Welcome! I am Meredith Johnson, moderator of #BookCampPD and I am "over the moon" that you have joined our #PLN today. Please welcome our guest author, Brian Aspinall @mraspinall who wrote #CodeBreaker
A1) Coding helps us develop critical thinking skills - programs almost never work the first time through. A great chance to focus on growth mindset, risk taking and perseverance. #BookCampPD
A1. We have moved away from the industrialized revolution but many teaching practices remain stuck there. We need to examine each of our instructional strategies. Are we preparing students for the future? #BookCampPD
A1 Beyond the future need... Coding teachers so many critical thinking and analystical skills. It helps solve problems, build franeworks, and test theories. #bookcamppd
A1) Coding helps us develop critical thinking skills - programs almost never work the first time through. A great chance to focus on growth mindset, risk taking and perseverance. #BookCampPD
A1) Coding allows students to ask questions, make observations and receive immediate feedback from the environment in a space where they can feel comfortable trying something new. #BookCampPD
A2) I have used QR codes to bring my bulletin boards to life. So fun watching groups of students scanning content on the wall and then taking their device to a working station. #BookCampPD
A2) I have used QR codes to bring my bulletin boards to life. So fun watching groups of students scanning content on the wall and then taking their device to a working station. #BookCampPD
A2 I started off using the links as I went, but then saved them for later reading. I have used QR codes as a link to a #flipgrid that I want Ps to see. #BookCampPD
A1 Teaching coding today is like teaching Spanish when I was in high school. It is a language all our learners will need. And the thinking skills that are developed throughout the process are amazing! #BookCampPD
A2. I waited until I was finished reading the book and then went back to review the QR codes. It helped to reinforce my thinking and aided in reflection. #BookCampPD
A1: (pre-coffee) Coding teaches Ss to work through problems, to persevere. Also, to work cooperatively, show empathy and how to handle our materials properly #BookCampPD
A2: Like all tech there needs to be a reason to use them I think. I have not really found the passion in using QR and have seen too many just using it for tech "because" I would love to see more reasons. #BookCampPD
A2: Julie, School Psy, CT, jumping in late. I've used QR codes in my SEL lessons. I'll pose a question to my Ss, let them predict the answer, then scan the QR to reveal the answer. They get so excited to see and are so engaged. #BookCampPD
A2 As a music teacher, I try to use QR codes for assignments that have links to audio and video examples, redirects to suggested items before playing, and the assignments themselves. Create a journey to the assignment rather than... HERE IT IS, GO! #bookcamppd
Q3. What ideas do you have that would increase the focus being on the process of learning? How do the elements of time, generation of solutions and moving away from students conforming to our world, influence this focus? #BookCampPD
A2: oops! I didn’t actually use them during my first read. Plans for QR codes next school year now that I know where/when/how to work them in #newcurriculum#BookCampPD
A2: I was shocked at the huge response I got last week when I talked about using QR codes for bathroom passes. Link to 2 different Google Forms - check-out & check-in. #BookCampPD
A3) I think we need an evaluation overhaul. With regards to “embracing failure” - we currently teach in a system in which failure is punished and I am not certain you can quantify soft skills (creativity) with a numerical value. #BookCampPD#ttog
A2 I recently started using QR codes to bring my concert programs to life with additional information, links, advocacy, etc... The paresnt seem to like it and are engaged as well. Helps build connections and share tech the kids are using with the Ps. #bookcamppd
A3) We must move away from the binary notion of grades - right or wrong. We want to encourage new ideas and innovation and that requires trial and error as well as reflection on experiences. #BookCampPD
A3. I agree with @mraspinall that students should be creators of content. During the last few weeks of school, I observed a tremendous increase on Twitter of others posting what students had created. #BookCampPD
The element of time is an issue for me. I only have my Ss for a short amount of time during the day. If I spent that time coding, I wouldn't be able to teach Reading. #BookCampPD
No. Grades don’t help the learner - they are for stakeholders. Descriptive feedback helps the learner - and that needs to be a conversation, not just comments on student work. #BookCampPD
I agree! At my last school, we conducted exit interview to explore with our HS Ss their challenges and successes in developing soft (success) skills. Very effective and inspiring! #BookCampPD
A3: We need to re-evaluate how we evaluate! Allow for more reflection and collaboration. Also, encourage creativity by drawing upon Ss individual strengths and areas of interest. #BookCampPD
A4. @mraspinall - since having your book published, what is a question that someone has asked you that caused you to pause and reflect before answering? #BookCampPD
A4: I have yet to read the book but looking for ideas of how to integrate coding and tech into my LA class. My students having a robotics/coding option they love and I would like to integrate without encroaching on "their" world too much. #BookCampPD
A4) I typically get questions about assessment and coding. Without a curriculum, how do we incorporate it? I see coding as a tool and literacy - giving kids a voice to create content and share ideas in everyday classes. #BookCampPD
Very interesting conversation. Love the idea of adapting but also feel that It should be AND not OR... foreign languages break down barriers and I think we still need to encourage that. #bookcampPD
A1: coding allows Ss to experience a different type of learning that will unlock endless possibilities, it also promotes grit & growth mindset #BookCampPD
A3 Make grading an iterative rather than a final. Use way points and growth.
Why to allow State tests that show GROWTH but mandate that school level grades be something diferent? Time to change. #bookcamppd
I would say it isn’t about them - kids don’t know if they like broccoli until they try it. Robbing them of the experience is a terrible approach. #BookCampPD
A2: One year for family literacy event, we had Ss record videos of themselves sharing a book review and used the QR code to have people access the reviews. We’ve also placed them in the hallways and encourage Ss to research the answer to a specific content question. #BookCampPD
Many thanks to all of you for joining #BookCampPD this morning and to Brian @mraspinall your leadership in helping students become their very best for the future that lies ahead of them, is stellar!
A3: still pre-coffee so...I feel if the students can create their interpretations of the lesson, it will be more meaningful to them. My Ss are seeing “habitats” for the 2nd time this yr. (science & rela) Creating their habitats has them more focused. #BookCampPD
What is your impact, on others in your #PLN, in seeking out professional learning experiences and sharing them? We hope you will encourage others to join #BookCampPD 's #FAR - Friends and Reading during June, July and August! Check out the books https://t.co/9CFlAawfNY
So grateful to have followed #BookCampPD this month while discussing #CodeBreaker. Thank you everyone for your thought leadership and involvement!
Remember:
It is OK to be where you are. It is not OK to stay there. #GrowthMindset
A3: We have to build a culture where risk taking is encouraged, failure is seen as an opportunity to reflect & redirect, and motivate Ss to have grit & a growth mindset #BookCampPD
Beginning June 1st #BookCampPD#FAR - Friends and Reading will focus on @AllysonApsey 's new book! For two weeks there will be 'Slow Chat' questions, give-a-ways, and collaborative opportunities for you and your friends! June 9th @Sara_Utecht will guest moderate. Please retweet!!
