Good evening y’all! I’m Elyse and I’m in the Grapevine, Texas area. I’m a Social Emotional Behavior support teacher and love it. My why is the students! Meeting and supporting their needs makes my day. #pln365
Hi all! Sean Olson here from southern NJ. I am a high school math teacher, activity adviser, and athletic coach. My why is providing the best experiences possible for all of my Ss, athletes, and activity participants. #pln365
Good evening #pln365! Mike B, Middle School SE teacher from Alpena, MI. My why is easy. It's all about the kids and being a part of their journey to greatness! #kidsdeserveit
Means #pln365 time!
Hi, y'all, Cathi from central NJ, hs sped English teacher
They last thing I ever wanted to do was teach.. until I took Exceptional People at UF. It was an interactive class about people with disabilities. Prof picked me out of 750 ppl as a future edugator.
A1 You Listen, Give students opportunities, and cultivate the good every day. Giving positive and consistent feedback allows the relationships to flourish and connections to be built. #pln365
Dave from Colorado here, where I lead an internal #PBL academy. Probably a little different than others here in that I became a teacher to have the opportunity to teach the Christian faith and make a spiritual difference with students. #pln365
A1: In my early elementary class, we read LOTS of books with models of positive relationships, I intentionally build opportunities for Ss to connect with each other into our daily routines, and I continually coach Ss through respectfully managing conflicts that arise. #pln365
A1 The ideal situation is to not worry about curriculum for the first few weeks of school and simply focus on getting to know your kids. Unfortunately, assessments are required to be done by Sept 21 and that takes precedence. #pln365
A1: Step 1 for me in any type of leadership is to model the actions for Ss to see. Ts need to demonstrate this, in front of Ss before it can be expected from them. #pln365
A1) Know the names of your SS! This shows that they are a crucial part of our classroom community. Next, find some sort of connection with the Ss. The crazier, the better! #pln365
A1: This semester I instituted "Monday meetings" (which flow into Tuesdays to finish) to check in with each student on academic progress and other concerns. Very successful so far! #pln365
A1: Step 1 for me in any type of leadership is to model the actions for Ss to see. Ts need to demonstrate this, in front of Ss before it can be expected from them. #pln365
A1 It starts with empathy, respecting Ss enough to listen to and understand their experiences that shape who they are. That's where you have to start... with where they are at... #pln365
A2: I think that for Ss to feel comfortable to share their ideas and feelings they need to FIRST feel we value THEIR ideas and feelings.
What's the point on sharing and it's not accepted and/or valued.
#pln365
A2: Practice, practice, practice. It seems like in many classrooms these ideas are stifled and students have given up their voice. They need to re-learn that their voice has power for good and can make a difference. #pln365
A2: After establishing our classroom as a SAFE PLACE, my Ss engage in LOTS of turn-and-talk experiences to express opinions/feelings, group work where everyone's ideas are needed, & as we read books we work to understand/empathize with character feelings & learn from them.#pln365
Hi Emily, I agree with what you said. I know that it is a slow process. Distrust of adults happens over years for students, needs time to develop. #pln365
A2: Represent feelings/ideas as more than just words for communication. To boost understanding of others, start by validating their own feelings/ideas, Teach how to be self-reflective. ID your own then attempt to understand others. #pln365
A2 give students outlets to let loose and get their feelings out. Circle up/morning meeting, have a safe place/break area, social skills/social stories, model expected behaviors, and know behavior doesn’t shape overnight. #pln365
A2: We need to model and guide our students in the correct steps for "how" to communicate. Ss don't really understand how to talk to each other and how to listen to others. Modeling and guidance. #PLN365
Morning meeting time is one of my absolute favorite times of the school day!! There are a lot of time slots that can be skipped or substituted, but I hold sacred our morning meeting!! #pln365
A2) Provide opportunities for Voice and Choice. Sometimes having options for how to communicate needs helps. Most importantly, create a safe sharing environment. #pln365
When I taught kindergarten, I had to continue to remind myself that it took 5 years to create the behavior, it's not going to be fixed in a week. #pln365
A2. In order to give Ss a real voice, you have to listen, but just as important, you have to actually take action on what they say. If they share and you do nothing, they will learn that they don’t truly have a voice. #pln365
A2 Communication needs to be open and honest. I share events in my life with my Ss and they reciprocate. It helps to have a few Ss a 2nd year to set the tone for me. 1 this year did my introduction for me. Ss were amazed by how much he knew about me. #pln365
A2. Share their stories digitally. I use @flipgrid@Sway and Teams @MicrosoftTeams, add a little Skype in the Classroom. Sway and Flipgrid are free in Microsoft. Empower students through voice and choice! #pln365@MicrosoftTeams
Today for example, I had a student who wanted to move something in the room...I said no. Then I thought, Why not let him?!? It's his room as much as its mine! #pln365
Especially our younger students!! How to speak to other people and listen to their ideas are HUGE parts of what our Ss must learn. I have a little Lunch Bunch meeting to help my Ss grow with this skill in an informal setting. I LOVE getting to know Ss over lunch! #pln365
Today for example, I had a student who wanted to move something in the room...I said no. Then I thought, Why not let him?!? It's his room as much as its mine! #pln365
A3 Students need to feel safe, and when they have a rapport with someone, the safety and trust is there. They know that no matter what happens on Tuesday, Wednesday is a new day with a clean slate. #pln365
A3 It all comes down to growth. We want our students to trust and cultivate relationships to enhance their learning. Having positive relationships with staff and peers enhances learning and makes it a more learning rich environment. #pln365
A3) A trusting environment breeds an culture of risk taking and learning from those risks. Ss must learn that the learning process includes learning from mistakes. #pln365
A3: Quite simply, students learn more when they like who they are around. They are also more likely to be courageous learners in taking risks when they sense support. #pln365
A3: The benefits of student rapport with friends and teachers are limitless! An increased ability/desire to learn, significantly reduced behavior concerns, the life-long benefits of growing high quality social skills, increased joy for everyone involved, and so much more. #pln365
A3. I think it's the other way around. Teachers build rapport with their students. Because … Kids Don't Learn, from People They Don't Like... Rita Pierson. #pln365
I love your thinking - it's hard for me to step back in the moment and react like you did... it's usually after the moment has passed or in the middle of the night that I would have thought WHY NOT LET HIM? IT'S HIS ROOM TOO! What a wonderful teacher you are!! #pln365
A3: Our students are our future! They need to have good communication skills and the tools to build strong relationships if our world is going to be strong! #PLN365
A3: Ss need to build rapport with Ts so T can personalize the learning experience for them. Ss need to build rapport with peers to foster positive learning environments which create a community of learners. Not just a group of individual students that make up a class. #pln365
I think all of us can become more like this if we take the time to be reflective about our days and practices. Sometimes it just means developing new habits. #pln365
A4: Dig deeper. Get in their business. Ask questions. Reassure them you care.
THIS is how relationships are built and the bridge for reluctant Ss is built to encourage them to interact with others.
#pln365
A1 #pln365 I think having a meeting weekly where student can feel safe sharing their experiences. Peeks and valleys of the weekend or of the school week.
A4: Intentionally pair reluctant connectors with Ss with common interests, devote extra think-time for Ss before share time, create atmosphere where all ideas are valued/appreciated, and be very aware of reluctant connector's body language to help you know what they need. #pln365
A4 #pln365 hurt people hurt people.. same is true for reluctant students. They have been let down before and we need to dedicate a little more time, effort, and patience to these kiddos because they need it the most.
A4 Everybody starts communicating from different places, just as with skills. We must meet them where they are, find the missing pieces and encourage them to stretch outside their comfort zone. #pln365
A2 #pln365 I think by modeling and providing sentence stems to help them communicate effectively. Also, modeling how to respond towards those that share.
A4: If you want to encourage it then prove to Ss these 3 things:
1) It appeals to their interests. (engage)
2) They can do it. (support)
3) Why it is worth it. (risk vs reward)
#pln365
Jumping in a little late this morning, Kanako from Vietnam, 2nd year EAL Specialist working with predominantly Vietnamese students at an international school. #pln365
A2 #pln365 I think by modeling and providing sentence stems to help them communicate effectively. Also, modeling how to respond towards those that share.
A4) Listen, listen, listen. Don't brush a student off when they start talking, especially the reluctant ones. I know we are all busy, but sometimes YOU may be the only adult they have in their lives that will dedicate time for them. #pln365
When talking with a mentor of mine, I asked him how to we get Ss to start letting down the walls they've built up around them. How do we get them to drop their guard? He replied, "Love" #pln365
A3) Building rapport with teachers and peers is so important in creating a safe classroom environment where Ss can be risk takers, innovators, explorers, and inquirers! #pln365
Thanks! It wasn't the plan but it was a teachable moment. He caught the ball and ran with it, and is definitely a leader in the room. I am lucky to have him in class again. #pln365
A2) Being open and vulnerable about your own feelings and ideas first and foremost. Sentence stems and feeling word charts for talking about feelings and expressing ideas, addressing emotions and conflict when they arise help too. #PLN365
A4: Intentionally pair reluctant connectors with Ss with common interests, devote extra think-time for Ss before share time, create atmosphere where all ideas are valued/appreciated, and be very aware of reluctant connector's body language to help you know what they need. #pln365
#pln365 this is the only way Ss will learn how to deal with difficult situations. Teachers are a child’s first look into a society where ppl judge you before really knowing you and they have to learn to coexist in order to be successful #LifeSkills101
#pln365 student/teacher relationships are also important because many students come in fromnundtable home situations and school (teachers) are their only sense if family and normalcy.
