teacher education programs. Throw a bigger net but continue to support and train young teachers
A3) Eliminate the early turnover. Have supports in place for 2nd-3rd year teachers. And make sure they know at the end of year one that we’re still here for them. Then actually be there for them. #OklaEd
A2: Yes, and help schools adjust the staffing formula so that teachers and specialist like Deans or interns can be added to a schools man power based on NEED. #Equity#oklaed
A2 - We must continue to invest in #OklaEd so schools can hire additional teachers to lower class size and provide resources necessary to provide the high quality education our children deserve.
A3: Nothing...?
the legislature controls funding. As stated earlier, if the legislature refuses to make the necessary investments in public education, then vote them out.
#oklaed
A3) #oklaed can continue to reach out to our local universities to welcome students wanting to enter the profession. We can also continue to promote the chats and the edCamps because they are unique and informative. #oklaed
A2: Put together a long term plan for recruiting/retaining. But this shortage is not unique to OK. There are 300k less teachers entering the profession than a decade ago. We need to see what other states are doing well to recruit/retain. #oklaed
A3: trust and respect go a long ways in education. Trust me to be innovative in my classroom & try new things. Trust me to think out of the box. Trust that I have my students’ best interest at heart. #oklaed
A2: I think a long term funding approach would be the best thing for them to focus on. I know Kansas and Arizona have recently had state Supreme Court rulings declaring their lack of ed funding unconstitutional. I wonder if that would get traction. #oklaed
A3: Would love to see more schools encourage teaching as a profession. @okhighered has the Teach Oklahoma program to help encourage interest among high school juniors and seniors & some #oklaed districts have implemented. https://t.co/Ip2p7bg156
A3. As leaders we have to ensure we are working to support Ts in every possible way. Classroom supplies, creating the culture of support Ts need, etc. Value them daily by both actions and words. Rally communities to do the same. Create advocacy plans & follow thru #OklaEd
A3) Work to the best of our abilities in creating the culture of our schools to be one were people want to be, but frankly we are coming to the end of that “non-legislative action list.” #oklaed
A3 I think that we as Ts and stakeholders can create a culture that others want to be a part of. Being active and positive about #oklaed on social media is a component of this. Doing something great? Amplify.
A3
Local advocacy and support. There are districts in OK that are better than others at recruiting and retaining teachers. I’ve found those districts have one thing in common: strong support from the community. #oklaed
A3. Okay so this question was not for the legislators. But some non legislative actions Legislators should do.
1. Go to your local schools. Often!
2. Talk to your local school boards.
3. And most of all sometimes stop talking and LISTEN! Educators know what they need. #oklaed
We need to establish sustainable funding. That wasn’t addressed in the past three sessions and it can’t be put on the backs of those who can least afford it. #OklaEd
A3: We are experiencing a nation-wide shortage to the teaching profession. There are many things #OklaEd can do to lead the way. Invest in quality continuing prof. dev. for all. Provide autonomy & resources for Ts & give more attn to the mental health & well-being of all Ts.
#oklaed A2. Teacher need a sense of respect. Value the profession. Support. In the 60’s and somewhat in the 70’s, teachers were held in the highest regard in their communities.
Support from not only site admin and colleagues, but SUPPORT from central office administrators. As well as parent and community support! Also continued funding and professionalism of the career! #oklaed
You want to see hope in full force? Follow the #oklaED on Sunday evenings. These are our educators, faculty, admins discussing ways to better lives and our future.
A1) honestly concerned it won't be enough... the disenfranchisement towards being an educator is quite great... let's be honest the pay raise isn't enough, the classroom sizes are still outstanding, and the respect still lacking ... but I AM hopeful #oklaed
A3) We need to tell our positive stories over and over and over. We need to encourage college Ss into the profession. We need to support our new and veteran Ts to meet the demands of a changing system. We need to stay professional. We need to keep loving our Ss. #oklaed
A2) Invest in our students and classrooms. #OKLeg must stop chasing problems year after year. Get ahead of immediate and lingering challenges w/the tools, training and people our kids need to THRIVE. #oklaed
A3: Help create an atmosphere that encourages teachers to stay. Del City is a family, we support and encourage each other it's my goal in my department to keep my people happy and willing to stay. #oklaed
Hello, starting a little late! I’m Jennifer, Early Childhood educator, former principal and working for @oksde to serve our youngest learners! #OKEarlyEd#OklaEd
A3: In two listening sessions this week, a repeated comment from professional educators was a reduction in testing, particularly for sped. #oklaed#failedleadership#letteachersteach
A3: Encourage community leaders to show teachers that they are valued and respected. Show others how to be advocates for our teachers so they can focus on their students. #oklaed
A3: offer collegiate tuition waivers or assistance for public school teachers’ children. I have 2 in college and that would def be an incentive. #OklaEd
A4 – We need a plan similar to the recently completed Roads and Bridges plan. The #OkLeg should appropriate an annual increase for #OklaEd until we are also competitive with our regional peers in per pupil funding.
A3 Build each other up. Work together, smarter not harder. It's not a competition for scores, but children we're attempting to raise. Make copies, plan lessons, discuss students, send each other home before 10 p.m. #OKLAED
A3 More positive talk. Appeal to a person's emotions. You can really make a difference to the community, state, and nation as a teacher because you touch the future. If you are well-paid you can better afford those emotions. #oklaed
Continue the conversation with teachers, making them feel like they have valued input! If teachers can see that they can make an impact, they may want to join in or stick around. #oklaed
A3: Encourage community leaders to show teachers that they are valued and respected. Show others how to be advocates for our teachers so they can focus on their students. #oklaed
Student Loan forgiveness could be significant. Also - incentivize teachers to teach in certain subject areas that are traditionally more difficult to recruit (STEM, SpEd, etc) #OklaEd
Continue the conversation with teachers, making them feel like they have valued input! If teachers can see that they can make an impact, they may want to join in or stick around. #oklaed
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has introduced legislation to expand 529s to include homeschooled students. Hats off to Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) for signing on as a co-sponsor. #oklaedhttps://t.co/dy4CUhSQpj
A4 P1: Long-term legislative goal is: Fully fund public schools taking into acct inflation/# of kids, reduce/enforce class size max to 25 (need more teachers!), provide for our students by investing in mental health/core services, stop diverting $ to charter esp Epic.#Oklaed
A:3 I like to see the career of education promoted within high schools, grow our own teachers that understand our culture and reflect our student population. #oklaed
A3) Support and engagement from the community. Each district can make their teachers feel like they are valued with a grassroots effort for community involvement. @mcvay51 and I are about to get started on this in El Reno! #oklaed
A2) I think we should start taking investing in education seriously... reasonable classroom sizes, classroom funds, stipends for attending PD...just some thoughts #oklaed
A4. Stop with the cuts. Seriously. It was soooo historic to pass this huge measure to get the raises, but it wouldn’t have been necessary if it weren’t for the YEARS of cuts before that had to be replaced. #oklaed
A4 see my earlier comment about 1017. Fund schools with enough teachers for small classes and curriculum offerings beyond the basics. If you teach it, they will come. #OKLAED
A4: Long term, there needs to be a maintained equitably distributed public investment in public education. I'll say it... a socialists model to funding and supporting public education.
#oklaed
A3 More high quality community members running for school board, communities providing local incentives & teacher-friendly environments, tuition deferrment programs, increased parental involvement in their child's education, more high quality leaders in schools. #oklaed
A4 – We need a plan similar to the recently completed Roads and Bridges plan. The #OkLeg should appropriate an annual increase for #OklaEd until we are also competitive with our regional peers in per pupil funding.
A4) The long-term goal should be to find a way to equally fund education with a revenue source that is stable and dependable with the protection of those funds to be restricted to only education. Then the back room games can stop. #oklaed
A4 P2: Reimplement/priority NBCT, SLP, require more safeguards/account to charters, invest in tech in our schools, expand public schools online so outside for-profits aren’t needed. End the reliance on tests (push to end fed reliance on tests too), invest in comm schools. #OklaEd
A4: #OKLAED should demand realistic revenues and budgets. Oklahoma should have a $9.3 billion budget, not $7.6. Demand an end to special interest tax giveaways. Demand a more diverse population be embraced.
A4: #OKLAED should demand realistic revenues and budgets. Oklahoma should have a $9.3 billion budget, not $7.6. Demand an end to special interest tax giveaways. Demand a more diverse population be embraced.
A3)
•Parent involvement / volunteer efforts.
•Continued community outreach.
•More time for teachers to plan and collaborate with colleagues.
•Continued support, training, and development. #OklaEd
A3. Also, teacher ed programs need to partner with districts to help develop emergency and alt cert teachers. We want to train them so they develop their craft, convert to standard certs, and STAY in #oklaed
A4 It may surprise some, but the legislature has made significant moves toward a long term strategy over the past couple of years. Legislators are also tired of the ups and downs. #OklaEd
A4) Fully fund education so that class sizes are reduced and acct for inflation. Be proactive, not reactive. Fund core services in the state. Don't be afraid to do what needs to be done. #oklaed
A4- education should be the same in pay as legislators. If they are #20 in pay in the nation we should be too. If they are #45 it would make sense that we are #45 in the nation. #oklaed#equality
A4) We must learn to start being proactive instead of reactive. We can’t wait until there is a walkout to worry about effective advocacy. This is something that has to happen before the crisis, not during. #oklaed
A4: Sustainable, dedicated funding source for #OklaEd. More frequent raises to the state pay scale. More frequent visits #okleg to remind them of oklaed needs.
A4 - Maybe we could work towards being number 1 in a positive stat (education) instead of being number 1 in everything negative. Not regional average, not back to what it was 10 years ago, but actually be the best! #oklaed
A.4 To be competitive in all areas of education; pay, resources, per pupil spending, etc., to show that Oklahoma does value it's students, teachers and education #oklaed
A4: I believe our budget is a moral document. #okleg has to find sustainable revenue that allows us to fund education at a level that reflects its importance to our state. #oklaed
A4: long term measures to ensure consistency and a level playing field for ALL public schools. ALWAYS keep PUBLIC EDUCATION a number 1 priority and we won’t have these issues. #OklaEd
Yes - definitely join us and become involved at the state level —but also within local districts, too. In fact, this likely has the most direct impact for school policy. For state level projects/involvement, contact us via @tiffanyneill#oklaed
For me personally I would like to see more dollars to the classroom and no out of pocket dollars for supplies coming from teachers. The only time a teachers would pay out of pocket is if they have a special project that was not budgeted for earlier on the year. #oklaed
A4: I believe our budget is a moral document. #okleg has to find sustainable revenue that allows us to fund education at a level that reflects its importance to our state. #oklaed
IMO, There should also be measurable results to go with it. R&B can show projects completed, on time, under budget, etc. How can that be accomplished with ed? #OklaEd
A4 Restore ALL prior cuts in TODAY'S money and add to it ever year. Quit looking as state agencies as a piggy bank. Broaden the revenue sources so we are not in this position again. #oklaed
A4 Getting #OklaEd to be supported with more stable revenue sources will enable improvements over time. We of course have a perpetual challenge to be regionally competitive, but other reforms could even put us on path to be nationally competitive.
A4- After historic lows must come historic highs with our GPT, like every other state on this finite resource. Eliminate the Capital Gains Tax Break and add a state income tax bracket for top earners. Show commitment to OK’s future! #OklaEd
A4: The most important thing I want to see restored in education is beyond the basics are the arts and the critical thinking skills desperately needed in a technological age. #OklaEd
A4) our long term goal should also include building relationships with legislators not taking the bully/demanding approach. It’s the only way you get a seat at the table to be heard. #oklaed
A5: Most important is incentivizing our teachers so they don’t leave for sharks in the water like Epic or other states. Next is ensuring our class sizes stay at or below 25. 35-50 is NOT OK! #OklaEd
A3: Relationships are at the core of teaching, and should be for recruitment as well. We have to build those relationships within the community that fosters RESPECT for the profession and encouragement for future teachers. #OklaEd
A4: The most important thing I want to see restored in education is beyond the basics are the arts and the critical thinking skills desperately needed in a technological age. #OklaEd
A4: Continue to stave off policies that are counterproductive to the mission of public education.
Provide a long-term funding measure for #oklaed (a la roads & bridges) that allows schools to confidently invest in the classroom instead of wondering what the next year will bring.
A4: We desperately need to give our support personnel, staff, and retirees a meaningful raise. We need fully funded resources inside the classrooms, including access to technology and textbooks! #OklaEd
There are plenty of measurables. However, as we saw with NCLB and RTT, relying on measurables is not equitable and is likely harmful, especially to the most vulnerable.
#oklaed
A5: The most important thing I want to see restored in education is beyond the basics are the arts and the critical thinking skills desperately needed in a technological age. #OklaEd
A4 - Maybe we could work towards being number 1 in a positive stat (education) instead of being number 1 in everything negative. Not regional average, not back to what it was 10 years ago, but actually be the best! #oklaed
I think we need to be careful what kind of culture this can create in a school also. Why is a science T more important than an English/History/Art/etc T? What does it say when that T gets more of an incentive to be there?

A4: The most important thing I want to see restored in education is beyond the basics are the arts and the critical thinking skills desperately needed in a technological age. #OklaEd
A5- We need to reduce class sizes and provide supplies to students and teachers. Quality leadership too. At the state level, district level, and in schools. #OklaEd
A4 SJR35 has significant potential to end reliance on volatile revenue, and copycats states that led on edu funding increases in the past decade. #OklaEd
A5: The most important thing I want to see restored in education is beyond the basics are the arts and the critical thinking skills desperately needed in a technological age. #OklaEd
After multiple meetings with teachers in my district what I hear is class sizes. Which requires the ability to hire more highly qualified teachers. Which goes back to the big three pay, funding and respect. #oklaed
A5 Removal of Retention laws. Research clearly shows that it is not beneficial and any gains seen are short term at best. Remediation is a resounding yes, but retention is a big NO. #oklaed
A4: Equity over Equality. Schools are diverse in their needs, culture, and challenges. We can't treat them equally and expect equitable results. Also keeping the funding focus on public schools, not voucher systems. #oklaed
A5) School culture and student discipline needs to be addressed. Teachers need to be supported and students deserve a safe and orderly place to go and learn. Those students causing disruptions need to be addressed with care and a plan not just suspension and exclusion #oklaed
A4: to keep PUBLIC EDUCATION relevant by encouraging it to be the forefront of all conversations. PUBLIC EDUCATION is a priceless commodity because of the clientele! #Children#Students#future#Oklaed
A5 I am not a fan of the high-stakes testing that we subject our third-graders to. There are far better ways to ensure that every child reads than this arbitrary and punitive measure. #oklaed
A:5 After reading a couple of the test allowed to a few students… Testing is a huge issue for me. Call me a bad teacher, but that was not how I read the standards. I even let @OK_PSRC help me unpack them. #thattestwaswhack#oklaed
There are always a number of things to tackle. We need to keep our advocacy efforts going in a positive, strategic & purposeful way. Build relationships w legislators. RSA needs to be SIGNED to align. Continue to work together - we found an energy we need to keep. #OklaEd
#OklaEd Hello everyone, Bill Day running for State Senate District 36 here. In the runoff #aug28. Will answer ?s as quickly as I can. More at https://t.co/9u1tZxs1Li
It is time to make the funds Oklahoma educators spend in the classroom wholly deductible. These are workers who pay out of their pocket to give our kids a quality education. My brother did it for years without one little thank you from the State of Oklahoma. #oklaed
And in some cases (Piedmont, Deer Creek), infrastructure is an issue. Bond capacity is capped but students continue to flow into district. Can’t keep up the pace. #oklaed
A5: If we aren't looking at funding, maybe we can close some of the loop holes in the law that prevent loan forgiveness, that allows rules about class sizes to be broken, and other issues that effect student performance #oklaed
A:5 We need to avoid the usual suspects that cry for reform of our budgets, while advocating for more money to go towards unaccountable voucher and for- profit schools. #oklaed
A4) We must learn to start being proactive instead of reactive. We can’t wait until there is a walkout to worry about effective advocacy. This is something that has to happen before the crisis, not during. #oklaed
A5) Measures to reduce class sizes. In listening sessions this week, that is the No. 1 issue. But, it too is related to funding, of course. #oklaed#failedleadership
A3: We must build up our profession to those who would thrive in the classroom. Too often, we as educators, discourage others from joining our profession. #oklaed
A4) We need to see lower classroom sizes and more essentials (@lauren_pena16) opportunities (art, music, PE, etc). Also, the pay raise was not enough to encourage new Ts to go into ed... or to stay in the state. #oklaed
A4 Wins in other sectors like healthcare free up resources to be used for #OklaEd If expenses in one category grow faster than revenue does, then it translates to less for the things we want to fund.
Side note: promote and encourage conversations about Title IX rights and Title IX admins and advocates. If you don’t know what Title IX is, ask me! #oklaed
A6- hard work and listening to the needs of my district. I am at the doors and with our community at every opportunity. That is the core fundamental of representing people. We make up the government, not the other way around! #OklaEd
A5: Are we really providing Ss with the opportunities to succeed? Are we giving our Ss enough chances for vocational training? Is college prep REALLY college prep? Have we ALL lost the arts? Only a few ?? I ask for my own kids and the kids of #oklaed
After multiple meetings with teachers in my district what I hear is class sizes. Which requires the ability to hire more highly qualified teachers. Which goes back to the big three pay, funding and respect. #oklaed
Yes, support teachers by making sure we have quality support personnel. Secretaries, custodians, cooks, and assistants are all a necessary but often unsung part of our village. #oklaed
A4: We desperately need to give our support personnel, staff, and retirees a meaningful raise. We need fully funded resources inside the classrooms, including access to technology and textbooks! #OklaEd
As the mother of a 5th grader and sophomore, and the wife of one awesome high school math teacher, I am overwhelmed that I can't actually read everyone's post in this twitter chat. Very excited that changes are being made. Thank you, leges and Ts for all you are doing. #oklaed
A6: Knocking doors, attending events, website and phone banking. All focused on delivering message that Oklahoma's dysfunction is manufactured and that WE CAN END IT! #OklaEd
A6: Knocking doors, attending events, website and phone banking. All focused on delivering message that Oklahoma's dysfunction is manufactured and that WE CAN END IT! #OklaEd
A6: How about staff drawings for submitted “I voted” stickers on a note card with their name? Work with PTA to reach out to parents about funding challenges and importance of civic engagement on public education. #oklaed
A6: Since I’m running again (3rd year/row), I’m just staying LOUD everywhere; on social media, inviting all to join me in my campaign (to great effect), staying VERY engaged with my local parents/teachers by knockin doors and meet n greets. ✊🏼#OklaEd
I mean absolutely no disrespect here, but educating children isn't exactly like pouring concrete for a bridge. I have NO issue with being held accountable, never have been, but the ways normally proposed run very counterintuitive of #oklaed and things under its control.
A3) Encourage today’s students to become educators. I have heard too many teachers discourage students who feel that they have a passion for education not to go into #OklaEd. That mindset must be changed!
1. #Oklaed must collectively fight attempts to weaken the voice of all teachers disguised in legislation that specifically targets teacher unions.
2. #Oklaed must fight ESA/Voucher expansion that takes funding from public schools & gives to private schools w/o accountability.
A5 Removal of Retention laws. Research clearly shows that it is not beneficial and any gains seen are short term at best. Remediation is a resounding yes, but retention is a big NO. #oklaed
A5: The reality is that decades of immigration policy failure we have many children in our system living in a state of fear. We need to institute the Dream Act so we can finally provide a healthy classroom for all kids. #OklaEd
Absolutely. But it can’t be a blanket cap on class sizes without the money to hire more teachers in order to lower those numbers. Thanks for being here and voicing your support for #oklaed!
A6 I'm sharing all information I can with anyone who'll listen. I have researched and interviewed candidates. Whenever I'm in a 1-1 or small group convo, I'm asking their district and sharing the information I know. #OKLAED
A5) A focus on the purpose of education... I think that it is important that our students love learning and are involved citizens. Our current focus on testing gets in the way of what's important #oklaed
A5: The reality is that decades of immigration policy failure we have many children in our system living in a state of fear. We need to institute the Dream Act so we can finally provide a healthy classroom for all kids. #OklaEd
A6: I try not to be obnoxious about it, although many think I am. I call it passionate. I have advocated hard for @joy4ok and @DrewForOklahoma. I am not straight party. I am for people. Good people. I pass out signs and post on SM how amazing they are. #oklaed
I didn't say measureables are bad. I meant to say that solely relying on measureables is bad. The new ESSA plan suggests relying on multiple indicators, some of which are non-cognitive indicators like student self-efficacy.
#oklaed
A6 Having a million conversations. Making people aware on social media and in person. Volunteering. Being an active participant and bring others along to participate with you. #oklaed
A7- P1- One thing is to listen to the regular ideas generated outside the building, as mentioned earlier. We need to see regular brainstorming where legislators, educators, and school administrators can exchange knowledge and ideas to get to know and understand each other #oklaed
A6. I talk to everyone about the run-off and the November elections. Seriously, my new hair stylist and I had a 30 min convo about it last week! Neighbors, parents of the kids on our kids’ sports team... everyone! #oklaed
A6: We must remain vigilant and vocal. Social Media discussions, fact checking, sharing information and encouraging voting every chance we get, when we all participate, we all win #oklaed
A6: #Gladiator Staying positive with what has happened and encouraging this momentum by staying informed by researching all candidates, informing others via social media dialogues, and encouraging others to represent their voices at the polls. #Oklaed
That is exactly why we have these conversations! We need to work together to develop a plan as well as accountability measures. Educators must be in the conversation. #oklaed

A4) Our PK-12th #OklaEd budget proposal is presented to the state Board of Ed in Oct.—> then to #OKLeg in Jan/Feb annually. Join our working group to help identify, quantify and prioritize what’s required, needed and critical for kids. Then, call on your legislator to pass it.
I would love to see enough #oklaed funding to separate SpEd teacher duties, so that focus could be on either teaching or managing IEP caseload, not splitting attention between the two.
A6: #Gladiator Staying positive with what has happened and encouraging this momentum by staying informed by researching all candidates, informing others via social media dialogues, and encouraging others to represent their voices at the polls. #Oklaed
A6: How about staff drawings for submitted “I voted” stickers on a note card with their name? Work with PTA to reach out to parents about funding challenges and importance of civic engagement on public education. #oklaed
A6 Don’t stop sharing your story and connecting with community...we can’t loose momentum for positive change! Know the candidates and who is a friend to education and can work across party lines. #OklaEd
A6) I'm all about supporting candidates that care about education as well as issues that impact our Ss & families. I'm hoping that our current excitement doesn't burn out. I learned a lot when I interviewed @ClaudiaSwisher-we have to keep holding our #okleg accountable #oklaed
A7-P2- Keep the momentum of teachers, parents, and advocates informed through regular communications by social media, newsletters, and forums. It should not be a closed system on a subject as important as public education for Oklahomans. It hasn’t been productive. #OklaEd
This is also a conversation that isn't suited for 280 characters. I'm more than happy to have a conversation with you regarding the positives and negatives of measureables in education.
#oklaed
A7: Get to know their LAs 😀 Reach out via email, phone, etc. and set up face to face meeting. Reach out to me! I intend to help every one of the new true pub ed warriors, regardless of party. I’m still a teacher in that way ✊🏼 #OklaEd
A5) Eliminate high stakes testing, also auditing. OMES was appropriated 5 million to bring in auditors, we have an office with 108 that we pay already to do that. #oklaed
A7: #OklaEd advocates, put me on speed dial! Let's work together to make Oklahoma education top ranked. We can do that together by using facts and pragmatic solutions.
A7 All Oklahoma educators should have home yard signs out for candidates that are pro-education. We need to especially support, encourage & amplify the voices of educators / retired educators running for office! #oklaed
A7: #OklaEd advocates, put me on speed dial! Let's work together to make Oklahoma education top ranked. We can do that together by using facts and pragmatic solutions.

Create a long term investment plan that rewards schools for innovation and efficiencies and holds schools accountable for results. Can’t go another 10 years without an investment in our greatest economic development tool—our public school system. #Oklaed
I have heard the exact same thing from three superintendents in my district. That’s why next year is so important to show continued progress that will encourage people to get into teaching. #oklaed
A7: Be sure to invite and find time to speak/learn from each other. Open lines of communicatio early helps create and build sustainable support and relationships #OKLAED 🍎
A7: We can no longer sit back silently and assume that the new folks know what we want or need. We need to show them the respect of keeping them connected to the people they represent so that they can in turn focus on our needs and interests. #oklaed
Throwing more money at schools is not the answer. If it was, NY would have the best schools in the nation.
You don't see parents rushing to put their kids in a NY public school. #oklaed
A7 Build rapport now. Be supportive of pro-public-ed candidates. Really important: remember that Apples come dressed in both red and blue. There are fabulous advocates for education on both sides of the aisle. #oklaed
A7 Call and introduce, meet f2f, invite them to your classroom and school, have students make a video of introduction, email them, follow them on soc med etc. etc. #oklaed
A5) It's time for the anger associated with the walk-out to end. The collective voice of #OklaEd must be positive with our legislators. (Not that they are perfect...but let's build, not burn, bridges -- esp. with those on our side.) #OklaEd
A6) It’s important to not just vote but also vote smart (🍎). I will continue to put much needed information in front of people so they can do just that. #oklaed
Parents already decide where their children go to school by choosing to live where they live. School choice is, in most cases, terrible for those that don't have a true choice.
#oklaed
A7-P3-As a community volunteer, I have long ago established relationships with many elected officials throughout our party. Reaching across the aisle is already my priority. I won’t be in a majority and we must make allies now. #OklaEd
A7. Open the dialogue early and often. Providing input and listening. Two way communication. Make an effort to collaboratively find solutions to issues. #oklaed
A:7 Relationships! I let all of the candidates in my district know that if they ever have any questions about how legislation would effect our schools, I am at their disposal. #oklaed
A7) #oklaed should encourage teachers to keep using their political voice to educate new legislators. Teachers have been the most credible and influential this election year. #oklaed should study up on activism strategies that are grassroots, not top down. #votelouder
A7 - Make yourself known at the Capitol from day 1. Call, email, show up! And get to know #okleg assistants too- they can help when you might be having a hard time getting your legislator! I mean @okcmeagan & I are pretty much besties. 😂🤷🏼♀️#oklaed
From what I understand thus far of @joy4ok@oksde plan for a dashboard approach to accountability, it is by far the most equitable I have seen in #oklaed. It still has work I am sure and will have flaws, but it at least takes a holistic approach to school accountability.

After the elections, reach out and talk to us about your concerns and help us find solutions to helping OK become the best in public education. #oklaed
A7) We should all be looking for common ground. Fighting over which side is right only serves the parties and does not fix the root of the problem. Everyone wants a quality education system so lets work together to have one in Oklahoma #oklaed
A7: Closing school on Election Day is a great start. Also, advocacy committees within districts; with representatives from several different schools as well as parents and community members. #oklaed
Legislators could file fewer bills that try to tell teachers how to teach. Be consistent with rhetoric on over-regulation. If you don’t like over-regulation in the private sector, don’t do it to schools and teachers. #Oklaed
Hey #oklaed friends, research on T recruitment & retention shows that grow-your-own pipeline programs are among the most successful. We are working on one at @utulsa. If you want to brainstorm or want me to send you links to research, reach out! Higher ed is in this with you.
A7) I think it's important that #okleg listens...I have been incredibly disappointed by the lack of this over the yrs. I plan on continuing to reach out and share my Ss and Ts stories #oklaed
A7. Help us out, legislators in the chat tonight, how do you want to hear from us? How can we work together to make sure all of the kiddos in OK are getting the best education? #oklaed
A6
I am in one of those runoffs with an opponent who opposes my #oklaed votes for the teacher pay raise. Advocacy is a year round endeavor, and the best advocacy is a vote for a candidate that supports what you support. I’m lucky to have the best teachers and parents in HD30.
A5 Inside of education, issues like class size, quality PD, strong support from school/district leadership remain. However, we are being challenged particularly on healthcare, infrastructure, retirement savings, among others. #oklaed
You had me at #1 then again at #6. I love how this list encompasses the respect of both the student and teachers!! Thank you so much!! This list is a direct reflection of your classroom experience. #Oklaed
Invite them to district but also be purposeful in setting up appointments w them to visit. Build a working relationship, make ourselves available to answer questions as leaders. Set up opps for them to visit/share w parents. Get to know them, it opens door for dialogue. #OklaEd
Call their office. Meet for coffee. Email their LA. Ask for their cell. Don’t be afraid to text them. These people work for you. By the way my personal cell is 405-641-1854. If you are teacher in HD 90 on this chat you probably already call and Text me. If not here it is. #oklaed
A7 We need to make ourselves know to those who represent us. Encourage them to speak to education groups and retired teacher groups. That way they won't forget them when they get to OKC. Don't be a stranger and don't wait until it is a crisis to contact them. #oklaed
A7) Stop making people the enemy based on political party or attacking supportive incumbents based on one vote you didn’t like. It’s not effective advocacy and the quickest way to burn bridges. #oklaed
A8: Educate, educate, educate. PD fo sho! Marijuana still will not be allowed in schools, but there are lots of moving parts to this. Since I’m on the MMWG, lookin forward to y’alls suggestions. #OklaEd
I think tough choices need to be made. We have to decide if Athletics or education are more important. We can't have everything we want. That is life.
#oklaed
Agreed! I my world we discuss many potential solutions to problems and a lot go by the wayside but then there is that one that changes all situations. #oklaed

A4: Determine a PPE $ that actually funds services required in law. If the state aid formula had ever been fully funded, we wouldn't be in this mess. The travesty is an ongoing willingness to ignore the fact that we've "reformed" schools and now we need to invest in #oklaed!
Great idea. Roads advocates reach out quickly to candidates to make sure we know about their plan too (and make it sound very predetermined as the agreed upon direction). #oklaed
A7: they should know you by name or face. I know my D’s at The Capitol know me well. And I need to work on getting to know the R’s as well. We can’t get much done if I’m not willing to cross the aisle. #oklaed
Put skin in the game during campaigns. Knock doors for them, make calls for them. Most importantly, make a personal connection with them and share your story and be passionate (but polite) in your advocacy efforts for your students. #Oklaed
#OklaEd A7: Have bus tour to schools around state with tour and Q/A at each stop. Have a regular informational education luncheon for interested legislators, especially new. Keep track of who participates and who doesn’t!!!
A8: Educate, educate, educate. PD fo sho! Marijuana still will not be allowed in schools, but there are lots of moving parts to this. Since I’m on the MMWG, lookin forward to y’alls suggestions. #OklaEd
A8: 1st- How we plan to administer the Rx if prescribed to our Ss when other drugs have failed. Safely and without controversy. That should be our main objective. #oklaed

A8- There has to be an honest approach to teens and the use of cannabis. Clearing out distortions and getting rid of stigma are things we all need to do. Access to therapy and mental health services will reduce recreational use for minors. Start talking now! #OklaEd
#cpsreds will not close on Election Day. Want to make sure parents are free to go vote. Will encourage Ts to vote during plan before and after school. #oklaed. #earlyvote
A7: Closing school on Election Day is a great start. Also, advocacy committees within districts; with representatives from several different schools as well as parents and community members. #oklaed
Agreed. It doesn't matter what party anyone is affiliated with, there will always be times of agreement/disagreement. Use it to dialogue and build rapport #oklaed
A8) The largest issue for #oklaed is the next measure of recreational marijuana and how the availability of it will filter to our students at all levels. #oklaed
A7) Build relationships with these new #okleg to get them aware. Follow up with them and keep up with how the vote on stuff and keep them accountable. #oklaed
A7: We need to be working together collectively in our districts to get to know our candidates. We have been sharing information as teachers in our district regarding candidates and elections. #oklaed
After the elections, reach out and talk to us about your concerns and help us find solutions to helping OK become the best in public education. #oklaed
A8: Let's not blow it out of proportion. Let's not stigmatize it via school administration. How do we handle kids on other prescriptions in our schools? We adapt for when that impacts school performance. Medical marijuana use should be treated no differently. #OklaEd
If you watch the news you know I’m more than a little involved in this issue. The people spoke in 788. It is the #oklaleg job to implement the will of the people. We will do that. A functioning system is good for #oklaed but at this point I cannot even guess the numbers.
A8: Let's not blow it out of proportion. Let's not stigmatize it via school administration. How do we handle kids on other prescriptions in our schools? We adapt for when that impacts school performance. Medical marijuana use should be treated no differently. #OklaEd
A8: Better figure it out, full legalization is coming not just to OK. We’re educators, we need honest education early. Supportive wrap around services for students. You’re lying to yourself if you think kids don’t have access as it is. No scare tactics; it undermines us #oklaed
A7
Reach out to us, host a meet & greet in the district. We want to hear from you. Group settings are a great way to hear from several people at once. #oklaed
A8 I think we should ALWAYS view it as medical marijuana. We need to be aware there will be instances where it will be abused and will affect the students in some way. We will need inservice on what to look for. #oklaed
A8 - Ummm, I teach HS students. We have real conversations about choices ALL THE TIME. This doesn’t change that at ALL. #makegoodchoices#mommagateley#oklaed
A7 Most legislators want to or are willing to engage with folks, be it at a local coffee shop, townhalls, emails, social media. Don't be bashful. Don't expect to agree at every turn, but be willing to work together. #oklaed
A:8 Districts are working hard on this already! I know lawyers have been dispatched to Colorado and other places that have already navigated this path. Soooo many new issues. #oklaed
A7: The #OklaEd community needs to stand united. We have many groups that would like to divide our common goals & create infighting. Stay focused on what is best for all of Ok's Ss w a consistent message & I believe we can be incredibly successful in the coming sessions.
Understandably not your fault, no implication there. It is a very hard thing to truly measure the impacts of schools on students and we (US and #oklaed) have a tendency to try and oversimplify it, which leads to unnecessarily negative views of teachers and schools. Frustrating.

@stephaniebice, @scottok16, @shawnhime, @joy4ok, @oksde
A4 - We should fund #oklaed to be nationally competitive for teacher salary and per pupil/operations. A good start is stabilizing the funding to continue to lead the region, which I'm calling for in form of a 4 Year Education Plan https://t.co/Y9pQS7Zn9z
I don’t think closing is necessary. Thanks to many recent changes, there are 3 days of early voting, and absentee voting along with Election Day. But voting has to be a priority for all (not just ed but everyone!) #OklaEd
I love that so many #okleg were here tonight for this chat but we do this every Sunday night. I would love to see you here more than just once a month. I do appreciate your presence tonight though. But@#oklaed is in dire need of your help.
A8 the federal laws that may supersede state law. Beyond that, I don't have enough information to honestly or thoughtfully answer. As a shark would say, "for that reason, I'm out." #OKLAED
A7) Just because they get elected doesn't mean they know education. #OklaEd should be reaching out to help them learn from Day1. But show as much respect as you want for OK Ts. #BuildTogether
A8: Bring them to school! Most people have no idea what schools are really like - how they are same in many ways and yet unique to their communities. #OkLeg members want to do the right thing; #oklaed just needs to let them see what that means in your school. @AlphaPlusEdu
There will be complexities as w everything, but should he in line w other prescription drug policies etc. it is hard to know what all the nuances will be at this time. Be practical, collaborate w others, seek legal counsel, etc. still early on this one. #OklaEd
A8) Only that the push now seems to be amend the constitution to permit recreational marijuana. Many folks seem to be so untrusting that our state leaders can make appropriate decisions. #oklaed#failedleadership
A9- We are excited about the 2018-19 school year! Having 3 kids in MPS and being a very sociable person has kept me on the pulse of house district 53. With all this political interest renewed, I hope to see citizens stay involved. Tell me what we need! #OklaEd#alwaysavailable
A8: This will be one of the issues up for discussion w/ OSSBA attorneys at the Aug. 23 pre-conference sessions before the OSSBA/@CCOSA education leadership conference! Don't forget to register! #oklaedhttps://t.co/kvIhp9TeZb
Legislators could file fewer bills that try to tell teachers how to teach. Be consistent with rhetoric on over-regulation. If you don’t like over-regulation in the private sector, don’t do it to schools and teachers. #Oklaed
A8) I am seeing people once again use this issue to point fingers and bash #okleg leadership. Not helpful when our focus needs to stay on public education and relationships are key. #oklaed
A6: In the spirit of your response I would encourage everyone to read or listen to this book on audio. I will really illuminate why we are in the place we are and how to identify candidates who only work for a dark money donor class. #oklaedhttps://t.co/z3rdmaEGWi
A6) I inform teachers and parents where they can look up past votes and campaign financials for their reps. — It reveals a lot about where they truly stand. #oklaed
A9: Newsletters and social media. With all the bad events and stories, let’s work to promote and share positive stories that highlight the terrific work/leadership of our teachers, parents, & students.
#oklaed 🍎
A7: Building relationships and share information! LOL
Seriously though, we must not have an adversarial relationship with #okleg. All that does is create more division, and assure us that when it is education vs. ________ we will not get chosen. #BeRespectful, it works. #oklaed
A9. Ooooh! I’m doing a general weekly newsletter for parents this year. What if I add my legislators to the email list and send it over to them too? #oklaed
A9) I always answer questions from the community in a positive way. When someone asks me if I’m ready for school, my answer is ALWAYS, “Yes! I love my job! I’m ready to teach!” #oklaed
A9: the best way possible through social media. I am constantly bragging on my district bc I am so happy where I am at. Just ask me I’ll tell ya. I love teaching at an art integrated, ABL lab having, restorative district. #oklaed
A9) We've had a meet and greet with leg in Tuttle this summer. Thanks to our chamber. I've met with many other key people at other gatherings. Updating website and increasing social media visibility to share positive stories. We decide how our story is told. #oklaed#tuttleEDU
A8: educating the public/Ss/families on all issues creates and maintains a well-rounded society. Education isn’t limited to the confounds of classroom walls nor a school building. #Oklaed
A9) This almost needs to function like a PR campaign. Get someone to create a unified message and rally your troops, long before you need parent/community support or there is a bond issue you need passed. #oklaed
I agree! #oklaed needs to honor the constitutional right of teachers to speak out in their own private time and spaces in civil ways to support pro-education policies and hold non-supportive candidates accountable. #votelouder
A7 We need to make ourselves know to those who represent us. Encourage them to speak to education groups and retired teacher groups. That way they won't forget them when they get to OKC. Don't be a stranger and don't wait until it is a crisis to contact them. #oklaed
A9: As a former teacher, I have👂to the ground, I use any and all Capitol connections to help answer questions for my local Norman/Noble teachers, & beyond. I have open-door policy. Reach out no matter if in HD 46 or not. We’re in this together✊🏼 #OklaEd
A9: I'm loud and proud of what I do and the district I work in! I will tell anyone who will listen that Mid Del ROCKS!!! Social Media, the grocery store line, the library, where ever I am and to whomever will listen! #oklaed
We invite them to events, share on social media, websites etc. We will be amping this up a bit this year w several approaches. Sometimes we forget to share ALL the good as educators & there is a LOT of it we must get out! This is a + for us to keep funding at forefront! #OklaEd
A9 - I share stories constantly. Good stories, bad stories, all of it. Decision makers need to hear stories. They need names & faces.
My students write letters and talk to lawmakers themselves. This year, I am going to get my Ss to podcast! #oklaed
So many ways to share great things happening in #oklaed! Social media; invitations to legislators, key influencers, media; and op-eds. Need help or ideas? Hit me up at @OSSBAoklahoma. Would love to help!
A9 When something cool happens, brag on it. Leverage relationships with legislators and make sure they know about the great things you are doing. Social media is great. Text them. E-mail them. Call them. #oklaed
A.9. As a principal. I always talked to upper admin about awesome things happening in my school. Weekly email to parents to share great info. Thanks to awesome counselor @MissSutherlin we had an amazing mentoring program of community volunteers. I could have done more. #oklaed
Y'all my head is still spinning from the speed of this chat. Great job @shawnhime ! Looking forward to going back and reading more answers. Have a great week everyone! #oklaed
