A1: In my early elementary class, we read LOTS of books with models of positive relationships, I intentionally build opportunities for Ss to connect with each other into our daily routines, and I continually coach Ss through respectfully managing conflicts that arise. #pln365

  • sew1080 Sep 11 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A1 The ideal situation is to not worry about curriculum for the first few weeks of school and simply focus on getting to know your kids. Unfortunately, assessments are required to be done by Sept 21 and that takes precedence. #pln365
  • MrSeanOlson Sep 11 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A1: Step 1 for me in any type of leadership is to model the actions for Ss to see. Ts need to demonstrate this, in front of Ss before it can be expected from them. #pln365
  • amynicolebettis Sep 11 @ 8:37 PM EDT
Feedback is so important - and I love what you said about "cultivate the good every day"! #pln365

  • sew1080 Sep 11 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A2 I really liked my morning meeting time. Ss would share almost anything, and I was able to model how to actively listen and respond. #pln365
  • emilyfranESL Sep 11 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A2: I think that for Ss to feel comfortable to share their ideas and feelings they need to FIRST feel we value THEIR ideas and feelings. What's the point on sharing and it's not accepted and/or valued. #pln365
  • LemarrTreadwell Sep 11 @ 8:43 PM EDT
Hello #pln365. Lemarr Treadwell, Fresno Ca jumping in.
  • dawblack Sep 11 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A2: Practice, practice, practice. It seems like in many classrooms these ideas are stifled and students have given up their voice. They need to re-learn that their voice has power for good and can make a difference. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 11 @ 8:43 PM EDT
Good to see you always! #pln365
    In reply to @MrEugenePark
  • dawblack Sep 11 @ 8:43 PM EDT
Love the idea of modeling here. This is something that will take practice. We must be intentional about this. #pln365

  • amynicolebettis Sep 11 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A2: After establishing our classroom as a SAFE PLACE, my Ss engage in LOTS of turn-and-talk experiences to express opinions/feelings, group work where everyone's ideas are needed, & as we read books we work to understand/empathize with character feelings & learn from them.#pln365
  • MichaelHansonOC Sep 11 @ 8:44 PM EDT
Hi Emily, I agree with what you said. I know that it is a slow process. Distrust of adults happens over years for students, needs time to develop. #pln365
  • MrSeanOlson Sep 11 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A2: Represent feelings/ideas as more than just words for communication. To boost understanding of others, start by validating their own feelings/ideas, Teach how to be self-reflective. ID your own then attempt to understand others. #pln365
    In reply to @amynicolebettis
  • Hahne_Elyse Sep 11 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A2 give students outlets to let loose and get their feelings out. Circle up/morning meeting, have a safe place/break area, social skills/social stories, model expected behaviors, and know behavior doesn’t shape overnight. #pln365
  • dawblack Sep 11 @ 8:44 PM EDT
Agree with this. It is easy to be leery about sharing if they have been burned before. #pln365
    In reply to @emilyfranESL
  • PreK33 Sep 11 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A2: We need to model and guide our students in the correct steps for "how" to communicate. Ss don't really understand how to talk to each other and how to listen to others. Modeling and guidance. #PLN365
    In reply to @amynicolebettis
  • amynicolebettis Sep 11 @ 8:44 PM EDT
Morning meeting time is one of my absolute favorite times of the school day!! There are a lot of time slots that can be skipped or substituted, but I hold sacred our morning meeting!! #pln365
    In reply to @sew1080
  • TeachMrB Sep 11 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A2) Provide opportunities for Voice and Choice. Sometimes having options for how to communicate needs helps. Most importantly, create a safe sharing environment. #pln365
  • sew1080 Sep 11 @ 8:45 PM EDT
When I taught kindergarten, I had to continue to remind myself that it took 5 years to create the behavior, it's not going to be fixed in a week. #pln365
    In reply to @Hahne_Elyse
  • emilyfranESL Sep 11 @ 8:45 PM EDT
I agree! How sad how some have to clean up someone else's mess! I'm glad you care!! #pln365
    In reply to @MichaelHansonOC
  • MrEugenePark Sep 11 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A2. In order to give Ss a real voice, you have to listen, but just as important, you have to actually take action on what they say. If they share and you do nothing, they will learn that they don’t truly have a voice. #pln365
  • dawblack Sep 11 @ 8:45 PM EDT
This also seems like a good time to model and exhibit good reflective practices. #pln365
    In reply to @sew1080
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 11 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A2: Actively listen, and ask more questions. Talk with students not AT them. #pln365
    In reply to @amynicolebettis

Yes, so important to follow up! #pln365

GREAT point. We must make the first "move" towards Ss when it comes to building relationships. #pln365
    In reply to @emilyfranESL
  • JWMcMillan803 Sep 11 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A2: Give them time to speak. Ss know that they can come to me with any issue or concern at any time. #pln365
    In reply to @amynicolebettis
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 11 @ 8:46 PM EDT

    In reply to @MrEugenePark, @Cathig8r
  • Cathig8r Sep 11 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A2 Communication needs to be open and honest. I share events in my life with my Ss and they reciprocate. It helps to have a few Ss a 2nd year to set the tone for me. 1 this year did my introduction for me. Ss were amazed by how much he knew about me. #pln365
    In reply to @amynicolebettis
  • LemarrTreadwell Sep 11 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A2. Share their stories digitally. I use @flipgrid @Sway and Teams @MicrosoftTeams, add a little Skype in the Classroom. Sway and Flipgrid are free in Microsoft. Empower students through voice and choice! #pln365 @MicrosoftTeams

Especially our younger students!! How to speak to other people and listen to their ideas are HUGE parts of what our Ss must learn. I have a little Lunch Bunch meeting to help my Ss grow with this skill in an informal setting. I LOVE getting to know Ss over lunch! #pln365

A3) A trusting environment breeds an culture of risk taking and learning from those risks. Ss must learn that the learning process includes learning from mistakes. #pln365
  • dawblack Sep 11 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A3: Quite simply, students learn more when they like who they are around. They are also more likely to be courageous learners in taking risks when they sense support. #pln365

  • JWMcMillan803 Sep 11 @ 8:51 PM EDT

I love your thinking - it's hard for me to step back in the moment and react like you did... it's usually after the moment has passed or in the middle of the night that I would have thought WHY NOT LET HIM? IT'S HIS ROOM TOO! What a wonderful teacher you are!! #pln365

#pln365 this is the only way Ss will learn how to deal with difficult situations. Teachers are a child’s first look into a society where ppl judge you before really knowing you and they have to learn to coexist in order to be successful #LifeSkills101

#pln365 student/teacher relationships are also important because many students come in fromnundtable home situations and school (teachers) are their only sense if family and normalcy.
