A1 I identify most with the engineer. I like to take ideas, things we have already created and tweek/refine them to make them more relevant, “creative” and engaging for the kids. No need to reinvent the wheel, just reshape it. #dubMSela
A1 I don't identify with one particular type. Sometimes I'm a bit of an artist, other times I'm more of a geek, and I'm even a point guard at times (but please don't hand me a basketball). It seems to depend on the situation and my goals. #dubMSela
A1: I identify w/ the Engineer. I find myself thinking about how I can take existing things, add, refine, & mix up to make it better. However, I identify w/ Architect in that I rely heavily on the collaborative work of other creative types 2 create #dubMSela#dubMSela
I know though that if I were on Apollo 13, I would have resembled all of the creative approaches...actually I would have never been there...#scaryspacetravel#dubMSela
I'm not sure that I would define them exactly the same way as they are defined in the book, and I think that we are also probably not easily pigeon-holed. We're most likely mash-ups of pieces and parts of each of those. #dubMSela
A2 I am always in awe of what kids can create without much directive from me. Given an ending point to achieve, there will be those that need to follow my model and those that go in very different directions to create the end product.) #dubMSela
BTW I'm retweeting @sharondechert so that you all can read her answers in response to the Qs. She scheduled her responses, but they showed up earlier this evening. #dubMSela
A2: Our students show their learning in different ways...if we recognize and value their creative mindset, we are allowing them to shine and grow. #dubMSela
A2: Accepting & appreciating different approaches to creativity encourages us to produce “exceptional creative work” rather than working against one another which essentially sabotages our efforts and defeats our purpose of creating for the benefit of the students. #dubMSela
A1 I think I'm an artist. I find so much joy in designing and creating activities that inspire kids. I would like to be more of a blend of all of the others, though! #dubMSela
A2 I was going to say almost exactly this same thing, except in regard to Ts. Is it just me, or does it sometimes feel like Ts don't always collaborate well? #dubMSela
A2: Accepting & appreciating different approaches to creativity encourages us to produce “exceptional creative work” rather than working against one another which essentially sabotages our efforts and defeats our purpose of creating for the benefit of the students. #dubMSela
You are right- A teacher once told me it is about ownership, & the hard work they put into creating these lessons. There are always peers that will do minimal work & want to just use what their peers are doing #dubMSela
Wow. But honestly... is there anything in education that is totally 100% brand new? Even if we "create" lessons, how much are we borrowing, building on, tweaking what has been done before? No teacher is an island IMHO. #dubMSela
A3 In order to be an instructional leader, I think it is important to be willing to take risks, try new things, fail, and try again. If we tell the kids they grow when they fail, we have to have the same mindset. #dubMSela
A3 (cont) As I look at each topic in science and things we have traditionally done to cover the material, I will be evaluating them to see how/if they can be modified to fit the launch cycle. If it might work, I am going to try it. #dubMSela
A3 (3)If I want to reach all levels of students, I have to be willing to provide these types of opportunities whenever I can. Some of the most valuable feedback I get from students is when I ask them what we could have done differently to improve the project.I'm learning #dubMSela
A2 All Ss & Ts bring different creative approaches to the classroom. When working with colleagues or grouping students, its helpful to recognize all of the creativity that can be added through variety. #dubMSela
A3: I use my blog and other writing pieces to create and tinker...I also feel that my lesson plans allow me to create and tinker too. I like to see how things can be done differently in order to meet the needs of my Ss. #dubMSela
A3 I feel that I am constantly tinkering. I always want to improve the experience for the Ss. Love @sharondechert idea about asking Ss what could be done differently. I deeply value time to reflect and time to collaborate.... always elusive in our busy days. #dubMSela
I think I could identify the teachers that I work closely with, but I would give them several different creative labels. Love that many Ts have so many creative talents that vary from me. Variety is the spice of life. #dubMSela
Ah yes...reflection time is a great time to tinker/create. What went well...what can you improve upon...etc. The key is remembering it for next time...he he. #dubMSela
Great idea! If I would make myself blog, that might be a place for me to reflect and get feedback from colleagues. I never feel like I have anything to say that is worth putting out there. #dubMSela
A4 Design thinking is taking an idea, problem, engineering challenge and through questioning and research come up with ideas to solve the problem or create a product and finally building a final product through the use of trial/error and data analysis. #dubMSela
Because I find so much joy in creating, I spend much of my time and energy doing just that! However, my struggle is in giving Ss the same amount of time/opportunities to create. I'm always curious about how other Ts develop creative opportunities for Ss?? #dubMSela
A4: Design Thinking is both a mindset and process/ both a teaching and learning strategy that can be customized and applied to complex problem solving and creative work.#dubMSela
A4: Design thinking is allowing Ts/Ss to explore different ways to solve problems, using the same steps/processes but having different outcomes in the classroom. #dubMSela
A4 As a LA teacher, I really identified with the writing process analogy. I see design thinking as a recursive cycle of problem solving, using creativity and "positive risk taking," ultimately resulting in some kind of public display. #dubMSela
A4: Design Thinking is both a mindset and process/ both a teaching and learning strategy that can be customized and applied to complex problem solving and creative work.#dubMSela
I researched design thinking in education and found a lot of great stuff to extend my understanding of what design thinking means in education #dubMSela
The SS teacher in me loves the empathic approach to design thinking - finding an issue that inspires empathy, researching that issue and the people affected by it, and designing real world solutions that impact change. #dubMSela
A5 (1) The structure of the design cycle gives students a blueprint to follow so they don’t get bogged down in one stage of the process. It also has room for multiple ideas to be explored before a final “product” comes to fruition. #dubMSela
A5(2) This should allow any student to has his/her ideas heard and explored before getting a go ahead from the group or a nixing of the idea. The cycle itself also helps keep kids on track when their wheels get stuck in a rut. Can’t wait to get started. #dubMSela
A5: Like what @sharondechert said, "the structure of the design cycle gives Ss a blueprint". Ss don't have to think about the process...they can just create. #dubMSela
I keep coming back to the idea of "public display," and how Ts can make what Ss create more "public." This book has me thinking a lot about AUDIENCE!! #dubMSela
Exactly. Once they have that blueprint to follow, and they have followed it a few times, they will most likely internalize the processes and free up brainpower. #dubMSela
A5 The concepts of awareness and empathy (as pointed out by @WorldHistagram) are so important... I need to think about that first stage more and how I can help students notice more. #dubMSela
Q6 As we move forward into learning more about the LAUNCH cycle, which phases or stages do you already incorporate in your classroom? Which phases or stages do you think will be the most challenging to incorporate or sustain? #dubMSela
A6 (1) The most difficult stage for me to incorporate is the launch. It is probably one of the most important pieces to the cycle and I have difficulty leaving enough time for the presentations. I will figure it out with the help of my teaching partners. #dubMSela
A6(2) In terms of what I already incorporate, research on topics of interest, opened ended choices of products to demonstrate learning, and data collection. I tend to do all of this with individuals, except data collection, instead of collaborate design groups. #dubMSela
One major shift for me this upcoming year is to spend more time with current events, the relationship those events have with ancient history and the empathy necessary to study both. #dubMSela
A6: In Social Studies we use empathy as a tool to help students better understand historic issues, people and events. Asking questions is also something that kids do well. The most challenging is navigating ideas collaboration and forming a “plan” seems to be tedious. #dubMSela
A6: in writing I feel like we highlight what is working and what is not. I didn’t think I’m allowing enough time for navigating multiple routes #dubmsela
