Welcome happy to chat with you!
Welcome !! My name is Jessica and I just finished my first year as librarian at a 5th grade campus with a maker space.
A1 Mine is open to all students, staff, and their families.
Paul from Gonzales CA. I help Ss learn math & hope to make math fun/funny!
A1: I had one in my classroom & it seemed like I had more students wanting to just take the stuff rather than make things
Hi. Dianne from Simi Valley, Ca. A1: Our makerspaces is used by grades TK-6, as well as 5 spec ed classes
Hey! I'm Libbi a 4th grade teacher hoping to learn how to use makers :)
A1-We are starting a school-wide one, so I assume all Ss/Ts would use.I had already planned to try one in my classroom.
Do the families go to your makerspace during school day as well or just after hours?
A1: I want a simple machines & robotics/engineering/coding makerspace in my library next year 4 my robotics clubs k-6
Once it is made who do you see using it?
Hi Maristella from Oxnard, CA I want to get started this year. I teach Kindergarten & would luv any suggestions!
A1. My grade 5 and 6 students use the maker space I created in my library.
A1 we are open to all students from any part of campus
A1: My Kindergarteners would use the maker space in my classroom.
A2: Makerspace has combo of tech and non-tech, yarn, puppets, robots, stop-motion animation, calligraphy, LEGOs (a must!)
I think a maker space should be open to all students but it is not for everyone! https://t.co/Y8KKkscyx9
A1 we are open to all students from any part of campus
A2-We are starting from scratch. Need ideas. In my room we have green screen, Legos, craft supplies, cardboard, tape.
A2 We have a Lego door and table, robots, duct tape, drones, origami paper, coloring books, littleBits
Sounds like a great start already. We use a LOT of cardboard donated by Ss and Ps, boxes/toilet paper rolls/etc
In addition to students, I'd love to see other Ts and As getting their hands on it! https://t.co/aus4xNrfPk
Once it is made who do you see using it?
. I'm hoping we focus on is the non-tech aspect as well ,not get caught up thinking we need all techy stuff.
A2: ,wire, cardboard, , tape, glue, markers, minecraft blocks
Some of our Ts get more involved than the Ss, kind of fun to watch
My teachers get to play in it as part of their back to school PD
Agree. runs ours and does a good job of keeping it mixed, always looking for new tech or non-tech Ss love
A2 recycled materials are always great, low budget and can be used in so many creative ways
I'd like to have older tech in that space. Old motherboards, cassette tapes, etc. Take them apart! https://t.co/AB9VRyrIMS
A2 I have yarn, boxes and tubes of all sizes, glitter, trinkets from $ sections and
I really would like to gather a lot of old electronics & toys with circuits from garage sales & let my Ss take apart
Our Tinker table has a lot of these! Ss love, get challenged to figure out how to put back together
I love the cardboard challenge through Caine's Arcade https://t.co/IJYtFChU4N great starter activity to get kids making!
. Thanks for the great resource.
our 5th grade did that with the dysfunctional vcr in their room last year
A2: We started small maker space- makey-makeys, snap circuits, Knex, LittleBits, yarn, straws, an Osmo, and a couple Ozobots.
A2 The beginning of the year is a great time to do the supply drive using school supply boxes for cardboard
take them apart and make something else out of them too!
I also have teachers play in maker space during in-service days. Good library PR!
I love the idea of having old computer parts to take apart.
What is your tinker table? https://t.co/MrPXqaunnO
Our Tinker table has a lot of these! Ss love, get challenged to figure out how to put back together
Ss take old devices: comps/VCRs/cameras/remote controls and "tinker" w/them, take apart, put back together, etc
A3 This past year it was only open before school 7:50-8:30 and after school on Wednesdays for Technology CLub
I have maker-makeys because I won them at differed EdCamps!
A3-I was going to try to integrate into curriculum/standards with some days being totally their own, no strings attached making.
A3 whenever they are working in a project they have the freedom during work time or study hall to use our space to build
A2:recycled materials, craft items, Little Bits, paint, Model Magic, robots,MakeyMakeys, cardboard tools, LEDs/batteries
A3 This upcoming year I am going to have it open for Ss to come and use during the day, before school and after school.
A3: I like that idea before school.
A3: last yr, each class had 45 min time used w/library time each week
Were there also lessons in the library or just maker space time?
A3: I leave it open all day, however many of my Ss used it during our CodeLab period that I had every day
What kind of simple machines would you have in your makerspace?
A3 mine are used anytime during the day as it can fit in with any subject, something can be created and written about, etc
Great ideas and sharing happening in ! Loving so far!
Do Ss use the maker space to complete/work through a project?
. Are there any requirements/parameters or do they make whatever they want? I'm new to this.
Thanks so much for this wonderful chat and thanks for hosting! https://t.co/znsWVcIc03
Thank YOU for hosting tonight & BIG TY to all who shared in it! https://t.co/Mh6COSRznv
Thanks for joining chat as part of !! I hope you got some new ideas and inspiration for the coming year. ;)
Michelle, 1st grade from WI, have a class MS,all Ss use it, also working on a school MS for this year
Get book, listen 2 librarian 4 info or special activity, rest in makerspace, sometimes T directed act, other own
I agree! Getting lots to share as my school begins this adventure. https://t.co/CAo9Ed4AEd
Great ideas and sharing happening in ! Loving so far!
Also had open 2 lunch periods per week for rotating Ss free time https://t.co/cFlbg0W3rE
A3: last yr, each class had 45 min time used w/library time each week
A3: depends, whenever it fits with what we are doing, genius hour, challenges
A3 I am hoping to get a lot more use out of it this year then last year.
Thx I like the idea of teachers playing in the maker space. I'm gonna start & have my Kinder team come and play.
Thanks so much. https://t.co/sHylvAVSqj
At the beginning of the year I got out a different activity each day to showcase/learn...towards the end of year they picked
I have to call it a night unfortunately but I look forward to catching up via the transcripts tomorrow! Great chatting w/ y'all!
A4: Our space is in the library and a small room next to it, need more space in the coming years, but hard find as school grows
pulleys, levers, chutes, bridges, etc
A4 Mine is in the center of the library as well as certain activities being in tubs that rotate between 3 schools.
A4-I believe we'll be using a shared activity space. In my classroom it's more of boxes on shelves that Ss can access
A5 I have one so that all students can tap into their creativity and make something they are passionate about
A5: Want my Ss 2 create something that ties in2 their learning, as well as find something they may have passion 4 thru makerspace
Any good sites/books/task cards for mini design challenges? 1hr or so?
A5 I want my students to explore & use their imaginations.
A5-Gets kids engaged in what we'er learning.Allows my academically struggling Ss to shine.& I love projs. where we build.
Ts pay Ts has several activities that are easily adapted for makerspaces
A5 Ive found it makes learning relevant and meaningful for my Ss. My Ss have become a lot more adaptable, collaborative thru it
Makerspaces are great for acad strugglers, helps see where they can be successful
We use a fairy tale STEM packet from TPT. It's all building to solve problems. https://t.co/9mSCySCpVG
Any good sites/books/task cards for mini design challenges? 1hr or so?
Me, too. Feel overwhelmed with all the options. Want my kick off to be success. https://t.co/jhHXs0atkZ
Once it is made who do you see using it?
A5 Exploration and hands on creativity and development help engage Ss. Could just be helpful ie cell phone repair kit.
4 some it can be a much needed link to help improve their acad. Ss catch on to concepts they may not have otherwise
The hands-on aspect is great for those struggling
A6: The best way to make it work is T buy-in and a wonderful librarian like !
A6-I have no idea.I just will. Learning from you all, reading books, looking at your suggested websites&people to follow.
You will ROCK it!! Just keep trying new things and you will find what works best for you!
A6: Love the Tim Gunn Q! I find it takes Ss suggestions and open project time at the beg of year the into curricular projects
A6 I refuse to let it defeat me...while there are days it feels like chaos I know that is part of the process.
Great attitude and controlled chaos can be fun. :) https://t.co/VQ839QS6RA

A6 After all Makers Gonna Make no matter what :)
Controlled chaos is exactly how I run my class!
A6 I start small + gradually open choices during the year. Ss usually act responsibly with increased freedom bc they're engaged
Is there any other way???
Great chat tonight everyone! I hope you have super successful maker spaces in the coming year!
Such a great session for my very first . Thanks for all you shared. Thanks for leading it.
mistakes will be made 2 and those need to be seen as learning exp. A risk taking culture is good
