We chat every Tuesday night at 8:30-9:30 pm CST. All are welcome, especially EarlyEd teachers, leaders & experts. Co-founded & moderated by @techwnancy @JessicaCabeen & @VealHeidi
#ECEchat is kicking off NOW! I’m so excited that my friends @KLCseedtotree & @megwhittaker5 are guest hosting tonight! They have a great chat planned!!!
#ecechat#edit2000mane My name is Abby Crerie, and I'm a freshman at the University of Georgia. I am interested in finding out how frequent use of technology within the classroom, specifically music apps, influences the attention span of elementary school students.
A1: Love to use creation or production apps on iPads with our youngest learners. Also love some early coding bots like Bee Bot and Code-a-Pillar. #ecechat#Lawsome
We have really started using ABC Mouse to our advantage this year, it has so much to offer. We of course create with felt board, PebbleGo research, and create digital books with @BookCreatorApp! #ecechat
A1(cont.) Ss need to know the keyboard, know some of productivity tools, and understand how to navigate the web safely and using digital citizenship #ecechat
A1: Using tech where students are: - learning 21st century tech skills
- allows them to create /design / present authentic work - meet & interact w/ global students #ecechat
...performance and their ability to focus. Using applications that stream music for free would be ideal. If anyone has any suggestions to this idea, they would be greatly appreciated! #ecechat#edit2000mane
Our 3s and 4s found Dot and Dash a little difficult in their first attempts in our STEAM lab. We may have to introduce them in a more controlled environment in the library first to get maximum potential. #ecechat#Lawsome
So much to learn! We have iPads, smartboards, display systems and lots of passionate people working on opportunities to integrate tech into instruction. #ECEChat
#ecechat#edit2000mane Unfortunately, I haven't been able to implement my ideas in a classroom setting, as I am not a teacher. Using iPads, laptops, or smartphones for streaming music would allow students to take small breaks throughout the school day and recharge their minds.
A2: I rotate the Osmo each week between my literacy center (using Words), math center (using Tangrams), and creativity center using Masterpiece or Monster) #ecechat#Lawsome
Q2: In library, we read a story like Lizette's Green Sock or Shape Song Swingalong and then code with Bee Bot to find matching socks or matching shapes. In STEAM lab, we retold fairy tales, and Ss are using technology to help with retelling (coding bots, Smart Tables). #ecechat
Well this is amazing! I’ve been out of the classroom for 6 years and tech has changed so much! I’m thankful for chats like this to keep me up on current trends! #ecechat
What a terrific example of what on-point tech integration in #ECE looks like! It is planned, purposeful, and incorporated to foster collaboration, learning, & communication. #ECEchat@TEC_Center
A2: I use smartboard for my calendar, math games, etc. Seesaw to upload what we are doing in the classroom. Teaching the kids to be engineers through coding and other challenges. #ecechat
A2 we are studying I build I create so this week they will draw a blueprint for a house they will build in block center using the doodle app, we will also draw with Osmo monster in Spanish which builds vocabulary. We will share these pics on SeeSaw our online portfolio. #ECEchat
A3: First hold a conversation with the Ts to find out their tech level, then assist them in trying (1) type of technology for their strongest core subject. #ecechat
A3: Code-a-pillar is super easy to learn and teach to little ones! And apps like Feltboard and Book Creator are super hands-on and engaging #ecechat#Lawsome
The feedback is that students are learning so much: letter identification. letter sound, phonemic awareness, print awareness; and that they love using it daily! #ECEchat
A3: I would start w/what you feel most comfortable with. As a 1st yr T, I’ve used our iPads & smart board mainly, but our media specialist is great at helping w/tech questions & showing me more! #ecechat
A3: at some point you need to jump in, budgets drive purchases of devices, but plenty of free programming to get forward moving teachers going right away, sometimes you just need to go and make improvements along the way. #ecechat
For iPad/smartphone users, I feel that Quizlet is a great resource for students. It's easy to use, and there are multiple ways for students to study and share their knowledge with each other. #ecechat#edit2000mane
A3: For beginning teachers with iPads, Shadow Puppet and Chatterpix Kids apps for creating in very simple steps for students. For coding: Osmo and BeeBot. Our Code-a-Pillars are a favorite but aren't as predictable in movement, and they are starting to fail at year 2. #ecechat
Our 3s and 4s found Dot and Dash a little difficult in their first attempts in our STEAM lab. We may have to introduce them in a more controlled environment in the library first to get maximum potential. #ecechat#Lawsome
A3: Start by modeling expectations and give gradual small task on the device, I would say start with the devices already provided to you. Don’t go out and purchase more until you have utilized and understand different tools available #ecechat
A3 We encourage Ts to play with unplugged tangible tech i.e. hex bugs with straw mazes design ed by students, code n go robot mouse from Learning Resources, BeeBot or BluBot from Terrapin or focus on home to school communication with tech to get started #ECEchat
That is how we started - Home to school communication using SeeSaw as the place to start our teachers. We have class sets of iPads and tech integrationist to help support teachers who are ready to dip a toe. #ecechat
Not yet, still working out the kinks. We created a coding activity for Dash in our STEAM lab last month but found that teachers weren't using it. Too much of a learning curve for the teachers even though we introduced it during Academy. They need more play time with it! #ecechat

A3: Start small with iPad apps. Three or four solid production, creation apps are all you to need to begin creating with students: Chatterpix Kids, Shadow Puppet, Book Creator, and tools for communicating with parents like Seesaw. Go deep instead of wide. #ecechat#Lawsome

We got 10 class ipads, a smart board, & then variety of tech things to check out (magnetic tiles, IO Blocks, Spheros, Code & go mice, Blue Bots) #ecechat
A3 makining e-books with kids as a language experience approach. Super easy with @BookCreatorApp! You can take photos of kids Work with paper/pencil and have them record audio narration. #ecechat
A4: using ipads to journal, respond to literature with FeltBoard or @ChatterPixIt , transition response on interactive board. All simple, allows for S perspective using tech as a creative outlet #ecechat
Students could use their iPads for various applications. Music applications, Quizlet, or Kahoot are just a few fun and simple ways for students to stay engaged and excited about what they're learning in the classroom. #ecechat#edit2000mane
#ecechat A4 We use a lot of Mystery Skype and Hangouts. We have taken our elementary and middle school Ss to Russia, Canada, Sweden, France and Israel this year. Heading to Denmark on Friday. Learn geography skills and share culture. Get outside the walls!
A4 I use @seesaw to allow for Ss to create/share creations to Ts and Ps. We app smash, send photos/video; it really gives a 3, 4 or 5 year old a voice. #ecechat
We haven't been able to get Felt Board to work since the last iOS update. The app developer needs to make some updates. Anyone tried it recently with success? #ecechat#Lawsome
A4 creativity & tech - we like toget students making and creating with tech through voice recording, storytelling and designing mazes and paths for robots with classroom materials ie blocks, natural objects etc > storytelling with robots #ecechat
A4: always go back to the end goal first, KWL, pull a tech tool from your toolbox for the specific skill don’t find a tool and place a reason with it #ecechat
If given the choice my 5 year old wants to watch kids (and their parents) playing w/ toys on YouTube. What are your favorite #prek YouTube clip? #ecechat
A4 I’ve seen preK teachers studying farm-table use google maps to see where farms are located relatedto school, & Skype w/farmers to hear how produce makes way to stores. Plot those on maps & use kibo bots to move ‘produce’ to store routing on “map” on floor in room #ecechat
It’s an iPad app that lets kids draw & use stickers to create whatever they would like. They then can record their voice & move the stickers to bring their creation to life, retell a story, etc #ecechat

When our media specialist taught us it, we didn’t have an issue & my Ss use it daily during one of their independent reading centers & we’ve never had any problems w/that #ecechat
A4: I use seesaw to incorporate learning through telling a story through writing, taking a picture of their favorite book and records book report, etc. #ecechat
Academy is the weeklong training period we do before school starts each year. This year, we had teachers use several new coding bots and spend time with materials in our outdoor classroom and motor lab. Just wanted to reinforce that we're hitting guidelines EVERYwhere! #ecechat
We’ve used Google Maps to explore what a city is, & my Ss were the same! They loved switching to the street view & seeing all the tall buildings #ecechat
Yes so weird but I guess I would have done the same page if iPads were around at 5. Mommy & Daddy are working a video that begins like Hobby Kids then goes into something he is working on in #prek class 😉 #ecechat

Teachers loved getting hands-on time with new tools and having dedicated time to talk and plan with each other. Unfortunately, if an adult doesn't use what he learns very quickly, it fades fast. After training, we have to put it to use right away. We are learners, tho! #ecechat
A6: I loved @megwhittaker5 idea of using iPads to journal. I think elementary students would be a lot more receptive to this way of writing, as they are doing it in way that is considered to be more fun and engaging. #ecechat#edit2000mane
Yes - teachers and principals must have the time to be IN BETA. The iLabs and Makerspaces we build must be not simply for the kids but for all learners ⚙️⚙️⚙️ #ecechat

A6: This week, I'm focused on some of the new Smart Lab activities in Smart Notebook. I want to see if they can be brought down to Pre-K level. If so, will share with our teachers. They make creating lessons pretty easy. #ecechat#Lawsome
