A1: Been big into room transformations since #bethewildcard was released. Just recently did Settlers of Catan to teach the Medium of Exchange and Flow of Goods. Was a smash hit, planning three more in the weeks ahead. #tlap
A1 This year, started off year with a game of Head Up by Ellen. So many laughs and smiles as we worked on getting comfortable with vocabulary and being silly in front of others. Coming soon: Speak Out. Gotta bring in the laughs.

#tlap@JayBilly2 is pure joy! Love being silly with this guy!
✨☠️Hey, #TLAP! I'm Kimberly, and I teach 7th grade ELA! A pirate hat would definitely be my favorite kind of hat because I ❤️my #TLAP, #XPLAP, #LearnLAP, and well, all the pirate crews! ☠️✨
A1: Opera day. Everyone has to sing answers to questions as if it's an aria. Alternatively sing like Adele day or sing like Beyonce Day. #tlap Keep it silly!
Hi #TLAP ! I’m Emily, & I teach 2nd in TX. My favorite type of hat is one out of my “ask a friend” bin! I have a sombrero, witch hat, top hat, beanie, fuzzy bucket hat, & more students choose for me to wear when I can’t be interrupted in class-it’s a great visual & tons of fun!
A1 as a Principal I don’t know if it qualifies as activities but I visit classrooms in my different hats and take on different accents and personas to build relationships and have fun with students and staff #tlap
Howdy #tlap from Barbara; my favorite hat HAS to be my Keppy Cap from @ayel4kindness in FL, a #kindness crusader of the CharACTer Kind who made this for me even as hurricane Irma was headed her way last year at this time, reminding me #charactercounts even in turbulent times!
A1: I love letting Ss create something out of Play-Doh then use Flipgrid to share what that object means to them. It's a fun way to use tech and play together! Works great for teacher PD, too! #tlap#personalizedPD
A1: To allow fun in the classroom, I incorporate a lot of games both with and without technology, as well as music. I tell the Ss that I want them to have fun and laugh because it makes the class and day better. #tlap
Q1 Silly Hat-
What activities do you implement in your classroom that allow FUN to be a part of learning?
#tlap@JayBilly2 is pure joy! Love being silly with this guy!
We do projects that are uncommon to keep things interesting and creative. Creating wheelchairs from PVC piping, making balloon powered cable cars to name a couple. #tlap
A1: I teach Social Studies, so you HAVE to find the weird/quirky/fascinating in whatever unit you're in. One of my favorite from last year - taught about the REAL pirates of the Carribbean. Kids LOVED it! #tlap
I always read the Wayside Stories from Louis Sachar and kids love the different voices and ways I read (try to do that throughout). But also use @Flipgrid and let them have fun with the stickers and such. Ss also have soft starts in the AM @ legos is one option #TLAP
A1: We grudgeball for review (kids and I love it), we flip desks and throw paper at each other for trench warfare, I seek to find ways to incorporate voice and choice to help students feel empowered and part of the knowledge creation in class. #tlap
A1 Since I'm teaching Pre-K, "silly" is a key part of my classroom. During our "carpet time" on Friday a student was laughing at me and said, "Mrs. Spillman, you're so silly!" I told him THANKS! 😋 #preklikeapirate#tlap
#Tlap A1 Well my random dance moves in the morning and in class. When I teach writing as innovation we play the telephone game and I always make it a long story that’s odd “the Cookie Monster went to DestinyUSA to...”—always a winner. Role play activities throughout the year.
Q1 Silly Hat-
What activities do you implement in your classroom that allow FUN to be a part of learning?
#tlap@JayBilly2 is pure joy! Love being silly with this guy!
Thinking about the beginning of the year, we used to take our grade 6 students to camp which was all about fun and building relationships. I also like doing fun games like "two truths and a lie". I also love special theme days, especially pyjama day! #tlap
Q1 Silly Hat-
What activities do you implement in your classroom that allow FUN to be a part of learning?
#tlap@JayBilly2 is pure joy! Love being silly with this guy!
a1: lots of discussion, chances for students to get up and moving, and game time. Also me drawing in front ofthe kids and them trying to guess if it is a penguin or a car #ImThatGood#tlap
A1: we play games during reading discussions - Pictionary - illustrate greatest conflict from yesterday’s read and the small group guesses and passes. 12 minute challenge. #tlap
A2: My favorite way to be silly with kids is with a puppet on my arm! Here Junior the giraffe was helping boost my cool factor as we waited for the first-day busses to arrive last year. #tlap
A1. We are about 6 weeks into school. For junior high we have been trying coloring pages, Kahoot, and the big challenge of https://t.co/Jf6HIXUn2O. The kids compete for the highest score on each game for a prize at the end of the quarter. #tlap
A1: Gamifying my classroom with a theme for each area I teach makes learning fun and an adventure! I have a MasterChef, Amazing Race, and Food Truck theme layered over my 3 diff curriculum. #tlap
A1: In Media class when students 1st practice recording their voice on their iPad, I have them read the lyrics from "You've got a Friend in Me", from Toy Story. Some kids sing it, others say it, but everyone is smiling. #tlap
I'm looking at bringing fun back into a building. That means laughing every day, greeting people with a smile, and encouraging everyone to take a risk. #tlap
A1: when my Ss get stuck on a concept, we stop and make up a “rap” about it! I have fun being goofy in my class and I think it’s fun for the kids, too! We also enjoy playing @HeadsUp to review content! #tlap
Welcome to #tlap!
Tonight, you are in for a treat as we discuss the Many Hats of Educators!
Please introduce yourself and share your favorite hat! Why?
@burgessdave@dbc_inc
A1: I love incorporating games to review standards!!! Ss have so much FUN participating & showing what they’ve learned!! Engagement is at an all time high! #tlap
A1 I try very hard to assure that choice/voice are a huge piece of the learning. Fun naturally comes when you do that. But also creating a culture that invites fun and that safety to be yourself is huge. After all, Culture eats structure for lunch. #tlap
Q1 Silly Hat-
What activities do you implement in your classroom that allow FUN to be a part of learning?
#tlap@JayBilly2 is pure joy! Love being silly with this guy!
What’s fun for me isn’t always fun for them, but what’s fun for them is almost always fun for me.The goofier, the crazier, the more embarrassing, the better.
“Would you rather” is always an epic game to play no matter the subject matter. It’s like @burgessdave ‘s brackets #tlap
A1: I love to incorporate singing, dancing, humor, personal stories and hands on activities to enhance the learning and make it fun. Last week was dry ice and math games. #tlap
A1 My gamified class keeps the energy on high in my room. My guilds have already created guild names, logos and handshakes! Let the competition begin! #tlap
A1: I make sure there’s something with movement-a game, a dance, a partner activity, a scavenger hunt, or a transition-every 20 minutes in class. My kiddos LOVE moving around, so I incorporate it into every subject every day! #TLAP
A1 Teaching MS you have to walk a fine line with silliness! I find playing 80's music and playing funny song YouTube videos is a perfect blend for us! THe occasional game works too #tlap
A1: I noticed we got a new bike that will generate energy for the grid in our district. I may have to take that for a spin around the school delivering laughs and making people smile and guffaw #tlap
A1: we learn history through outside adventures, build with legos, Oreos, play doh, lots of choice, room transformations, digital breakouts, when we are creating I love playing Music. #tlap
A1
HATS OFF TO YOU!
🤠🥳👲👒🎩⛑️
Our party hats come out on Fridays for Freestyle Friday! The last 10 minutes of class students have the opportunity to share a special talent or interest of theirs with the class! It's just for FUN, but we learn so much about each other! #TLAP
#tlap A1 #FridayNightLights = PEP RALLY THEME DAYS! Frehsmen class was pink out! My outfit exceeded expectations. To generate fun in my room I <3 giving my Ss the opportunity to create and illustrate math problems. Even HS kids LOVE to draw and color!
Q1 Silly Hat-
What activities do you implement in your classroom that allow FUN to be a part of learning?
#tlap@JayBilly2 is pure joy! Love being silly with this guy!
A1: I love to incorporate movements into my lessons. I make up motions on the fly sometimes or little chants during lessons as a way for kiddos to remember the lesson material! #tlap
A1. Marshmallow shooters to see how far they can shoot the marshmallows! We play music, allow them to sing to it. We use pladoh in some projects. #tlap
A1 (cont): I also put content “raps” that we come up with on YouTube - it’s great to shed your shame and have fun! Here are some examples! #tlaphttps://t.co/Ah5BmWXfk7
Not sure it’s a “fun” activity but it is for me 😂 Challenge my Ss by creating learning and bringing them into it. Teach 1984: create 1984 in the classroom #tlap
A1: Not sure it’s a “fun” activity but it is for me 😂 Challenge my Ss by creating learning and bringing them into it. Teach 1984: create 1984 in the classroom #tlap
just jumping in for a few minutes before my early bedtime since one of my favs @TaraMartinEDU is moderating!
A1: I love being silly when I dress or read as a character. Silly voices and pretending to be someone you’re not is always a blast! #tlap
A1: Tabletop games are a great way to incorporate fun and learn something too! Love the collaboration that happens when the board games come out. #tlap
John from Mexico City checking in way late! I love the “sombrero” of the Mariachi! It is a symbol of the beauty, flare and richness of Mexican culture #tlap
A1 we do a bunch of physics problems, and I always draw myself as a stick figure wearing a top hat.. Ss get to draw themselves as stick figures and get to do whatever silly hat/hair they want.. makes drawing a pic both a good and FUN strategy #tlap
A2: Creating projects where students can ask others besides me. Learn from all rather than 1. Try to make projects meaningful and helpful to community. Creating solutions for community needs. #tlap
A1 I love to learn with the Ss they always think it’s crazy when we do something I have never done before but they always have more fun with it knowing we are doing it together! #tlap
A2: I did @Sphero soccer races outside with my old #STEAM class. Got them outside, we did goals, set races and so forth. It was good times. I'm planning on some footage walks with our multimedia this semester. #TLAP
A2: Hoping to use side quests this way once I kick off #gamification (???) but since my homework is optional, Ss can do anything that drives them (we use Flipgrid here too so others can see what they are working on). #TLAP
A2: Awesome safari hat! I love to provide PD for Ts at local coffee shops and restaurants as well as online #personalizedPD! It's also such fun to empower Ss to do complete service learning projects for others in the community! #tlap
A2 this is the bulk of my teaching opportunities now days so I try to do it by having conversations with kids and sharing our passions and answering their questions. #tlap
A2 It is important to create experiences outside of school. From job interviews with real business and real jobs on the line, to lessons with community groups & spreading kindness in the community. It is important to tie in learning to all we do, every day. #tlap
2) #tlap Kids love field trips but that doesn’t mean you have to charter a bus. Sometimes just getting students outside into a field, into the real world, and teaching the same content in the same way, in a new space can bring it to life.
#tlap PE teacher in AZ
A1 to allow fun in my class I am using gamification for most of our #PhysEd activities and kids are allowed to challenge each other/other squads in a showdown
A2: I use @Flipgrid and @Skype to help breakdown our classroom walls! Last year we had a flipgrid pen pal in a different state! We also used @Flipgrid to collaborate on a project with a classroom in another school in our district. We’ve used @Skype to talk with authors! #tlap
A1b: I can’t help but bring my love of games into our #kindergarten classroom! Headbanz, Twister, Pictionary and all kinds of games at our morning meeting! #tlap
A2: ooooo!! We participate in as many global collabs as possible in my classes - which is still inside our classroom. However, the conversations & relationships that my students develop w/their peers around the world continues after the collab ends, & it’s awesome to see! #tlap
A2 we have taken field trips for cultural shows, but also taking students to present to educators at #edtech conferences and share their learning, #tlap
A2: This is a tough one for me - I'm a cyber teacher - so our walls are a little different. Last year for our study of india, I offered the kids the chance to eat or cook an Indian meal for a more tactile choice. Those who chose it loved it! #tlap
A2: YouTube! FaceTime people visiting or living in other places! Pictures! Books! We go on one field trip each year as a grade & don’t really have a lot of areas within walking distances for students to experience so I use technology to bridge the gap & connect to learning! #TLAP
A2: When I was in the classroom, I used to love organizing and running the Grade 4 Bazaar with my students. They did things like announcements, created posters, made tickets, organized and ran stations. There were so many great skills in there but it was beyond our 4 walls. #tlap
A2: Authentic problem solving either within our school as a whole (like our cafeteria/recycling) or the community. Use the MISO method from @cbkaye to find out more about the issue and then prepare to take action! #tlap
#tlap A2. We are reading informational text about genetically modified carrots and salmon. I brought different colored carrots in to show and tomorrow I am bringing in products that are Non GMO so they realize it is a part of thier world.
A2: In the classroom, we'd frequently take our reading time outside. Our Science curriculum begged us to go outside when we discussed clouds and weather. Now I love taking my Ts & Ss to Twitter and showing them their impact. #tlap
A2: This year I plan to have my students explore the history of our town through museum visits and spending some time interviewing seniors at the Retirement home. #TLAP
A1: GameBasedLearning: U can turn anything into a game. My favorite memories include seniors playing London Bridges to the song, “Oranges and Lemons” &ending in a tug of war/Philosophical Chair, Speed Dating/Heads Up war, Hagoo as a class builder, & Blogs w/Ss in Minnesota. #tlap
A2 Get out of that comfort zone. Learn about what Ss do on the weekend, watch them in their activities, cheer on what their interested in, & personalize your learning outside of the four walls too. #tlap
A2: I host an open-mic like event called Java Jam for our Ss... They can perform music, sing, read poetry, an original story, dance, juggle, etc... good for building presentation skills... #tlap
A2 last year with #pbl we connected through @edmodo@Flipgrid@padlet and skype, built new peer collaborations, could see and learn about other classrooms #tlap
A1 #tlap
For random grouping, I have pairs of popsicle sticks that have to be put together to form a picture or word. I hand them out and tell kids to find their match. 6th graders love it!
A2: Having students read and respond to contemporary articles & news stories that are relevant and topical. Then we write and argue about those things. The idea is to inspire critical thinkers who do this sort of thing long after they leave school, shaping civil society. #tlap
A2: To take learning outside of the classroom, I established a partnership with the @lyceebazin in France to give my Ss authentic experiences with French Ss. The Ss are communicating with each other all the time in the target language. Learning French doesn’t stop in class #tlap
A2: We don't have funds for transportation, so I wrote a grant to provide bussing to the pumpkin patch, our local theater to see a live production geared to children, and the sensory walk at our local nature center. #tlap
A2: is like to get better at this. We went to the “liberty tree” and had a lesson, went on a Crusade, and did a Trail of Tears walk. I’d like to find more ways to incorporate Skype and have students come up with questions for experts #tlap
A2: My community has history with civil rights, so when we learn about the Civil Rights movement, I bring up some places in the community they can go explore to learn more. #tlap
A2 As a principal I think this is an important role in getting out in the community & getting the community in. Last week’s Back to School Bash is an example where businesses donated hot dogs, chips, juice, drumlines from 2 high schools came & we had open house/block party #tlap
Take advantage of local offerings! For example we had a carnival close by with a roller coaster....so we set up a mtg with the engineer to discuss force and motion with our students! We had students who got to ride the coaster for the first time ever!
#tlap
A2: I do things like have the students 'ask experts' for help when they are working on projects. I also try to connect with other classes online so they can see what life is like outside of our community. I'd like to expand these things further this year. #tlap
A2... can we just take a moment for that @burgessdave hat picture, hahahaha.... please tell me there are more where that came from!!! Ok - continue with the #tlap party.
A2: this year I am planning on doing more projects that reach outside our walls and encourage global thinking and empathy. @h2oschools is one way I plan to start!! #tlap
So fun!! I would love to know how you set it all up! Do you have individual boggle sets, like the real game, or a boggle board displayed in your room? #tlap
A2 We do messy math each month and have an paper airplane contest we take outside! At the end of this year I am planning on doing an amazing race challenge to review all the math we have learned. And when spring fever hits we do math with chalk instead of in the classroom! #tlap
Q3 Nurse Hat-
Sometimes our learners need more than a band-aid to patch their brokenness.
What picture books or mindfulness activities do you implement to address the SEL needs in your classroom?
#tlap
Love me some @burgess_shelley as the Pirate Nurse. She's so very caring.
A2 I use the hallway floors to help the littles think about math words, like "corner", "point", "sides", etc. And we look for patterns, letters, etc., incorporate science talk as we travel to and from the playground; soc/emot teaching-holding doors, etc. #tlap#preklikapirate
A2: My Ss go on scavenger hunts around campus & incorporate our math & science standards. We use @Seesaw for them to document their findings! It’s a great way for them to take control of their learning & share what they know! #tlap
#tlap A2: in addition to my First Friday Family Fitness events, I’m going to be implementing a weekend challenge for Ss to post pics of them and fams being physically active
We had some local barbers come in and give haircuts. One couldn't make it so he gave us cards to give the kids for free haircuts. We often forget how much our local community has to offer. #tlap
When I want my first graders to work with a partner we dance around the room and when the music stops they have to find the closest person to work with. Sometimes I will start a lesson with a silly accent and they find that so funny too #tlap
A2: This year I am inviting parents and community members to be Guest Readers. I also participate in the #Gridpals program and Mystery Skype. #tlap@Flipgrid
A2
✨🍽🍩🎭✨🍽🍩🎭✨
Dinner, Donuts, & a Drama!
We offered a free after-school opportunity for students to see an outstanding performance of Seedfolks (a book we read) at the Johnny Carson Theatre, & had we may have had a little fun too! 💕Check out JC's hat! Sweet! #TLAP
A2 #tlap exploring the school grounds by measuring the slope of the hillside thus bringing Math to life- and the stream behind the school gives opportunities to use Vernier instruments to test the water and give students a real world experience.
A2b: We also built this Peace Garden to allow our Ss and stakeholders to go outside to practice #mindfulness; it's a beautiful serenity spot that uplifts b/c of our positive messages on the #kindness rocks on the periphery. #tlap
A2: I have a separate Google Classroom called “The Collaboration Station” Where Ss can post work, ideas, projects for peer-review & to crowdsource ideas... #tlap
A3: Sometimes something just as simple as rose/thorn = best/worst check ins from the past week. So key with MS Ss. Doing this in creative ways helps validate Ss feelings and allows them to stay connected. #tlap
A2: we have an outdoor science field trip in the spring at the beach. It's awesome. I'm a big fan of taking the kids outside if possible too. I also like bringing in "outside" podcasts, Skype in the classroom - exposing my Ss to everything I can #TLAP
A3: At the beginning of each day, we start with the Sunshine Circle. It's a SEL curriculum that is paced out for six weeks, but then Ts can mix and match the activities for the remainder of the year. #tlap
A3: Sweet Shelley! Love the nurse hat! I love Be Kind, Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Day, Those Shoes, and even The Giving Tree. So many great books to develop empathy and compassion! #tlap#passionforkindness
#tlap A3. We read 3 articles about Grit, learning how to overcome when we fail, and how to hang out with the right crowd to overcome peer pressure. I tried to set the example of our choices determine our paths in life.
A3 I love to use picture books to bring in important lessons. Started my year off with Where Oliver Fits by @2dCale A great lesson in loving yourself, being proud and accepting others. My HS students were not used to picture books, glad to bring them back.
#tlap
A3: As a school, we have implemented Woosah Wednesdays this year under the direction of our awesome counselor. The Woosah Wednesday is 5-10 minutes after morning announcements when we do some mindfulness activities. We are ALL loving it! #tlap
A3 my students love https://t.co/AYwxegAXih and it's free for educators (woohoo!) I love that there are guided mediations for different age groups so it fits what my Ss relate to #tlap
A2: Our #globalcollaboration journey allowed my Ss to connect & learn with Ss, educators, & authors in all 50 states & 3 countries!! It was the most amazing learning experience! #tlap
A3: I have classroom meeting a few times a week where we do a group activity that involves everyone, practice mindfulness exercises and talk about growth mindset. We also teach zones of regulation to help give Ss tools for their feelings. #tlap
A3: I use a “Take What You Need” bulletin board in my high school classroom. This is filled with words of inspiration and motivation, and I encourage my students to take “what they need” from the board to remind them that they can do it! #tlap
Thanks Dave! I'm so pumped for the week! Tomorrow they find out which guilds get a power and which get a curse!
Then on Wednesday @rebevelous29 reand I team up for the grand opening of our "Tasty Texts" book tasting! #tlap#xplap
A3 in our building each week each grade level has a lesson during our intervention time that focuses on this very topic, we also have a building acronym that guides our Ss and Ts in what they do and we use it to process with kids #tlap
Q3 We conduct circle up each morning as a way to start the day! Perhaps starting with a prompt or question, or just allowing students to share how their morning was going. This practice helps students connect with each other to show that they are REAL! #tlap
I absolutely LOVE how you are using picture books with your high school students, Roman! So excited to follow your journey this year! You are so inspiring! #tlap#bekindedu
A3: I try to inspire agency in students and remind them that their thoughts, and actions matter. But also that it's OK to make mistakes, that no one is perfect, and that life can be a messy place where struggle is natural. #tlap
A3 Leader in Me is a big piece of the culture at my school and there’s a lot of focus on instilling the 7 habits which lends to this. Intention w/ brain friendly teaching (ex. Kagan) is huge too. Intentional Read alouds w/ focuses are helpful too like Stick & Stone #tlap
A3: We take part in @the_kind_club monthly #kindness challenges with other clubs from all over North America. This helps us to develop a sense of empathy, compassion and courage while working with other communities taking part in the monthly #tkckindnesschallenge#tlap
A3 I’ve done a little of this in the past but this year I am devoting classtime each class to some form of mindfulness activity—breathing exercises, visualization...even looking into some yoga poses to try #tlap
I have both. I created a Google slides and made a chart and put in the letters for them and display it on the white board. I also purchased 6 actual games. Sometimes I control the game and other times I allow them to form a group and make it work! #tlap
A3: Stressing honesty and advocacy from the beginning. The first day of school, I co-taught with the guidance counselor and we talked about how self-advocating can go WAY beyond grades! #tlap
A2: Use remind for Ss and clubs; have Ss connect to community. Make them think outside of class - told Ss that Time didn’t really exist except within our own subconscious.... Ss continued to think after bell #tlap
A3: I still love the book Chrysanthemum for SEL! Also - how about some #DolphinsinTrees! Can't wait to read that with my Middle School Ss next week! #tlap
a3: coming from a background of outward bound, my students are well versed in the idea of physical and emotional safety. mixed groups, accountable talk all part of the routines! #tlap
#tlap A3 My classroom is wrapped with my inspirational phrases that are put on top of pictures I have taken. The kids LOVE them. At times, the words might be a band aid to an emotional injury.
A3 I don't use books so much for this purpose; I'm more likely to discuss movies that are relevant to social well being of Middle School Students.#tlap
A2: Digital Learning = Bring others in if u cannot go out; Sidewalk chalk; Journal/Writing inspired by a walk; Community Partnership; Charity Projects; Blogging; Google Site Breakout; Edmodo collaborations across States; Turn novel discussions. Into a Baseball/Football Game #tlap
A3 I have learned about "Conscious Discipline" recently and have incorporated the concepts from that in my class. Seems to be helping the kiddos build bonds as a community, which is tricky with 4 year olds! #tlap#preklikeapirate
A2: I bring in a lot of what I do outside of class like hobbies and interests of my own that I am passionate about! I also have students share out and award extra xp points if they teach me something academic or real world based.
#tlap
A3: Second half of my senior English class is lot of reflecting, considering time, experience... books like Tuesdays with Morrie, The Last Lecture, the Little Prince, time capsule of their experiences, then I return letters they wrote themselves on first day of sr. Year... #tlap

#tlap
Love me some @burgess_shelley as the Pirate Nurse. She's so very caring.
A3) We have instituted a ‘door greeter for each PE class this year. A different student each day will greet their classmates as they enter the gym with a hello, high-5, knucks or handshake and a “good morning” or “have a good day!” #tlap

In what ways do you involve your Ss in the management of the classroom or school system?
#tlap@BethHouf is the cutest firefighter EVER! Just sayin...
Chrysanthemum is one of my favorites! I used to read it every first day of school when I was in the classroom and it’s one of favorites to visit classrooms and read now. #tlap
A3: I started the year by reading The Dot, and I changed the bulletin board to a Random Acts of Kindness board - I’m going to have the Ss create some acts of kindness to put in the envelopes. #tlap
A3 I love using @juliacookonline for mentor texts when teaching social skills. My school uses conscious discipline breathing and it’s nice to use at any age too. #tlap
A3: I am a firm believer in teaching your students the word integrity and then being a role model; Smile everyday and incorporate brain breaks and opportunity for laughter; Cooperative Learning implemented properly teaches social skills. #tlap
A3: I love how social/emotional kids books is a booming market right now, there’s so many to choose from! Here’s some of the ones I use, along with leaving time for conversation, reflection, and “how to” make AND keep a friend discussions every day... #TLAP
A3: I don't know that I have much for this one, but I do spend a lot of time with my Ss inside the classroom and at school related extracurricular activities. We have a care center specializing in social/emotional help so I tend to rely on that aid.
#tlap
A3: @NowakRo introduced my Ss to so many great books this part year as part of our #globalcollaboration journey! Loved when he surprised my class in FL & read “Where Oliver Fits”. #tlap
A3: Sometimes it starts with making sure their basic needs are met. We have a 15 minute startup every morning to check in with students, make sure they are set up for success for the day, and end it with some hype music. We also offer 2nd chance breakfast every morning. #tlap
A4: I spend about the first six weeks building a classroom community & teaching routines and procedures. By this time Ss experience ownership and hold each other accountable. #tlap
A4: My Ss create their own rules (norms) for Game Club. With 40+ Ss staying after school on Friday afternoon with a dozen or so tabletop games out (& the Ss competitive nature), their norms & consequences prevent me from ever needing to put fires. #tlap
A3: at the beginning of the year, we read a lot of books promoting empathy: Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch, You Are Special, Mr. Peabody’s Apples. Then for the rest of the year, we have a time where we talk about kindness each day #tlap

#tlap A2 One of our best #globaled experiences was with @galilevari class in Tel Aviv, Israel 🇮🇱. Our students said the Pledge, her students sang their national anthem.
A4 We are really trying to shift towards restorative practices. One example of how we are going to work to involve S’s in that management piece are respect agreements and circles/morning meetings #tlap

A4: I am a firm believer in the power of a conversation. We don't always know what happened right before the fire started, so finding a way to calm the flames, then backtracking to the spark seems to work wonders when trying to save the forest! #tlap

A4: I am not in the classroom anymore but as a Resource Teacher I have a bit more flexibility in my schedule so I often work with students who want to plan and lead our school assemblies and special activities. Allows student voice and leadership. #tlap
A4: I establish a strong relational classroom. Ss help police each other and offer kind and merit worthy criticisms geared toward improvement. I foster an environment of reciprocity. #tlap
A4 I work on knowing my students and involving them in every process and procedure. If they are involved and have a voice and choice, they will be more likely to show acceptance and take risks. You need to have that relationship with them and show them you care. #tlap

A4: Students contribute to the classroom management by following our number one rule, which is to treat their classmates with respect and dignity at all times. I try to take care of everything else! #tlap
A3:- continued I ask Ss to bring in pcis of their family/friends/pets. I hang them all on one wall together. At any time they can go and take a second to remind them of home to refocus. I know my pic of my son sometimes is just what I need to have clarity. #tlap
A4 Well first Relationships and environment—creating that vibration. Then I have what I call the “Always Awesome”(Be honest, give your best effort, respect the learning environment, & be positive) and have kids define what they look like/how to police it...creates ownership #tlap

@TaraMartinEDU#tlap A4 - My district is a pioneer when it comes to student voice. Asking, listening, and responding to the feedback of students is critical for a successful classroom. Kids are honest and know what they need as learners if we are brave enough to ask!
A4: I have students create the must-haves in our classroom at the beginning of the year. They also help to develop our class mission statement. We had a student competition to develop our school pledge. #tlap
A4: I go over expectations. We practice procedures and expectations. We discuss them. I've found that many of the "fires" are often times doused out by classmates regulating each other. #tlap
A4b: Have also used "peer mediators" as a leadership role in the past when Ss felt they could help others through minor friend issues, etc. so that they didn't grow into larger issues #tlap
A4. If a Ss needs help, I empower another S to take the lead and help the S out! Ss have opportunity to lead discussion on topics, share ideas about projects they might be interested in doing in STEM. #tlap

Q1 Silly Hat-
What activities do you implement in your classroom that allow FUN to be a part of learning?
#tlap@JayBilly2 is pure joy! Love being silly with this guy!
Yes! This reminds me of when we do "expert" lists when doing a project of some kind involving technology. They sign up for areas they feel comfortable supporting others and then we post it. When students are having a problem, they can find an expert in the class to ask. #tlap
Thanks... I've been doing it for several years now with my 3rd graders and I am amazed every year by how they "get" it... the smiley faces, rainbows and pleasant colors that go into almost every poster is amazing. Really helps set a tone most years #TLAP
A4 👮♀️my students become the sheriff of whatever they are good at i.e. Tech, communication, organization, math, reading, dance etc from then on the whole class relies on that person. Gives them ownership/builds community #tlap
A4: My Ss are great at reminding each other of the rules-whether I ask them to or not 😂-& we earn letters to get dance parties throughout the day, so I ask them which kiddos they see who are doing great & what classes need to earn a letter! Ss modeling for Ss is the best!! #TLAP
A4: I continually remind my Ss that it is OUR classroom!! I empower them to take the lead & have ownership in the daily runnings of our space.

A4: Now that my kids are comfortable with our routines and procedures, they will be given opportunities to “be the teacher”. I try to give my kids voice and choice in my classroom. #tlap
A4 We make a social contract that they create. We have many convos on what jobs we should have, how we should walk In the hall.. what we should do if there is a problem. It is the same I would have taught but it came from them so it is personal and they WANT to follow it. #tlap

A4: Relationships are the key! If u know your Ss & their individual needs, it will be less likely you will have to put out fires. Consistent expectations are important. Students always knew I would not allow inappropriate language/harm of others; Ss created the class rules. #tlap
A4 - I took an idea from @JoyKirr and use a Positive Peer Feedback jar in my room where Ss can recognize one another for showing leading with dignity.. it's great at preventing fires before they pop up #tlap
A4: our school also has a 5th grade student council! Students have to apply and then participate in community service projects and help organize them for our school. #tlap

A5: Not a lesson - but I give students more time to read and write in class. They appreciate this so much because they are busy, and I can think of nothing more valuable to spend class time on. This way I can conference with them while they actually do the work. #tlap
A5: We were doing book talks when one of my students said another's was as good as a movie trailer. Sooo, we made book trailer videos and shared them. It was so much fun! #tlap
A5: One lesson that worked really well was when I did an #appsmash of @Flipgrid@Screencastify and Google My Maps to allow my Ss to create hometown tours for our partner school. Each Ss had the chance to share places that were unique and made them feel proud to share. #tlap
A5: I LOVE our Ss' Kindness Passion Projects! They used $10 to put good in this world & designed their own acts of kindness aligned to their passions! Take a peek: https://t.co/KZB8a7T54F (click on "Passion Projects" tab to see all 40 projects from this year!) #tlap

A5: We can't do this activity anymore because of health and safety but a few years ago a highlight was when my grade 5/6 class and I created a decades lunch based on the decades we had been studying. We shared our projects, ate delicious food, and built community. So fun! #tlap
A5: I somehow organically end up with random after school clubs. One year I had students stay after b/c they wanted to record Youtube videos. Last year I hosted a D&D club. By hosted I mean kids started hanging out in my room and I told them they could stay. #tlap
A2: I love that our #discosmhs Ss at #smedfordhs embrace outdoors by going on quarterly adventures as well as camping trips with the leadership kiddos! Here are pics from our “Survivor” trip! #tlap#MLmagical

A5: reading aloud strictly for pleasure. My Ss love when I read to them and we discuss our theories. It's not specific to my curriculum but I make it a special part of our day because as far as I am concerned nothing beats the love of reading and enjoying a good book 📚📚 #tlap
A5: My Ss last year were very competitive & loved sports! I designed a Super Bowl themed math review lesson & incorporated @nearpod!! They LOVED it!!! Such a fun lesson that spiced things up as we reviewed key math standards! #tlap
A5: One of my recent favs was when I visited one of the T I mentored Spanish classes. Talking with Ss after their presentations. They said they didn’t know how 2 engage the audience. Created a tool for Ss inspired by #tlap. Visited 2 days later and the presentations blew me away.
Thanks Tamara for the good words. I normally give them choice. Writing every day as formative assessment is so important. Voluminous writing and reading and creating the opportunity for students to do both is what I will always fight tooth and nail for. #tlap

A5 early on as a history teacher I allowed students to have Fol Song Fridays where they created songs and did parodies to show what they had learned during the week rather that having a formal assessment #tlap
A5: Ss had to create an organization (that did not exist) to help with something in their communities/world. They came up with ways to help Street Children in India, dance for expression, to empower young girls & teach them English and so many other things! #tlap
Or, for older students, use https://t.co/lycBYs4ygP so they can email themselves. You could set a specific date so everyone gets it at the same time. #edchat#mschat#tlap

A6: I set up a choice board (Show What You Know Bingo) of options for students to create to demonstrate learning. I also frequently ask for feedback about their learning process and ask what I can do to help! #tlap
A6 This largely goes back to making efforts to be intentional and using restorative practices that focus on voice/choice and the relationship. It’s amazing the power a chat has when there’s a relationship connected to it #tlap

A6: I frequently ask them for feedback. I alter instruction if I see boredom, or if I'm bored. If I'm bored teaching it, they're bored (and likely not learning it). This year will be more student choice & voice than ever before thanks to #DBC50Summer#tlap
A5: Our #Kindergarten kids were super determined to throw a bridal shower for our EA and our school counsellor. We reached out to a local party planning company who helped the kids throw a planning session and then made their party dreams come TRUE! They planned it all! #tlap
A6: Let students write what they want, using the Writer's Notebook idea from @WritingFix with lots of Sacred Writing Time. As long as they're passionate about what they're doing, they feel empowered. #tlap

A6: I sit students in groups, so they can collaborate. After we are done with notes, they can sit on the floor or anywhere in the class they want to do the activity I have given them. If it helps them learn, I'm about it. #tlap
A6: We used Google Forms to create a "What I Wish My Teacher Knew" open-response question, then Ss wrote https://t.co/Ih5laBO9QI link in their planners and share their voice ANY time they needed! We set Google Sheets to email us when form was completed. #tlap

A6: I use a lot of menu boards so Ss can choose which ways to show me their learning. I also ask them for feedback regularly and adjust my teaching as needed. Ss knowing I want them to succeed and will do whatever it takes to help them. Ts just need to listen to the Ss. #tlap
A6: I always solicit feedback from my students with discussion, Google Forms or even email. I have a wonder wall in my room to be sure students ask what they want to know and have time to find out! I also give them choice in their reading and writing. #tlap
A6: Goal setting & reflection. In both rdg and wrtg workshop, Ss will sett the goals they need/want to work on from our progressions. On Fridays, I am carving out time for them to reflect on their private (me, Ps and they are only one w access) Flipgrids abt their work #tlap
A6: Ss can stay after for help during office hours, email or post on Google Classroom, text, can request extensions on major projects via a form, we have “town meetings... #tlap
A6: relationships. Having a good relationship is so important. My Ss know they can talk with me, ask me 4 choice. I am open to their ideas. Sometimes they have better ideas than mine. If they can make it work I'm all in with them. It's not my way or the highway ever. #tlap
A6: I have a Teacher Communication Journal & an inbox/outbox Ss can choose to use, a question pocket on my board so kiddos can submit anytime & I chat w/ them every week when I’m about to make plans for activities they’ve liked or what to add! #TLAP
A6: I shove as much of the cognitive load onto the students as possible. It's not the Mr. Evans show. They need to be arguing, writing, making their own points, way more than I do. Of course, I will go first and model if they need it! #tlap
A6: It’s important to empower your Ss to take control of their own learning by promoting voice & choice!! Whenever possible, I like providing my Ss with opportunities to choose how they want to demonstrate their learning! #tlap
A6 simply put you need to ask them in the beginning you may even need a script for them for reflection eventually if you give them the time and a process students will feel more confidence and comfort in sharing their needs. The key is we have to LISTEN #tlap
#tlap A5 Also have been fortunate to have speakers visit live and engage with our students. Brad Long, Buddy from the movie Hoosiers, Philo Barnhart, creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20.
A6: I love the team structure of culinary! Ss build tight bonds that propel into amazing learning adventures! Ss are not only immersed, but empowered & learning becomes MAGICAL in so many ways!
Word on the street is there's a book coming out about this soon! #tlap#MLmagical
100% agreed. We could worksheet them to death or we can have a nice chat about what they are reading, while they are reading, in class. I know which one I would prefer! #tlap

A6 Paying attention to what they like makes it easier for me to incorporate their interests in the classroom. If a student asks for something, and It's doable, then it's probably gonna happen! #preklikeapirate#tlap
#tlap A6: my squads earn points daily in class. Each new class if a group has the most points, they get to choose to do same warm up as whole class or choose one for themselves. When we have a surprise ‘Squad Free Choice Day’, team w/highest points also chooses activity.

In what ways do you set up the structure of your classroom or system that provide students to have a voice in (and advocate for) their learning?

A6) I feel we do this daily with everything we do! We go to bat for our students and we constantly have to prove or defend our worth and our profession as teachers. We are constantly 'swinging and missing' with some people, but 1 for 3 will get us in the Hall of Fame! #tlap
I did something similar at the start of school with my Ss, Tamara. Made a Google Form and had them answer the prompt I wish my teacher knew... . I should have them revisit this as needed. Thanks 💗 #tlap
A6: from a student: “this was the class in which I felt the most valued and listened to.” They know I care and that makes them also care about what they do in the classroom and who they are as individuals.#tlap
A6: Giving opportunities for student choice is important. I also like conferencing with students where you can have good dialogue and help them voice their goals, thoughts, and needs. Lets me know how I can best support them as well while building good relationships. #tlap
A6. I ask Ss for feedback about things we do. Suggestions for things that they would like to try! If I'm bored with something, then they are bored with it! I look for different , unique things to bring to the table that will strike up their curiosity! #tlap

A7 Love teaching lessons around a meal. We will either cook food together or organize a pot luck. Having learning around food, solidifies the family bond; reminds students of a home atmosphere. We have so many more deep conversations & share our learning. #tlap

I find that having students write less helps too. I focus on sentences a lot because I can give easier, faster feedback. So before I LET you write a paragraph, show me your topic sentence and let me sign off on that. #tlap#iledchat

A6 I’ve worked on this the last few years—developed a social studies workshop that allowed student choice & regular conference time...needs tweaking. I’m having my Ss write reflection letters every week where they can communicate as “reports” in our game #tlap

Haha! So fun! I love using string to connect students then have them figure out how to unravel it without letting go - lots of teamwork, communication, and satisfaction when they make it unravel all the way! #tlap
A7 - we do a 6 piece lego build where Ss are in teams of 2 and one as to describe hi/her creation to see if it can be rebuilt by the other teammate... it's super fun, incredibly hard, and the Ss have great discussion about communication #tlap
A7: Going to camp with all my students where we get to do a bunch of activities like rock climbing, zip lining, high ropes, survival games, and enjoy meals together is one of my favourite ways to build a team. We encourage and support each other throughout each experience. #tlap
A7: Gonna go back to grudgeball for this one. Super competitive game, but it can bring the teams really close together. Sometimes they'll talk about it on the walk down to lunch (split block), and they frequently come back the next year and talk about their teams. #tlap
A6: The project I feel most passionate about in my classroom is the use of #dnainventories Using this critical information about my students’ dreams, needs and abilities helps me make decisions about almost everything that happens in our room and lets their voices be heard! #tlap

A7 My favorite classroom teambuilder is "electric fence". Students all start on one side of a string stretched across the room. They must work together to get all team members over the string to the other side. #tlap
A7: Love improv games like zip-zap-zop or whoosh where Ss really have to listen to each other and attend. Group scavenger hunts around campus are always fun too! #tlap
A6: Choice boards, HyperDocs, Digital Breakouts via Google Sites; Layered Curriculum; Choice in products; Choice in process; Challenges with choices; Choose your own adventure #tlap
A6 I set up many structures so that Ss are safe and supported. My students come into play when in crisis or when there’s a problem. Keeping demands consistent and safety as a priority is huge. #tlap
Oh goodness, Tamara!!! Love it!!! Football + Kindness! That would be the sweetest game ever! Plus it gives me an excuse to share my boyfriend with #tlap, hahaha! Luke doesn’t know though, so shhhhh!

A7: Give me your hand(le) is a fun icebreaker that you can use to break down social conditioning, practice handshakes & eye contact, and lighten up the room with levity!
Use it to practice names or exchange your #oneword.
#tlap
A7. My favorite team builder was using a ring with a string attached to it for each Ss. The ring fit aroung the cups. The Ss had to build a pyramid working together while holding their strings! #tlap
#tlap A7: my school is a @KaganOnline school. We use cooperative learning all day every day. Team builders and class builders. Too many to choose from! If interested, check out Kagan!

A7: In the classroom, we did an activity where Ss put a piece of paper on their desk and everyone went to each paper and wrote something kind. It was incredible to see their faces when they went back & read the kind things their peers said! #tlap
A7: I am crazy about starting our #Kindergarten days together with a #morningmeeting The greetings and activities help us to connect and start the day with enthusiasm and gratitude. #tlap
A7 Well I am full on gamifying this year but I always have done a competition between classes where they name their class (incorporating this into my game cause I love it) some favs from the past include the Crispy bacon, Screaming Llamas, & Anderson’s Army—builds belonging #tlap

A7: On Monday & Friday morning, our class does “Share Ball”-I got a ball from Dollar Tree & kiddos toss it to each other to share or ask questions-it’s worked for the last 3 yrs to keep everyone listening to & interested in each other! The best part, everyone gets a turn! #TLAP
A6: Ss choose own summative assessments - formatives are Ss choice. No points are awarded but graded for those that turn it in. Ss know their own learning ability #tlap
A7: Love utilizing @KaganOnline to help with team building & incorporating lots of challenges! I also teach my Ss lots of class cheers & chats that we use to celebrate & support each other! #tlap
Love this! We did this on paper plates when I was a high school SODA student working with Gr4 Ss. I still have the paper plate my class made for me! So meaningful! #tlap
A7 Fave class teambuilder is singing a song that says "______ is a friend of mine in my Pre-k class". Another is drawing a heart to add names of those who are absent and wish them well . I also thank them for cleaning up OUR class after center time. #preklikeapirate#tlap

Any of my #tlap friends have an idea before school activities for a large group of 6th graders that hang in library until class starts? One of our Media Techs are looking for some ideas.

A7b: Another teambuilding activity to stress that #character IS the plate is for Ss and/or staff to write their #oneword for the school year on a paper plate, then display them by spelling out a word for your school. Here's how it turned out at Friendswood Jr. High! #tlap
Wishing the amazing #TLAP crew an awesome week with students and staff. Thanks for an amazing chat.
Thank you @TaraMartinEDU for leading a great conversation tonight. Getting all my hats ready for this week.
A7: There isn’t enough room for all my favs. 🤪🤔 I LOVE @KaganOnline. I love to structure smash. My recent favorite = Heads Up game + Speed Dating + Pairs Pair = Laughter/Fun Galore #tlap
A7: each day for the first week the Ss come in and have to work together to sit a certain way- ex: day one was by birthday month, day two was alphabetical by first name. It was a fun way for them to meet each other and communicate for an end goal #tlap
